Originally released in 1988, the Guv’nor was Marshall’s first attempt to put the sound of the venerable JCM-800 in a stompbox. Now this highly coveted pedalboard classic has returned for a new generation of tone chasers. Shop it today at Sweetwater 👉 imp.i114863.net/LPe6JM
One thing that I particularly love about Nick Bowcott demos is that he uses reasonably affordable guitars and amps (Epiphone/Gibson Tribute LP's, Katana amps) which is refreshing. Considering what is available at Sweetwater, I appreciate him not grabbing a $3000 guitar for his demos. This pedal sounds great btw 🤘
Back in '92 watched a band play in a small local club. I was so amazed by the guitarist's tone that I had to ask him what was he using. It was a Gov'nor. I found one in a Pawn shop for $80.00. I still use it.when I need a killer sound.
All those glorious riffs most of them heard through my state of the art 3 inch speaker found in my 84 Tempo, back in the day. However I can now relive those moments with my fancy noise canceling headphones thanks to you Mr Bowcott sir, thanks to you.
Smart choice using a Gibson Les Paul Tribute. Unless you have a lot of money, it is the only Les Paul you need. Glad to see this pedal is being reissued.
The Intro is a recording of at least three different guitar tracks. They go out of their way to make these pedals sound so good, then when you buy one it sound nothing like the demo.
Obviously you're going to hear the best recording possible. With that said, the pedal being ran into the fx return with the presence on the amp dimed gives you the sound. Running it in the front is going to color the sound unless you have an extremely flat, clean, amp.
I have been playing through Marshall amps since the early 70s and I am blown away by these pedals. In my opinion, these are must have pedals I especially like the blues breaker, but they are all exceptional.
I like Nick's demos. He tends to demo gear like how other guitarists would use it (like boosting the pedal with the TS9 here) and his personality is fun to listen to.
I was under the impression these were going to retail for around $150-$170 . $250 is price gouging . I bought my OG for $200 in 2018 and that was my limit . These gear manufacturers know that once the Baby Boomers are out of the market , Gen X and the Millennials and Zoomers are not going to buy physical gear . This is why a really good Marshall amp head is $2500+ . Here in 10 years the used market is going to be FLOODED with gear , 80% of it OD pedals LOL
One thing I will say that I'm glad they used the proper big boy boxes instead of some little 1590b type box to placate redditor/Instagramer/gear-pageite types who fawn over "pedalboard friendly" pedals.
The amp in a box sales pitch did not work on me, so I never got one, which was a mistake when I realized it was key to the Gary Moore tone I was chasing. Duh me huh. I thought it was simply a Valvestate preamp in pedal format, so looked down my nose at it because I had a JMP-1 valve preamp. They are a little pricey. I am made in Milton Keynes too. That does not make me more expensive lol. P.S. Pricey compared to your average dirt box. But I figure there has to be some money in it to make the hassle of doing the reissue worth it I guess.
There was also a better version imo of the Guvnor that had a sweepable mids and a smaller footprint. Soundwise - these sound a touch more scooped up than I remember them.
Thanks Nick great demo. Just a question (or to anyone who knows from experience)... while the Guv and Drivemaster have the exact same circuits, less loop, some reviewers have stated that the Drivemaster has a touch more gain? And maybe compression too? ...can anyone who has played both side by side confirm this? Or is it just the slight variation that can come from unit to unit, even in the same model?
I Loved this review. I owned an original, English made unit a few years back, must have had a bad unit because it didn't sound as great as the one in this demo. I'm going to order one of the reissues. I once read that a Guv'nor with JCM800 is basically the same as a Marshall Jubilee.
Sounds almost as good as my old Valvestate 50w combo from back in 94. Wouldn’t mind one but I’d have to work out how to run it with my iRig HD 2 into my iPad. Anyone know the difference between this and the shred master?
#NickBowcott is the #Marshall #ShredMaster and now the #Guvnor. So technically Marshall released two pedals named after Nick. #TheGuvNor is #JamesTMarshall. #TheFatherofLoud HaHa #GrindRod What a great Metal Band name....
So Marshall have re-issued this good old pedal without making any improvements to it. No new features, still not true bypass, still too big and still noisy. Marshall continue to do the same as Fender and Vox. Just wrap a new marketing promotion around re-issue of the same, same old. There are other companies who make significant improvements to their products when they make a re-issue. But Marshall, Fender and Vox never do. They're usually worse. :)
think you are missing the point here , the demand for these has been evident for a long time , why change anything if this is what the customers are after ? Its a reissue , has tone exactly the same as original or its not !

Will these ship out today if purchased?
Sounds great, just like a stack!!
The tone of moore in a box. For sure. Awesome.
Very nearly bought a JHS Angry Charlie a few days ago because I wanted that Guv’nor sound. But now I can get the real thing!
This is a reissue worth getting

Not sure if I would call even a Gibson tribute affordable…..
@@vmx23 Eh, not really affordable, but more "realistic" is a better way to put it. At least for a Gibson.
Is that the dude from Grim Reaper?
@@stevewibble7467 yes
he doesn't state which amp, speaker and mics he used for his sound so this is pointless.
This is the best demo I have ever seen on UA-cam ! Bravo
Delivering The Goods, one of my favorite Priest songs ever! Great tone, great pedal.

