The Art of FIXING other people’s Art

  • I've noticed since 2019, there's been a trend of "fixing "people's art" but not in a fun way, in a derogatory way. There's a whole subset for it now. A lot of it tends to be in light of certain cute or attractive female characters or anime coming to mainstream USA. Hmm. Here are my thoughts on the whole thing.

Ever notice that nobody has a problem with buff guy characters with skin-tight clothing and a bulge in the crotch?
But draw or depict a female character as sexy, large bosom, shapely ass, etc, and everyone goes bat-shit crazy, saying: *"MISOGYNY!!!",* *"SEXISM!!!",* *"MALE GAZE!!!"* and all that other happy-horse-shit.

Trust me in some way, the fight for equality has drawn a thicker line between the genders, more than erasing it.
I love a sexy strong woman character, over a male one any day.
Her strength doesn't come from her sex appeal but from her actual strength and confidence.
      Anime "Ara Ara" 😊😏

It sometimes feels like it also comes from a place of jealousy/entitlement - like because the artist drew something/someone they can’t replicate irl they try to “fix it” so that it more replicates them because their jealous of what the art “represents”.
It also comes from another place of “hey you didn’t draw it the way I like it/ it doesn’t represent ME so you drew it wrong”. So yeah entitlement

"Stop depicting women as unrealistic idealised sexy versions of women. Draw women of all shapes and sizes!"
    "But I like this size."
"YOU CAN'T. You should like all sizes but this one."
Like, should sexy women in real life feel bad or ashamed about the way they look or something?

I've had people tell me that certain characters (always female for some reason) are "unrealistic", nobody has [choose something] like that in real life. I've been able to find people with those same attributes in real life.
Of course I'm talking about builds and physical human features, not tentacle limbs or cybernetic parts.
There's a lot of people on this planet, and so much variation. You can find just about everything if you keep looking. Sometimes it's a natural just the way they are thing, sometimes it's surgery, and other times it's from a hell of a lot of hard work that takes many years, but they do exist.

There is this Japanese or Taiwanese (I forgot) artist who draws sexy women, using herself as reference. She has an amazing anatomy to put into slightest most family friendly way of wording as possible. I love how if she were to get criticism for drawing ‘unrealistic women’ she could definitely defend herself because *she* herself is the reference 🤣

These "fixers" are constantly putting down women by drawing them with tiny breasts and being generally rounded. Why can't women be allowed to have big breasts in these people's eyes? Media doesn't help either by thinking giving women no breasts makes them a "strong and capable character"

I’m a female and while I don’t like showing off my body I appreciate the women, both real and fictional, who are bold and sexy. This whole thing about the male gaze is stupid. It's amazing how aesthetically pleasing and attractively shaped bodies are being called "unrealistic" by people who are for the most part formless rainbow blobs. These looks clearly are realistic if you have seen a single cosplay worth its salt, or someone that just dresses eccentrically and happens to be somewhere between svelte and artfully curvy. And while most people aren't going around looking like the super fit, super ripped, sleek and sexy animé and comic characters daily for the most part, it's calle Fantasy for a reason. Because it is either difficult, or impossible to have it in real life, and that in itself is the draw. Pun intended. And plus-sized people should feel free to experiment alike and find their swag, rather than tear down everyone else's out of a narcissistic envy complex.

Imo, you can show your pronoun in your profile to let people know how you identify yourself, but that's it: in the spoken language you should always refer to someone either as He or She; if your sexuality leads more towards one of the two groups, you're called with that pronoun; if you identify in the middle or don't have idea, you use your biological pronoun.

One exception is precisely what it's stated here: getting into an stablished domain, you're bound to follow some patterns (or rules if you must). Music for example, when you're playing classic music, you follow certain structures for it to resemble classic music and be creative around this these structures. Everything is relative to purpose too though, if you meant to do something and you achieve it, there is nothing wrong with it; if you didn't, whatever change that gets you closer to that idea, is considered a "fix".

    First of all: Subbed >:3
Second: This is literally the real life equivalent of that shitty Batwoman dialogue.
"I need you to fix his suit"
    "The suit is literal perfection"
"It will be. When it fits a woman."
This "fixing" nonsense is one of hundreds of thousands of reasons why it has become increasingly difficult for me over the past few years to even consider wanting to associate myself with a fandom. I've seen too many examples of people claiming themselves to be a bigger, better, and more honest fan by using methods like this. I hold my interests at arms length more and more because I get tired of running into clods like this.
This is also applies to my disinterest in creating fanart. Not for a lack of ability. But more so that I'd rather create my own characters, and know full well their design is my artistic intent. I wish these people would apply their efforts in a similar way more often.
Additionally I can see how this can correlate to movie industry; this flood of remakes and soft-reboots, and how it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths compared to their original versions, could be seen as a form of hypocrisy if you liked what came before.
But if someones interpretation can be seen as just that, it's not too much for me to just ignore it and move on if I don't like the new spin on things.
Ironically I personally enjoy Shin Godzilla over the current western iteration (Not saying I hate it though. I like that version too :D), even though the latter is far closer to the traditional TOHO design. But both are treated as separate vision and are taken as such. They're not claiming to be the TRUE Godzilla.
It's when people spin shit to claim their vision as a better or canonical version, while actively or passively tearing down what came before that bugs me. This sub culture mindset can die a swift death. And the world of art will be better for it.

I offer this advice as someone with the artistic talent that rivals a clumsy 4 year old. However, I've got plenty of experience with "reviews" of my writing work.
What you are producing (good or bad) is only for you to judge. Yours is the only opinion that matters. That doesn't mean you have to enjoy people saying rude things about your efforts, but in the end, you're the only one that matters. The only comparison that matters is whether you are better this year than you were last year.
My only caveat to this is if you're drawing professionally. Then the main opinion that matters is the person paying you. If they want you to draw something that you think is awful, that's their issue, they pay the bills.
