Thank you so much Renee and Blessings to you and all of my fellow RV'ers!
Ive lived in my Fleetwood Eagle, 1993 analog, since 2012. That's 10 years. Replaced the crap reefer by removing a chair and put in a REAL reefer. Old crap reefer is pots n pans storage, cat food, dog food, sealed supplies. Also replaced the hot water propane BS with a electric water heater .. ran my own plug to water closet. Heat is a worksite blower using propane .. 90 degrees in 3.5 minutes, lasts about 3 hours then starts dropping fast. My diesel genset runs it all with hardly any reliance on propane. But since Im ranch security .. horses .. there is no rent, and am on shore power n water. Its very nice.
Thanks so much, found the tabs in my fridge when we recently purchased our new RV and had no idea how to use them! This was a perfect explanation!
Actually the latches are supposed to lock into notches in the frame and hold the door open, and also keep it from swinging further open in case the RV is moved. Push the door nearly to the latched position and then start pushing on the hold open latches, and slowly work the door in and out till they catch. What Rene is showing you is not the correct way to use the latches, though that way certainly will keep the door from closing. Looking down the comments I see that Scott, Patrick and one or two others also have noted this.
This is a Norcold refrigerator. We had the Dometic brand in our other RV's. I did not know about the tabs. Thanks for the tip!
Actually those tabs can be used to lock the door closed but you can also lock the door open without letting the doors flop about. if you open the door slightly about 1/2 inch you can lock the door so its cracked and will still let air circulate but if your moving your trailer or coach your doors wont be flying open and closed.
I did not know that. I will have to check our RV out. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you for sharing this 😊
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
HA I just got up from the couch and checked and yup mine has it too!
I just hang a dish towel over the door(s) between the seal during storage. Works great! 😊
good tip,thanks.
When I bought my new travel trailer 3 years ago, the dealer provided customer training to demonstrate all the features of the travel trailer, including the "lock-open" latches on the refrigerator and freezer doors. The RV tech showed me the same incorrect method as Rene demonstrates in this video. As posted in several comments, the correct method is to use the lock-open latch to align with the slot in the frame of the refrigerator. The doors won't swing open (out of control) when properly latched in the lock-open mode. Thank you to all the commenters that taught me how to use the lock-open feature properly after 3 years of doing it wrong. It was a problem that always bothered me. Now I am a happy camper. ☺
those little pegs actually insert into the sidewall of the fridge... That way they stay cracked open and don't swing open in trailer wide open, or accidentally close on you either... It keeps it in the correct position.
Mam you totally rock
I wish I knew this a little sooner. I've been paying a little person to stand in my RV in the off season holding the door open. That's pretty expensive, especially compared to this quick and easy solution. I wonder if that little guy knew this all along. Welp, live n learn.
what. the hell
We just take the fridge out each season. I put it in my office at work. Getting it through the slide-window is sometimes a challenge, but they're cheap enough to just change a couple times each year.
Another example of technology taking away jobs...
Poor poor lil guy... 😢😭
She's so smart !!
Thank you. Did not know that!
gracias rene, 👍
Very helpful
I also have the same type refrigerator, and also what was not mentioned is that those same tabs are to secure the doors in the closed position while you travel. That's just my 2 cents. RV Safe Out There. Great video as well :)
I have no idea how I got to this part of You Tube. I was watching Ukrainian Singers and boom I'm here. I am now going surfing through RV videos. If they're all as entertaining as this one, I'm in. Propping open a door!!! Gotta love it!
good tip,, did not know that
Good to know!
and they sell clips to do the same thing, lol I just drap a piece of cordage over the doors, keeps them open and gives the mice something to climb up in the winter. cool idea anyway (pun intended of course) you have a pretty smile ;)
Thank you
Sweet!
Thank you, we did not know that.
I hear Dana Carvey's Johnny Carson saying: "I did not know that. That's weird, wild stuff!" :P
Wild stuff.
my piece broke, and I've ordered another one. any utubes on how to install the assembly?
