Just so you are aware, eggs last much longer than the best before date. You can keep an eye on them by placing an egg in a glass of water and if it floats to the top it is bad, so don’t eat it. If it sits on the bottom on its side it is very fresh. If it stands up it isn’t as fresh as laying but still totally fine to eat. I have used eggs well past a month of the best before date and they were fine.

It’s possible to add a third of water to the milk and thereby get another full carton.I know it’s not as nutritious but in “stretch’ weeks it can really help.

Long life milk might save you money and is easy to keep on shelf. If you don’t want to drink it use it for cooking. Many people in rural areas solely use this as they are too far from shops. We drink and cook with it.

Love a pantry challenge. And love how you were talking about not getting too far away from the budget or it’s too hard to catch up. Fruit and vege shops often have some good specials. Shopping around is time consuming but worth it if you are on a tighter budget

I’m seeing apple pies with the soft apples! Peel and dice your apples add some honey/maple/vanilla, sauté’ in a pan with a tiny amount of water until apples soften, and sauce is a little thick, put in a baking pan/bowl, rub some butter into some oats, add some cinnamon, and top onto to apples and bake! So easy I do it all the time when our apples are soft! I add any other soft fruit too-pears are always good with the apples! And I also use the apple/pear mixture to top our oats in the morning for breaky!

Just my husband and myself now. Still finding it expensive to buy groceries though. I do the majority of the shop in Aldi. Never had an issue with anything there, always good quality. I also make sure to only by Australian made wherever possible. Then if necessary I go next door to Woolies for a couple of things. It always shocks me to see how expensive W is. BTW eggs last a lot longer than the use by date. Need to be in the fridge though.

There are so many ways to save a lot on food and groceries. I know you love tackling plans and here's one that could come in handy.
Make a list of all the foods (raw/basic) that the family enjoys that are really cheap that you can think of. From there, source different recipes that you can make using them as the major component.
We saved so much when our children were at home by doing this.
For instance, my list would have included rice (in 5/10kg bags that I would repack into serving sizes, pasta, canned tomatoes (we went through heaps), carrots, potatoes, onions (I know you have trouble with these), frozen peas, mince meat (there's a million things to do with this), chicken, fruit & vegies in season and from a cheap grocer, etc.
I have a crock pot (better than a slow cooker) and it is amazing for cooking tough (cheap) pieces of lamb, pork and beef but also makes a whole meal by adding vegies. It can be done in the morning and the only thing you need to do before dinner is to thicken it.
Slow roasts using oven bags are another economical and delicious meal option with very little work required.
I came from a big family which made it so much easier to know how to budget.

The struggle is real with grocery prices at the moment. I have found our local Woolworths has great meat mark downs so I always buy what I can and pop it in the freezer for the next weeks dinners. We are trying to spend $60-$100 per week on food for a couple incl. hosting family dinner night every Sunday.

Thank you for sharing about your social anxiety Rachel! I am exactly the same if I go to shops without my kids to distract me! I walk around in a daze/overwhelmed and take much longer than I should, and feel drained afterwards. I was using doordash to get groceries delivered a lot (to avoid this time and energy drain) until they recently put the prices up, so have started shopping in person again. I don’t have AirPods but I totally get how that would help! ❤
I am in awe of your budgeting skills! I’d love to know how/where you learnt how to budget. I feel like this is one of the “adulting” skills that I completely passed over. 40 years old and I’ve never created a budget. I just fly by the seat of my pants in a lot of my life! 😬 Would love if you could make a step by step video (for dummies) on how you create a budget for a family! I’m a solo parent with 3 kids and know I need to get my act together and would appreciate any advice you could give in regards to budgeting and even flybuys, qantas points etc. You seem to understand and know how to use these things to your advantage and I would love if you could share your knowledge!
There are so many American mum vlogger videos out there on how to save and stretch your money and use different rewards schemes, etc. but no Aussie ones. I really think if you made videos like that giving tips and tricks from an Aussie Mum’s perspective it would extremely beneficial to us Aussie mums ❤ Not just that but any and all tips, advice or step-by-step videos on how you manage and run your household and get everything done. You have a wealth of experience and knowledge that would be so valuable to share, with those of us who haven’t got it all figured out (or even close in my case)! 😅 Thank you ❤

Thank you for your beautiful comment! I’ve just always had a knack for money and budgeting, I don’t really know where it comes from but if it would really be helpful I could figure out how to vlog about it. Don’t worry about not naturally having that skill, I guarantee you have natural abilities that I don’t have! That’s what makes us all unique and special 🥰

    • @mahadewiiii
      @mahadewiiii 8 місяців тому

It would be incredibly helpful and appreciated! ❤ You could even make an entire channel or series on home making/parenting/adulting for dummies (you wouldn’t have to use that as the title!) 😂 I feel like a lot of us go from being taken care of by our parents to being so called “grown ups” with children of our own without being taught many of the important skills to live a successful adult life and just make do and try our best but could be doing so much better if we were shown the best, easiest most efficient ways to do things. Things like: handling finances (budgets, planning, saving up for holidays, rewards programs, etc.), doing housework / tasks in an efficient way, meal planning (to prevent waste - a big struggle), single parent struggles, staying organised with kid’s school activities/forms and extra curricular activities, keeping things fair when it comes to time and money when you have kids of different ages and a blended family, any other tips or skills you can teach.
This is all totally a suggestion, completely understand if you wouldn’t want to or it’s not a viable option but it would honestly be so amazing to learn from a successful mum like you! The fact that you are Aussie and can offer relevant info to us Aussies when it’s few and far between on UA-cam would be amazing! I honestly think you could even make it into a paid subscription/course if you wanted to - that’s how much I value your skills and knowledge! ❤ I’ve been married twice and currently separated from my 2nd husband (my choice), I’m doing my best to get organised and efficient but it doesn’t come easily to me! 😅
      Thanks again ❤

Groceries have become ridiculous. In the last 12 months I have reverted to making as much as I can, even spaghetti sauce. I buy cheap cans of tomato, along with tomato paste, onions, garlic, herbs, chicken stock and a bit of sugar and I make a big enough batch to fill 4 jars, which I have saved. I then freeze the jars. I recently made crumpets and they were yum and so easy. I then wrap them and freeze them along with pancakes, bread rolls, banana bread, muffins, etc. It has allowed us to keep our hard earned money instead of giving it to the greedy supermarket giants. I also shop at Aldi first, then I go to IGA, Cole’s and Woolworths depending on specials.

      Crumpets:
      Recipe from Tasteless Baker
      Ingredients:

      200ml warm of water
      3 g instant dried yeast
      Big pinch of salt
      3 g of baking powder
      Big pinch of sugar
      1. Flour, yeast, salt, warm water and into bowl and mix for 3-5 mins, until the flour is absorbed.
      2. Add baking powder & sugar & mix.
      3. Cover and leave in a warm place to rest for 15 minutes.
      4. Grease pan, use crumpet rings with baking paper inside them.
      5. Heat pan to low heat.
      6. Add mix halfway up the ring.
      7. Once the air holes reach the center (about 5 minutes), flip and cook the other side. It will not need long.

    • @63dkw
      @63dkw 8 місяців тому

@@Sonja... try and buy the crumpet rings, as the egg rings are not tall enough. Just fill them 3/4 of the way. When the top has bubbles and you can see it is cooked up the sides, take off the ring and turn it over. It won’t need much time, as they are nearly cooked. I brush ghee on the pan and I have it on a low heat and they come out fine. Just don’t knock the bubbles out of the mixture.
