This video is about how life arose and what its main function or purpose in the universe seems to be. Throughout the universe there is a driving tendency for entropy to increase and free energy to be used up; however, sometimes there is some sort of barrier holding back further potential increase in entropy - these entropically favored but not directly possible reactions (like hydrogen nuclei fusing to become helium, or carbon dioxide reacting with hydrogen to form methane and water), can be achieved by larger systems, often complex or complicated, that allow multi-step reaction chains that ultimately lead to the entropically favored state. These systems, (stars, whose nuclei foster conditions amenable to fusion of hydrogen into helium, and life, which fosters conditions amenable to hydrogenating carbon dioxide) are naturally entropically favored, once they arise. And thus the purpose of both life, and stars, can be seen, in the context of the universe, as being a catalyst system that helps facilitate increases in entropy that are not otherwise possible.

When someone tells me I need to tidy up, I answer with "The meaning of life is to create a huge mess.".
Alvulnax Actually tiding up is better at increasing entropy, which is our purpouse: have you ever noticed that order is harder to make than disorder? That's because it takes more energy to do it.
The Commentator
That's true. But letting it chaotic does not cost any time.
But by increasing entropy we ultimately contribute to heat death of the universe which sound like suicidal action.
So remember if you want to universe last as long as possible, just lie down and do nothing till you die (which by itself is also suicidal action :)
The heat death of the universe is a slightly more distant future than your hunger death...
Alvulnax Lol
Awesome video! A worthy end to your series. Now we have to rewrite a script we wanted to release next year though.
I know I should not but... haha :D

Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky I love your channel
I wonder how many times someone has picked up the hotline and then heard a gunshot
Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky that joke wasn't even remotely funny.
Jack Hanson you first.
"You are really important, without you the entropy of the universe wouldn't have a good way to increase in order to allow heat death and hence the end of all life and existence"
*gunshot*
Yeah, really motivating
but where does 42 come into play?
Valid point
Ciroluiro the video is roughly 4:2 long
How many raptor engines on the ITS does it take to make humanity multi-planetary?
look at the video lenght
look at the number of thumbs up in your comment
So the meaning of life is to make the heat-death of the universe happen sooner? Nice.
A video by Michael Stevens suggests that the only way that you could do to keep the universe age longer, is not to do anything, just lying in your bed all the time, in order to maintain the universe entropy level.
yup... Nice
I would rather see it as the universe having a midlife crisis and deciding to do something cool with whatever time/useful energy it's got left
...just to start the whole thing again and again ;)
The energy gets to us and fades no matter what we do, I doubt we speed up entropy that much, we just make it more imbalanced.
The meaning of life is to distract yourself from realizing that life is meaningless.
the meaning of life is you give it a meaning*
Meaning of life is cats.
what will happen when humans are able to control and manipulate their emotions? will they obtain utter meaninglessness because the drivers no longer drive us? or will they return to the usual slavery, realizing that what lies beyond will be the end of the humans species as we know it.
the answer you seek is 42
Rather than trying to find the meaning to life, give life a meaning instead
I think I get it now: We have to destroy the Sun to save the universe from Entropy!
Nailed it!
I wish it were that easy.
Try blowing it up

SS-Captain Lurmey great... increase the number of Hydrogen atoms in the sun... that works
No lie, I was having an existential crisis before watching this.
This didn't help, but liked nonetheless.
I'm good at breathing but suck at life.
then you are good at sucking at life
But I guess that's better, than the other way around
No one sucks at life, until they die.
as soon as you're born... you're dying
Already before that, even, just (usually) at a lower rate.
Meaning of life is you give it a meaning. There, you're welcome for the answer.
Fried Rai ayreon - sixth extinction. "The meaning of life is give life meaning "
Fried Rai
Doesn't seem like that meaning means much if it is so easily changed...
Ayreon, fuck yeah!!
Great answer! Love it!
Wow
Isn't this a little bit like saying that the purpose of a car is to wear down the treads on tires?
Nah, cars have a purpose. Life does nothing other than absorb order and eject disorder.
You see, if you dont use the car, the tyres will never wear. i guess the purpose of life is to literally use and make the most of a given opportunity. Like ur life, if u do NOTHING with your life, then you will never have failures, or sadness will never come. But you see, happiness will never come either. I guess purpose of life is basically to progress, knowing the fact that you will also wear down over time.
shrenik jobanputra Beautiful. Much better answer
No, cars have an obvious purpose, to get from A to B, life does not have an obvious purpose, or if it does, I would very much like to hear what it is.
@@ladyalicent705 If Life had a definitive purpose, what would happen? You would pursue that purpose and then what? Would your life become meaningless afterwards? This is the reason there is no defined purpose, and its perpetual. You will always find a new purpose at every point of time.
The purpose of life is to find a purpose at every point of life!
"The purpose of life is to continue the mission of the stars"
Now who the fuck says science isn't romantic?!?
The purpose of the stars is to continue the process of the universe which is to increase entropy which leads to an inevitable dead system in which nothing happens, including but not limited to the end of all life, matter, energy, or order.
Perfect.
RoarOfDamnation just like romance.
It's not the science that's romantic. It's how we choose to interpret and apply the facts and observations that science has provided.
With the same facts but with a different conclusion this vid could have been the most cold-hearted, sterile, and depressing video about the universe and our uselessness.
Peter Lin :)
is it just me or is the idea of entropy being used very frequently recently?
It's just you
heyits- alex Its one of those topics. Once you learn about it, you see it everywhere. So maybe you have just learnt it recently. Thats why u seeing it everywhere...

