Never thought I would see a hurricane involve mountains in the US. And turn rivers into tsunami flash floods,and I've been in flooding in the frontier ranges,but this was so different.
So, the flooding is largely from the failure of dams setup many years ago to control the flow of the rivers in the area. Unfortunately, several have failed and there was substantial rain/winds on top of that.

Normal life in these mostly-red areas will take a long time to restore, if ever, simply due to terrain making clearing debris and rebuilding washed-out roads and bridges take longer than they do in flatlands. How will they do something as simple as being able to vote in a few weeks when they may not even have reliable access to food, water, or power by then?
It’s not just NC! East Tn has whole towns that are just GONE! Hundreds of people are still missing. It’s so much worse than msm is showing, than even being shown here. People really don’t understand the level of destruction that has happened here! It will take years just to get roads back. There are places that are only accessible by helicopter.

I remember Frederick and Ivan in Alabama and that was no fun 6 weeks till 2 months without power getting ice water and MREs and diapers for my baby in Frederick. It was hard just walking to a truck what's a 8 month old baby. It was a horrible horrible storm and this one was a lot worse than frederick. I pray for everybody that you get what you need quickly

Biltmore was flooded out. Not sure about the Billy Graham library because it's in Black MTN. They have shut down the interstate because of flooding and mud slides.
I ithink he nails this issue here - the communities need to address the changing climate and that these storms can and will happen - and how to be prepared to deal with it. Places that go through these types of storms are often better equipped to deal with the aftermath and how to work the recovery and rebuild. I hope that W. NC will take away many new lessons going forward. Mountain tropical storms that come from hurricanes are indeed VERY REAL and happen. Just because it's not the coat, doesn't mean it can't come to a mountain town near you. It happens in New England in the mountains and far inland - flooding and tropical storms have blown through in more recent years. Community pulls together and just gets out there and starts recovery efforts, banding together as able, checking on neighbors, etc. It's the only way to move forward as fast as possible.
