Is the total weight (minus the camera) more or less than a regular ronin S set up? Also what is the run time if you were to add a monitor and also power the monitor from the v mount?
Its slightly heavier, but the battery is going from a 34Wh (ronin s battery) to a 98Wh battery. For run times I couldn't tell you for sure, but we often use the BMPCC 4k with the portkeys monitor and power them both from 98Wh batteries and it gives us lots of run time. I would guess well over 3 hours run time.
@@DuncanDimanche-sreview im a noob...what would you suggest besides using the vmount to power the camera/follow focus and a battery directly attached the monitor?
We actually contacted BM Design asking them, and their response was as long as you turn the devices on in sequence and not simultaneously there should be no issues. They said there's no problems powering both off v-mount. Although to your point I have seen seen some horror stories on forums about trying the HDMI port. We power all our pockets and BM5 monitors at the same time using v-mount batteries and d-tap splitters and have never had any issues....yet haha

X 8 you can get the nato monitor mount from smallrig and a 4” nato rail and mount it upside down on the side where the control stick is. most monitors have a flip / auto rotation, and you’ll probably want a longer video output cable
Great build! Have you tried powering the camera and focus motor from the 12v power box on the gimbal itself using this rig? (trying to avoid the cable going down to the dtap splitter)
The camera and motor work great through the power provided through the ronin. It's really weird to see this rig loaded down with those awful cable options.

We used this smallrig rail clamp and screwed it into the top. A super handy piece to have for camera rigging! It's also pretty difficult to balance the pocket on the ronin S without counterbalance weights, smallrig also makes some weights that we use. www.smallrig.com/smallrig-single-15mm-rail-clamp-1549.html
@@threefoldtv Yeah! I got the counter weights but i couldnt mount the rail because the ssd was in the way. I'll give this a try though! The gimble build looks great but I worry you'll start getting worn out quite quickly I guess?
Cool setup but the one thing everyone seems to forget about is the functionality of the Ronin S buttons and joystick - kind of pain in the ass to let go of the gimbal with one hand and only hold it in another (off centered) to reach the joystick/mode/front trigger buttons. It depends on what type of work you do though...
Marcel Pinter well, the dude who posted the original version of the rig answered that question in the comments - he has the 3 user modes set for soft, medium, and hard (almost sport mode) so he doesn’t have to use the front trigger. I tend to use headlock follow often (slow pan up from the ground while walking up or following) but you can get the same feel with a quick feeling mode. I like the idea of taking off 12” of swing weight from the bottom and giving it more of a man-cam feel than camera on a stick. I would check out the original video for this rig though - he’s way more thorough in this design theory and practice.
very nice rig but with little problem. you can't pull focus. so i think you need to use TiLTA TA-SFH5-57-G Focus Side Handle with nucleus follow Focus.

So, I had a bunch of these pieces and put a rough version of this rig to see if I liked the ergs before buying the power base - how do you use the ronin-s trigger under the battery if you are re-setting the gimbal position or holding the trigger for a headlock follow?
Good question! When we made this video we were still waiting for our key-grip handle from Portkeys to come in. Now that we have it we use it in conjunction with the nucleus Nano motor and it works super well. The handle is able to connect to the Nucleus nano motor and have a bluetooth connection to the Pocket camera (at the same time) which allows us not only to pull focus but trigger record and make changes to camera settings all from the handle.

We plan to make an updated Ronin S rig video with these new modifications as well.
Look cool but I dont believe focussing on your own works. Cause it looks heavy and focussing with the focus wheel requires you to hold the whole rig with just one hand. If it does indeed work Id be impressed and would love to see it in action :)
We were waiting for the Portkeys Key grip handle when we made this video. We now have that and use that for focusing as well as other camera functions With the old setup (in this video) you can reach the focus wheel while holding it with both hands, it's just a bit of a stretch.
Dont get me wrong, i like the way this looks and i love that it's shorter - but im not really seeing the benefit of using this over getting the Ronin to P4K cable
That's certainly an option but you'll get a 1/3 of the run time which means you'll need to buy a few of DJIs proprietary handle Batteries. The battery we have is a 98Wh and the handle is 34Wh. We actually tried powering the BM off the handle battery but it burned through the battery so fast.

I use my middle finger to control the focus dial, and we are waiting on the Portkeys Key grip handle which will make focus even easier. Its really not that much heavier. Our first Gimbal was the Original Ronin and we also use the Ronin 2 quite often, so coming from those gimbals this is a very lightweight nimble setup for us and we have no problem shooting all day with it. @@LeonUnity the Ronin S accepts S.Bus in via the port on the focus motor, you can get everything you need to control it remotely or via a joystick at hobby shops. You need a pwm or ppm joystick and a pwm/ppm to S.Bus converter and that's all.
@@threefoldtv I've been running a similar setup for a while now, I'm surprised more people don't have the Universal Mount. Check out my other pics on imgur, I've modified the mount to accept XT-60 universal power connectors.