Thanks
Thanks god bless
I have blue add tabs that are slid into the door and then you close the door and they latch in . Allowing the door too be open but locked so the door dosnt fly open on it own.
We have owned our 5th wheel 15 years and honestly don't know. Thanks for sharing and dang are we dumb sometimes.
Cool beans
How do you remove door awning from 2007 holiday rambler
I figured that you were gonna show 🤗,by the way norcold is the only one who has this feature, some body on this electronic world needs to explain to the people, and there are a lot that does not know how to use high humidity switch
Additionally, depending on the refrigerator, those pegs fit into a couple of holes on the door jamb. Putting the pins in the holes allows you to drive with the fridge open and the doors won't swing.
Thank You !!! :o)
Those taps actually lock into the door jam, locking the door open and secure for travel.
thank you you seem so normal I bet you have a date already the last video was the fit rv and I feel out of sorts cya
Not all manufactures use the same approach. If you have the little locks, don’t open them with the door open like in the video as you will break them off. There is a catch on the door for them to sit in and leave enough of a gap to allow air to circulate.
What brand of fridge is this?
Clever girl.
Not on current Dometic. 2019.
Here's a better tip, if you can leave the RV plugged in and the refer on A/C power while in storage. Most refers in RV's if left on 24/7 will last 15 to 20 years. if left to sit unpowered for 60 days or more a year. The ammonia and acid that cools it separates and the acid eats through the tubing in the cold pack in about 3 to 5 years and you get to buy a 1200 to 1700 dollar refer to replace it.
Thank god I made them put in a Nova Kool... No fires and draw about 2 amps/hour.
I just drilled a bunch of holes in my door it worked
Why you do dat?
Amazon sells a perforated door for your fridge. Just the thing if you like curdled milk and your beer on the warm side...
Rene' ... the comments below are priceless !
Yeah, I was gonna leave a "priceless comment" of my own and then I spotted the wedding ring at 0:20... oops!
Wow
Thought they were “deadbolts” to ensure no accidental opening while traveling.
This tip is a secondary use I guess
I was long as you take that pack of chicken out of there before you do that your fine. 😂
Its a Norcold, AKA Firestarter or RV burner,
Wish mine had that!!! It's not one of the "features" of my R/V fridge.
OK. So they're intended by the manufacturer to lock the door closed. But they work very well exactly the way Renee showed. I'd call it a "feature." ;)
Nice tip, those RV refrigerators can get nasty after not using them for a while!
Unfortunate but you are wrong, there is a notch just inside the lip for those to lock into. Just thought you should know.
Five years of full-timing and I only discover this now?!
my Travel Trailer must be cheap, I checked and don't have those fancy things
You can also put newspaper in your fridge and freezer and close it tight. You will have no mildew when you open it.
Norb,
Maybe your RV has such a floor plan, but certainly not all do. So, for many RVers, if not most, your method is NOT "that simple," as you suggest.
And here I was thinking they were to lock the door closed while I drive up the trail to our camping spot
And then there's old Norb. He's going to solve this propping open the door issue once and for all based on his absurd. ridiculous, assumption that all RVs have the bathroom door right next to the refrigerator. Brilliant!!!!
paused it right away let's see if I'm right. It's capable of holding ur neighbors HEAD along with some Salmon... now ima watch and see if I'm right.
Damn was I wrong
The music at the beginning is so depressing.
and here I thought it was my wifes cooking that smelled bad.
why would a "do-gooder" be rummaging through your property? I think the proper term would be "crime-doer". Anyone caught in or on my property is gonna get backhanded staight back to before refrigerators were even invented.
And even idiots can pay for what they broke if they did manage to break it
Here is a good tip from a retired RV tech, Don't turn off your fridge.... store it someplace where you have power and leave the fridge on A/C power. RV fridge's have acid in the cold packs and when they are turned off the acid separates from the other chemicals in the cold packs and settles. And it starts to eat the metal in the cold pack till it eats through. Left on it'll last 15 to 20 years. Turned off every year you'll be lucky to get 5 years out of them. And at $1000 each U do the math.