I always thought that the purpose of life is to escape the heat death of the universe, not act as a catalyst.
I mean, life is just the universe itself becoming sentient, hoping to escape death, as we all do.
Plus, Google's AI said that the purpose of life is to live forever.
♪ It's such a shame the same will never happen to you. ♫
Counter The Animator who would want to live forever?? I don't suppose anyone would want that.
At some point as we aged, surely everyone would reach some form of mental breakdown along the way.
Our brain can only contain and process so much information until the point when we get tired of it. Since everyday life experience is basically a repeated information, or will get repeated along the way, given enough time to experience it. Even history of mankind is like repeated stuff happening all over again and again. More often than not, even by about the same manner on how it started until how it end.
I agree, but who says we have to stick to the brain? Who says that eventually technology couldn't expand or supersede it?
rush21hit The problem is, the very bottom of the passage of time of as a result of chemical reactions from low to high entropy. so you can never get to forever without infinite energy
Man I absolutely loved this series. So good. Thanks so much for making it.

Just now I'm thinking, am I the only one whose eyes get misty when watching physics videos?
This is one of the best video series on UA-cam, and I'm sad there are only 5 of them. It's just about physics, and yet somehow is genuinely awe inspiring. If there is any chance of you guys working together again, you owe it to humanity to make it happen! :)
Well I guess most people have a faith in something, my faith is that big bangs occur every time max entropy is reached creating a whole new universe over and over again in an infinite space and time that we don't really comprehend.
The Indian god Shiva, is seen by me as the big bang, or the destroyer and creator of the universe.
It's a deity which has an alleged property loosely resembling your picture of the universe. Why obstructing the profound idea of a perpetual universal cycle with an extra layer of unsubstantiated mystery?
People need to find a way to build an emotional connection to the world around them. Without that connection, there is no sense of profundity, just a bunch of matter flying around and changing form. Shiva is a relatable humanoid figure with knowable properties, his dance an excellent metaphor for understanding and relating to the cycle of destruction and rebirth.
Honestly, I think it's kind of hypocritical for someone on a Popscience video like this to criticize someone for building that relationship. These videos are all about helping people build an emotional relationship to whatever psychobabble is coming out of the scientific journals these days, hence the corny elevator music and cartoony drawings.
Captain Velociraptor have you never heard of the 2nd law of thermodynamics?
Captain Velociraptor entropy is always increasing and at the heat death of the universe everything will be evenly distributed which means there is max entropy.
Consider this: much of the universe only exists in the perception of living things. For example, "beauty" is a valuation applied to the universe by the human brain, but that doesn't make beauty synthetic or any less real, because our brains are a natural, real function of the universe. Since beauty manifests in perception, as living things we serve to manifest beauty in the universe.
One could consider that, rather than us having a purpose within the universe, it is us that fulfills the purpose OF the universe; for the existence of beauty.
The human brain is nothing but a function of the fundamental laws of physics, and therefore so are it's concepts. The concept of beauty ultimately reduces to physical processes as physical as a star or a rock, but we have to exist to give rise to it's existence. It's nice to think that the universe's complexity goes so deep as to eventually give rise to some notion of "beauty", and it's nice to be part of that.
Or don't consider it. Your meaning is whatever you decide it to be.
Bernie Sanders Oh, being as stoned as I am, I consider a lot of deep stuff. I appreciate beauty, but when looking at anything scientifically, emotion is just baggage.
Freely Liberal
I'm a physicist, but I think it's naive and absolutist to belittle human perspective. We're talking about value and meaning, these things only exist in human perspective, they are not scientific. But one can still enhance them with science. It's ok for a scientific mind to indulge in philosophy, it's very useful actually. We create meaning to motivate ourselves.
Bernie Sanders I'm not belittling our perspective. I find us remarkable as a part of nature. I love physics and how everything works. But in the end we are still just a very tiny cog in natures engine.
No, No, No! ... Rubish!
Let's get back to the original meaning of the word:
"Beauty" is a vocalization (very close to "Booty") that certain hominids (male sapienses) exclamate in the presence of a potential mating partner, and is addressed usually to: 1) either the target of their mating desires carrying the said desires as meaning, or 2) surrounding peers of the same gender signifying their arousal and therefore their potential claims for a partner.
It has nothing to do with Universes, Life, and their meaning, it's just a colorful substitute for the words "fuck" and "I wanna fuck" and "I wanna fuck this (points at target)"
:D :D
This video is wrong. The purpose of life is to work our asses off, pay bills, and die.
:'(
That's exactly what the video said our pupose was. Work in order to release as much energy as possible, before you die.
So keep on dying my friend!
Think this way and you will live a miserable life. How about go to school and do what you love, put in effort, those that sits in a corner and complains about everything are the ones that end up living an awful life without friends, family and a boring job. You have to work, because it is how society works. You either can choose to work hard to do what you love, have money to assure comfort to your loved ones and to enjoy yourself (activities, trips, sports, hobbies) experience new things and become better than your former self, then die peacefully surrounded by your friends ans family knowing you've spent a happy life and left something great (a legacy) behind you for them to remember you. Or you can choose the lazy way and complain about the fact that you have to work to get anything (which is just FAIR), so you choose to not follow the rules, then being a threat to your surroundings, then complain the system is not fair because you consciously chose to go against it. Or you can also leave society and go live in the wilderness, dying 3 months later because nature isn't kind to humans and also because you left the comfort and security provided by the society we're all in. Grow up. Its just a matter of perspective.
you can skip step 1 and 2
He was fucking joking dude. Maybe you should start thinking like him instead, you might learn to enjoy life more :)

