Very informative, I remember many years ago in shop class training in a lathe and the importance of the handle was not mentioned rather the tool rest being close to project . The handle length makes total sense now 😊 great video keep them coming. 👍

Hey Ashley, I want to let you and your viewers know that I ordered your ventilator system from your website a few months ago. It has turned out to be one of the best investments I have ever made in tools. As an asthma sufferer, I have to be very careful about inhaling sawdust and all the other hazards in the wood shop. This is allowing me to continue in the craft that I love. The ventilator does a fantastic job, very well made and I want to recommend it to anyone who is shopping ventilators. New viewer. I had never seen that style of handle before. I had always seen and used the old wooden handles. I am not an active woodworker, it has been decades since I did any wood lathe work. I like learning new things. Thanks for the videos.

Ashley, thanks for the information, I only wish I had seen this prior to investing in tools. Now I want to replace my wooden handle tools with various length handles. Christmas is coming.
So helpful, as usual. I have a condition called Dupuytren's Contracture in my left hand. The push cut method Ashley uses is something I would love to learn. Maybe someday I can take a class or attend one of her workshops. I would never have guessed that she has a condition in her hands that makes her sensitive to vibration. I love the option of removing handles to sharpen tools, as well as being able to change handles so easily. Thank you for being willing to share with other turners.

After taking your class I am slowing switching most tools over to the SB handles. Easiest way to sharpen without the handle. The handle system is worth every penny and I am sorry I did not do it sooner. Plus it makes it easy to travel.
Looking into turning bowls bought a bowl gouge and bowl scraper been watching your videos and Stuart’s videos to learn how to turn a bowl before I try it thanks
Ashley, thank you for all the great content and lessons. Just getting back into turning mostly duck calls, but going to try my hand at some bowls. I have Raynaud's disease and is a challenge, maybe build a warming table for your tools and protect those hands! 🤲

Nice video Ashley. I too sometimes struggle with hand pain from arthritis after a life time of playing sports. One thing you may find helpful is the use of a tennis racquet over-lay grip. Sold for tennis racquets, these are just long thin strips of rubber that players can easily and quickly put over their existing racquet handles. Occasionally I'll use them with my turning handles when my hands are bothering me. They provide just the slightest bit of cushion but also allow me a keen grip with very little pressure. Just a thought for you to keep in mind down the road...cheers.
I purchased a gouge and handle from you a few months ago. For me sharpening is easier without the handle, especially when learning the 40/40 grind freehand. One of my other bowl gouges i converted to the 40/40 grind has a typical, but long wood handle and i seem to always lift it off of the rest no matter how far up the tool my hands are, the long wood handle is cumbersome and gets in the way.

Ashley, do all types of chisel points (skew's or whatever) fit in the handles, or just the gouges?
What model of lathe do you use? Thanks for the videos.
I am interested in what height your lathe spindle is and think a "measurement above elbow" could help some of use to gauge where we should set up our lathes.

I have these handles that i ordered from her and they are so convenient, you only really need one of each length you use and they make sharpening simple! I love mine!

Ashley, on your website, the shortest handles available are 12", and in the video, you have a couple that are seriously short. A lot of stuff I make is kind of small, and short handles work for me in certain situations. It would be nice to have your interchangeable system, as it appears to work very well, and can save a lot of space. Are handles available that are shorter than 12"?

I'm a pen turner who has just bought a skew chisel which I'm going to be making a custom handle for. I've got a couple of different 12" spindle blanks for it and I was wondering if there was a specific wood I had to use or wether its just about the looks?
I go for a fine straight grain wood for tool handles. Holly, cherry, ash all make great handles and are available to me. The fine straight grain means that the handle is less likely to split in the region near there the tool tang enters the handle. If it’s your first time turning a tool handle, practice on some scrap wood, try turning different shaped handles to see which you like. Making handles for old tools, files, rasps, screwdrivers, etc, as well as turning tools can be very rewarding.😀🇬🇧
@@filmbluff99 just out of interest, how long would you say a skew chisel handle has to be?
It's 20mm wide.

I'm only 16 and I started turning earlier this year. Now I've started selling slimline pens on Facebook to some family and friends.
Once again, never fail to learn from your videos Ashley. In my ignorance, I assumed that a heavy handle would have been better, when in reality, all it is, is heavier. - Also the first time that I have been through ALL of the equipment links below, got a good laugh out of, "video editor/food"

The one other issue with handles is the cold. Aluminum handles are light, low vibration, but incredibly cold through the winter, if your shop isn’t kept at room temperature all the time. Curious on the carbon fibre?
Yes ,metal handles at 35 below is no fun I find i can get away with a glove on a wood handle , the hand holding the shank on tool rest needs a mitt

Ashley, there are all sorts of wraps for tennis rackets that would be great for those handles. You will get the feel without as much vibration. Go to a 'real' tennis shop or talk with a tennis coach!!
