In college I had a professor give me an essay to read. He was an avid outdoorsmen but rarely hunted. He knew I hunted. That paper was incredible. It explained the spiritual side of hunting and how a good hunter doesn't kill just to kill, but appreciates the life he has taken and is thankful for the reward. I lost that paper and I cannot find it online to save my life. That was 11 or 12 years ago. I hope to find it some day and to give it to my children for a quick read. If I ever do find it again I need to share it

I just have to add to what Collin Rippey said. I am the new generation, and I have the confidence to say that in these 13 years I have been on this planet I can confidently say that I know more about elk and other game animals than most people of this world population that are double my age will ever know.
I think that hunting is a thing that is most of the time past down from parent to child. Hunting is something that you grow up with. I can remember from when I was maybe 4, I think back on when I would walk out into the woods with my dad (even though me being there probably drastically dropped his chances of getting an elk) he was still happy I was there. I think his happiness was a combination of spending time with his son and the fact that I wanted to be out there walking around in the wet dirt and rocks. When I was little and walking with him at the time he always pushed me to what seems like my limits of walking back then and pushed me past that. Now that I am older I am wanting to go on some hunts that I think my dad would never have considered doing when I was younger. Me and my dad are thinking about going to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to hunt elk this year, and this will be the first time my dad will have ever hiked out and camped where he stopped walking for that day. Before this year my dad has always just pulled our filth wheel up to the mountains and headed out walking at like 4 in the morning and came back at probably 2-4 in the afternoon. This has been most of my experiences with hunting for my lifetime and I hope to gain more of them with my dad soon.
Just like I said before hunting is more than just a thought in your mind like "man I just want to go kill something right now". I feel that hunting is more about spending time in the beautiful wilderness and spending time with friends that you may not see very often otherwise. I feel that my dad is hunting not as much for the reward of meat or a skull or just being able to say I killed something but in it for just the experience and memories of being out there with these animals that are 5 times your weight. I think that my dad would give up all the meat he got from an elk to his family like is parents and his brother just to have more memories out in those mountains. I hope to gain that understanding that my dad has of not being in it for the animal but being in it to be there. The animal is like the sprinkles on your cake, you can have it without but it is a nice little add on.

This video nail the point of why we hunt. It is part of us. Just the simple acting of eating is one of the most basic things we need. But taking also being responsible for where that food you eat comes from is just rewarding in its own right. Keep up the good works of spreading the word. Thanks.🦌

There are very few more satisfying moments, than sitting down at the dinner table with wild game and home grown vegetables. Enjoying that with your family not only fills your stomach but also your heart and soul.

As a kid growing up in the North of Australia fishing was my go to. Often that time fishing was with my best mate where stories (mostly bullsh!t) were told, but also long periods of silence giving my mind the time to quieten the chatter of everyday life. After moving to the US and away from the coast, I found comfort in the woods and I naturally fell into hunting. Spending time in the trees or walking through unknown lands by myself have given me the same relief and sanity. The process of taking an animals life, whether that be a fish, bird or elk, for me at least is very personal, and the act itself is not lost on me. The connection to the meat and sustenance it provides is as you say Remi, is very primal.
Love the content mate. Keep it rolling.

I feel the huge decrease in the amount of anxiety and depression I feel while out in the field is right there at the top for the biggest reason for why I hunt. It's not often talked about in the industry but man does it feel good to decompress out there. Great video Remi, thanks for sharing.

My grandpa, my dad and all my uncles had me out hunting everything as a very young kid. As my cousins grew up, we all looked forward to group hunts all the time. Great memories. I did not realize why we hunted, but later I realized our family was on the poor side and my elders did it mostly for food on the table. Once we were well off, we all kept hunting because it was our way of life. We all fell in love with nature, outdoors, maybe why I am an outdoors photographer. All the elders now are gone. My cousins got busy with their families, and I only have one hunting family member left in the Bitterroot. Last place I ever hunted. He is the only one still hunting.

I hunt for the same reason , I love how much variety I can give my family from hunting and fishing. Of course I hunt the big game but I also hunt rabbits , squirrels, all the pheasants and grouse too. Fishing for all kinds of different fish. Only through hunting and fishing can I give my family the rich proteins it gets. Now adding a garden to this combined with buying from local market and our food budget gets greatly stretched.

So many whys in why we hunt. Well-spoken Remi although I figure volumes of videos could be made on why we each hunt. Coming from no traditions of hunting my why may be different than others yet it still runs parallel to many I expect as part of the human condition.

If you ever wanna take an adult onset and his kid out in Montana just holler. I’ve learned just about everything I know about hunting from you anyhow lol. Did I see your Jeep in the Breaks last year towards the end of rifle season?

Just think of all the great Native American tribes that had very sacred hunting rituals and ceremonies, with most of those now gone because of so called “god fearing men”….haw haw haw, what kind of cowards live in fear?!?! This is not a single God’s country, this is the country of songs and stories.
