I don't know if it's because the material was too close to me, but I didn't find this nuanced but lapsed into tropes and cliches. That's not to say they didn't happen that way, but it made for a poor literary experience. I also feel if you're going to have a slow burn, careful unwinding narrative on this theme, you also need the cataclysmic moments interweaving, not just those that lead to people taking a decision to leave their host countries, but also to encapsulate the day to day living with racism in the host population. The whole Labour Party anti-semitism was evidence of this, where no one shouting actually spoke for a single UK Jew, only betraying their own attitudes towards Jews, even those Jews who became embroiled on whichever side, ultimately only spoke to their own experiences.
Ahh, totally fair on that, and I can see what you mean. It gripped me but I can see how you might want more of that on it. (And also agree about how the Labour Party conversation was dominated by those not personally affected by it)
