    The leaves of Wild Betel (Piper sarmentosum) have a distinctively aromatic flavor, and can sometimes be found fresh at better Asian markets. It is easy to grow from fresh cuttings obtained in a market, and makes a lovely houseplant that is happy outdoors in warmer months and indoors through the winter.

      Hi Theodore, thanks for sharing this good info and noting that it makes a great houseplant!

    Really neat recipe and the end result looks delicious. I always love watching you share ideas of how to do things. I like the stem tucking idea and love it when you give alternative choices as well. I don't have easy access to betel or perilla leaves, but I wonder if maybe grape or cabbage leaves would also work (give it a Mediterranean flair with those leaves). :)

      Doodah Gurl Hi DG, I've used just about everything because betel leaves are tough to find even in Southern California. Grape leaves and cabbage definitely work. I've also tried a yam leaf, spinach, bok choy, kale, and swiss chard. Appreciate you stopping by and your continued support. :)

    Love your channel Trang! You're my go to person for Vietnamese dishes! Can we substitute the Vodka 5 spice marinade with something else? Like with 5 spice powder?

  • @CowTaurog
    @CowTaurog 9 років тому +1

    Never even heard of these, it looks like shiso leaves (some sort of japanese pepper) might work too, easy to find seeds and grow, not so easy to buy, but still easier than betel.

    • @RunAwayRice
      @RunAwayRice  9 років тому

      CowTaurog It does look like shiso with a similar taste and is a great substitute if you can't find betel leaves. Thanks for sharing :)

      76Lonnie Thanks Lonnie. The Vodka 5-Sprice Marinade is a recipe I shared earlier. ua-cam.com/video/rifoXmvZR2k/v-deo.html I use it quite a bit in cooking. You can substitute with 1/4 tsp five spice powder.

    Dear Trang. Thank you for another great dish. I wanna give it a try but I don't know how or where to find Betel leaves. Do they have them here in the states? Are they sold in Asian markets?

    • @irenytran
      @irenytran 9 років тому +1

      They have them at Vietnamese grocery stores in CA. If you're in the Orange County area, try A Dong Supermarket.

      Hi Giao, where do you live? I live in southern California and betel leaves are sold in some of the Vietnamese grocery stores.

    • @giaothanhpham
      @giaothanhpham 9 років тому +1

      RunAwayRice Oh ... thanks for your replies, irenytran, and Trang. I live in the East coast and there's only 1 small Vietnamese market in the area. In your video, the Betel leaves look fresh. I don't know if they carry the fresh ones here in such a small Vietnamese population. I'll check them out this weekend to see if they have any freshly frozen ones. Thank a big bunch.

      Hi Giao, I lived in PA for some time and betel leaves were difficult to find there. My leaves are fresh. I suggest using perilla (tia to), shiso or even grape leaves as a substitute. Good Luck!

    i wouldnt wash the leaves since it is already going to be fried at a high temperature which kills all if any dirt on the leaf

    • @RunAwayRice
      @RunAwayRice  5 років тому

      Heat kills bacteria but doesn't rinse away dirt particles. No washing just means more protein! :)
