  • AVL Tutorial - Part 07 - Aero Console and Calculations
    In this tutorial, I will go through how to run AVL commands for calculations and analysis required for aircraft design and use the geometry, mass and run files (corrected) that we have been building in the previous tutorials to use altogether for the analyses we do in this tutorial.
    I teach a course at the University of Windsor called "Aerodynamics and Performance", which goes through the concepts and theories of aerodynamics and aircraft performance and used AVL and XFoil as the software for students to experiment with their learnings and showcase them in their course project.
    AVL was written by Mark Drela and Harold Youngren (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
    "AVL is a program for the aerodynamic and flight-dynamic analysis of rigid aircraft
    of arbitrary configuration. It employs an extended vortex lattice model for
    the lifting surfaces, together with a slender-body model for fuselages and nacelles.
    General nonlinear flight states can be specified. The flight dynamic analysis
    combines a full linearization of the aerodynamic model about any flight state,
    together with specified mass properties."
    Note:
    If the editor in Aero Console has text showing oddly and letters seem too close to one another, this has to do with the display scale on your system, if it is not at 100% you face this issue. Check the following solutions:

    Goog Morning, and frist, thanks for your videos ! But quick question : when I change the density I observe no variation on the CL display on the Trefftz plane window, do you know where this can come from ?

      Hi an you are welcome! for the air density effect on CL in TF plane, you need to double check if your simulation is actually suing the new run file by going to your density value and checking it before eX the simulation

      @@arahimi_ Thank you ! Well I think there is no doubt it is suing the new run file, and anyway I also tried by modifying it directly in AVL using the "m" command in the oper menu :/

      @@Eromero2690 I'm sorry that did not help, but I think any further investigations would need access to the full set of files you are using for your case!

    Ive built my plane correctly yet Trefftz plane graph is not being plot even after changing the angle of attack. what can be done?

      A couple of questions:
      1. How do you know your model is created properly?
      2. What do you mean by the Trefftz plane is not being plotted?
      3. What steps are you following and are not able to get the Trefftz plot?

    hi, I try to open airfoi.dat file bu I can not. I says 'the problem occur that file not processed. Current geometry may be corrupted. when ı open airfoil file in avl'

      AVL is very picky with spaces and tabs in the file, if you misplace spaces and tabs, it considers the file as corrupted. Your best bet is to start with a sample that has the structure you need for your overall design and change the parameters from there
