@@wodson1 that’s because he’s jumping around and going crazy, you can’t have it both ways. If he stood in one place he would have sounded fine. By the time they reunited later on his voice was totally shot and it was too little too late. Also Wolfgang just isn’t the bassist Mike Anthony was and the show was trash.

Huge opening! Made my skin crawl. Who had more fun than those guys? Who projected themselves on stage like that? On that level? Ever? No one. No one can touch these guys.
I saw this concert when it came through Denver in June of 1984. When they played Unchained to open, the crowd was so loud that I couldn't figure out what song they were playing.
Yeah they were loud and I couldn't recognize the song they started till I hear Mike "CHAINED...UNCHAINED!" I was like HOLY SHIT. Back in the day when everyone could stand on their chairs on the floor section
Eddie is one of the top 5 greatest guitarist who has ever lived in rock and roll. But don't forget that his brother is a one of the greatest drummers ever also. I can only imagine what Mrs. Van Halen was feeding those boys when they were growing up.
I've watched this video at least 10 or 15 times and I still cannot get over how fucking cool it is when Ed shreds that opening riff and then Dave jumps down the stage. Gives me goosebumps every time.
I'm a 61 year old guitarist and I remember hearing first VH tune while jamming with friends and thought about giving it up. I was fortunate enough to help unload their semi trucks for a Diver Down show in Green Bay, WI. I still get pumped when I hear these guys!!
This band actually saved 'rock' at that point. Obviously there is no new 'talent' that can even compare to VH / Dave. We'd settle for decent clones in their early 20's age wise to maintain the American tradition of true rock music ????
Exactly as exciting as I remember it. Saw them in NYC and NJ, back to back on this tour.Every night, too. Could not miss a show. Man, I miss these good old "daze" of music. This band got everyone truly excited at their performances, Listen to the crowd here. Every show was like that. Rock and roll. 78-84 r.i.p.
van Halen were God's back then look at that stage...!!!! No 0ne cared the song was being played a beat or 2 faster than recorded ... And Roth did not even sing half the song Anthony did..
@Russ Graziano + Roths role (as usual) on the opening song was to be the lead guy bouncing around and being a bit crazy to bring up some more energy from the crowd like he did so well. Not many lyrics for him to be missed in anyway as it's mostly the chorus that sung.. And yeah, the pace was a bit fast to say the least.. Ahh yes. The 80's.. I remember part of the 80's kinda well, but cruising Sunset and hitting the Clubs back then will do that to a person's memory!! LOL.. ;)
My son's first time to them was 2008. 3 days earlier he saw the Foo Fighters in the same venue and he couldn't believe how I paid 2.5 times more per ticket than for him and his buddies. Then he saw how many more people showed up for the "old guys". I tell him he should have them in their prime before he was born, then he would have a real appreciation for the mighty Van Halen!
I can see that until DLR starts trying to sing, and then it's all over. His outfits, prancing around, and sad attempts to sing are insults to the studio versions that are/were so good. Like Vince Neil, he should have taken MAS voice lessons, and given VH fans what they deserved, which was better live vocals than this. EVH/AVH/DLR should be thanking God every night that Michael Anthony was there to save them live (vocally). Without MA, I can't even imagine how bad these performances would be.
I’m so glad I grew up with VH and saw them in that era and Sammy , shows will NEVER be at that magnitude or intensity again , that’s why they were the MIGHTY Van Halen 🤘🏻
Wow, people have gotten spoiled with tech in this generation. People here need to remember that VH bavck then was in a total differant generation, no computers to inhance the voice. Truthfully, I so Van Halen with DLR live 3 times. My first concert was for there first album, yea I am old, all of 51 now. And if you saay you where at any of there early concerts, you mostly remeber the power, fun times and enrgy from there shows. That's about all you remember the wasn't only ones totaly stoned. Like I said, late 70's early 80's was a VERY differant time. So give them a break about how you hear them now hhere online in a digatal age from a recording made in analog time. I remember that they rocked and so did Van Halen with Sammy.
David D You still young lol I'm 43 and you've been very fortunate to see VH live back in the days, sometimes i feel like i was born on the wrong side of the continent at the right time, luckely saw them during 1993 with Sammy and almost with Gary but the gig was canceled lolNow i can die,i saw Eddie in the felsh! Hello from France :)
David D imagine being 18 going to a concert today where a 'popstar' just lipsincs in her panties. They aren't even aware that all they are watching is a strip show. They are not even aware. total brainwashing today
+David D Yeah, I totally agree. I'm almost 49 years old and it was a different time.....pre-cell phones, computers, digital enhancement. Just straight sound and amplification back in those days. You had to have talent and really work for it. Van Halen was huge back then. Their concerts were a total event. You had to be in the arena to really appreciate the sound and the vibe....this recording doesn't do it justice. I saw this tour 1984, and Unchained was the opening song. At least I can say I saw Eddie so many times in his prime....although he still plays fantastic today. The whole band just rocked the house!
