    Dany told Tyrion to invite Jon specifically to bend the knee. Tyrion deliberately left that out of the letter he sent to Jon. So, Jon shows up with no idea he's there to bend the knee, and Dany is confused when he refuses. He could've refused by raven, he didn't have to sail all the way there just to tell her "nah" to her face, and she probably thinks he did it just to be insulting (bcuz that's the type of thing the slaver's bay Masters would've done). The hostility of this meeting stems directly from that miscommunication. Her guard immediately goes up, because she's dealt with enough ppl who want to manipulate, diminish or depower her, and Jon appears to be more of the same. He has sailed all the way there to say no to her face, then proceeds to ask for literally everything she has, while offering nothing. Then proceeds to tell her that the throne doesn't matter, as the threat beyond the wall will kill everyone...while maintaining that Northern Independence is somehow still important. That last one especially makes no sense. The WWs are coming from beyond the wall, the North are gonna be the first to go. She just said if he bends, she'll help and he declined. So at this point, she already doesn't fully believe him, and him refusing the assist in favor of Northern Independence says to her that either the threat isn't that pressing, or it doesn't exist. She doesn't list the things she's been through for sympathy, she's letting him know she's been through too much to be played by whatever game he's playing. She's assumes he's using fear tactics (the NK, the army of the dead etc) to bend her to his will, because she has literally had advisors from almost every kingdom and none have ever mentioned anything about ice zombies. Her reaction to Jon this episode was more than reasonable. The reality is outside of Jon, Bran, Meera, the Wildling and a few nights watch men, nobody believes in White Walkers. Even Sansa in the last episode was more concerned about Cersei than the Night King. If his own ppl who know and trust him barely buy this Army of the Dead stuff, why would Dany? We know Jon is a good guy who is telling the truth and needs help, she doesn't, nor does she have reason or the luxury to immediately assume otherwise yet. Ppl always acknowledge that Jon's choices affect his ppl in the North, but the same goes for Dany. The Dothraki, the Unsullied, The Reach, Dorne (somewhat) are her ppl, they are her priority. She's can't afford to drop her responsibilities to them and prioritize Northern interests over the lives of those sworn to her, especially not on the word of a complete stranger that she doesn't trust. And she's definitely not gonna do it while she's in the middle of a war with Cersei. It doesn't make sense.

    It always amazes me how people flip on Daenerys when they get to this episode.
    1. She has to come off more aggressive now that she’s in Westeros, no one takes women in power seriously unless they are. No one took Cersei seriously until she blew up half of King’s Landing.
    2. She has no idea who Jon Snow is. She only heard his name for the first time in the last episode. Why in the world should be so ready to help him without asking for anything in return. She even says that she will help if he bends the knee. Jon also made this same bend the knee proposition to Mance Rayder seasons ago. He’s had the SAME mindset before and no one gave a shit.
    3. Dany has never heard of the White Walkers. They are only believed to be real in Northern Westeros and she grew up on the other side of the world. To everyone else, they are a fairy tale. And before people say “she has dragons”. People have seen dragons throughout recorded history in their world and their is proof in the form of skulls.
    I never understand why Daenerys gets so much hate in this season. Maybe Jon should work on being more strategic and competent as a leader. He came with no proof and not a single thing to offer in return.

      Blake Hunt I know that the White Walkers are a threat but as I said, he came with no proof of that threat. In her head she has no need for his help in mutual survival because she doesn’t believe that they exist regardless of if they do or not.
      In her mind the only real threat at the moment is Cersei and this conversation happened directly before she knew that any of her allies had been taken out. In that moment she was winning against Cersei and didn’t know or believe in the White Walkers.

    • @CaptainPikeachu

      Blake Hunt mutual survival based on no evidence. I don’t get why y’all acting like Dany has somehow seen all the seasons of the show or something. How the hell is she suppose to just take it on someone else’s word that it’s mutual survival? Jon is literally a stranger. Do you believe every stranger that comes across your path?
      If a stranger told you we need to ensure mutual survival from an alien invasion, are you going to just accept that or would you expect evidence first?

