Are breast implants safe? There are now thousands of women who report having autoimmune symptoms believed due to their silicone breast implants. What does the research say? Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn goes through the studies for and against the concept of breast implant illness (BII) and gives his experience and recommendations. He also reviews possible treatments, including his thoughts on explant, capsulectomy, and en bloc removal of breast implants. It's a balanced and fair commentary on a very controversial topic.

From getting into the breast implant community, I’ve seen that only cancer survivors or people that have a family history/brca mutation are smart enough to know that and smart enough to pay out of pocket for it. Very difficult to find good info out of the boob job crowd cuz there are soooo many superficial bimbos in it. Sorry but it makes sense when you look at the whole picture.

For a plastic surgeon with, of course, a financial interest in this issue (remember, he said breast augmentation was one of the most common procedures he performs), I thought his presentation of information was very fairly balanced. I have watched a number of his videos. Always very impressed by Dr. Youn.

    • @InitialFailure
      @InitialFailure 5 років тому +18

He has a bigger financial interest if he can do more surgeries.
The studies he mentions shows an overwhelming lack of causality between the illnesses and implants. At best there may be some correlative connections.
It's almost as if he wants people to get implants (money for him) and then take them out (more money for him).
Based on this video, there's about as much support for BII as there is for vaccines causing autism.

Sadly, there seems to be every bit as much financially successful option to specialize in lifts and fat transfer with every bit as beautiful outcomes. A win/win for everyone. Saline implants are in a silicon casing in which studies have shown the polymers leach into the system and making a high number of women sick. Whether it's 1,000 or 10,000 or 100,000 or a million women getting sick. Every single ones life is important.

I got implants about a year and a half ago. I did my research then and I’m still doing my research now. And I knew then just like I know now that getting surgery was a risk but every time I looked down at my chest before surgery I knew it was the right choice for that moment and for many moments to come. If my implants made me sick, I would take them out and that still holds true. Ultimately I feel fine, I love my implants. Whatever happens, probably years down the road, happens. My relationship to my body will change and I have to be okay with that (with or without implants). I just thought someone should say that on a video with such one sided comments.

I was sick for 16 years without realizing it was the implants. My liver was overwhelmed and couldnt function at full capacity, so I had issues with digestion. Loose stools, undigested food and fats, yellow/grey eyes and skin, thinning skin, brain fog, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, these are all symptoms of an overwhelmed liver that cannot detox your body. After 15 years, I explanted and it took a year for me to produce a normal bowel movement. Sounds gross, but I am so proud of my turds now as I have not had a solid turd in 16 years. No more swelling, no more stomach pains. Sorry, but my turds do not lie. This simply cannot be placebo effect. I feel the women who believe that their implants do not effect them, do not correlate them with BII symptoms as do their general practitioners. I simply thought and was told I just had IBS and I was to just deal with it with medications. Explanting has given me results with symptoms that I never knew were effecting me because I just learned to live with the side effects. Ignorance is not bliss.

I have a family member who got implants, and after she decided to go bigger she ended up getting sick with what her doctors called an illness that mimicked an autoimmune disease. They tested and tested for everything and tried several different treatments, she just kept getting sicker. She suspected BII and went to place after place looking for a plastic surgeon who would remove her implants. It took over a year just to find a surgeon who would do the explant, but once they were out she started to significantly improve. These days she is doing great. I wish more doctors/surgeons took this seriously.

