    Great review! Wish Tri-Ace had a bigger budget from SE to work with on this title since most of its (few) shortcomings seem to be matters of budget (with the exception of the font size). But i think this is still one of their best games they have ever made.

    I loved the game and the characters. Definitely one of my favorite releases this year and one of the best in the series.
    Also there is an option in the game settings to turn on the text for the NPCs so you actually understand what they said.

    I am loving this!!! You raise good points - the performance on PC is badly optimized and stutters as much on 720p as 4K, even after compiling shaders, but seems to vary a lot from system to system. NPCs that talk are so quiet you can't hear them over anything else. And it really needs a New Game+ since there's so much to collect and 2 runs to do. But honestly... aside from that, every single other part of the game is fun and it just FEELS like Star Ocean to me. And the skyboxes and art design are terrific... there seemed to be almost as many towns as traversal areas (FFXIII could've learned something from this) and each of them is just beautiful in its own way. Snow covered mountains, the sea and clouds, the moons and nebula hanging over every scene. I'm only about 50% of the way through but it's right up there with my favorites. So glad to see SO back and GOOD!

    • @captainthunderbolt7541
      @captainthunderbolt7541 2 роки тому +1

      That would probably be because of a shader caching issue with Unreal Engine 4. The issue could be completely eliminated through a one-time shader compilation process at the start of the game, but for whatever reason barely any developers take this option, and are instead left with stuttery, broken-feeling games.

    • @Taikaru
      @Taikaru 2 роки тому +1

      @@captainthunderbolt7541 Well, they actually run a shader compile at the beginning, and include an option to redo in the graphics menu which makes it a lot better, but not perfect. However people on the forums are saying it's Tri-Ace's own ASKA engine, rather than Unreal... so not sure of the details.

    • @captainthunderbolt7541
      @captainthunderbolt7541 2 роки тому +1

      @@Taikaru I just googled what engine the game uses, and the first result was UE4. Because of that I just assumed that it was using UE4.
      Everyone is saying that it uses ASKA though, and they also point out that if it used UE4, then they would have to mention it on the start-up screen, which is a fair point.
      I don't really know what to make from this competing information.

    I think I still prefer SO4's combat, but this is definitely the most well rounded game in the series since SO2. There are definitely some issues, but the game retains a good level of quality in every area that counts. I am really hoping this game does well and we can get an SO7, I was ready to give up on Tri-Ace after how bad SO5 turned out, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

    • @HellFireRPGs
      @HellFireRPGs  2 роки тому

      SO4s combat was easily the second best for me. I didn't like that some of the bosses had a tiny window for damage, though. This is definitely a step in the right direction. Have you heard anything on sales? Hopefully it makes some cash.

    • @DanielSantosAnalysis
      @DanielSantosAnalysis 2 роки тому

      @@HellFireRPGs While I get that some bosses are annoying, I think SO4 had better core mechanics. SO6 I think is fun when the combat is fast and you're just hammering away at trash mobs, but starts to falter when you need to do something that requires any sort of finesse or real technique. The only thing I could find about sales, is that in its first week it seemed to be doing well enough, but I dunno if the game is considered a success or not, probably too early to tell.

    Is this worth it? I want a new RPG to play. Beat Tales of Arise most recently. I'm trying to get back into like, The Witcher 3 and I just can't wade through the game like I could years back. Wanted to grab Crisis Core Reunion but, that doesn't feel like it's worth full price when it's essentially a PSP game. Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins looked kinda decent. I'm having such difficulty getting into games anymore, it's a shame. I don't even understand why. Lately games feel like, clunky and rushed for the most part.

    Laeticia's voice was perfect for the princess role, since you asked. Really appreciate the fact that you played the other games in the series and understand the mechanics. Something happened after star ocean 4 where the character design is total trash. I know you don't mind it, but Nina pissed me off at "age 14" with those ridiculous tits and Elana's tits just flat despite trying to be big. Same with SO5. Also Nina just being a healer is weaksauce. I loved Switching to Reimi in SO4 because her design was great and she could Jump and attack building a distance, essentially being a good healer. I can't stand the character designs and it keeps me from using them in battle. Raymond's hair and his unnatural body builder body is only second to Mida's 37 year old's gray hair and even bigger body builder physique. Then Mariel shows up with that North Pole cold outfit that she can't even move her arms. I can suffer through the doll-like faces and lack of facial expressions, and even the arm movements which suck, but top it off with that terrible design and it's hard to stare at them. The series game play and story scratches that sci-fi JRPG itch, the music is some of the best, but they need to fire that designer.

    I enjoyed TDF but I really can’t comprehend it being one of the best in the series. Worst FPS issues and only one where FPS is actually an issue. Menu management. Empty world without meaningful exploration. Worst optional character set up, you get 1 optional character per playthrough. Most basic IC, no specialties, no Super Specialties, the most basic IC fields and hardest to progress through without wasting limited SP. No amusement town, no battle arena.

