I just ordered this for my Omega Seamaster Black Ceremic/Titanium. I think this is going to look amazing. I was so happy to see that they offered the 21mm size.
I love Artem straps I have the classic 20mm in blue and black . Love them and they are worth the money specially if you swap the strap between a few watches
The whole concept of a deployant clasp is worth a discussion in and of itself lol. Spending bracelet money on a sailcloth strap - even with a deployant clasp - is the conversation we should be having. I've tried many sailcloth straps and they do have an elevating effect on nearly any watch (especially if they're actually waterproof, as originally intended). However the durability can be suspect (particularly the lower cost ones) and ultimately they should be an inexpensive alternative to a high quality leather strap. I'm unconvinced.
And I thought I was being extravagant buying a $50 leather strap for a $200 Seiko! But, although I have no experience with high, (or low), end sailcloth, I agree that a better strap almost always makes a watch look and feel better. The strap may not be the reason that the watch is useful....but it is a large part of the watch wearing experience.
As with all hobbies, there's no roof when talking about expenses. I am far from rich, even from wealthy and my daily driver watch is a $700 watch, but when it comes to straps, for me a $50 strap is just OK. My best strap is an authentic WWII piece of canvas turned to a custom strap by a skillful craftsman. it cost $150 and it's not the most expensive I've seen!
Several months back I purchased the Artem sailcloth, I am very impressed with the quality. Previous sailcloth straps I've owned begin to fray at the buckle holes in just weeks. The Artem is a bit stiff at first but nicely forms with watch and wrist in time. Mine still looks like new. I wish they would have let me choose which buckle I wanted. The strap came with stainless buckle so I purchased the black PVD separately (looks really good). I will be buying a blue version as soon as they offer a 22-23 mm.
My experience with my Artem sailcloth strap has been great. I have no hesitation putting it on my US$150 Citizen diver. It makes the watch look more premium and after the break-in period it is one of my most comfortable straps. I move the strap, which has quick-release spring bars, between several of my budget watches and therefore the strap cost is shared amongst them. It even dresses up my Seiko Speedtimer SSC813P. If you want a quality look and feel then you have to pay for it. A $15 strap on a $150 watch makes the whole package look cheap. A $75 strap on a $150 watch lifts the whole package to a new level IMO.
Good to know! I just bought my SSC813P as well and am considering getting an Artem sailcloth strap as well. Which version do you have? I am thinking the all black, but curious if you went different color stitching. And did you go fancy spring clasp or one of the standard buckles?
I gotta find something better for my Citizen Promaster (Unite Blue) I don’t like the strap it came with. Sounds squeaky, is too stiff, and makes the watch look cheap and tacky.
Dave- Thanks for the great review! Due to your initial review I have the Artem strap and never regretted it! My Lunar Pilot and Marvin M119 also live on Artem straps- they really are great straps and elevate the look! Tank you for taking the time to do the video on their new offerings! Cheers!
A Breitling Navitimer I couldn’t justify made me want a strap like these. Another reviewer had an Orient Mako on one, and I love that. It’s a cool way to elevate a watch you really enjoy.
I have an artem with loops for my seamaster 300m and absolutely love it! Quality is insane and the durability and very importantly the customer service is top notch
I too have never been impressed with low cost sailcloth straps. Especially those without hole reinforcement. These straps look like they are worth trying. Good vid. Keep at it!
I bought this black sailcloth strap and spring deployant clasp before I found a watch to put it on and eventually got a Seiko spring drive with a high quality leather strap but the Artem looks better, hope they continue to make them well into the future as I would get the same strap again.
Excellent video Dave. Apart from an Omega on a bracelet, all my watches are in the affordable bracket including a number of Seiko's and other divers for my diving hobby. I never really thought about buying luxury watch straps. I bought my first one last week from a Turkish maker who is extremely well known amongst luxury watch owners for watch boxes and watch trunks that cost up to $10,000, and watch winders for an eye watering $20,000!. But they have beautiful hand made leather straps for $130 to $200. So I got one at $159 for a green dial Seiko Presage and it truly makes a watch feel like a million bucks. I really like the look of these sailcloth straps too. I can now understand the difference between high quality and so many normal run of the mill straps. A good strap can make any watch look and feel great.
I do have one Artem sailcloth and it’s definitely the highest quality I have (sailcloth wise) but I have to say I actually prefer the Hadley Roma corduras that I have. The break in period is a day if that, I find them to be more comfortable, the colors although limited look great and they only cost $20-$30. I can’t stand the way deployment buckles feel either but to each their own. It is a very very good looking strap though.
