The idea of diversity is supposed to be about having police officers who can communicate with their own community and also speak English. No-one who cannot read or write English should ever be employed in the police service.
Or anywhere in Britain - an English-speaking nation.
I can't wash dishes where I live without being fluent in the language
And nobody that holds dual passports (MPs, Mayors, Councillors, Police, Civil Service) should ever be employed - conflict of interest.
No the idea of diversity is ensuring that native British people are ruled by non British people
That would have disqualified 90% of police officers, forty years ago. 😂 It was always the thickest lad in the class who became a copper: ‘I wuz proceedin’ dahn ve rowd…’ Bless ‘em. 🙏
I am a retired police officer too (1979-2009) and I rarely tell anyone. I am ashamed of what the police have become and I wonder how ANYONE can deal with legal matters and yet can't read or write!! How could they have ANY idea of the law or uphold it? This really is Alice in Wonderland these days.
I finished 5 years ago and recently had reason to report a crime where I was the victim. It took a day to send me the crime number but it took a week for the OIC to contact me...and that was by a text message! No phone call, no knock on the door, no message left through the door to say that they had called by, not even asked if I was ok! The message did, however tell me about The Victim Code, which I had declined to take a copy of when I reported the incident at the police station, and what his pronouns were! I was incensed and refused to reply. A week went by and then I received another text, yes another friggin text, telling me that if I didn't contact him he couldn't investigate and that the matter would be closed! I made a formal complaint about the appalling lack of service... and it took a week for the Sgt in charge of the OIC to make contact! It was a phone call but it was from the most ineffectual individual that that I have had cause to deal with and out of sheer frustration I almost put the phone down on several occasions. In the end I told him that they had lost any impetus in carrying out any form of investigation and told them that I was no longer going to engage with them and that they would have to write off the crime report with no write up of what action the OIC had taken.
I constantly see things happening as I go about my retired life but I will never have anything to do with the police again. I am utterly ashamed that things have come to this. Some of my old crew mates are still serving, they hate what it has become, but I know they are just hanging on for those few more years before they take their pensions. The job is fucked!

This woman is ignorant. Back in the day there were virtually no graduates in the Police Force. Many people were of the opinion that that the rot actually started with the uneccessary graduate entry. All that was needed was a reasonable standard of education, a fund of common sense - sadly lacking in many graduates - and excellent physical fitness, together with the highly sensible height requirements of the day.
Hmmm.
I conclude that you don’t have a degree, poppet.
Am I wrong?
When the Police are more likely to attend an instance of 'hurty words', than a burglary, you know there's a serious problem and that's just a small part of the issues we face. The Police need to understand that they're there to uphold the law, regardless of who they are facing and that the law is written, not made up as they go along to suit their minds or agendas.
Go woke go broke apparently also applies to UK police.
When budgets are cut, the standards drop.
Who cut the numbers of police officers?
Fast tracking of Senior police officers is the root cause. I retired over 20 years ago and it was a problem then, a problem which has multiplied ten fold recently.
I take your point but the police need a proportion of intelligent officers. That goes for every large organisation.
The problem has always been that they’ve tended to recruit the ‘fast-trackers’ from the thickest graduates.
Maybe, the police should increase the ‘starting salaries’ of, say, superintendents and above in order to attract the brighter elements?
When I graduated in 1983, I started on £13,000. Using the ‘beer token scale’ that’d be equivalent to £130-140,000 at today’s prices.
There is NO WAY that I’d have joined the police on the paltry salary that they offered to graduates at that time. Additionally, from memory, one had to do a year or two ‘on the beat’.
That was silly. It was an incentive only to thugs who wanted to beat folk up legally. Hence Orgreave.
There WERE good people who had the vocation, of course. In the late 80s, I used to play rugby against Paul Ackford who was an inspector at the time. He MEANT to serve the public. Great bloke. Dean Richards was ok, too. But he got out of the police as soon as Rugby Union became professional. Money.
But they were the good guys. More typical were the likes of PC Wade Dooley… He’d be the first person to term himself a thick thug.
The police service has to become a little more creative with its salary structure, really.