+Dean Bonns OH! YEAH MAN ALL the new MUSIC HAS ALL THAT BUT NONE OF Them could come close to The Greatest Rock Band and The Greatest Guitarist EDWARD VAN HALEN I went to the CONCERT on that tour AND ALL their other tours even there 2010 and on the 2012 tour's AND WAITING For A Return
Dave was so into himself that he had no idea where he was in the song......CHANGE !..." I have no idea what the ...CHANGE !...."Can we stop now??...CHANGE !
I'm guessing this is recorded on VHS. That means someone took the trouble of carrying one of those big honkin' shoulder mount video cameras into the venue to do so. A big THANK YOU for who ever did!!!!
This truly brings a smile to my face. Diamond Dave was incredible, Ed, outstanding as always, Mike and Alex...Perfect. Love the backround vocals. To be young again.....:)
Right. Faster. VH would not have had to play faster for audience excitement. In the '80's I went to three VH concerts with DLR as the lead, and all three concerts were not good performances. Plus DLR was always a jerk to the audience and hardly sang with his band. He was egomania victim. I don't care how people consider my comment: DLR was/is a flop live. And in interviews he portrays himself as an oaf. But the studio sound of VH with DLR is world class rock and roll, and VH is the best rock guitarist in my opinion. I could give a hoot what Aussies and Brits believe and say.
There you go, KnightOwl2006. That was my disappointment with DLR; he was full non-sense in front of a camera/crowd. Always drunk or high. In hindsight I would never go again to his concerts despite how friends pressured me.
I was 14 and my second concert was the 1984 VH tour....insanely awesome. I still have my VH necklace I bought at the show and still wear it on certain occasions! Can't wait for the new album and tour!

DAVID LEE ROTH is the greatest front man that ever lived! He is a human explosion. The opening hit is not just guitar, not just an accent, ITS AN ACROBATIC M80///LISTEN to the crowd when he flies. Listen to the chicks when he kicks. Hes a rock n roll GOD. Dare i say he eclipses the amazing kick ass band. i see why evh hated him/
Holy Fuck where the hell is the concert footage of this mind blowing concert .I mean this the The Mighty Van Halen on overdrive .This should be pro shot on DVD .Fuck !!!!
I was at the Winnipeg show of this 1984 tour, and the old Winnipeg Arena got to record decibel levels as Van Halen opened with UNCHAINED for their set. Awesome show! The only OTHER memory that really stuck in my head almost 40 years later about this day and the next: my first and LAST time drinking rum!!

Michael Anthony was the secret weapon of this band. Listen to those vocals, my god
I agree whole-heartedly
Most definitely. His vocals put them a cut above.
With out a doubt that signature back up's and at the top of their game of the fab four
The other secret weapon was their drummer. Guitarist was OK too.
I totally agree. His vocals kill it

I'm a 61 year old guitarist and I remember hearing first VH tune while jamming with friends and thought about giving it up. I was fortunate enough to help unload their semi trucks for a Diver Down show in Green Bay, WI. I still get pumped when I hear these guys!!
we need this kind of rock and roll back, right now
Then make one.
erowens games Working on it
Good. Hopefully we see you in headlines soon. Best of luck to you.
Cheers ;D
Dave was the most entertaining lead singer. Van Halen back in their prime was as good as it gets!
How can anyone give Van Halen a thumbs down!???
Wooooow! One of the best Van Halen videos I have seen!
This band actually saved 'rock' at that point. Obviously there is no new 'talent' that can even compare to VH / Dave.
We'd settle for decent clones in their early 20's age wise to maintain the American tradition of true rock music ????
Kudos to whoever filmed this it takes a lot of clever Planning to sneak in a recording device
A roller coaster of various tempos brought to you by the wonders of pharmaceutical chemistry.
God bless the 80's
I was 14 when I got to see these concert at the old Richfield Coliseum! What a night!!
Greatest band to ever walk the planet.
Diamond Dave = best frontman EVER !
Greatest Van Halen song. It is a nonstop party. Best party music of all time. Pure joy! No love just booth music!
It’s my all time favorite song of any Van Halen era.
Damn They were ripping through this song that night! Lol love it .RIP Eddie!
Way fast. Probably a mix of adrenaline and a pound of coke. ;-) It was the era.
Now thats how you start a show!