I think that high en straps really elevate more inexpensive watches and is totally worth it. The axios you showcased looked fantastic with it and sometimes I think it’s better to get good straps than buy more watches. I’ve been collecting for a while and have slowly started selling and giving away watches because I tend to gravitate towards 3 or 4 all the time. Think about it this way. You can buy an inexpensive suit. But if the overall quality of the cloth is good and it’s fitted properly all you need to look like s million bucks would be a great pair of shoes, tie, and belt all of which are much less expensive than the suit
They’re also basically the only company making a sailcloth strap with a deployant clasp (I know, I looked EVERYWHERE to find one). I ended up with a Zuludiver from WatchGecko for about £10 and it’s breaking in nicely.
It IS a clean look, but be aware there is an associated thickness, too. When on, you have the thickness of the tail if the watch, topped with the fold-over of the deployant which is all sandwiched under the thickness of the main strap. That's a lot of thickness. You'll notice it more and more the thinner your wrist is. You may say, "Yeah, but on a conventional deployant you have those three layers, too." Yes and no. While you do have three layers, they are not all between the strap and your wrist. The conventional stack goes deployant, main strap, and tail, keeping that excess on the OUTSIDE of the system.
I saw a Blanc Pain in a local buy and sell yesterday 12k ouch!! But after seeing your Squale I now see the similarities in an attainable watch. Love that Squale and that Artem strap looked great on it.
I see Artem stepped up. When I bought my original Artem strap a couple years ago, it was no good for my sub-7" wrist (unless I added holes, which I felt I shouldn't have to do for such a pricey strap). I got the deployant clasp, too, which made the fit even worse for my small wrist. Even worse, at the time Artem did not allow returns. Fast forward to now, and I see the straps are slightly shorter to accommodate more wrists, and they actually have a return policy. Well done, Artem. That said, $200 for the loop-less by the time you get the clasp, which you need to buy if you aren't putting the strap on a watch that already has a deployant clasp you can swap over? Yikes. I still have the previously purchased strap (being that, you know, I couldn't return it), so maybe I'll add some holes in that (lol, I still haven't), and get on with it.
Got a classic black for my Railmaster and love it. I think the straps are worth it. But there deployant clasps is something you could do without. I got one of the RM versions and prefer just the regula tang buckle.
@@JusttheWatch You'd think there would definitely be a market for one that's above your basic $20 one, but below the > $100 Artem straps. But I haven't seen any others when I went looking. I know there was Mr. Sailcloth but those looked similar to the Ritchie ones to me. I think Rios1931 makes some "engineered" straps that look kinda like sailcloth, but no clue if they are the same thing or not.
@@JusttheWatch Here's a small list... First, most "sailcloth" straps are actually other materials made to look like a sailcoth weave. These usually include PVC, leather and nylon. Even Artem states that their straps are "Synthetic upper material and leather underside coated with a layer of natural rubber." Those I've tried... Mr. Sailcloth Straps [$40] have traditionally been embossed PVC. They look nice, but mine required a crazy long break-in period and still never felt supple. They now claim to make the new ones from fabric. Geckota/Zuludiver [£28.00] makes a similar (still PVC) strap that are a little more supple than Mr. Sailcloth. I've had a good experience with these on an Omega Seamaster. Brady Straps [$34.95] embosses leather to look like sailcloth. I wear one on a Stowa Marine Classic for its appearance. They have a Nubuck lining, though. While comfortable, I wouldn't classify them as infinitely waterproof. The are also very bolstered, making it a little more difficult to develop a uniform curve to the strap (especially nearest the lugs). Barton sailcloth straps [$25.75] are really nylon. Like Brady Straps, they have a leather lining. They're comfortable, but not the most robust of those I've tried. Others I have yet to try: MiLTAT (Strapcode) sailcloth straps [$48.99] are also nylon rather than PVC. As they lack a leather lining, I imagine these would be much more waterproof than the Brady or Barton straps as a result. WatchBandit sailcloth straps [40 €, though some are on sale for 20 €] are also a nylon weave. They admit that their straps start out stiff but say they break in nicely. I can't speak to that yet. MKS Straps [£19.95] doesn't state their material. However, you can check out Average Bros full review ua-cam.com/video/jrRDDsJyeMk/v-deo.html to learn more about them.
At my ad the omega deployant alone is 500 and another 200 for the rubber strap. I was looking to get it to change up the look of my smp 300 diver that I bought on the bracelet. I think this design is based off the seamaster line. Not sure it's the speedmaster pro line as the few I have I all purchased on the stainless steel bracelet. The deployant is very similar I think to what is on the aqua terra rubber models. Can't say for sure though as my aqua terra again I purchased on bracelet. Either way compared to Omega pricing I'd say it's very fair, even if you get 20% off on Omega accessories.