    • @HellFireRPGs
      @HellFireRPGs  2 роки тому

      I liked is so much because I felt it had the best story, the best characters, the best gameplay, and the best exploration (even if there was room for improvement here). Most of the boxes were ticked for me.

    • @shaifs5072
      @shaifs5072 2 роки тому

      @@HellFireRPGs Sorry if this sounds mean. If you say TDF is your favorite SO, then I wouldn't bat an eye. Tastes vary as much as personalities do. But speaking objectively as the quality being the best of SO, I find that statement absurd. Best cast is completely subjective so I won't acknowledge it.
      The story came across as typical Star Ocean storytelling however there is nothing happening in the first half. With this handicap I don't see why it's the best. I could accept the writing in TDF, is an improvement of passed games.
      Best gameplay is the biggest question mark. I'd take best combat without question and that's pretty much it. Es'owa is fun but it becomes stale, with it becoming a power game quickly. IC is not only the most vanilla but it is also the grindiest. No Bunny Races, no Cooking Master, no Chess, no Battle Arena, no Fortune Teller/Oracle to give you fun flare about your relationships levels. Absolutely minimum optional characters which you are limited to 1 per playthrough and not until the very end of the game. Unlike earlier games where you can go on a small adventure with Cyuss and recuit him and miss out on others or skip him so you can Ashlay or Phia and have character specific adventures with them. Do you get Precis or Bowman, Ashton or Opera and if you get Opera do you get Ernest? Then there is the replayability of it all.
      As for best exploration, I am confused as well. The chests are all generic items you can get elsewhere, nothing unique. The only unique thing to find is D.U.M.A. crystals and the extremely rare enemy which after the first you will go through most of the game before you get another. The map is on rails, it's like FFXIII but in a sandbox. You go from Point A to Point B. There may be a Point C exit, but it's blocked until you unlock that part of the story which then becomes the new Point A. In older games there were completely optional areas and I dont mean post-game dungeons. Who you have in your party would take you to different parts of a dungeon/map.
      Then there is the detractors. Last half of the game is poorly optimized, causing FPS to massively dip. Memory Cache quickly maxes, making it so you have to reboot your console or play the game like an emulator when your machine clearly does not have enough power to run. Dialogue banter that prevents you from doing anything. I'd be okay with dialogue blocking almost all actions the first time but when going back and hearing it again, preventing me from scanning, using the map, pulling up the menu is egregious. Target lock only lasts until you kill the enemy and doesnt pop back up until you find a new enemy. Inability to modify the minimap, so many times you cant even see where enemies are in battle since the minimap covers such a small space. Infinite loading screens and poor loading times also exist. These aren't minor issues.
      I loved TDF, it's my 4th favorite SO game. But dear god did I want to throttle this game so many times. And I rarely get frustrated in games.

  • @Trent957
    @Trent957 2 роки тому

    Honestly, SO6 kinda left me feeling a bit.....empty. Main game was interesting enough, tho I don't think it stuck the landing with its "villain", he was just kinda one note compared to the rest of the cast. The other big reason that left me feeling empty was IC and the post game. IC just has WAAAY too much potential and not enough post game to justify its potential. When I took down 6W Ethereal Queen the first time, my reaction was literally "That's it?". Compared against SO3 and 4, with its post games I had to put IC to its absolute limits and full mastery of their respective combat systems for Freya and 4s 6W EQ.
    I still had lots of fun with what I did get, but its going to be at odds with SO4 in my book as far as which one I like more and I daresay I might have to play SO4 again to get that answer. SO4 and SO6 are essentially both playing for 3rd place with SO3 and SO2 firmly sitting at #1 and #2. SO4's issue is that I really despise a good chunk of its characters, its WAAY too anime trope and Lymle can get tossed into a dumpster, but its overarching plot did feel like it had some stakes and its post game while infuriating at times (Wandering Dungeon just needed save points) was still overall fun and decently meaty alongside a fun combat system imo. SO6 is almost the opposite: Loved its characters, but its plot didn't seem anywhere near as urgent, especially on the back half of the game and its post game felt anemic

    but yeah... ENGLISH Laticia... she sounds more robotic than the actual robo -waifu. Weird.
    And yes, the font is TERRIBLY small. Tiny sometimes. Draw distance was okay for me.
    Music choices were very bad at some scenes of the plot, or some maps, killing my immersion. Invisible walls were just sad...
    Combat was pretty cool tho, even for someone like me who mainly just brute forced it.
    But yeah the target system? Managing Accessories? Picking Items mid-Battle? Bad! XD

Run through a slightly open area and collect shiny objects then to a town then to a field with shiny objects then to a cave then a field with shiny objects then a city. Its the same formula. That being said, I like this but like all the other games including the new FF game it feels the same after you get like 25% into it.