I'm 28 and have always had a small framed body. My chest is very small, but proportional to my body. I've often mourned the fact that I never grew in to my own idea of what a woman should look like, and thus heavily considered implants. However, I have a lot of food allergies and battled skin problems (acne, eczema, seborrheic dematitis) off and on on my entire life. I KNOW my body would react poorly to foreign objects on my body. I can say that I'm so happy I chose therapy and self acceptance over implants. I know this isn't possible for everyone but I highly encourage women to use surgery as a last resort. I had smooth shell, saline implants for almost 17 years. I just had them out last month. I thought I had done my research even asked about safety of the silicone shell. I went from extremely active, absolutely no health issues to being diagnosed with arthritis 2 years later then a year after that fibromyalgia. I had allergic reactions to shampoos I had used all my life. Fast forward to now...I could literally feel myself dying. I've been diagnosed with leukopenia,RA, liver issues, blood clotting issues that puts me at higher risk for blood clots, low hormones, nonstop sinus infections, the list goes on and on. Of course the brain fog, hair loss, memory issues. The pain throughout my entire body was unimaginable. The moment I woke from surgery I instantly noticed the pain I had for years in my breast was gone. I could breathe better. I could feel my lungs fully expand. My labs from the shell and capsule showed bacteria, culterbacterium acnes, and staphylococcus epidermis.😱
If I would have known half of this information I wouldn't have gotten them. I went back to natural but unfortunately they are smaller then they were before because of tissue that had to be removed and the fact I didnt have alot of tissue to begin with. But I am happy. I'm thankful because I believe we found the problem. I may not fully recover but I will take every bit of good I can get.
I was happy with my implants. They still looked great after having kids. I've seen multiple drs and asked if my implants were the issue. I was told no every time. The two I am most disappointed in was a breast surgeon, another a breast cancer specialist. I was basically laughed at and turned away. One laughed and said it wasnt my implants..I had fibromyalgia in my breast.(I knew it wasnt...it wasnt the same pain). If you have implants and have symptoms please dont write it off. So glad to see you covering this. I am local and hold you and your practice in the highest regard. When I discovered BII and sought treatment there was nobody local to consult (yes I called your office at the time and was told you don’t do that). I can’t speak to specific “studies” (yet) but have encountered MANY women that had only implant removal with capsulevtomy and symptoms did not go away and after found out about en bloc and went back to have the rest of the capsule removed and had immediate and full recovery. The patients were told at their removal surgery that all the capsule was removed but when symptoms continued and more info was being shared they were convinced capsule was left and sure enough it was (documented with video of the surgery).
Also many implants are ruptured and the rupture is undetected and opening the capsule inside the body can of course leak silicone out before removal.
I had en bloc because I believed fully that complete removal of all was important. My scar is not bad at all is in the natural fold of the breast but even if not I would have accepted that for complete removal of that poison from my body. I had immediate results and then continued to improve and finally am back to my normal self (happy to share specifics if interested). I recommend you reach out to dr victor urzola he is an amazing highly skilled surgeon who has basically devoted his career to helping women with bii and knows so much and is the kindest gentlest soul and would love nothing more than to share his experiences with another professional looking to learn more. This is a HUGE problem that is just finally beginning to be recognized and only a handful of surgeons that take it seriously and are skilled enough to do a proper reservation. Dr Feng in Ohio women travel from all over the world to see her and she has a very long waiting list. Dr Chun in Ca and Dr urzola and a few others and I hope you will be added to that list soon!! Also I forgot to mention my capsules and surrounding tissue was sent to pathology and was filled with silicone and I had no rupture so they do deep/leak and those poisons that silicone is made up of is throughout the body.

bella61567 Wow! You just described me! I had saline implants put in in 2003, and had a hematoma right away, with a second operation. I started to have constant pain, had back issues, was diagnosed with RA, fibromyalgia, more autoimmune illnesses, severe brain fog, had to retire from my teaching career, and became bedridden for over a year. I finally learned about this, did a ton of research, found a doctor to do an enbloc removal, and immediately started to get better with a clean diet, clean water and clean air. I’ve been working hard at getting better, and now my symptoms are controllable; however, A LOT of my symptoms immediately went away, though, such as my Sjogren’s Syndrome eye ulcerations, my eyesight improved, my cognitive dysfunction, rashes, hair loss, the constant pain between my shoulder blades, strange blood work, food allergies, and allergies to mold went away. I lost so much because of these implants... my sisters who thought I was on drugs still barely talk to me, I lost relationships with men because I was unreliable, cancelled dates, acted like a recluse because of my chronic pain, or they thought I should go see a counselor or just work through it, my friends never called me for a long time until I began to recover. This is not to mention the huge financial burden of having to pay out of pocket for my explant, a LOT of doctor’s bills, functional medicine and holistic treatments that aren’t covered by insurance. It’s absolutely a crime that I was not informed of the dangers of implants, especially saline, that everyone said were “perfectly safe”, and still did right up until I got my implants out.
This includes the head of plastic surgery at U of M who is a pompous a....!
What came out of my chest was disgusting and looked like slabs of dried up bacon or salami.
I have learned that I shouldn’t have had implants put in because I did have autoimmune symptoms and rheumatic fever as a child, but I had NO IDEA that I had these issues, and only know now because of thinking back and doing research.
I’m also in the area, and wish I had known about Dr. Youn. He’s now my hero!