1:34 "Strong arm of the law" by SAXON !!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Delivering The Goods, Yesss! Very convincing sounding pedal !!!

learn to play better

Very inspiring tones. Some really great licks too. Wonderful video, thanks 🤘
Bought one new in the early 90s. Stupidly gave it away in the early 00s. Will own one again in the early 20s!
Marshall pedal used by Gary Moore on "Still Got the Blues" album...
I like Nick's demos. He tends to demo gear like how other guitarists would use it (like boosting the pedal with the TS9 here) and his personality is fun to listen to.
Nick is awesome.
Great demo. It’s great to hear it through reasonably priced gear us mortals can afford, and not 9k guitar 5k amps like others
This thing sounds great. Great demo, Nick.
I like the way that pedal sounds with the tribute. Think I’ll have to get one
Nick is the coolest! He is the one who should do these Marshall pedals. Thank you Sir! Lefties Unite!
I used to have the Danelectro daddy o which is a clone of the guvnor. Wish I still had it but the reissue will be on my radar
Well, Nick is the First to go for demoing theis reissues! A Man who is Part of Marshalls Historie, and quit funny to watch💜🤘🎸 thanks
gary moore plus his soldano = mind blown in the 90's
Tell me I’m not the only one that thought “🎶He has the box 🎶 “ around 5:45 …I’ve been watching too many JHS videos lately
Thanks especially for stacking the pedal with a tube screamer
Did I hear a bit of Saxon in one of the riffs ? Great demo.
Strong arm of the law

Last year they were advertised at $150 so ya. I was excited to buy a guvnor, but not so much now.
Awesome demo!!
Excellent example of this reissue! 🎸👍🏼😊
Nick - the next pint's on me for this banger of a video.
great demo! one of these days, Nick is going totally shred on his guitar, then flip the guitar around and say, "and I am not left-handed!"
wondering what channel you are using on the katna 100 mk2? my guv"nor has been pre ordered!!
Omg I love this guy’s reviews! Hahaha! Also great playing and pedal!
Do the same with Strat...please!
This dude is pretty funny. he plays "madhouse" by Anthrax. Love it.
Amp is not listed in the description
Nice to hear some Priest in there!! 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Delivering the Goods...Just like Nick and the Guv’nor!
Great review! Thanks!
Lofty!
May favorite of the fab 4
I just built a guv’nor kit. This is timed well.
Surprised my rep didn’t contact me about buying one of these.
Marshall kept it hush hush and kept denying their release
and finally! they are back! i always loved the marshall stompboxes. but the new design reminds me of an old atari consol. kinda like it :-D
Nick was that intro song an original? It was killer 🤘
great vid!!
Fun video. I want one of these.
Nice rendition of Still Got The Blues, man.
I'm trying to learn it right now, myself. The Guv'nor helps, right? Haha
Great riffs🤘💜🎸
Love this!
What is the yellow guitar he is playing
Are you serious ??? Well it's on the Headstock ..Gibson Les Paul tribute !!
How does this stack up against a Boss Powerstack?
One thing I will say that I'm glad they used the proper big boy boxes instead of some little 1590b type box to placate redditor/Instagramer/gear-pageite types who fawn over "pedalboard friendly" pedals.

It’s coming tomo for me !
I don't understand. Does this sound like a Marshall amp even if played through another amp? Is there any point if you have a jcm already?
yes it sounds like a jcm 800 once its dialed in.
What amp and how did you set it up to work with the Gov'nor? Clean or edge of distortion?
I Loved this review. I owned an original, English made unit a few years back, must have had a bad unit because it didn't sound as great as the one in this demo. I'm going to order one of the reissues. I once read that a Guv'nor with JCM800 is basically the same as a Marshall Jubilee.
I can confirm that the reassure also made in England 🇬🇧
What a great Nigel Tufnel story
Me falta gain 😢 un pedal
para blues si nada mas . Se queda corto para solos
Lay it Down by Ratt!
Love me some Anthrax riffage!
Which amp are you using?
Madhouse with a damn good song by anthrax
great, a year ago i got an original uk one, guess i'll sell it and get the whole reissue series hahaha
What I've learned from this video? You must, with authority, slump your head at the end of every guitar solo.
I just bought an original recently.
Hell yeah
The Guv’nor is the shit
Nick. Stop shaking your finger at me. It's freaking me out!
McGreevey ?

I had one and sold it. Not my thing, a bit brittle.
Send me one Sweetwater.
Cheers Nick for the history and good explanation etc................too bad your lefthanded lol, sorry matey couldn't help myself.
Nice reissues. Way expensive tho.
Meh, my Katana MK2 has one built in... /s
Can you please include trigger warnings when a left handed guitar is about to be shown? I thought this was supposed to be family friendly
Oops, all your vintage pedals ain't worth what they used to be.

There are loads of modern pedals with all the features you want. Why complain that a clone of a vintage pedal is not more modern?
