Risa, as someone who worked retail for 30 years, I can honestly say it takes all kinds. I remember my father used to tell me that "you can't make everyone happy, but you can sure piss them all off at once". Let what people say roll off you like water down a duck's back. When you let them upset you you're giving them your power. Don't let anyone take your power away (or change who you are). You're perfect exactly as you are.

Having worked in retail myself I can say that your father’s words are 100% true!!
Your advice is correct but sometimes it is hard to put it into practice but I think remembering what your father said will make it so much easier to remember to put into practice

Hi Risa. Unfortunately when working with the public, there is always someone trying to steal your joy. I was a Medical Clinician for 40 years and was called the B word. My comeback, with a big smile, I said “Thank you, you know that means I’m Beautiful, Intelligent, Thoughtful, Courageous and Honest.” The expression on that persons face and their loss of words was PRICELESS. So don’t take it to heart, in this life one “gets what they give”. Love your videos and have learned much from you. 🌹

I had worked in retail. I had a woman get very angry with me because she wasn’t happy with me for her fifty percent off top. She kept insisting her $35 dollar item was $10. I had the manager come to answer her questions. While checking out in a huff she informed me that she had a college education. I told her that I was sure she did not have a degree in mathematics!

I’ll never forget when I was a front store supervisor and yes I was (am but working on it) over weight.

When I was young, I worked in a chain steakhouse. I was mistreated and harassed by people of all stripes. Sometimes, people are just having a bad day or are going through some kind of issue. But in general, I think these types of people are perpetually unhappy and tend to take it out on others. Please try let these memories go because it is definitely not YOU - it is them!

The public can be brutal. I work in retail and wow do I have stories!! The most recent one was probably the most hurtful to me and I’ve been in retail over 20 years and I thought I had a thick skin but this woman thought I was being rude to her just cuz I asked her to choose her type of receipt on the pinpad. She said “ is that how you talk to customers? So I simply said “ I was just asking you to choose your receipt” well she took that as being rude and mind you she was already being rude herself by being on her phone so she then says to the person she’s talking to “ this cashier is being so rude to me , she’s probably in a bad mood because she’s making minimum wage. “ I literally lost it !!!! I said “ ok that was so not necessary!!!! Thankfully my next customer in line heard the entire conversation and said “ wow what was her problem?!?! “ it felt good to hear that because clearly that rude woman apparently is miserable and took it out on me. That incident really shook me but I had some very nice customers saying you handled that very well and we appreciate you ! don’t let her ruin your day!

I love hearing your stories. I do agree - - everyone should work with the public because it isn't easy. Just one ugly customer can ruin your whole day. Also, I think everyone should be a waitress/waiter once in their life because it makes you have a better appreciation of the challenges. Helps make you a better customer.

When I was a server in college, my worst customers were an elderly couple who were late for their movie at the dollar theatre next door. They ordered water with their entrees and stiffed me completely after yelling that the food was late and they were going to miss the opening credits. The server has nothing to do with the speed of the kitchen! Nor are they responsible for the quality of the food. I made less than $20 that night because everyone tipped $1 on their $8.95 two-for-one pasta special with free breadsticks and water.
I definitely cried when I got home... and never went back. And my friends hate going out with me because of how much I overtip lol. But they have never been servers!

@@AllySa33, So sad. I remember waitressing as a 2nd job and it was at a fancy sandwich/sundae shop. A church group of 12 came in and I worked my butt off for them. I did everything but wipe their chins off and they left me a 35cent tip. And to add insult to that, it was my dentist paying the bill.

@@mbraden8949 Oh no! That's terrible. My first job when I was 16 was working behind the counter at an ice cream shop. Back in the days of the old fashioned registers, you had to make change in your own head. I'm so bad at math, I actually lost money. My drawer came up short so much in the beginning. People would walk away laughing when I gave them back too much instead of correcting me... That just popped in my head... I must have blocked it out lol. Burger King was my second job. They tried me on the register then made me work in the back. I also got fired from a hostessing job at a Chinese restaurant and they never told me why. Needless to say I had no confidence during my high school and college years lol. I don't know if I was homely or just stupid 😂

I had a coworker who was truly wonderful with clients. However, he was a nasty beast to contractors he hired to work on his home or to retail employees. We’d hear him on his cell phone berating his house cleaner, yard guy, or the restaurant manager where he just had lunch. This happened several times a week. Overhearing these conversations was stressful for us. He really had some kind of psychological issue that caused him to harass people he knew would have to listen to him due to the nature of their work.

