My First Attempt At Hardening Metal: Making A Scraper

- This week I'm making the third tool in the BHI distance learning course, making a hand scraper. This tool can be used for making very flat surfaces and is a handy tool for a clockmaker. I'm attempting hardening for the first time. It's fun, you should definitely try it.

I started watching your videos today after downloading the BHI DLC sample lesson. I was very nervous about continuing, but after watching your first video I got the inspiration to continue. Why are you not making any new content??

This is excellent work. the polishing looks better and better. From a metallurgic perspective, the large grains on one side and smaller grains on the other would indicate a different heat during cooling. reccomendations would be having a wider torch to spread out the heat more evenly.
Now. take my comment with a grain of NaCl, I've just reasently learned this stuff in school.
would making the stuff Clickspring used be allowed? the salty gunky stuff to even the heat profile?
cant wait for the next one to be published. train-calculations are something I've wanted to learn more about.

The soap should be borax, like the laundry soap, it helps prevent oxidation but it usually comes in powder form so I can see how a paste would be necessary. Heat the metal until it is no longer magnetic then quench. Look up blacksmithing/knife making videos for a lot more in depth knowledge.
I have already been following your videos from the beginning now. Always wanted to start learning watchmaking or servicing, and I'm seriously thinking about doing the BHI course myself too. But does the first part include servicing watches too? Or is that only covered in Part 2? I can't really find anything about the content after the first chapter, as I see it's mostly focused the first few lessons on creating tools yourself.
Really enjoying your videos a lot, they are actually pushing me into this new career path. Really motivating, keep up the good work!
