This is video gold. Thank you for going through all of this and sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you!
I need you opinions the lx 470 and the gx 470 same year which is the better one
Comes down to a matter of opinion. Most people like the LX a little more for the room. The platform isn’t that much different. With GX prices having nearly caught the LX price you may can snag a good deal on an LX
Thank you for sharing your information. This has been incredibly helpful as I begin searching for a GX 470 to kit out for overlanding.
Thank you for pointing out what you feel is important!
Thanks so much for this video i am in love with these cars and looking to buy my first one. Thanks for the tips!
Awesome! Let us know what you find?
Fantastic content....in depth, yet concise. I'm looking for a GX and the information provided here is very useful.
Good luck on the hunt! I have 2 available fixing to start working on them
Glad I found you. Just shopping the auctions around Nashville this week. Patience is going to be a virtue. We're lucky here that the dealers let some nice old cars slide into auction. Hoping to find one soon. Hoping for a clean 7K find. Keep up the good work.
hope you can find one, my auctions are nuts on prices now
This was the most informative video on what to look for when purchasing GX. I appreciate your insight and experience of these vehicles. It definitely helped me tremendously. Thank you, Sir.
Glad it helped!
You rock CrutchField!
Thank you
Considering learning as I go so I can repair these kinds of things myself. I just have no idea what I’m doing! Lol thank you for all the help
No problem. I’m adding videos to the series as I come across things that I have to do to different ones that we have before they get sold. If there is something that you would like to see let me know. I’ll do my best to get it done
Man thanks so much, I just found out about these gx’s and they look awesome
Excellent video, will be using this to check one over I’m looking at soon
Excellent information, you are the best! I’m currently shopping for a first gen GX and I’ll definitely be using your advice during inspection. You’re helping us save money with a bargaining advantage!
Dont know about your flexibility with available GXs in your area. If you have several to look at periodically, I would pass on the "Blizzard White" ones if you can. Thats an automatic $2,500 expense to re-paint. I had no idea...
@@joshmoore6165 I'm looking at a lot of ones. Why avoid the blizzard white? Is it because the paint peels so badly?
Yes, the paint this horrible on those
@@mjbuisse Its beyond bad, and there is nothing you can do but re-paint it. sooner rather than later. And look, if you know someone that does paint, then its not a big deal really. It will just be an unforeseen cost added to the vehicle without any advanced warning by anyone. except me.
Very thorough video. Much appreciated!
Thank you!
Best 20 minutes spent on UA-cam ever, thanks

Great GX470 video! Liked and subscribed!
Good video! Looking to buy one of these.
my stuff gets serviced right in my very own garage, the best, most trustworthy shop I found. thanks for the tour of these, i'm just looking in to them

Great info thanks for upload!
I’m dying to buy one of these thank you for your video
Thank you for watching! Hope you can get one. I’m buying one today to start on a build for someone in NY, let us know if we can help
I had an exhaust manifold leak, so listen for ticking noises as you start it up and back up. I ended up removing the manifold and had it welded where it had cracked, just swapped gaskets but it wasn't easy. I bought mine from an old lady and ended up doing the timing belt and radiator replacement myself. Also did all the fluids and brakes among other item such as lift. Also changed CV axles and lower control arms as units, aftermarket parts are inexpensive. One thing I hate about the GX, it's kinda thirsty. Good luck.
This and the other video are the reasons why I subscribed
Great video bud! Thanks!
tons of info from this video. THX !
Great video. Thanks a lot.
Great video…..you know your stuff. Very helpful. Thank you!
Looked at one today. Thought I didn't know enough about cars to make a hasty decision so I put off signing anything. Found this video and decided I knew nothing. Going in tomorrow feeling much more confident. If everything pans out I'll be driving her home. Thanks for everything and subbed!!

