Any album that has songs as good as "Promises", "I'll Make Love To You Anytime", "Roll It", and "Tulsa Time" deserves to be a part of everyone's record collection.
I’ll need to look out my copy and have another listen 👍 Your mention of the guys on the Nothing is Real podcast sums up the very reason I have little time for them . Pretty full of themselves imo .
Great review. I bought this on the day I saw EC in concert for first time and was a bit disappointed but it has grown on me over the years. When I saw him in concert both Marcy and George Terry had left the band. I was interested in the comments on the Beatles podcast criticising Eric for his role in George’s Japan tour! I think he did a great job making that happen! I also understand there was a discussion about George headlining Glastonbury but he ( being reserved ) let someone else speak to Michael Eavis ! Who rather unbelievably rejected the approach and turned him down. He later regretted that !
The first profile I created on my guitar's new multi-effect pedal I named "Backless," because Clapton's sound on this album is like Electric Guitar 101 for me. Since buying the album when it was new (no cut-out corner :) ) I've tried to emulate the sound he had on "If I Don't Be There By Morning," "Tell Me That You Love Me," and the others. Dry and gritty, clear enough to sound like a voice, metal enough to bite when you push a little. It's a good sound for any song. Our band played "Promises." BTW, our vinyl versions are 2 minutes-plus shorter because "Early in the Morning" was edited.
I always enjoyed this album as well. And I purchased it upon release in 1978, based on how much I liked the Slowhand album that came before it. This one has been under-rated since it was first released. Great review John, and thanks for sharing.
I am an Eric Clapton fan , but for some reason I never really paid attention to this album . Thank you for inspiring me to correct that oversight . I am familiar with some of the live versions of the songs , as Just One Night is one of my favourite Live Albums in my entire record collection , Cheers !!
Hadn't listened to "Backless" in a while, John. I think the album hits its first highlights with 'Roll With It' (beautifully reminiscent of 'The Core') and 'Tell Me That You Love Me' before the standout 'Promises', and 'Golden Ring'. I'm not particularly a fan of blues rock but it's certainly an album worth having for the tracks mentioned.
I'm much more a Dylan fan than an EC fan, so I bought this album years ago to listen to the tracks written by Dylan. I know EC also recorded Sign Language, another BD song. Do you know what the 4th track is Bob gave EC? I think I read that he wrote a whole album's worth of songs with Springs. Very interesting video, i will have to dig the album out and give the other tracks more attention. Thanks, Stuart
Thanks for the detailed and positive review. I've always been curious about the follow-up to SLOWHAND so I'll definitely give BACKLESS some room in my collection.
Thanks for the great videos, John. As you say, I'm a huge EC fan, and this album is very underrated. Whoever it was that you mentioned had been giving Eric down the road - Screw them, nobody cares; Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitarists and singers of the last century.
Definitely agree 100%. Backless is a great album, even if Clapton himself didn’t like it. I like it better than Slowhand and I agree that it’s really a better proper album than anything he did in the eighties or nineties, even though he was playing great guitar during the eighties and nineties. My favorite song is Watch Out For Lucy - a great kind of pub song rocker. I only wish he’d extended the awesome soloing in the outro. The seventies were such a great time in rock music and I don’t think anybody was really as good during the eighties.
Cool video again ... I regularly go to this album for Clapton vibes ... many great tracks ... the Sunday morning vibe comments also works for me ... great cover ... good review ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland
I agree with you, I like it better than "There's One in Every Crowd", "No Reason to Cry" and "Another Ticket". I never bought those 3 on CD but used to have them on cassette.
it's been convenient to say hateful things about clapton (and van morrison) as men and artists for a while now. i saw eric when i was 15 about an hour and a half from where he lives now and i'm indebted to him for that concert alone. i've taken him for granted over the years like others leaving comments here but you are of course correct JH about this record. i got the covid vaccine and had no adverse effect. it made eric think he wasn't ever going to play guitar again. the notion that eric and especially van or going to do what they're told is ridiculous even if they're wrong which john heaton ISN'T about this record. the end.
I don't like Eric Clapton as a person ("blues player" who is an unapologetic racist, a rampant anti-vaccer, a pedestrian songwriter, weak singer, and an overwhelmingly boring and overrated guitarist...But, horses for courses...Peace and Love, Terry and Julia Tutor
thanks guys but i'm pretty sure he regrets his drunken racist speech from 76....i read his autobiography and he is very candid at owning up to his flaws....whether you can forgive him is another matter.....just don't care for final judgements on someone who was a flawed character yes but who has produced some wonderful music over the years....Harrison's affairs and inconsistencies for example are not scrutinised in the same way it seems!
@@johnheaton5667 No, John...I scrutinize George's hypocrisy all the time much to the chagrin of other Beatles fans on the internet.... Peace and Love, Terry Tutor

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for this one and would also be tempted to nominate it my favourite. Thanks John.
Nice easy country / light rock licks and tunes . In my collection got it around 1980 ..
Great review. I agree that this is one of his best.

Another great video thanks .
I really rate the album, especially side one. Great feel and grooves.
The version of Walk out in the Rain from Belfast you mention on UA-cam is the audio only, the footage is from Columbus, Ohio.
thanks for the info....interesting!!
my favorite ec lp

John .. Hi! Could you do a piece on Gallagher & Lyle? They are so great and not appreciated enough.

A great album John, l totally agree.
At the end of the day Eric likes playing blues hence the inclusion 💁♂️

SO FULL OF HIMSELF
You ain’t wrong about nothing is real..they put some so called experts on YT to shame
Eric is an easy target these days. Not helped by all the weird shit he talks. Shame.
Does it actually need a defence. It's a good album. But not a great album.
Savage garden 😂😂😂