I'm waiting to get my Artem strap that I ordered. It seems to be stuck in US Customs.😕 I ordered the original sailcloth strap and the RM style clasp. My intention is to put it on the same model Bulova Lunar Pilot you showed. The new Omega style straps look really great. I'd order one if they came in XL. Currently, Artem only sell their original straps in longer lengths.
Hey Dave, I hope you are well. I would love to give one of these Artem sailcloth straps a try, but at that price I'm not sure I could bring myself to buy one. A massive part of the fun of watch collecting for me is playing with strap changes, but in this case it's a big investment without actually experiencing the comfort level on the wrist before purchase.
Dave, Love the straps. Just curious, what is the reference of the Squale watch you had on the strap? (No date with Arabics at the 3, 6, 9 and 12.) I couldn't find it on the Squale website, but it looks great.
Artem makes the best sailcloths out there hands down. But all the clasps they offer - including the RM style spring loaded clasp - can be found on AliExpress for less than $20. Basically identical.
The Artem deployant has sharp edges that create hot spots. I just got a 21mm strap and deployant and after a few hours wearing I have an indentation on my wrist from the deployant and it's uncomfortable. I may try to smooth it out. Kinda not happy.
Correct me if i'm wrong but all these so called sailcloth straps are actually made of some sort of embossed synthetic leather like material. It's not actually a "cloth" otherwise, once you punch holes in it the edges start fraying.
So when the extra material slips under the strap thats called loop less? Trying to find a less expensive alternative to this, or just this style of clasp and im having trouble finding them
This has been my exact dilemma. I bought a couple Phylida Speedmaster homage watches that came on a sailcloth style strap for $171 US dollars. I don't like the straps so I have been looking for a replacement. This strap would be perfect but would cost more than the watch. This is a tough decision.
I won't lie -- I like the look of Artem's sailcloth straps (both of them), and I get it is a luxury strap which means a "luxury price"...but I just don't understand how it is justified vs the cost of manufacturing it. It's not like it is a natural resource and they might have to waste tons to get the perfect piece/cut as it is engineered. So although I understand it, it still bugs me that the price is probably 90% inflation on these.
I noticed some sailcloth straps are leather-lined. Does the leather lining tarnish when hit with moisture? I want sailcloth for the waterproof aspect, but I feel the leather-lining would negate going with Sailcloth.
1:15 I have to disagree Dave. Barton's sailcloth strap has impressed me for it's durability. I have one on my daily (Orient Mako II USA) and I am not gentle on it. It's held up quite well for a budget strap.
I own n old golden JLC Futurematic from my father. After having it back from repair I learned that a decent croc strap for this thing will cost me some 350 $...............bummer. I guess the blue sail cloth strap will be perfect for the 1963 !? Just a bit costly.
The buckle is really nice, the strap is top quality, but I do not like that piece of leather on the buckle holes. And I have one question. It's obvious that this strap is made to be sold along with this deployant clasp, since there are no keepers. If you buy it without the clasp and you intend to use a common buckle, well, you won't have keepers. So, since there are no keepers and using a buckle is not a very viable option, what are these holes used for?
Another nice review, great info, 👍Given! I understand they are geared towards luxury watches but IMHO many luxury watches that look good matched with quality sailcloth straps either come with those straps or are offered as an add-on/option from the manufacturer. Why pay so much extra for an "after market" strap when you can get an OEM for the same additional cost. I've experienced both cheap and expensive clasp like those being offered here ... the higher price for the Artem is NOT justified. The product is over priced.
I put an Artem sailcloth on a $90 Pulsar diver and let me tell you… it makes the watch look vvvvv expensive and out of all my watches it’s the one people comment on the most and make jokes about being too fancy for a basic dinner etc. I bought the strap in 2021 so it was cheaper than the current versions but I’d still fork out the $200 now to do it again because it lifts the watch and makes it look like a $1000 watch. Watch snobs brains also get confused by it squinting across the table trying to work it out 😂.
It’s not made of real sailcloth. It’s embossed synthetic material to look like sailcloth. Their explanation is because real sailcloth is rough and not very comfortable on the wrist, they did this to make the strap more comfortable. I got a blue one yesterday and I love it. ❤ It’s very comfortable on the wrist, excellent alternative to leather, nato, or other single layer molded rubber straps. The clasps isn’t very well finished but for the price I think it’s pretty good. Let’s just hope it’s durable.😊
That price is absolutely unjustified. They are not even that great; they look thinnish…. “It´s really fun to use?”. Is that what fun has fallen down to these days?