    Annnnnd that's why the North didn't want Jon going to meet with her. LOL it's always fun watching people react to this episode because so many people expected that Jon and Daenerys would get along from the start just because they're fan favorites but they don't know anything about each other. They also have a complicated family history and both of them pose a threat to each other's claims. I was happy to see Cersei get revenge and Tyrion is sketchy. I'm calling it now. R.I.P. Here is the reality, both Dany and Jon are rather young and blunt and inexperienced when it comes to ruling, which is why they have advisers like Tyrion and Davos who have more finesse, who have more experience in the politics to understand when certain things need to be said or not.
    Dany has no reason to think well of Jon Snow, he’s a stranger to her whom she had summoned with specific orders to bend the knee, he came and didn’t bend, so of course she is upset. Dany has clawed her way through every obstacle, she’s had people question her, insult her and try to silence her for so long of course she’s not going to take some other guy she doesn’t know trying to tell her what she needs to do. As Tyrion even says, Jon can’t just expect everyone to fall in line and believe what he believes, it’s not reasonable. He can’t just expect Dany, who came to conquer Westeros and get back the throne to just give it all up that she’s worked and bled for and just go do something else on the word of a stranger.
    Jon of course is always thinking big picture, he’s the only one who’s really seen the threat to the North and faces it everything in his mind is all about that. So of course when he meets Dany, he wants her to see his point of view and he wants her to help him because he sees that it won’t matter who sits on the throne of the dead comes. Jon has the better vantage in seeing the bigger picture.
    But again, Jon doesn’t communicate that well, that has always been a flaw of his. That inability to not just expect others would accept his word because he said so is literally what got him killed, because he was so busy looking at big picture that he’s forgotten the little details. So Jon’s inability to communicate effectively matched with Dany’s lack of patience for strangers she sees as trying to silence her is not going to work. Not without a mediator like Tyrion who knows both persons to know how to present things to both of them.
    You need to remember that Dany didn’t see 6 seasons of Game of Thrones, she’s been on the other side of the world literally going through hell to get to where she is, her dream about to come true, why would anyone think she would give it up just because a stranger told her to?

    Olenna went out like a boss! Obviously Dany is not gonna trust someone right off the bat, saying that there is an army of zombies coming to destroy them all. Not gonna believe that, I was frustrated at first but then I put myself in her shoes and got it. Why the hell would I trust someone I just met and they proclaim an army of the dead is coming. No, I wouldn’t believe them either.
    You should also realise that Cersei is off the rails. She’s the Mad Queen. When the Mad King burned people alive, he smiled. When Cersei blew up the Sept, she smiled.

    • @jessisaac6367
      @jessisaac6367 5 років тому +5

      LokiTetch yes I get your point. But Jon is related to the Starks. One of the houses that drove her family off the throne. Yes, I know he was the Mad King but he was family. But also helped kill Rhaegar, her cousins, all of them. Even though they weren’t involved the killing of children, but she doesn’t know that. The name Targaryen died until she went to Drogo and the name was reborn and it kept growing until this point. To her, Yara wasn’t a threat. They came to her to work with her, help her get the throne and kill her Uncle. A compromise.
      But as soon as she sailed for Westeros, she was officially in the great game. The game for the throne. She needs to not trust fully but requires them to earn trust. Obviously I can’t mention future events as it would spoil. But he can’t go in and demand stuff when he wasn’t willing to compromise, she is not gonna fight for something that she believes doesn’t exist, but we know it exists.
      And now she’s taking Olenna’s advice, “be a dragon.” She’s not gonna believe the first word and fight for a man who was a part of the family that helped destroy her house. And is competition for the throne, even though she doesn’t know that he doesn’t want the throne, just to fight the dead and make sure the living beat them.