Great video! I would love to see some footage, when i balance my pocket 6k to the ronin s I always get a slight wobble in the footage, Cannot figure out why! Great video again, thank you
Are you still able to access the focus motor dial?
can you do this on a Zhiyun gimbal.
Is there a gold mount plate instead of v-mount?
I imagine you could swap the vmount out for a gold mount plate. We don't have any gold mount batteries or plates so we haven't been able to try it.
Where have you placed your follow focus system?
Great rig ! What zoom is it ?
am building the same kind of idea, but with a ronins2 and a BMPCC6k pro. was worried about 2 things you might help. me with. #1, if I DTAP split for the ronins2 (using the base power block from small rig) and the other to the 2pin on the BM, do you think thats enough power, and is it safe? #2, dont you get gimble problems having a wire on the camera and another to the base (as they're separate and the wire is moving on gimble but attached to battery on base). I want to attach an HDMI to a static monitor as well as power to the 6k but they'll be attached to nonmoving base. hope that makes sense. thanks agin!!
How would you pull focus with this setup
Any chance we could see how you actually balance the 4K/6K on the RS2? I’m still a little hesitant to buy this because I’m not sure if my camera will play nice. I would like to keep it in its cage as it’s kind of a pain in the ass to take apart that far.
do you have any footage example were you're walking with this setup? also how do you control the focus pulling?
If were doing walking shots with any ronin we usually use the Segway Mini Pro so I don't think we have many walking shots with it. I use my middle finger to control the focus dial, I should have showed it in the video but spaced it out.
@@threefoldtv you mean the built in dji ronin-s focus dial correct? I'm pretty sure but just wanted to make sure and yet this would've been great to see you using it in the video.
Waow! Fantastic setup. What is the part that holds the rod for the focus motor called?
Thanks! Its the smallrig rail clamp www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Single-Clamp-Handle-Extension/dp/B00RMAZ5DS/ref=sr_1_6?crid=KERKTNE0RKNR&dchild=1&keywords=smallrig+rail+mount&qid=1587052037&sprefix=smallrig+rail+%2Caps%2C198&sr=8-6
what about just putting on a switch grip?
We recently got in the Keygrip handle from Portkeys! It is similar to the switch grip. We've started to use it on our Ronin S rig and love the ability to remotely record, adjust focus and even change camera settings. There's a video all about the Keygrip on our channel! We plan to make an updated Ronin S rig video with these new modifications as well.
This is such a unique rig. I don't think anyone has implemented something similar on youtube!
Clear Media Production huh
Can you do this with rs2 ?
Perfect!
what v mount battery do use
Look cool but I dont believe focussing on your own works. Cause it looks heavy and focussing with the focus wheel requires you to hold the whole rig with just one hand. If it does indeed work Id be impressed and would love to see it in action :)
We were waiting for the Portkeys Key grip handle when we made this video. We now have that and use that for focusing as well as other camera functions
With the old setup (in this video) you can reach the focus wheel while holding it with both hands, it's just a bit of a stretch.
Very very nice!!!
@@threefoldtv Definitely a big jump in run time!! Very happy to see that this is an option/how to do it!
@@threefoldtv Is it possible to still use the Ronin to P4K cable? That way there isn't a cable tugging on the camera, and you wouldn't need the D-tap splitter?
@@NitroColaSSC That's a great idea, I have to imagine it would work just fine. We might pick up this cable and give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion! www.amazon.com/Alvins-Cables-Blackmagic-Pocket-Stabilizer/dp/B07SV6GFGQ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=ronin+s+cable+to+blackmagic+cable&qid=1590768727&sr=8-1
how much does this rig weight?
I have a similiar rig, that weighs about 6.8kg (BMPCC4K with a Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 and a SmallRig full cage)
You could have mentioned the end cost. Lol 😂
Спасибо, интересно получилось, посмотрю, что получится купить.
dope
You just turned a one handed gimbal into a a two handed setup. Why?
i did it
You bet you did
Awesome! (much smaller but I made a similar build video recently w/ some DIY wooden handrips: ua-cam.com/video/JNgall3MPSE/v-deo.html) - also, I've been keeping an eye out for a low mileage ambulance to turn into a grip truck after your video a week or two ago :) keep up the good work!
oh
Great!
Now pull focus 💀
anybody wondering as of Oct 2020 this rig is $727
Thanks for doing the digging for us 😃
Looks heavy.
It's slightly heavier but really not as heavy as it looks. We've found it very manageable to shoot with without a support vest.
No proper access to follow focus control ? Thanks but no thanks. I'd rather just switch batteries. This thing must be too heavy for a entire day of shooting.
There is definitely even lighter solutions out there, but this checks all the boxes for us personally.
@@threefoldtv I'd rather stick to my lighter setup using the ronin S, nucleus Nano and simply switching batteries on the fly. Not really that hard tbh and way more handy to manoeuver.
dude this rig costs way too much freaking money. way overkill. for a 2500 dollar camera? thats a 2500 dollar rig
The smallrig mounting ring is garbage. Had it slide soooo many times in the middle of shooting no matter how tight you have it.
Dang that sucks to hear, we haven't had any slipping with ours. The screw came loose once but some thread locker and tighting if down seemed to keep it snug. Maybe you got a defective part, might be worth reaching out to smallrig.
V-Mounts... get Gold Mounts instead.
