    I prefer political fantasy.
Party A: We have a terrific new idea.
Party B: Awesome! Let's hear it!
"Leave the World Behind" sounds pretty interesting.

Ohh Apeirogon is such a brilliant book. It really spoke so strongly for the girls the book is about, two girls from different sides of a conflict. I sometimes think novels can say so much more politically than non fiction. They give more scope to think critically.

This was a really interesting video. I've not read the entire shortlist, but it will take a very good book to beat Vivek Oji, that book is Devine.
Thank you for bringing Afterlife to my attention, that sounds like my type of book.

I love political fiction. To my shame, I still haven't read Orwell. I enjoyed Weather. I adore Ali Smith; The Nickel Boys was underwhelming. The Vanishing Half was good, not great. I'm keen to read Apeirogon, The Death of Vivek Oji .

This is an excellent shortlist. I echo the thought that Vivek Oji is a much stronger novel than Freshwater. I was stunned by it. I loved Summer and the seasonal quartet and want Smith to win lots of awards for the entire series. And Apeirogon is simply a beautiful and very important book. I’d vote for any of those three.

i am looking forward to Leave the world Behind and all the other books recommended. The Vanishing Half is my prediction to win. when I went to Australia one time I took one book - it was the complete works of George Orwell.!!

Colonialism, Genocide and Apartheid is not a "conflict" by both sides. Both sides are not the same in this "conflict".

I’m currently listening to The Vanishing Half on audio. Aperigon is also on the booktube prize long list.
The Death of Vivek Oji was great 👍 on audio. Summer was the weakest of the quartet .

I finished my first Akwaeke Emezi book, her YA book Pet, last night as part of my Pride reading. I loved it. I don’t read much YA at all, but this book had really meaningful themes and great representation. I read a library ebook and liked it so much, I will be picking up a physical copy for my collection. I will definitely be reading The Death of Vivek Oji this summer.
Yikes. I still shudder at the memory of listening to Leave the World Behind. That book completely freaked me out.
    It’s a great shortlist.

I really like this prize and am delighted that you are highlighting it! I have also read three. I hadn’t heard of After Lives which sounds right up my alley! I just loved The Death of Vivek Oji. And I just got a library copy of their next book that just released this week. And yes, I loved Summer- what a great conclusion to that series. I would actually love her to win something for the whole quartet- it was a great collection, weaving so many ideas, topics and feelings.

Thank you! 📚 Yes, I'm glad the prize has brought Gurnah's novel to so many more people's attention.
Maybe there should be a new book prize for a literary series of novels just so Ali Smith can get a prize for them. 😄☀️

Funnily enough, I'm currently re-reading 1984 and I didn't realize that the Orwell Foundation has a book award so thanks for the tip!! Apeirogon and After Lives both seem really interesting and thought provoking :)

Once again you have given me some interesting titles. Perhaps its the way you summerize them that peaks interest but I am writing down some titles. I was confused somewhat as for me I assumed by the title these were books about Politics/Politicians . In a way they are about people/places interactions .I have currently been madly reading quite a few actual books about Politicians which is illuminating to say the least. Great review-thanks Eric.

Ooh, this sounds wonderful, thank you so much for covering it! I'm trying to avoid following another book prize for now, but this sounds like an excellent one, and I love this shortlist!
I hadn't heard of Afterlives but it sounds great! I really struggled with Freshwater too, but got the feeling that they would be an interesting author to watch, so I think you've sold me on Vivek Oji! And of course, always delighted to see some love for Ali Smith. :)

Too bad Apeirogon was given a pass by many left-thinking reviewers based on accusation against the author. It is a remarkable way the novel is presented, totally a unique presentation. The story of a Palestinian and an Israeli unite in a common cause both having had their daughters killed in the long lasting political wars of the West Bank. What with the current situation there attention must be paid to this remarkable, readable page turner. Also it is fitting that it is up for an Orwell award, based on the Orwellian treatment it has received. Please give it a read Eric, and honor a namesake!

you don't need any books on political fiction. The world as it is with covert-19 is fiction enough!