    • @jessisaac6367
      @jessisaac6367 5 років тому

      LokiTetch yeah a little bit. I agree with you. I didn’t like how it went wither. But Jon was a little hypocritical with how he approached Dany. He told her he didn’t trust her which is fair but said that her father burned his grandfather and uncle alive. But... he allowed two children who’s fathers fought with the Bolton’s and betrayed the Stark’s and allowed them to live and have their family home. When he should have executed them for betrayal but he didn’t. Which causes both of them to be hypocritical. So I agree with you with Dany. The meeting could have went better for both of them.

    Its true Jon Snow doesnt know Dany and feels he shouldnt bend the knee. However Dany's point of view makes sense because she also doesnt know Jon Snow, so why should she abandon the goal she has been after for the entire show and worked so hard to achieve and give up all her assets to this guy she a)hasnt met and b) can provide no proof of this threat. And she has met powerful men before, Jon Snow is no different in her mind. Can we recall season two in Quaarth? We know Jon Snow is a good guy that is the only difference here. Both parties do not trust the other and Dany just comes across badly because we know this time that Jon is worth fighting for and his cause is real.

    Correct, the Jon/Dany conversation was "clouded".
    For how many seasons have you talked about how Dany was going to mess up Cersei, but did you ever considered the north as part of that conquest?
    Dany is a woman in a position of power, who has one goal, to retake her father's throne. If she doesn't, she dies, if she is lucky. Her name, as has been proven, is a target on her, for life.
    Her first meeting on this side of the world, from her perspective, is vital. And in walks this young man calling himself king of the largest territory of the land that she wants to rule.
    This meeting was never going to go well. They weren't having the same conversation.
    Dany saw this as a political power negotiation. The first step in her life's goal. Jon was there demanding stuff for free, with no consideration to who he was talking with.
    "Let me mine the island, give me your army, ignore your life's goal and the massive army in KL, and come north, there are zombies."
    As usual Jon's heart is in the right place, but he doesn't think things through. He wants to convince someone of something that he knows is real, and he expects others to just believe. This is why he got betrayed and killed. He is completely useless at communication.

      @LokiTetch Agreed. She also seemed much more well-disposed to Olenna and Ellaria. However, none of their families rebelled and overthrew her family. After Tyrion, Jon's really the only other person from a rebel family that she's encountered. However, Tyrion came to her as an outcast (though I would argue she was still pretty hard on him in their first meeting); Jon comes as King of a territory which used to fall under the rule of her family.
      So, the situations are a bit different, though I admit she was especially cold to him. (...which I still wonder if it was because she didn't know how to handle finding him attractive.)

    Dany and Jon meet. I've been waiting for you guys to see this since I first found your channel. Now, Dany has been through a lot. Keeping all that she's done in her C-plot, this is the first time she has ever met a just ruler. Think of that.
    She's met slave-masters, raiders, bourgeoisie, and warlords. She's experienced the worst crimes against humanity and had people defend them to her by simply saying, "But it's our tradition. Don't judge us." Jon Snow, King of the North is the first decent human being she's ever tried to dethrone. Elected as Night's Watch Commander and chosen by the Northern Lords. Ally to the Free Folk beyond the Wall. Protector to the Vale and Riverrun by genuine love and camaraderie. And now SHE'S the one trying to rule them by using excuses like "But it's tradition." After breaking so many chains and telling millions of people that they have freedom, she can only say to Jon that she was born higher than him and because his ancestor swore under threat of death to obey her ancestor, he should, too.
    I'm just really interested to see how Martin and the Game of Thrones writers are going to end this. Because we've all seen a dozen stories about Jon's situation: the humble young man who is secretly royal and everyone is happy to throw a crown on his head. How many stories have you ever seen about the opposite: the ambitious young person who bleeds, sweats and cries for the crown only to be told that the people want a democracy/independence and don't need a royal.
    CAN Dany accept that? After everything she's done to get to Westeros? Or, to quote Two-Face, will she live long enough to see herself become the villain?