Was it not a few moths ago that the Chief of Firemen sorry not sure official title was a Nigerian man and he claimed to have played for Charlton athletic and to have a Masters or some degree and they gave him more money than the prime minister for a salary. Ended up being a scam. As do 90% of scenarios with Nigerians. It's been afew days since I got an E-mail from the Nigerian Prince maybe it's because he lives in England now.
They have solved that with direct entry political policing now. Just another example of managed decline of public services.

Do you need a University degree to be a Police Officer? A squady who has a clean record and can learn the basics of law and KNOWS when to get advice on the rules, AND can scare the C**p out of a thug and if it becomes physical can hold his own. That is what we need! Juveniles who are scared of a local police officer will not do crime and if their parents will make them suffer if they are brought home by a police officer after a minor infaction will learn quickly!
In my humble opinion, I think many service people were able to join the Police Service would suffer less PTSD! As the routine and disciple would give then an environment that they are familiar with, but less regimented.
Ex military are NOT wanted in today’s police. Ex military are frowned upon and deemed too heavy handed. Straight forward types who take no nonsense are ‘too brutal’ in the eyes of the home office.
There is an element of truth in what you say.
I’m from a military family which has done a lot of fighting ‘n’ dying for our country since Napoleonic times.
I’m a big fan of our NCOs. Clever, efficient, practical, unflappable. They run the show. We simply couldn’t manage without ‘em.
My family has never reached high rank, really, with the exception of my great-uncle during WW1. But, then again, he had the advantage of rapid promotion on account of his superiors being shot/eviscerated on a regular basis. He ended up as a Lieutenant-Colonel within the Lahore Division (Indian Army). And then he got gassed and had his left leg blown off. Lovely bloke, he described how his (Indian) NCOs held it all together when all the (British) officers went down.
But NCOs are so for a reason. They would make great coppers. Equally, regular ‘squaddies’ remain ‘squaddies’ for a reason. They would not make good coppers.

As I progressed mainly in CID postings my policing ability increased and I became a most efficient officer but it took time and trying by my more experienced colleagues. I was successful in dealing with major criminals, murderers, rapists, major drug dealers and career burglars.