I've been called a racist too, similar situation. I'm 66 years old, but my mind & body feels young. (or at least in my 40's) To get to my point, I've come to a place where I just don't care what I'm called anymore. I treat ALL people the way I want to be treated. I truly feel that some people are miserable, & have a need to feel above others. I now just let them say say what they want, & simply don't react. I finish the transaction, & say thanks for shopping at *****, or whatever is appropriate. I've been told "you make my day when I come in here." .. I've been called "precious" & "adorable". I've had customers send great reviews on my customer service. So being called "bitc!, racist, "you old hag" & the likes don't mean a thing to me 😊

I've been working retail and customer service for years. Decades. And many people are decent. Some people are in a bad mood and share it. And some people need to be (more) medicated. 😂
Now I work in a state food stamp and Medicaid office. I'm the first face people see when you walk in the door. And to many people, I'm the face of "government" when they're frustrated about their benefits. 🙄
I've developed lots of techniques for coping and deflection, and I've done my share of crying in the back room. I also have a collection of cards, notes, letters, (and a couple of houseplants) from people who appreciated my help. I try to focus on them.
Risa, you're the real deal, honest, sweet, genuine, and level. If someone doesn't like it, they can go elsewhere to have the day they deserve! 😂😘💐

I’ve watched you for a long time and find you to be the most beautiful, kind, non aggressive influencer that would never push products, you don’t have a mean bone in your body. So much emotions from clients they just dump or project on you as the service person. It got so bad in my last years of service that I got into a burm out and quit my job to never return! Never EVER will I return in that industry. I still love make up, I still do the whole sjabang on my face every day. It just make some happy!🥰 In my burnout I started painting and creating other things. As long as I can work with colour and shapes and such, I am happy to be just the wife of a loving husband and be there for my friends. Thank you for showing light to the darker side of retail. 🙏🙏❤❤

Heck no!! But this one particular lady spent her entire time in the store implying my racism and trying to pull me into an argument. Your descriptions of what happened with these two customers made me feel you could be a girlfriend sitting with me over coffee. Please DO tell more stories! We love hearing about your life.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. It is frustrating when someone misconstrues your actions based on their own insecurities. I agree that everyone should have to work on retail in order to appreciate how difficult it is. There might be a whole lot less nasty customers. I did my stint at Talbots/ made great friends, gained experience and a great work wardrobe to boot! But also had my share of very uncomfortable interactions! Keep being you! ❤

I love your personal life stories. When I was in University, I worked every kind of job to pay for school. Most of it was retail. I can’t even count how many insane stories I have. And I know I was a good worker, I was a good person. I’ve never been fired, I have glowing references from every employer I had in my life (I am 44 years old now so that’s saying a lot). People are just people. You never know where someone is coming from. I’ve learned it may be nothing to do with me, they are coming after a bad day/week/year or have something going on. Often you are the one they may lash out at yet not knowing you.
I used to analyze and feel bad for every interaction that wasn’t perfect. Even 99% was not good enough. But now I learned I can’t do that. It can get to you.
You are a great person. That shows through every video you make.

I've got one. As a customer, I was in a small regional department store. They had a women's petite department, but the men's was just normal sizing. No big and tall. There was rounder (rack in a circle) of Tommy Hilfiger dress slacks. I saw two big and tall men over 6' and more than 250 each flipping through the hangered pants, with hostility. They were getting frustrated and loud. A man clerk walked over and I was within hearing range. The men said, we buy this brand all the time, but you have no wide, fuller thigh styles. Where are they? The salesclerk said, Oh our store stocks the more modern cut. And I find mostly ________ sizing. I can't find my size either.
OH MY GOSH. That word ________ hit a nerve and these huge men began yelling loudly RACIST! You are a racist! We demand a manager. They moved to the front of the store and semi blocked the front doors. Demanding the manager come out and fire the clerk for hurling racial slurs. It was Christmas and the customers were mainly Seniors, and all women. There wasn't another man or more manly man anywhere. Their volume and anger increased, and most women were really frightened.
I Small frame female, said, THAT IS ENOUGH. If you don't hold it down and calm down I am going to start singing Christmas Carols and you aren't going to like it. I can't sing. It didn't stop. So I said, I know that clerk, he isn't racist. He wouldn't have "challenged" 500+ lbs of angry testosterone or said anything offensive to you. PLEASE tell us, what did he say to you that was offensive? Wanna know the word that set them off? "EUROPEAN". European sizing such as Milan, Paris, etc. 🤦‍♀ You know where they don't have SUPER SIZE Mc Donalds? It still shakes me when I remember it.

