Whenever I feel I'm the only person cleaning tapes properly and splicing tapes back together with sticky tape syndrome, it's always reassuring to take a break and come and hear someone else suffering! Thanks Phil, and keep up the fantastic work. I'll go and get back to the second sticky Hi8 tape before hitting the pile of mouldy VHS tapes...
Haha!!! Thanks for the great comment and my god isn’t that the truth! Not many of us out there dealing with the head hanging realities of all these tapes! Keep up the great work yourself mate!
Wow this is great, I have a transfer business in New Zealand and almost all the 8mm tapes I get have this issue. I tried baking and no success, I tried using a dehumidifier and no success. Have just used your method, and we have a breakthrough lol. Still had many breaks and many splices but I got 95% of the footage. Thankyou so much for sharing your expertise.
I run a transfer business in a coastal town in Australia. About 80% of 8mm tapes I receive have sticky shed syndrome nowadays. They do not like the humid climate. Also running these tapes through players often clog up the heads, so that's more wear and tear on the equipment. And you're totally right about the time it takes to manually wind the tapes. I feel your pain Phil.
Love the raw commentary. Got me laughing. I decided to digitize my mom’s old tapes. The VHS tapes from 1986-1999 all were fine but when I did mine from 2005 nothing is working. Seemed like the camcorder was ruining them. Wondering if this is the issue.
Thank you for posting this ive had a few of these myself right royal pain! I recently bought a ff and a rr with cleaning, that i have yet to test which was in the hope of fixing this issues with. If you dont mind me asking what are you using to tarpe the two spliced ends with?

Splicing tape although you can use reg tape
how much do you charge for a tape to make it play?
All depends on the severity.