I was so proud to be in the Job, but i see officers now, who resemble laundry bags with human heads attached, they are that scruffy, and who are gutless and just stand by and let it happen, as thats the best way to stay in the job and not get in trouble. I know the cliche, in my day. But in my day, anyone demonstrating outside someones private residence would have been in the cells as quick as they tiny feet would have carried them. We, like nursing, treated the Job as a vocation, and very few failed to make it to the 30 year mark and retire. Theresa May and David Cameron, sounded the death knell of the British police with their cuts to budgets, wages and pensions, and Mays refusal to accept any advice on policing. She was a disaster as home secretary and PM.
@@steptay indeed they do mate.
Approximately 20 years ago policing as disciplined vocation started adopting business practices and concepts. Sergeants became supervisors. Inspectors became line managers. As discipline internally eroded so 'the job' took on a new weakened guise where you challenge everyting, spend a disproportionate time learning human rights so that there was no time nor importance placed on learning and using police craft to catch baddies...what the public want. Police now dont know what theyre about...protecting the public (impartially) and catching crims.
Shocking indictment - we do not want a police force that represents the population - 3 million of them support terrorists - we want a police force to represent British values and if that is still a question we better agree on the answer damn quick
Life experience with common sense always brings the best leaders. Most police now are so fat walking the beat would be difficult. Also is it me, but everything that has to be turned into diversity turn's to crap.
Absolute state of the UK 😂
I find it very strange that we keep seeing retired ex Police being interviewed, telling everything that is wrong with the Police today, but not one single, serving oficer saying the same thing. Where has it all gone so wrong ?
The clowns they are hiring today think everything is hunky-dory.
.
they darent
"but not one single, serving oficer saying the same thing. Where has it all gone so wrong ?"
they are smart enough to not risk their pension...
The people of this nation have been betrayed 🤬
Mass migration, ECHR, Ellwood. About time that politicians started taking responsibility for the impact of their own actions to support the influx - all be it that the police should act to stop intimidation and be allowed to by the CPS even in his case..
Just another example of the continuous decline in this once fine country !!
absolutely astounding that this been allowed to happen
As an ex Met Police officer I totally agree with this gentleman! I am ashamed of the police service today !
I was vetted to DV, served 11 years in the armed forces, trained on both UK and foreign weapons systems and they told me not to attend a recruitment day. I wasn’t female, gay or from an ethnic minority. They deserve what they get, they recruited them.
Recruiting Police leaders froim overseas ? ....... that's not something that's worked particularly welll in other spheres of public life, think of the Bank of England. I wonder how the lack of knowledge about Britain and it's way of life that's so absent in the junior ranks would be improved by having those in authority in the same, or possible an even worse, state of ignorance. You can bet your bottom dollar we wouldn't get some straight talking US Sheriff recruited either ...... we'd get some nanby-pamby panty-waist who'd appeal to the sorts on the appointment panel.
For years you have been able to access a police exam pass online, for a small sum.
Years before that they allowed criminals in, after they stopped employing ex servicemen and outsourced recruitment to IBM, the Capita etc.
IBM??
How are those "illiterate" police officers suppose to deal with the indigenous population? It's disgraceful. When policing is about tick in the box then all is lost😢
I listened to this interview and remember it was only a few years ago front line experienced officers were being made redundant. Now we have an inexperienced police force which the experienced criminals who don,t make themselves redundant just run rings around the newbie police. It just as wrong as any diverse or racist policy to not have an age policy. A huge amount of knowledge and understanding of the criminal mind was "let go" with that police redundancy programme and i am not an ex policeman just an ordinary citizen making an observation.
When I worked in a minor injury unit we had an issue where we phoned the police. An experienced Sgt and a ethnic minority police man turned up. The ethnic was frightened of his own shadow. The Sgt let him take control until he lost control and the SGT stepped in and took control. He looked at me and said he is our token and he can't cope.
Reap what you sow
Yes sir!
When they bowed before a lie, I was done. Shocking and sickening.
What's diverse got to do with anything it should be merit that's paramount
"Most people would support diversity in the police force". I highly doubt that.
Look, all that matters is that the right boxes are ticked! Then those box tickers start selecting recruits of their own, and they wouldn't want to be shown up by anybody that was actually competent or had "old fashioned" values! Police used to patrol a beat alone and on foot. Now because they have so many women and small people they have to patrol in pairs and generally in a vehicle and thereby at least doubling the cost of policing.
The Woke culture started many years ago with the policy of recruiting ethnic backgrounds because we must have the right numbers based on what. Second the fast track of University graduate officers made up the manager roles with very little or no front line knowledge. Third the dress code beards earrings for men and display tattoos. Standards have been allowed to fall and you get what it is front of us today Don't get me started of mouthpiece Sue Bravecareer politician!
Add that to the physical fitness required. Perfect…couldn’t make it up
This didn't happen overnight, it's taken about 20 years - He was in part responsible for where we are now, it's happened on his watch, talk about gas lighting.
I’m surprised the police haven’t arrested them already. Tobias Ellwood and his family I mean.
Indeed,
Must be painful having a biased toe , hopefully it will get better.
@williamcarrington61 Bias directed to what party exactly ?
@@francescostello1377 Good one!
How come when British indigenous people protest about something, the riot shields, batons and tear gas come out?
Does anyone remember the documentary on the Channel four about the Royal mail a few years ago, where in London a lot of the people they employed were agency staff who couldn't speak English or read English, how can they read addresses then?
Tories gutted the police and this is the result….pathetic! 🤬
That's if socialist blame your lots actions on others...its unelected facist socialist beaurocrats doing this, like EU remaining types
Theresa May. The most incompetent and destructive PM (& Home Secretary) the U.K. has ever had.
When ever you have a failing institution, the go to is more money.
This detracts from accountability/ leadership. More funding for a failed institution should be a alarm to us, not a cry for help. Humans become more efficient with less.
To ruin a system, cut the budgets and experienced staff.
Austerity caused it.
The police are experts when it comes to catching motorists
Maybe it's because it's easy money lol
Recruit from the armed forces, those who have done their time in the forces would be ideal for the police and prison officers.