Surprise! It happens in saline implants, as well. All implants are in a silicone shell. Saline hospital bags even have a shelf life of 2 years because after that, the silicone starts to degrade into the saline. There are many studies done out there, most in other countries because most still don't want to fully concede because breast implants are so lucrative

This just made me tear up. 😢 I’ve lived with so much breast pain over the past 20+ years. My implants are Baker scale IV. my implants were done in 1978. Yes that’s right, they’re over 40 years old. I’m so wishing I could find a surgeon here in Oregon, that believes in BII, takes Medicare & willing to do the complete explant. I’m so hoping Dr. Youn, you could refer me to someone. I live in a small rural town, in southern Oregon. Our nearest airport is an hour and a half away this time of year. I’ve seen one surgeon who was willing to do the explant, but because of where I live, I’m nervous about the surgery.
I didn’t start having an BII symptoms till the early 1980s & the first big hit was hypothyroidism, an autoimmune disease. I didn’t realize at the time, I would’ve been predisposed to it anyway, but multiple symptoms started rearing their ugly heads not long after. I guess my biggest concern & worry over a small town doctor is him not believing me with all the health issues that have occurred since the implants were done.
Please please Dr Youn, help me if you can

If my sources are correct, here's what's in silicon. Remember, the saline implants are in silicon casings and the polymers can leach into the system. Ask yourself, "would I drink from a plastic water bottle that been sitting in the hot car all day?" Or, do you microwave your food in plastic containers? That's a small comparison. Then ask yourself, would I put these ingredients in a syringe and inject myself with it daily: methyl ethyl ketones (neurotoxin), cyclohexanone (neurotoxin), Isopropyl alcohol, Denatured alcohol, acetone (neurotoxin), Urethan, polyvinyl chloride (neurotoxin), Amine, Toluene (neurotoxin/carcinogen), dichloromethane (carcinogen), chloromethane, ethyl acetate (neurotoxin), silicone, sodium fluoride, lead-based solder, formaldehyde, talcum powder, oakite (cleaning solvent), methyl 2-cyanoacrylate, ethylene oxide (carcinogen), xylene (neurotoxin), hexon, 2-hexanone, thixon-OSN-2, stearic acid, Naptha (rubber solvent), phenol (neurotoxin), benzene (carcinogen/neurotoxin), lacquer thinner, epoxy resin, epoxy hardener 10 and 11, printing ink, metal cleaning acid, heavy metals such as aluminum and platinum, silica, link oxide.

I didn't do that yet having every symptom on and off though out the years. The human body doesn't like them. There are new studies out that indicate that they are harmful. When I look at women now with smaller breasts, I think they are beautiful. I didn't have allergies or any auto immune problems prior to surgery. Those developed after implants and they didn't happen right away. When my mother started smoking in the 1940's she thought she was glamorous and that's how I felt about my breast implants when I was young and dumb.

I had a persistently raised white blood count and CRP, which my doctors had ignored. My breasts had grown slowly bigger and by the look of things, were constantly fighting a silent infection. I believe it was this infection that was making me ill and in many cases, this is what BII is.

