    This video is about how life arose and what its main function or purpose in the universe seems to be. Throughout the universe there is a driving tendency for entropy to increase and free energy to be used up; however, sometimes there is some sort of barrier holding back further potential increase in entropy - these entropically favored but not directly possible reactions (like hydrogen nuclei fusing to become helium, or carbon dioxide reacting with hydrogen to form methane and water), can be achieved by larger systems, often complex or complicated, that allow multi-step reaction chains that ultimately lead to the entropically favored state. These systems, (stars, whose nuclei foster conditions amenable to fusion of hydrogen into helium, and life, which fosters conditions amenable to hydrogenating carbon dioxide) are naturally entropically favored, once they arise. And thus the purpose of both life, and stars, can be seen, in the context of the universe, as being a catalyst system that helps facilitate increases in entropy that are not otherwise possible.
    Music for the series was especially composed by Nathaniel Schroeder, / drschroeder

      But by increasing entropy we ultimately contribute to heat death of the universe which sound like suicidal action.
      So remember if you want to universe last as long as possible, just lie down and do nothing till you die (which by itself is also suicidal action :)

Shiva is a relatable humanoid figure with knowable properties, his dance an excellent metaphor for understanding and relating to the cycle of destruction and rebirth.
      Honestly, I think it's kind of hypocritical for someone on a Popscience video like this to criticize someone for building that relationship. These videos are all about helping people build an emotional relationship to whatever psychobabble is coming out of the scientific journals these days, hence the corny elevator music and cartoony drawings.

    Consider this: much of the universe only exists in the perception of living things. For example, "beauty" is a valuation applied to the universe by the human brain, but that doesn't make beauty synthetic or any less real, because our brains are a natural, real function of the universe. Since beauty manifests in perception, as living things we serve to manifest beauty in the universe.
    One could consider that, rather than us having a purpose within the universe, it is us that fulfills the purpose OF the universe; for the existence of beauty.

    • @lradmclovin9
      @lradmclovin9 7 років тому +9

      The human brain is nothing but a function of the fundamental laws of physics, and therefore so are it's concepts. The concept of beauty ultimately reduces to physical processes as physical as a star or a rock, but we have to exist to give rise to it's existence. It's nice to think that the universe's complexity goes so deep as to eventually give rise to some notion of "beauty", and it's nice to be part of that.
      Or don't consider it. Your meaning is whatever you decide it to be.

      I'm a physicist, but I think it's naive and absolutist to belittle human perspective. We're talking about value and meaning, these things only exist in human perspective, they are not scientific. But one can still enhance them with science. It's ok for a scientific mind to indulge in philosophy, it's very useful actually. We create meaning to motivate ourselves.

      No, No, No! ... Rubish!
      Let's get back to the original meaning of the word:
      "Beauty" is a vocalization (very close to "Booty") that certain hominids (male sapienses) exclamate in the presence of a potential mating partner, and is addressed usually to: 1) either the target of their mating desires carrying the said desires as meaning, or 2) surrounding peers of the same gender signifying their arousal and therefore their potential claims for a partner.
      It has nothing to do with Universes, Life, and their meaning, it's just a colorful substitute for the words "fuck" and "I wanna fuck" and "I wanna fuck this (points at target)"

      Think this way and you will live a miserable life. How about go to school and do what you love, put in effort, those that sits in a corner and complains about everything are the ones that end up living an awful life without friends, family and a boring job. You have to work, because it is how society works. You either can choose to work hard to do what you love, have money to assure comfort to your loved ones and to enjoy yourself (activities, trips, sports, hobbies) experience new things and become better than your former self, then die peacefully surrounded by your friends ans family knowing you've spent a happy life and left something great (a legacy) behind you for them to remember you. Or you can choose the lazy way and complain about the fact that you have to work to get anything (which is just FAIR), so you choose to not follow the rules, then being a threat to your surroundings, then complain the system is not fair because you consciously chose to go against it. Or you can also leave society and go live in the wilderness, dying 3 months later because nature isn't kind to humans and also because you left the comfort and security provided by the society we're all in. Grow up. Its just a matter of perspective.

