Buffy's speech to the Watchers Council is just about perfect. It has the right amount of Buffy being Buffy, the Watchers being Watcher-y, levity and seriousness, humor and straight talk. It's iconic.
I do want to point out that although the Watchers and their Council are a metaphor for misogyny, just as the Buffy's struggles in the show are a metaphor for growing up, they are not, in-universe, being misogynistic. They do have some hundreds (or thousands?) of years of experience fighting evil, and they do have right to be legitimately concerned about the information they possess can be misused. They are being belligerent here, because (as Buffy pointed out), they have egos that need to be mollified. And, in a way, Buffy getting the better of them proved that she is worthy of being the Slayer, and can be trusted with what they'll be giving her. She didn't play by their rules, but she did win their game.

She passed the test by being everything she really was, not by their approximation of it.

    • @dargron7614
      @dargron7614 14 днів тому +3

@@elfboy29 Buffy didn't need to pass any test, that was her big realisation. She had the Watchers Council pegged. They weren't testing her. They were attempting to make Buffy feel inadequate so that Buffy would end up begging them to be their puppet. The Watchers Council were trying to intimidate Buffy to get her to willingly do as they wanted, same as Glory - the Watchers were just being more subtle and manipulative about it.

@@becca1189 I've been following Ian Martin (PotN) since before he started his _Buffy_ reviews, and my recognition of the metaphors is straight out of his book. It's the in-universe take that I disagree with him on.

@@menachemsalomon The fact remains that the only person who has any chance defeating Glory is Buffy. The Council would have to tell her one way or the other. They simply wanted to do so in a way that put them back in charge. Otherwise they simply could've shared the information with her from the get go. Putting the fate of the world ahead of their own agenda: control The Slayer. Misogynistic or not they were being manipulative & controlling. It was themselves they were concerned about, not if Buffy was worthy or if the information would be safe with her. I'm sure they kept tabs on her & her activities. They already knew she was on the "good" side. I doubt they would've even bothered to make the trip across the pond otherwise. The fact that Buffy needed them enough for Giles to meet with them opened the door for them to regain control of Buffy & they took the opportunity to do so. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

The showdown between Buffy and The Watchers at the end was so cathartic. Years of built up frustration finally coming back on them and it was extremely satisfying to see Buffy finally put them in their place and take back her power.

And the villain is revealed at last…
Buffy has quite a resume. Dealing with vampires, werewolves, evil witches, mummies, dummies, robots, snakes, faith, commandos, hyenas, invisible people, anointed ones, death, evil watchers, trolls, human knights, just to name a few, lol.
Now…she deals with a God. No wonder the watcher’s council came back. They need her more than they care to admit.

In case it wasn't 100% clear Buffy was speculating that Rasputin was a vampire or some other demon. This episode always reminds me how little Glory has been in the series till now. This is one of Buffy's best speech's in the series, like many a repressed worker she realises the value of her labour and threatens to withdraw it if she didn't get her way. Great stuff.

And this episode, in part, helps cement my suspicion that Joyce is secretly an art smuggler, and that Giles is her fence.
Hear me out, and this episode doesn't necessarily pertain specifically to Joyce's role in this, but... She's always been bringing all these crates home whenever the gallery is doing "inventory" - but why would she bring any of those items to her home? Wouldn't you do inventory at the gallery? You know, to inventory what you have at the gallery?
There were pieces she'd just keep and put up around the house, like the zombie mask from "Dead Man's Party".
As for Giles' part, he was unemployed for all of season 4, but seemed to be financially comfortable. He admitted he only bought the magic shop because he was bored, and because he didn't want the Scoobie meeting at his apartment all the time. It's plausible that in season 3, between his knowledge of potentially dangerous, mystical art she might smuggle in, and learning the Council had fired him, she approached Giles with the opportunity to supplement his income. He accepted begrudgingly, then ultimately decided to buy the magic shop as a front for selling some of the mystic pieces. And _that_ is how he came into possession of the statue that was illegally removed from another country, that could melt human eyes... 🤔

    NIGEL: "This is beyond insolence-"
    *swish THUNK*
BUFFY: "I'm fairly certain I said no interruptions."
THE AUDIENCE: "YES! YES! HELL YES!"
Absolutely one of my favorite sequences all season. We've seen Buffy scrambling since the start of it: dealing with a kid sister, finding out said sister is actually a mystical key and her memories are all manufactured, the threat of Glory, her mom's illness, and Riley's dissatisfaction and departure. She's been on the backfoot in episode after episode.
But then the Council shows up, Glory pops up in her home to have a chit-chat, and a group of literal knights (The Knights of Byzantium) ambushes her, and finally she comes to the realization that it's all about the power she has over all of them. No longer on the backfoot, she plants her heels and takes charge. You can only push Buffy so far before she pushes back, and you absolutely love to see it.