Great inspection. However, you could have added to check the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter for leaks. I bought my gx470 '08 and it had a hissing noise. Ended up being a "patch job" of cementing the catalytic converter to manifold instead of welding it or installing the manifold and catalytic converter as one piece. I had to replace both sides at a cost of $500.00 per side.
Make sure you see timing belt sticker is key too. I worked that into my buying negotiations to have it replaced before I buy. U must change every 90k miles.
Great job, subscribed.
Thank you!
Bro! Thanks so much man.
Good on you for cold starting it. Most video reviews turn it over after they've brought it up to running temp.
Excellent thanks
No problem thanks for watching!
sweet thank you
Thank You. This video alone could save people $2,000. on a GX470
Overall nicely done :)
Very important. Check for Noisy brake booster. I had the brake booster die on me. Lost my brakes and had a high pitch alarm inside the car go off while I was driving. I had to use the hand brake. Expensive job at the dealer. Part is sold on eBay. Did the job myself.
Booster isn’t a bad job, but definitely an important part to know is solid like you said
All good stuff here. Bought my 08 GX with 144,000 on it around late May last year. Had to do CV axles, and a few small details to pass Maryland inspection. Since I have done the Aisin timing and water pump kit with serpentine , as well as a new thermostat and fresh red coolant. Tires I went with 3 peak Destination AT2 from Firestone. Wheels are next. Thinking of getting Mamba M14's in machined silver for my silver GX470.
Checked fluids for anything bad , dipstick was fine, nothing burnt. No Smoke when starting it up. No leaks, Nav , DVD and Mark Levinson system all good. Dash good , leather fine just wear from sliding in and out. No rips. This was about the 7th GX I looked at under 10 grand and in the best shape for the price.
Thinking Old Man Emu lift when the bags fail. Still looking into options on that.
10 grand with 144,000 miles where are you finding these gems? What you just described is $25,000, that’s crazy
@@ImYoutubing247 Nah, I paid a fair price for the fact it didn't have a perfect history. The last owner did his own work and nothing was recorded on it 50,000 miles. But hey, all the basic used car red flags were ok when I checked it out. $25 grand is good FJ Cruiser money. I feel sorry for people that paid double for a GX when they get tired of it in 3 years and can't trade or sell it.
I just found an 08 for 15k with only 1 owner. Underneath looks clean no rust probably kept in the garage... I'm thinking about it.
Not a bad price depending on miles
Awesome video! I am in the market for one.
Would you be able to make a serpentine replacement video? And valve covers?
Just in case we do come across this.

Love these videos. In the process of buying one and this and the previous helped a ton.
Question: When removing the airbag suspension, will it start throwing engine codes? If so, how do you get rid of them?
Should not see engine codes for this and this is how to turn off the lights for the system and the warning light that will show the system is off ua-cam.com/video/PyZAvChLmxg/v-deo.html

I do have a repair shop and dealership and get them from time to time but currently no inventory of them
I've been a fan of your videos, is the GX470 a better vehicle then a GX460? Or the GX460 a good buy also? Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Both are solid. Mixed opinions on either depending on who you ask 😂
Hitches and factory wiring hook ups for power to lights on trailer, keys are expensive get the keys, or you may be visiting the Lexus Dealer.
Yep multiple keys is definitely a good one
woah. thx a lot for that video. NOw we are talking about a real nice video to watch before buying a GX. straight to the point with all the info needed with out to much blablablablabal around it.
Thanks! Yeah I don’t like filler if I can help it ha!
I’m not entertaining enough for that 😂
Was thinking I wanted a Land Cruiser as my next vehicle (but after seeing prices and the tons of miles on them) I am now looking into this model Lexus. I am also in AL.
Good hunting! They’re out there just be patient
A little concerned though that there’s no locking rear diff. Watched one doing some off roading and relying heavily on a winch. 😬
I guess will depend on what all it’s doing I’ve seen them keep up with jeeps pretty well. I locking rear off of an FJ cruiser would be awesome
I may have missed it but also checking the rack and pinion. I looked at one this past week that had the boot clamped down with cheap clamps, passenger side was completely separated from said clamp and leaking like a wet dream, the drivers side was clamped (not well) and leaking. Of course no agreement on the price of what the toyota brand would cost to replace and he wouldn't take much off based on that so I walked. other than that it was perfect BUT i dont like people yanking my chain on what i know i'm about to spend to fix it if purchased. Great video! thanks
No doubt should be a solid vehicle at time of sale

Don't forget about the Toyota White Blizzard Pearl paint pealing issue. (oh, you just mentioned it) I bought mine from a guy that had it partially fixed. I could tell because there was overspray on the mudflaps but he didn't tell me why. The problem was they didn't re-spray all the areas and after a year, the paint blew up along the entire length of the chrome trim along the top of the front doors. Now I have to bring it in and have it re-done. It's not a formal recall so I don't know if it will be covered when I bring it in, like the peeling dashboard issue.
Very unlikely that they will cover it unfortunately. I’m having one repaint it now before it goes out to the customer. An amateur painter had tried to fix it but like you said it didn’t quite do the job
Someone needs to do one of these videos/guides on the GX 460 especially the first ones pre-face changes 2010-2012!

You seem to really take care of the vehicles, before you list them. We def need more intergrity like this. Is that 'Granny Gold' Gx going on your website soon? Because, I have been scouting the market, looking to purchase one...
I've got a silver one on the website. It's for sale, I just need to put the center diff actuator in it. I have a black one that is on the channel, but it's pending sale as I'm working on it. I take custom orders when requested if you wanted things done before sale. I mean how could it actually deteriorate if it was never used I understand it could maybe tighten up from never moving .a person should be able to save it by working on it or tear it down and fix it without buying a new one if they're so expensive? eBay is the best bet I believe they sell a Prado wheel that should swap easily
Not sure on a refurbish
Maybe a dumb question but I’m just now looking into getting a Lexus which will be my first 4x4 vehicle and I’m not 100% about using the high and low and neutral. Are you supposed to be in any certain gear before switching it? Also did you ever figure out what causes that temporary grinding sound when you switch it?
You can put the transmission in neutral to go from hi to lo. You can’t leave the selector in neutral or it just rolls. Sometimes the RPMs are a little high for the gears to line up and you’ll grind a touch.
Man appreciate your honesty