    Sansa: *says that the breastplates need fur*

    I love your reactions and I understand that when you love characters, you might get carried away but come on! Jon is my all time fav character too but I thought since the first watch that the scene between him and Dany was pretty realistic and good, considering all the circumstances. They couldn't be bffs since the beginning (that'd be just stupid) but they could easily become enemies yet they didn't

    The beef between the Martell's and the Lannister's started long before the death of Cersei's daughter. Tywin was responsible for the death of Oberyn's sister which The Mountain confessed to doing when he killed Oberyn. She was married to Rheagar Targaryen and she and her children were killed during the takeover of King's Landings when Robert rebelled against the mad king. The Martell's have been seeking revenge against the Lannister's for awhile. Oberyn's death added fuel to the fire. Yes he died during the trial by combat but it was misstep in a larger plan.

    Y'all keep debating on whether Jaime is a good person or not, but he's really just a relatable character to everyone watching the show (except for the sister thing). He killed the mad king because he told him to burn everyone in the city and he consistently shows his morality afterwards. The only things he does bad is because of his sister. He takes a while for him to learn from his mistakes (same as Sansa), which makes him human.

    One thing to remember is that the last dragons that were alive was around 100 years ago I think and they were the size of dogs because of being contained while the White walkers haven't been seen in about 1000 years so to everyone the army of the dead is just a scary story told to children where as dragons they have factual evidence of them.

But remember, they already hated the Lannisters because the mountain raped and killed Oberyns sister, and they blame the Lannisters for that. So regardless of whether or not Oberyn lost to the Mountain, Oberyns girl would still hate the Lannisters.

    There are a few main characters who have a clear, forward arc in GoT. You have to look at them in context to see those arcs clearly. The Stark children are on the side of the right, yes, but you also have to remember that they were raised by Ned Stark, one of the most honorable guys ever and Catylin stark who was also much in the same vein. Two good parents, raised honorable kids.
    Now when you think of Jaime, remember that he was raised by Tywin Lannister, whose only code was essentially "loyalty to their family, power and ambition". He was a formidable guy. Tyrion has a good heart and a code, kinda in part because he was rejected and never seen as his own by Tywin.
    That leaves Cersei and Jaime. Cersei is all narcissism, whereas Jaime has a good heart but this is the family he was brought up in. So he could have easily become like Cersei, or Tywin, but he keeps trying to redeem himself throughout the show. But he cannot leave his father's first principle of "family first" behind him. He sees that as his first duty.
    Jaime was also brought up with a knight's code, so he is chivalrous, corrupted only by the Lannister family's own view of the world. He always loved Tyrion, and saved his life. He is loyal to Cersei despite her many flaws, which he forgives because he is devoted to her. And he killed the Mad King to save the city.
    Think of what Brienne, who is one of the most decent and honorable person in the show right now, sees in him. She says to Jaime that she sees honor in him. And she trusts him. To me, there are two characters on this show who have transformed from bad to good or at least trying to be good and are complex in a fascinating way. One of them is Jaime. The other is the Hound.

      What about Theon? He's been on an identity journey considering the two sides of a coin families he was brought up in.

      my fave character developments of the show!! Jaime, Sandor, Theon, and Sansa. 👌🏼

    • @WildModesty
      @WildModesty 5 років тому +2

      @@finessence808 Theon's journey is quite fascinating too, but he doesn't have that 'forward arc' I was talking about, and I mean morally. He has an arc, for sure, and goes through many changes, but for me, from a moral/character point of view, his story has more to do with his remorse, and how he was broken down by Ramsay. The Hound And Jaime, to me, on the other hand, are more at war with their identities and nature, not specific betrayals or actions.
      Theon is more a character that is broken down so much, that he is forced to re make himself and in the process deal with who he is. Sandor and Jaime, though having taken heavy damage themselves, have been conflicted characters from the beginning. What is done to them in the show does not give birth to their inner conflict, in other words. But it's just how I see it, and there can be many interpretations of these characters depending on which view you favor subjectively. :)