I get what you're saying about Riley and Buffy, but the arc of their storyline felt very true to life. Some folks may never have experienced what Riley did or may just not be wired to think that way, but to realize and be reminded again and again that the one that you are madly deeply in love with, had been even more madly deeply in love with another before you and remains so and simply isn't with them due to a circumstance beyond both their control, well it can be crushing and bring about a great sadness that can only be made worse by proximity. A proximity and acceptance that Riley at first chose, thinking that his love would be enough. But he was not alone in his realization and then had to actually meet that other person who before could have just been a story not yet made real, but then by seeing him, meeting, him talking to him and being physically overwhelmed by him, well imagine that.
Every close family and friend and even enemy of Buffy's that was around to witness both relationships are aware as well and they constantly bring things up unintentionally and intentionally in the case of Spike to make it known to Riley. He's only with her because her true love, her first love is not an option. Riley can only ever be the safe choice, the possible choice, but never fully, wholly, completely, without a shadow of a doubt, the choice.

Glory didn't need Bens help in finding Buffy since Ben by mistake told the minion that her name was Buffy Summers so all Glory had to do was to use the phone book to find the summers residence.
Always loved Buffy:s power speak over the council in the end, the only negative bit is the extremely American tv/movie trope of having the scoobies cheering and clapping at the end (or this is perhaps normal behavior in the US and not just a media thing, I have no idea, as a non American it just feels so strange and out of place).

I'm not a big fan of Riley, but not necessarily his biggest retractor. I have come to appreciate though that Riley in season 4 is kind of different from Riley in season 5. His relationship seems a lot better with Buffy and I can buy them as a couple, even if I stan Buffy and Angel.
I think the depiction of Buffy and Riley's relationship, and Riley as a character in season 5 overshadows people's impressions of Riley and his relationship with Buffy overall.
I first started watching regularly towards the end of season 4, so a lot of my familiarity with Riley and Buffy was season 5 for a long time; especially since season 4 wasn't in reruns right away where Buffy was being syndicated (back in the stone age, when we were at the whims of network schedules and syndication deals....); and it took many rewatches to appreciate the nuance of these characters, and season 4 in its own right; which for a long time always seemed like a weaker season. It's more so the season arc that's weak, but it has a long strong individual episodes.

Power speech are absolutely awesome! Buffy after everything that happenend to her, and her beloved, is still capable to demonstrate how much Amazing she is. Strong, indipendent, smart and percectly aware of her role, and with the carisma to impose her condition to Watchers. it's very harsh portrayal of the way the watcher's were set up. They Are like the NCAA making millions of dollars off "student " Athletes and just replacing them every four years with little regard for them, their well being or their health. Meanwhile the people actually doing the job (athletes/slayers) aren't being compensated for the income they generate or the good they do.
This Interview scene gets reused in Firefly when Malcolm and his crew are captured by an alliance Cruiser in Bushwhacked though it's mostly Wash who gets the comedy bits.

Exactly! Part of the reason that he seemed inconsistent was the fans loved him so much, and the writers kept having to make him do truly vile things to remind them of that very fact. In the Buffyverse, soulless vampire = evil. Not all demons are evil (some are harmless), but vamps are evil unless they have a soul.

54 pages left in the book of Buffy and a wonderful episode that frames this brilliant season. The internet / UA-cam etc. get plenty of grief, but without these technologies we would never know Juliette in the land down under. Its been a blessing to share time with her and thank you Jules for reaching out.

I remember you commenting along season 4 how you didn't like unemployed Giles, and how he could possibly afford it. Well, in this episode we realize he was double dipping, he was paid for being librarian by Sunnydale, but he was also being paid by the Watcher's Council. We also know that he could be hired as an antiquities expert like he was in the end of Season 2 when they discovered Acathla. Giles had plenty stashed away, I'm sure.
The only thing that gets me, Buffy might have negotiated for something for herself while she had them over a barrel, very annoying, but I guess that selflessness is in line with her character.

A fantastic episode that finally sees Buffy not only stand up to the council, but put them in their place. It's so satisfying after what they did to her back in Season 3.
That scene between Buffy and Glory also really serves to raise Glory's threat factor. She may not do anything, but she just feels so threatening and dangerous - Clare Kramer does an incredible job. Then of course there's that big reveal at the end that recontextualises everything they thought they knew about Glory.

