    Why do they have to change Provo Temple, that is our Heritage Temple, it does not need to be changed!

      It's possible that they have to. From the bits and rumors I am hearing from multiple sources, the structure of this temple is in very bad shape. My understanding is that it is possibly because of shifting or moving in the foundation itself, though it could just be that the massive cantilever built into the outside edge of the entire third floor is putting undue stress on the framing at the core of the temple. We have learned a lot more about both geology and engineering since this temple was first built. Perhaps it is a combination of both. Geology wise, that area is both a run-off from the canyon behind it, and riddled with fault lines, some of which I suspect were not known about when the temple was first built.
      I do know an attempt was made to add micropiles and shore up the foundation of the temple about 14 years ago (You can see photos of the micropiles and additional support structure here: westlandconstruction.com/portfolio/provo-temple/) but at least one source has indicated it did not help. My guess is that the foundations need to be redone/replaced, which probably requires removing the structure sitting atop the foundation. If that's the case, then it would not matter if they left the temple as is for now. It would come down one way or another eventually.
      At that point, you may as well redesign the entire temple to better meet the needs of the current demographics. Things like adding a second baptistry and changing the capacity of the rooms would require such changes to the interior and exterior shape as to make fitting it into a replica of the original exterior shell impossible. It's important to me to remind myself that temples exist for a function and reason, and not strictly for the sake of the architecture.

      I will miss the old temple. It's literally been right there beside me- my whole entire life. Now, the time is finally at hand, and I'm sad... but its like that for lots of other things & people too. I didn't realize how fast the guard changes. It's not my turn anymore. So, get to it! I hope they got what it takes to do it better, because sooner than later it won't be that either.
      Good bye little temple!! I loved you so!! Thank you for being there all this time.

      Ask President Nelson or other members at his side. They are the ones who make these decisions. By the way there are millions of members who have to travel hundreds if not thousands of miles to visit a temple. You have been fortunate and should not complain.

    Lovely render, but it makes me sad a little. I will miss the old design.

      To me, it has not been the same since they painted the spire white. I think even with the Statue added, it looked better with the bronze colored spire, lit up orange at night. That's the version of the temple I miss.
      I'm also pragmatic enough to recognize that there are likely severe structural issues with the temple, based solely upon the geography around where it sits. So I am sure there was little chance any of the original structure is viable for reconstruction at this point. I've made my peace with the change.

      @@BrianOlsonPhotogent I realize the change is probably quite practical. And maybe they will add another baptistry, they could use it.

      My understanding is that the Presidents of the Provo Temple started petitioning for a Second baptistry back in the 80s. The temple was less than 10 years old! They were told no back then.
      My first and only experience with doing Baptisms as a youth, was at the Provo Temple. Our stake was given like 1 day every couple of years. Our ward went really late, all ordinances were performed by Temple workers, and they spoke so fast you almost could not make out any words. Each kid got to do one sheet, which back then was around 30 names. Same for confirmations.
      The rumors I am hearing is that, yes, the Provo Temple will get a second Baptistry. I hope those rumors are true!

    Thank you for all the information on the Provo temple. I was wondering why they would wait so many years until they would change the temple.

    • @BrianOlsonPhotogent
      @BrianOlsonPhotogent  Рік тому +2

      Making this kind of change to a temple is not something they do lightly or on a whim. I have learned, for example, that the announced but still future pending renovation for the Logan Temple has been off again and on again and under discussion for more than twenty years now. The Salt Lake renovation was something that was first discussed as far back as President Hinckley's time, according to one source.
      One reason for the current wait at Provo is for the Orem Temple to be finished, to take some of the slack for Provo. (I'm guessing it will be the same thing for Logan, wait for the Smithfield Temple to finish.) Other reasons for the delay at Provo might include things like hoping the work done in 2008 would be more long term or ultimately solve issues.
      Ultimately, we will likely not ever know all the back ground details on something like this. The Church tends to not be very open about temple related decisions.

    I was hoping to see your rendering on the Provo City Center temple in the distance as it panned around. You should re-render it with all other buildings gone except the two temple!

      A fun idea, but at this resolution, I am not certain anything would actually be noticeable at that distance!

    No Angel Moroni?

    • @BrianOlsonPhotogent
      @BrianOlsonPhotogent  Рік тому

      No, the official render released by the Church:
      newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/provo-smithfield-utah-temple-exterior-rendering
      Indicates they will remove the statue. This would be the second temple to have had the statue removed, the first being Hong Kong.

    • @BrianOlsonPhotogent
      @BrianOlsonPhotogent  Рік тому

      That is correct. The only 2 temples left slated to receive the statue are temples that started design before President Nelson was called. The program has effectively been discontinued.

    It still baffles me that the temple needs a complete overhaul. There are older temple. This temple was one that was designed to get people through faster and increased temple productivity by a lot.
    Was it just poorly poorly designed to begin with?

    • @BrianOlsonPhotogent

      I don't think the geology of that area is suitable for a building of this size and weight. It's essentially an alluvial deposit from the Canyon behind it. I don't know a lot of geology, but I would guess that means there is either a lot of rock (good,) or a lot of sand in there (very bad, of course.) Then there is the Wasatch front, which runs through that area. I would say most of the problems with the geology in the area were probably discovered AFTER the construction and dedication of the temple.
      In 2008, micropiles and new structural supports were put under the temple, The General Contractor involved posted photos of the event on their site where you can see pillars being sistered in next to the originals, while the tops of micropiles can be seen around the new column pair: westlandconstruction.com/portfolio/provo-temple/ The rumors I am hearing is that it did not help, and that the entire structure is in terrible shape. I don't know if it's true, but the full redo would lend support to that theory.
      The Ogden Temple, as I was told be the site missionaries during the renovation, had both an underground river running below the slab, and a fault line, both discovered after dedication. This necessitated such drastic dismantling of the original structure to fix, that they apparently decided to just change the whole look as well during the rebuild, though they kept the building core to build on.
      In Provo's case, my understanding is that nothing structural of the original, not even the footings, can be reused, hence the new and completely different look. This point of view could be supported by President Nelson's use of the word "reconstruction" rather than 'renovation' or 'remodel' during the announcement.

      The tradition of placing the statue atop temples has been discontinued. The closest to an official statement on this was from the Project Manager for the Lindon Temple, who, when explaining the absence of the statue to the Lindon City Council, said that "it is a change in focus."