    Johnny Ross!
I too was called the B work because I had the audacity to ask a 79 year old lady for her ID so she could receive a senior discount - when I tell you she had not one single line on her face, invisible pores... wore no make up with the exception of mascara and lipstick and was BEAUTIFUL! I honestly did not think she was even the required 62 years old.... she filleted me in front of my employees and customers for asking for her ID... and refused to accept my apology... ah well... the fun of working with the public!
I cannot imagine you Risa EVER being snarky or witchy with an B to anyone! Perhaps you were just too real of a reminder that she was on the back slope and you were just finding your way to the top... young beauty in a nice person ... a reminder of who she herself was! ( or , was not!)

I look back at difficult situations and realize now that those people were the ones with the issues. New sales people were like magnets for abusers.
Although I was the very nicest person I had a plan that I would one day the worst person would approach me would and would say the most shocking thing with swear words then they would march over to my boss and she would not believe the woman. Because I was so nice. I never found that situation but it was very empowering. I actually loved helping customers.

Hello Risa!!🌸 You are such a beautiful person, inside and out. I loved this video, just talking about your experiences, although I'm sorry about the negative interactions. I worked retail back in the 90's, it was a really awesome time. I mainly worked in clothing. I have mostly good memories, and I do feel like people were pretty much respectful. Of course, I have my fair share of horror stories, lol, but for the most part, it was great! What I couldn't do is work retail today. As a customer, I see people being so rude every single time I go anywhere. Not exaggerating either. It's definitely not the same as it was back then, where stories like this were few and far between. Oh, the good ol' days. I feel for everyone who now has to deal with the public on an every day basis. And sadly, some HAVE worked retail or with the public, which they will point out as they tear down someone. I watch people when I'm out, it's just something I do, and find it SO hard not to interfere when I see such things. I have stories where I have had to say something, because I can't stand to see someone being abused. It's just so very different these days 😔 Anyways, hope you're having a nice 4th of July!! Take care!!🩷

Thank you for sharing the stories. My mom worked retail for over 35 years and she had similar stories. She sold jewelry and would share with me that she had to keep the purchases men made for their wives and their girlfriend straight in her head. She could not stand that men would so blatantly buy for both women at the same place. She always told me you have to be nice and keep on smiling even when people were rude or did things you did not agree with.

Risa, we are so similar… I work in retail, and I had a similar experience with a man who insisted that I was purposely not helping him. I had a group of people around me on the sales floor, and I was doing my best to multitask and help everyone (because we are short-staffed). He said that I looked at him and then at the security guard (which I absolutely didn’t do). I couldn’t believe he was making things up. But I assured him (even with annoyance in my tone) that I would indeed help him. Later, when I was helping him, he did end up apologizing, which was a shock to me. But stuff bothers me forever. I too, would never be shitty to someone for no reason, and I HATE when anyone thinks that I would, even a stranger.

I used to be significantly overweight and was waiting for a friend while she was trying on some suits at Brooks Brothers. I was casually flipping through the racks of clothes while waiting for my friend, and the sales lady marched over to me and said “You know we don’t have anything here that will fit you, right?”. I was STUNNED and speechless. I immediately teared up as it was embarrassing and I didnt need a salesperson to remind me that I wasn’t going to find plus size clothes there. I went to find a chair and my friend came out of the change room, took one look at my face, asked what happened and then changed so we could leave asap. Even years later, this story upset me.

Oh true because they are stuck! My husband works in the ER and as bad as he gets treated by the drunks and drug seekers, they are always worse to the nurses - especially the female ones. They have all been cursed at, spit upon, thrown up on, and people have taken swings at my husband for not giving them drugs. The wealthy entitiled people boss him around like he's their personal butler. Fortunately our local PD is often in there with the K9 unit. I can't even imagine what they have to deal with on the daily. And this a nice community hospital with mostly geriatrics, not a trauma center.