Rewatching Buffy, yeah, get used to that - although rewatching before you finish the series might mean you need help. Either help or a 2nd monitor, whichever. I can't wait to watch you react to your reactions to Buffy, Jules-ception if you will.
Thanks for the great reaction, I hope we all have a wonderful day ahead of us.
EDIT: Oh, about the question of how Glory found Buffy's home - telephone directories used to be a common thing way back when, they listed people by name and included their address and phone number. Once Ben said her full name that was enough information to look up all the Summers names in the area, and if there was stake out the houses, or, if there was only one family with that name, then they knew it had to be her place.

The weekend, Jules💜 Welcome to it!
I want to firstly say I think it only natural that Dawn is listening in more. I would be sort of creeped out if people stopped talking when I entered the room as well, added to the bits she has already heard. The Scoobs need to learn to limit their conversations, about Club things, to the Club. It's why Fight Club has the Don't talk about Fight Club rule! 😅
Riley and Buffy. I do love reading the comments whenever you toss out a thought about Riley - The comments become a Just After Watching Passions moment - with all manner of yeahs and nays - although it would seem to be tilting in the nay direction, mostly. It's good that Spike and Joyce don't seem to have so many divisive issues with the soaps! 😜
I was very curious as to what Glory actually was, so I welcomed that bit of info from the Council. However, do not lose faith in the gang, you've seen what Kratos has done, many times. All things are possible, until they are not.
The musings you make on Spike are very funny as well - since they also bring out the few Passions level freakouts in the comments 🤣
I like to think that this episode shows Buffy, as you say - "... elevated to a new level... " I thought it showed she has turned a corner - on many things. Regained a purpose, put Riley behind her, rededicated herself to the cause, and, obviously, struck back at the egotistical, stuffed shirts, by showing them how well she truly does know herself, and showed them her resolve to deal with this, for reasons which go way beyond the simple imposition of order they claim to uphold.
I am sure the writers will have her revert, now and again, to her high school self, but it was great to see her character given the respect and power she warrants in this series, and let it be known that they All function as a group, regardless of levels of contribution. A powerful scene.
Once again, they do manage to sneak in small moments of humor. Anya, is still hilarious, Willow, and Tara deflecting the interview pressure was delightful, Giles - always great, and Spike sitting with Joyce to watch a soap opera episode. Just a well put together entry in the Buffy story. 😂
And I really enjoyed the ending shot - a response which has become so attached to the John Wick movies - "Oh." 😂
Have a wonderful weekend, Jules💜🤗💜 I hope you enjoyed last night's pizza - I think it is always better when the crust is from scratch - Sorry about the mushrooms though! I hope the Herbs, and, of course, the Cheese, stepped up! 🥰
I will be watering my trees, pepper plant, herbs, and bird/squirrel 🐿 watering hole shortly, and that's about it - very unhealthy air in store for the entire weekend, and probably next week, during the massive heat dome - oh well. It's summer, so, unfortunately, expected. Take care! 😊

      Tom 😸💜
I am so glad you enjoyed this episode as well, especially Buffy taking her stand there at the end. I feel that at times I can really relate to her, and although I know she is extremely capable of great things, she does seem to battle a lot of self-doubt at times. She really shouldn't. She is incredible. I do like that she's not all "superhero-y" and overconfident, kinda makes her more relatable hehe 😜
Some of the freak outs about Spike or Riley in the comments make me a little nervous as I don't like confrontation, so I've definitely been pulling back a lot lately with interacting. But I do love how people are SO passionate. It really is such a wonderful show with the best cast of characters 💜
I hope you have a fantastic weekend, Tom 💜 I'm doing "okay". I've really not felt like myself lately and need to have a bit of a shake up, I think! Anxiety/nerves/blahs for no reason. See, your heat dome sounds wonderful but in reality, I bet it's not 😅 I'll just have to be content with wearing a few extra layers. I wore a cardigan to bed last night as it was so cold but forgot the socks and was too lazy to get up 🤣

Great reaction to an episode that every Buffy fan has wanted since Helpless in Season 3. You started off by lamenting the failed Riley- Buffy romance. It is sad but this episode in its way is a map to what Riley and Buffy were doomed. Riley is the perfect suburban Male provider and family head type. His wife is in the Junior League, is a class room Mother, and is a Girl Scout Leader for her daughter Muffin. Now look at Buffy in this episode. Can the Buffy that tells the council off, beat up knights, and stand up to a God be happy clipping coupons and waiting in the car pool line? The episode starts with Buffy reminding herself about Riley and ends with a stronger independent Buffy taking command. This episode is the demonstration of a maturing Buffy that is still learning and will need a true partner one day that is her equal emotionally, mentally, sexually, and physically…. That’s not Riley