    The term purpose denotes a consciously imposed goal to be reached.

    • @passer2by
      @passer2by 4 роки тому

      But how do you define consciousness?

    • @passer2by
      @passer2by 4 роки тому +2

      You can look up the dictionaries if you want, but you'll realize when you try to define consciousness, you inevitably need to refer human, or living creatures, or life in some way. So the question comes back to, "then what is life?" You see the logic here? You can't really define the term "purpose" before you know how to define life, so the more fundamental question is "what is life?", then you can start answer more complicated questions like "what is the purpose of life?". This is exactly what this video did. My point is, we always think we know the meaning of words we use, but we actually don't.

      Well sometimes we can define something by it's function just like a pen is a thing used for writing. (I know we define a pen in many different ways but then it's become even hard to define anything. Even giving definition to the word definition is quite hard.)

      So by that logic, is the purpose of a car transportation or is it just to burn gasoline? Or is the purpose of a car just to rust and wither away? I agree that, as human beings, we create our own purpose in life, but entropy is a function of life and not a purpose. Your own definition says "for which" not "by which". The difference is subtle but relevant.

    • @CharlesStawell
      @CharlesStawell 7 років тому +2

      I have always reasoned that it is a breakage of the definition of the word "purpose" to pose the leading question "What is the purpose of life?" To string together such a question is to first imply there is a universal agency & concious intent behind some great universe creator(s)... as opposed to random happenings of pre-life to life... where before any agent of desire was born with cognitive ability to desire there was no desire, purpose or reasoning in the universe. In short: Purpose is an reasoning of desire by living things, which on the macroscopic scale there is none, nor beyond the possibility of our parents desire for family was their ever a remote purpose for our own lives... A lot of us our just blundered into existence by out of control parents... It's a fallacy of language to ask such broken questions when you examine the logic of the question and consider what you're implying as fact by leading your inquiry with an initial false statement. It's like "What's the meaning of life?" ask any logical being this question and they'd first reason that the "question" posed is leading and implies that the happening of life lends itself to some kind of divine definition of something more... which is fictional.... or put in kinder terms: Delusional or perhaps spiritual. when was it ever discovered that life had "meaning" or "purpose"? It's just humans making stuff up to sound grand and lofty... the only meanings of "life" is for the word "life" found with the dictionary definitions for the word "life" found in any dictionary you might come across in day to day life.

    If entropy increasing is a law and always hold for any system, then Jupiter is doing as good of a job as Earth in increasing the entropy of the universe. So, how the purpose of life be "to do something that the universe does by itself anyways"?
    My take on this is you are reading way too much into a simple fact. "The entropy in the universe always increase, even when life forms are involved".

Sean Carroll is the kind of guy who wants you to question the meaning behind even asking "what is the purpose of life?" You take for granted that it's not relevant rather than trying to see the relevance.

      I agree with you :) They should change the title to "The Destiny of the Universe"
      The meaning of life is not a topic that is within the scope of physics, or even science for that matter.

      Its a physics video. You make your own personal meaning to your life as we all do. There is no objective meaning of life that could be applicable on a human scale because of the diversity of our minds, backgrounds, ambitions etc.

    Only one problem. İs life possible because of entrpy or its merely a by product of entropic processes.
    How can we differentiate life and universe serving entropy and merely doing what they do which just happens to serve entropy.

      Life can't not serve entropy. Life doesn't get a free pass on the laws of thermodynamics.

      Merely a semantics problem. Change "serving" for "being a conduit for" if you need to remove allusions to a conscious process.

      Hakan Karaağaç Yeah I agree. The video said 'Life exists because of entropy, and to increase entropy', but aren't life's entropy-increasing effects just a byproduct?

      Hakan Karaağaç Yeah, the way the video is phrased makes it sound like life was created TO speed up entropy. Which sounds incorrect to me.

    lol this is the most pleasant way of saying everything is pointless that I've ever seen. So we're here to irrevocably change the universe into its end-state, cosmological cold death. How do you love.