That's very cool! I actually make some very slim (2mm) completely buckle-free straps that you might like called the Toolbee Wrist Boa. I had some delays due to a back injury but I should have all my backlog of orders done soon and I'd be happy to send you some straps over after that. I'll also have a steel version in the future but I've not had the time for that project yet.
They look well worth the outlay . what I'd seek to know is if they have colour variations?... Do they Dave?. Good review mate & yes it suits all the watches you tried it on.
Now you have to spend $200 more just to get free shipping. That’s nuts. Most companies offer free shipping for over $50. Plus, this is only a watchband.
This really seems to get the Bulova to the next level. Always found it difficult to find the right strap while I owned a Lunar Pilot, to counterbalance it's top-heaviness.
Looks like a top quality strap, but I personally can't justify owning one, when none of my watches are worth more than £1000. But I guess if you're a luxury watch user, then this company should be the way to go.
As soon as there's a small size to go with the 'standard' size I'm all over it. Loved the quality and design but it was unfortunately too large for my wrist even on the smallest pinhole.
I don't like this material. It frays over time, it's stiffer than I would like it to be and it looks better in pictures than in real life. Hard pass at this price.

One of the reasons it looks so good on that dress watch is when that watch came out (the original Cartier Tank), it was a sports watch :)

Margin (or mark-up), not inflation.
I agree. It's sailcloth. It's a sailcloth strap. Why in the world are these so expensive? The markup is bonkers.
How does these compared to the sailcloth from iwantastrap or mksnatostraps?
I just have a problem with finding a comfortable watch strap for an 8" wrist so what ever I get is lucky if it last very long.
I have this clasp on my Hamilton, where to buy the clasp like this with one part of the strap goes under the other?
Anyone know if this will fit a 6.5 inch wrist on a speedmaster professional?
I noticed some sailcloth straps are leather-lined. Does the leather lining tarnish when hit with moisture? I want sailcloth for the waterproof aspect, but I feel the leather-lining would negate going with Sailcloth.
Yeah, that's one of the big problems with cheaper priced sailcloth straps. The leather lining isn't water proof.
@@JusttheWatch I should’ve watched the whole video before asking this question. You directly addressed it in the second half! Thank you!
Anyone have a link, to a European distributor ?🙏🏻
1:15 I have to disagree Dave. Barton's sailcloth strap has impressed me for it's durability. I have one on my daily (Orient Mako II USA) and I am not gentle on it. It's held up quite well for a budget strap.
Does it have leather on the inside?
I own n old golden JLC Futurematic from my father. After having it back from repair I learned that a decent croc strap for this thing will cost me some 350 $...............bummer. I guess the blue sail cloth strap will be perfect for the 1963 !? Just a bit costly.
Love a sailcloth strap, really dislike deployant clasps on straps tho - just find them uncomfortable. Shame.
Cheers Dave 👍🏻👍🏻
They have the classic line without the deployant clasp
@@RobertOrtiz1015 yes, I've got one, very nice. Thanks for your comment Robert 👍🏻
Same here, they feel weird on my wrist and I’m not particularly fond of how they look either.
There's a peg on the deployant clasp that locks into the holes to secure it in the right position.
Great review!
Nice review of a nice strap, but Artem have a VERY limited colour choice of black or blue.
nice job!
The strap is great but my clasp broke in less than 24 hours and customer service is not good
That price is absolutely unjustified.
Hell yeah!
They look well worth the outlay .
what I'd seek to know is if they have colour variations?... Do they Dave?. Good review mate & yes it suits all the watches you tried it on.
They have a few different options for stitching, and on the original one I think they have navy blue.
Speaking of affordability and full blown utility...check out citizen cb0225-14e. These sailcloths reminded me of this watch.
I just want to find a watch that fits my manly 8" wrists. all the after market straps just say fists most people.
Wow, that is a pretty steep price... it looks good though. But I think I'll be sticking to the cheapies :)
Heck, i like my $20 sport strap on my $1000 MM200 Seiko. I think I'm gonna have to pass on these.... Thanks for the vid
Do you know a website or app that give you information of any watch when you put in basic information such as the watches features?
It’s like the guys with the 20 year old beater Honda Civics - and $4,000 rims….
Wow this strap and buckle cost more than my watch LOL
Just Buy a Pagani Sea Master with Deployant . And Buy Their Strap.
Drink every time he says “sailcloth strap”…
…see you all in Hell, lol. I’ll be behind the bar!
(Bah! No orange!)
Way too thick at the clasp
That's a $256 CAD strap... I'll stick to my $100 CAD Erika's Originals straps.
... which are equally ridiculous priced.
I don't like this material. It frays over time, it's stiffer than I would like it to be and it looks better in pictures than in real life. Hard pass at this price.