Curious what your thoughts are on 2004 Lexus GX 470 Base 4WD with 187,925 Miles. Maintenance record shows that the timing belt was only changed once at 77,0000 miles. All other maintenance seems to be legitimate. They want $8.999. I'm extremely tempted. I haven't test driven it yet, but plan to this week if the weather cooperates.
Not a bad price, I’ve gotten them for less but it’s not a bad price overall if it’s rust free and all works
One common issue is the evaporator - haven't heard of any heater cores going out but several of us in Texas have had failed evaporators. Also seems rotors tend to warp more than other cars - possibly because folks over torquing lug nuts. Does seems more sensitive to needing really good wheel balance.
I see a TON of folks go until the impact gun is out of uga dugas. Gotta torque those lug nuts correctly 😬

Thank for the video! Do you believe a dealership will go this in depth if I bring it in before purchase?
100% depends on who you’re dealing with. A local dealer just sold one with holes in the frame all they did was slap some wheels on it 😣
I go through them before sale, but not all do
The drive shaft clunk and vibration issues, ClubLexus has been complaining about that since the GX's inception.
Grease the drive shaft....that was the cure for mine.

Its going for 10.5 which I feel is pretty high especially with that year and mileage but the market for them is high. I just bought an 08 for my wife a few weeks ago with 180k on the dash. Paid 12,500 for it. Excellent condition. I also have an 04 with 225,000 on the dash and runs great. The timing belt needs to be done every 90k so it is probably due on the one you are looking at if it was done at 90k. The dealer quoted me $880 and that includes the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, thermostat and housing. I can do most work myself but not that job. otherwise it can get expensive pretty quick as with all suvs with 4×4. Good luck!

I read a lot of comments, and many people asking about good values, etc. Since I'm in the market, I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask... I'm looking at a couple of these from a dealership in Houston. They have heavy overland mods and all maintenance (new timing/water pumps, etc), 3-4" lift kits, converted suspensions, front Iron Man bumper, rear steel bumper, 35" tires, and the list goes on. there is an '04 with 140K miles for 23K and a '06 with 180K for 24K... These are obviously priced waaayyyy over retail, but are they worth it with all of the mods and the maint done? I want to buy one that I don't have to do any work on, but these still seem a little high in price...

I have a lead on a 06 with good miles in gray but I have to run it by another person first that’s been waiting for one. If he passes (he’s wanting sub 150k really) and this one has like 165k I’ll definitely hit you up
There one less than a mile from my house for sale by an owner in my neighborhood. Typical soccer mom owner. The longest drive she's done on it is to the beach and back (3.5-4 hours one way). It has 258,000 miles and she wants $16,000. Said she'd knock off around $550-600 for some of the repairs. She hit her garage so the front is torn. I'd rip that off either way for off-roading. Driver side bottom cushion torn and needs replacement. She had it repainted and it has a small chip on the passenger side. If I was financially able I'd snatch it up for $15,000 in this market, but already have to wait a bit. Was told i could test drive it and that it had been maintained at the local Lexus dealership so records are easy to obtain. So tempted, but I'm maxed on my personal budget and on any credit. 😞
Still seems a bit high if stock and needing some work
Is there any flaw that would be a total deal breaker when inspecting a GX470?
Heavily rusted frame 100%. Surface rust is fixable, but a hole in the frame is no good. A bad head gasket is really expensive so don’t miss out on checking the oil and for any white smoke not associated with cold weather
Nice gx very hard to find a 08-09 for under 20k in California
Getting that way here too
Tell me about it.. I’m just looked up one with stellar maintenance record, but the gear lever seems pretty loose, it keeps going on the 4th when I leave on D.. no rust underneath, but saw a leake in front… I’m not sure if it’s coming from the oil pan.. I drove it and no cel and drives smooth.. asking price is 12500 with 160k.. is it worth it? Subbed on you channel..
$12,500 with 160k isn’t horrible, what year?
The shifter is likely just loose under the cover, so long as it’s shifting normally while held in place.
Now, the leak can be easy or a really bad job depending on what you actually find there
@@crutchfieldautomotive7936 it’s 2006, I also was looking at 2003 another good record except the seller told me that wheel bearing needs to replaced for 12k with 150k miles.. looks like the market is cooling a tad bit coz those vehicle would’ve been gone a couple of months back. I noticing that no one is buying those lately… I’m going to try to negotiable the 06, for maybe 11k. Thanks
What was the muffler that you mentioned? Is there a link?
We used a flowmaster knockoff from my father in law who’s an exhaust guy, I’ll have to see if they’re even available for normal retail
