this book hits different when you realise that the entire book is the conversation that patroclus had w thetis, "i am made of memories" it was literally just patroclus telling her about his life and his adventures w achilles, i'm going to go before i start crying again

I dont think its like that.. I think patroclus is telling the story as it happens and then at the end thetis comes and she asks to hear the memories..but like the way you think of it is really cool

A book hangover. Omg. This is the perfect way to describe what I'm going through right now and I didn't even know it was a thing. I finished reading this book about 2 days ago and I've been trying to get into another book but I just can't because my mind keeps drifting to Achilles and Patroclus and I keep picking up the book to go over my favorite parts. I am dying. Idk what to do with myself. I can't stop thinking about them and how heartbreaking their story was.

This is mostly true, but there were strong romantic undertones between Achilles and patrocolus in the illiad (for example, Achilles wanting his ashes mixed with patrocolus so they could be together in the afterlife.)

read this book the day after finishing the Iliad so I was crying for most of the book because everything felt so raw. it is one of my favorite books ever, the writing is superb and the characters feel so real.
Circe is a bit slower but i loved it as well just in a very different way, it felt more like a philosophical book about the nature of forever, but i had a bit of a problem with it because Circe felt a bit passive in her own life- which makes sense but i find it hard to identify with a passive character.

Yes!!! I took a few classics courses in university and so I knew the story quite well going into it and didn't think it was going to affect me emotionally as much but DAMN was I wrong. It destroyed me. I was full-blown sobbing. The way Madeline Miller was able to create such tactile intimacy between the two of them from the very beginning just blew me away. And the ending with Thetis 😭 I feel like I always go into hyped books not wanting to like them because of their hype but this one just hit different. For sure a favorite book of all time. Also, I bought this book in hardcover in 2011 when it came out and it sat on my shelf for 10 dang years and I feel like such an idiot for waiting so long 😭😂

I can't stop crying. I think about the way people live - the wrong way from the very beginning. Everyone wants to love, to have family, life, but our civilization has not yet come to peace anywhere. Each of the characters loved: Patroclus, Achilles, Breseida, Priam and Hector, and even Thetis. so many people want to love. I don't understand why our world is so cruel. And everything repeating again and again .and even now we are lost to each other in the digital world.

I knew the story but was blindsided by the after death part. Like I'd think about parts and burst into tears for a couple days after I finished, and I'm not normally that dramatic! And Achilles grief after Patroclus died really took me out as well, lol.

God, I just finished it last night and my mind was totally blank 😥 I know some Greek mythology from reading Percy Jackson and other searches relating that so I kinda knew what was going to happen. But the way it was written, especially from Patroclus's POV was EVERYTHING and broke my heart all the same.

watching you read the end i started crying. yes i have the same feelings about it as you, i read it when it first came out (10 years ago?!) and it still effects me like this. i want to reread it but i'm pretty sure i'd just cry through the whole thing. Circe is good as well but not quite as strongly emotional, maybe that's a good thing. Miller is maybe my favorite currently working writer, but i wish she had more books out, however you know they are taking her a while because she's getting all the history straight, so i'll deal with the wait.

Achilles was like my favorite.. But then the second half of the book.. He really was a egoistic little bitch.. It could all have been avoided so easily..if only achilles had gone to war... And i hate agamemnon and thetis.. But thetis did something good at the end and thats why i dont realllllly really hate her...

I loved TSOA. I went in as a person who was like... two classes shy of an ancient studies minor, so I was very familiar with the myth. I thought because I knew what happened, it wouldn't affect me as much. I was utterly wrong. It still hurts and it's been over a year lol.
Circe keeps the same beautiful writing, but has very different vibes. As much as I love TSOA and I do prefer it, I related hard to Circe and saw much more of myself in her than in either Achilles or Patroclus. Both reads were 5 stars for me :)

Yess really liked The Song of Achilles and Circe. I don’t know if I preferred Circe to The Song of Achilles. I knew what happened in The Song of Achilles, but still really liked it, but I found Circe surprised me more. Just because I wasn’t as familiar with Circe as I was with The Song of Achilles. Oh shoot Achilles is going to die and Patroclus will be left by himself!" I was so damn wrong! I actually never loved Greek Mythology.