I was left with memory problems to the point where I had to quit my job. I was left sick and broke. I finally found a doctor in Tijuana Mexico, short walk across the border of San Diego that took them out . Cost me a lot less that what was quoted to me by doctors here in the US. I got severe capsular contracture so a year later that doctor put larger ones in, supposedly to keep the contracture from happening. Well, it still happened. Either way I never ever would have believed in BII at that time. About 15 years later I had them redone under the muscle with the contracture fully removed. Both implants were ruptured btw!! I loved the new implants and they stayed soft with no capsular contracture and looked awesome. But this is when I started having issues, although I would never have attributed any issues at all to my implants. Also, about 7 yrs later, my right implant had bottomed out, which is a term that means the implant started slipping out of the breast pocket and sat lower on my rib cage. Yes, literally sliding down my chest. I went under the knife yet again where the surgeon opened me up to reposition the implant as well as place special permanent sutures to keep it in place. Fun. I then had to wear a sports bra 24/7 from then on. Yes, forever basically. Then in 2018 I had a very good friend explant and I finally woke up to the fact that since I’d done everything I could possibly ever do to keep my body in peak health yet was consistently feeling worse, I knew it had to be these bags of poison. I’m a lifelong health nut and fitness professional who should NOT have been feeling like age 90 at age 52! So at this point, 4 surgeries later and the current implants about 15 yrs old, I knew that they needed to go. Guess what? These too were found to be ruptured upon explant!! Bottom line is that I’m THRILLED to be free of fake, toxic objects in my body and I now feel like I did in my 30’s!! My immune system has healed!! As you can see I have a LOT of experience of my own with implants and I hope that my story will help others make the choice to NOT get implants!!! Be a bad ass and love your boobs as they are!!! Eat healthy and exercise and let your beauty shine through that, NOT fake boobs!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I’ve had silicone implants for 8 years. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s) 2 years ago. That same time I was told I might have a prolactinoma, which later was confirmed after an MRI. I have a handful of other symptoms as well that’s on the typical BII chart. How would I go about finding a doctor to take me seriously about this? I’ve spoken with 2, and they just write off as symptoms due to my other diagnoses.

What about explant and a lift? At the same time? And if a lift is done will be ok to remove the capsule with the implant or separate? What if implant is over the muscle? I’m contemplating removing them my breast implants are over the muscle? I will also like them smaller I’m 32 D or DD depending on bra?

Nothing you showed at all demonstrated in any way a causal relationship between implants and BII let alone that it's real.
Anecdotal testimony, small sample sizes (used in the "BII is real" studies) and very vague correlative connections between BII and implants does not make BII even likely.

You're the type of surgeon every woman needs to see! I am choosing smooth saline implants because of long standing autoimmune disease. The thing to understand with autoimmune disease is it takes years to develop. These studies showing no correlation are too short, and ideally women with implants should be studied for 10 to 20 years. Also, if the implants have been removed after initiating an autoimmune disease, the process is far to complex to be resolved quickly. Women need to heal after autoimmune disease and this is dependent on various biochemical and environmental factors. But it is still absolutely necessary to remove what caused the immune system to attack and dysregulate.
Another point is industry funding. Many studies on breast implants are funded by the manufacturers of implants. And guess what they find? Big food industries are heavily conflicted by their funding and it would be like coca cola showing no negative health effects from drinking coke for 7 years! Implants are foreign to the body and are contained in a women's secondary sex characteristics full of sex hormone receptors. It makes perfect sense why women would develop autoimmunity.

I would love to get breast implants however, but I am certain my body would not have a good reaction to the foreign body. I wish there were some other, more natural options for breast enhancement. The most natural available, currently - I believe, is fat transfer. However the shaping given by an implant can't be given in the same way through this procedure (from what I am told). I am a FORMER owner of silicone breast implants. I became ill about 4yrs after my reconstruction for breast cancer. I was debilitated by flares at least once a month. I had a very painful rash to my trunk. Interestingly the rash spared the area directly on the implants. I would run fevers to 101F. I would feel like I had the flu. As time progressed I began having generalized joint pain and severe brain fog. My lab work corroborated my symptoms with my inflammatory markers going through the roof.
Unfortunately after removal many of my symptoms did not resolve. I became too ill to work and have remained under the care of a Rheumatologist. It was all a very terrifying experience. Today I'm able to do many activities but still experience flares which are like a very bad flu. I know this is on the rare side but women need to be aware that this is a possibility. You believe you've survived breast cancer only to experience this nightmare.

Talk about the implants that have been recalled. Talk about the need to have MRIs every 2-4 years to check for ruptures. Talk about the need for a major surgery to replace the implants every 7-10 years for the rest of your life. Talk about how the capsule contains the toxins that leech out of the implant. Talk about how silicone is found within women's bodies - even within the brain. Talk about how en-bloc removal is key to minimize further spreading of toxins.
