Nah they aren't getting screwed. They get 3 mill for just turning up and cooking. Gus spent millions on the lab, constructing it and furnishing it with top of the line equipment. He has a huge staff - both on and off the books - he pays ALL the bills, donations, transportation costs, Los Pollos Hermanos costs, taxes for his legit business, hush money, etc... and on top of that, Gus takes all the risk. Three mill for basically just doing a hassle free 9 to 5 is a seriously sweet deal.

Yeah it's really the risk factor and the infrastructure that Walt and Jesse are giving away the lion share for. Not to mention that at this point, they can't wash that money as they don't own legit businesses. There's a point where the amount of dirty money that an unemployed person and a former chemistry teacher can use is to high just doesn't matter because they just can't touch it without arousing suspicion and it's probably less than 3 million anyways. If anything by paying them more Gus is just endangering them and his organization. If Gus goes down as we know later on, the organization is set up so that nobody will flip while inside. There's a good chance Gus will go down and Walt and Jesse will just get on with their normal lives if that was how it goes =P

Another cool thing about the episode is that it is at the exact half-point of the show and everything seems to be going rather smoothly. The immediate cartel threat has been eliminated, Hank is off their trail, Gus seems to be happy with how things are running and Walt and Jesse are working well. Having the time to obsess over a fly highlights how calm things are. Like I said, half-point of the show, in the eye of the storm...

The reason Walt started freaking out behind the wheel was because his talk with Gustavo made it clear to him how much control Gus has over his life. As long as Gus wants to use him, he'll be kept alive. The minute Gus no longer has use for him, he is a liability to Gus & his life is in danger. Franz Kafka was writer from Czech Republic who was basically one of the first fantasy/sci fi/horror writers. his stories were considered surreal and so to describe something as Kafkaesque is to say that it is bizarre, terrifying, oppressive, brutal, and bleak. his most famous story is about a man who transforms into a giant insect.

And then it makes sense that the next episode with the fly would show Walt is becoming hella paranoid about his job.

Walt broke in twice. The first time he broke in, was to get the meth so he could make the deal. That's where he initially saw Jessie and Jane passed-out on heroine. Because of that, Walt wouldn't give Jessie his half of the money. A day or two later, Jane blackmails Walt, so Walt gives Jessie the money. Walt then goes to the bar and meets Jane's dad. Right after the bar, he goes back to Jessie's where he and Jane are passed out again.
But I think you missed that the reason Jane starts gagging on her own vomit is also Walt's fault. Jane was careful that she and Jessie fall asleep on their side and are propped up with pillows so that doesn't happen. When Walt is shaking Jessie trying to wake him up, Walt accidentally rolls Jane onto her back. Then she starts gagging and he doesn't help her. So it's not just that he didn't save her, he's responsible for positioning her onto her back also, otherwise she would've not choked on her own puke.

To me the scene at the end of episode 9 where Skyler tells the lie (love it btw - especially when Walt and Marie lean in) shows Walt two things: that she, on some level, understood some of his less-selfish reasons for doing what he did, and two, that she was capable of the kind of elaborate lies that he was. I believe that Walt was flattered by the way he was portrayed in the story and happy to help his brother in law, who he does legitimately care about.
The bit at the end, though, when she calls him out to his face? That is the only part that caught him truly off guard. He may have been surprised by Skyler's story, but in no world could he fathom that Hank's attack was some how his fault. Walt always finds ways to push the blame.

Franz Kafka was a novelist from Prague and they would say that something is Kafkaesque because it was similar to one of his novels which means something really bad it was going on Heroes some really fantastic heavy stuff

"I dunno what that says... Kaff Kess Kay."
Kafkaesque. It's like having the qualities of Franz Kafka, the author and philosopher. He was a major influence on western art and culture. Pronounced "Koff-Kuh".
It's like saying someone is "Kanye-esque" or "Picasso-esque", they exhibit the personality quirks and charisma or some kind of trait associated with a famous person that also exhibits those qualities.

I hope your Patreon ppl told y’all lol cuz y’all timelines a little out of sorts. The night Jane died, Walter left his house to give Jesse & Jane the money. He left, went to the bar, and met Jane’s dad unknowingly. He spoke to Walter about family, and Walter went back to Jesse’s (easy to get in because days prior he broke in to get the meth). And so he shakes Jesse, that made Jane roll onto her back, and he watched as she choked on her vomit and did not save her.

Little trivia...the reason this episode exists is that they were over budget on that season and needed to cut costs. So they wrote what's called a "bottle" episode using one already existing set, so no location expenses, and with a minimal cast...in this just the two lead characters. But they wrote an outstanding one.

This was a great series! And I've said it before but I really enjoy your reactions. Whether its music or movies, its fun to watch you both. Asia, I love your laugh, and BJ, I love how you make all of us laugh! I'd also like to mention that you always either reply to or drop a heart to everyones comments and suggestions. It may seem trivial, but a lot of reaction channels miss that bit of interaction with their fans. Thanks for doing it right. Oh, and by the way, watch Hitchcock's Psycho. I swear you wont be disappointed! Thanks for what you do.

What i interpret the fly meaning is walts guilt for many things including walt killing jane so walt wants to kill it and not feel this way no more but just like jessy story about her aunt , walter keeps hearing the fly and his realization that no mater what he does the fly will always be there or the guilt

But he has to run a chicken franchise, pay its employees and their benefits, taxes to keep Fed off him, pay drivers, workers, transport costs and fuel, security (including Mike), legal protection from Saul, run a laundromat, etc etc. People always think its Scrooge McDuck; but all that money is needed to stay in business while avoiding the Law. Plus he had to pay for lab and give cartel its cut.

The fly at the end symbolizes Walts cancer is coming back, just like the story Jesse told of his relative whacking at the possum in the walls and even once the possum was killed she started whacking athe walls again and Jesse knew that was bc of the cancer spreading to her brain. They killed the fly but Walt seeing it again at the end is the same thing.

This is a "bottle episode". When a show spends a lot of its budget it does a low budget episode that is usually in one location. It focuses more on character development and dynamics.
This is directed by Rian Johnson who did Last Jedi, Knives Out and Glass Onion.

The reason for the episode with the flie , is that by the end of the season they were over budget. And needed to film an episode as cheap as possible. So they came up with the flie episode because it only required 1 stage to film it. Great episode tho , it showcases the great writing and chemistry the 2 actors have.

And somehow their low-budget bottle episode happened to be the first episode directed by the great Rian Johnson, who would go on to helm the season 5 episodes "Fifty-One" and "Ozymandias," the latter of which many call the best episode of the series and some critics call the best television episode of all time.

Ironically, the season 2 episode "Four Days Out" was intended to be a bottle episode as it was all shot on an open lot adjacent to Albuquerque Studios, less than 200 meters from the stage door. It ended up being one of the more expensive episodes of that season.