This is just pure raw brilliance
Holy Alex and the coke influenced tempo lol
Eddie started the song and thus chose the tempo ;-)
The video was sped up lol
Alex58924 17 nope coke
@@Lkrona how much you wanna bet that the alex you replied to was Alex VanHalen just trying to cover it up
van Halen were God's back then look at that stage...!!!!
LOL.. ;)
One of the most powerful concert openings ever!!
The pick slide at 2:30 alone makes Edward the King EDIT there's another one at 3:42 beyond perfect
That's how you start a fuckin show!!
WOW! What an intro!
Fast as hell!.....Love it!....Thanks!...
Best. Show. Opening. Ever.
WonkaVator72 u dont go out much do ya? Best opening? Late bloomer
WonkaVator72 guess you've never seen KISS
If we're talking VH I prefer Romeo's Delight.
I love how he thought Roth was going to sing with him.. but instead got high pitched screamed at
I’m so glad I grew up with VH and saw them in that era and Sammy , shows will NEVER be at that magnitude or intensity again , that’s why they were the MIGHTY Van Halen 🤘🏻
I saw the 1984 concert at the Boise Minidome. Unforgettable!
Can Halen tuckin aa
Only if i can go back in time & re-live the 80's again.
Rock & Roll's national anthem.
Alex beating the skins like animal from the muppets
+Tony C. that's EXACTLY what he looks like. Always thought he was the coolest drummer that way
Funniest shit I've read!!!! Thank you!!
This was really nice of God to say the words "I give you, Van Halen "
Still missing you Eddie.
This truly brings a smile to my face. Diamond Dave was incredible, Ed, outstanding as always, Mike and Alex...Perfect. Love the backround vocals. To be young again.....:)
Anyone ever been to a concert? Live is always faster, generates more excitement.
Right.
But they do, all bands do. I mean the OP is a video of them playing fast. HAHAHA!
Ya,he had his moments,if not entire concerts, however, I do believe his best period was post VH.
Yes. I saw Van Halen live at Madison Square Garden in 1981. VH was good but Dave talked too much between songs.
There you go, KnightOwl2006. That was my disappointment with DLR; he was full non-sense in front of a camera/crowd. Always drunk or high. In hindsight I would never go again to his concerts despite how friends pressured me.
I saw that tour. I'd kill to have seen 1980, but alas, I was too young and dumb to know about them..
Doug Steele Guitar I saw the Women and Children tour in Lubbock Texas. I was 14. I have a couple of pic from a Kodak Instamatic camera
I remember driving 4 hours to see VH on this tour, and what an incredible opening song that was for the set. One of the best rock tours ever!
I was 14 and my second concert was the 1984 VH tour....insanely awesome. I still have my VH necklace I bought at the show and still wear it on certain occasions! Can't wait for the new album and tour!
Van Halen would have never gotten out of the garage if not for Roth's showmanship and vocals. He was an amazing frontman.
Lol, yeah. Like Eddie's guitar playing would never have been noticed without DLR. Seriously?
I cannot get there from here, baby
And I don't care where I'm goin'
Here's to your thin red line
I'm stepping over
Thought you'd never miss me
'Til I got a Fat City address
Non-stop talker, what a rocker!
Blue eyed murder in a size 5 dress
Change, nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah you hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah you hit the ground running
No, I don't ask for permission
This is my chance to fly
Maybe enough ain't enough for you
But it's my turn to try
Thought you'd never miss me
'Til I got a Fat City address
Non-stop talker, what a rocker!
Blue-eyed murder in a side-swiped dress
Change, nothing stays the same
Unchained, and ya hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
Change, nothing stays the same
Unchained, and ya hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
Take a look at this!
Hey, man, that suit is you!
You'll get some leg tonight for sure!
Tell us how you do!
(Come on, Dave, give me a break.)
Hey, hey, hey, hey, one break coming up!
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
Change, and nothing stays the same
Unchained, yeah ya hit the ground running
welcome back DAVE !!!! bring us new energy in our life !!!!!!!!!
That maybe the greatest start to any concert ever!
Dare i say he eclipses the amazing kick ass band. i see why evh hated him/
Born 81. I never got to see them, but definitely would've wanted to see them with David Lee Roth 100%
I had to go back and listen to the entrance. I'm surprised the roof didn't cave in!!!
How about them fucking speakers! I bet you could hear that concert for miles!!!
Plus them are 80's speakers. They don't make em like they use to! JAMMIN
David Lee Roth gives EVH his respect as well.
Holy Fuck where the hell is the concert footage of this mind blowing concert .I mean this the The Mighty Van Halen on overdrive .This should be pro shot on DVD .Fuck !!!!
The best Van Halen song.