i think the universe might be suicidal :/
It wants to commit suicide😭
No bro..It is just murderous. It wants to kill us and not itself. ;)
It is killing itself every second so you can say it😅
Man, I really love both this series and even moreso this song! I've checked out the artist already, but this song is one of my favorite video background songs EVER!
In a nutshell, its basically like:
"The purpose of the smartphone is to drain battery"
Real man's life: Beer, Fuck and evolve
Jeppe JCP evolved: beer,fuck,fuck
Most living organisms have only one goal: stay alive long enough to procreate, and preferably long enough to help their offspring get a good start in life so that they can procreate as well.
Kill people you don't like; fuck the girls you do.
Evolve within your lifetime? That's pretty rad
I really liked this. This is my favorite of this series.
I think this video conflates purpose with effect.
The term purpose denotes a consciously imposed goal to be reached.
But how do you define consciousness?
You can look up the dictionaries if you want, but you'll realize when you try to define consciousness, you inevitably need to refer human, or living creatures, or life in some way. So the question comes back to, "then what is life?" You see the logic here? You can't really define the term "purpose" before you know how to define life, so the more fundamental question is "what is life?", then you can start answer more complicated questions like "what is the purpose of life?". This is exactly what this video did. My point is, we always think we know the meaning of words we use, but we actually don't.
"Humanity is a way for the universe to experience itself"
I don't remember who said that though, and I'm too lazy to check
I heard something like that in an Alan Watts video
It's Also a sufi belief
When i was a kid i came to the realization of that we are a part of the universe, so thanks to us the universe is in a way alive and conscious.

That kinda changed the way I understand entropy. Neat.

I suggest to read into it further if you care about accuracy then. Entropy is not a measure of disorder. Rest was fine.

It's a while since I said this about videos on this channel because I think they have become too complicated... but this video really was for me just the right amount of challenging and brilliantly put together.

Superman kind of throws this whole theory out the window.
Wow. Physics dont apply to fiction! Amazeballs

This is very thoughtful! thanks for video
I don't get how that's a 'meaning'.
It's a function. The function of my pen is to write. The 'meaning' of my specific pen is very different than it's function.
Appreciate the analysis, though it's a little lacking.
Yes, the title was somewhat misleading. The video should have been titled "What is the function of life?"
Well sometimes we can define something by it's function just like a pen is a thing used for writing. (I know we define a pen in many different ways but then it's become even hard to define anything. Even giving definition to the word definition is quite hard.)
At 2:44, when lipid bilayer was written, you said "cell wall". Cell walls are made of cellulose. What you probably meant was cell membrane.
Indeed
not just cellulose, but lipopolysaccharides and peptidoglycans too, but yeah, that's a membrane, not a wall
He said precursor of cell wall...
Lipid membranes aren't a precursor for cell walls though. Their chemical composition is pretty different.
The cells built a Great Wall and made the viruses pay for it

Loved the series!
But are stars really the biggest entropy source? I think black holes are bigger. They eat _matter_ , which is just very tightly packed energy. Then, after a long long time, the black holes decay into nothing but heat and other useless energy.
In the long run yea I guess, but I would say that black holes are actually pretty good at conserving any mass they consume.

We are causality given consciousness. In us, the universe has created something extraordinary for itself... choice. This video is about how entropy relates to life not the "purpose" of it. Is plastic the _purpose_ of a ping pong ball? Silly physicists... >.
"this may be the biggest mystery of all the ones on which we dwell,
how the universe created a tool with which to know itself."
bee-tee-dubs, "Purpose; def. the reason [...] for which something exists."
"Why does life exist, what is the reason?" "Because the universe tends toward entropy."
We're used to the idea of essence preceding existence because _we_ make things for reasons, but we ourselves were not, so our existence precedes our essence. Life is like Minecraft; you're responsible for your own enjoyment
XD sorry gates! *edited*
thanks for reading it tho
Matt Watt
So by that logic, is the purpose of a car transportation or is it just to burn gasoline? Or is the purpose of a car just to rust and wither away? I agree that, as human beings, we create our own purpose in life, but entropy is a function of life and not a purpose. Your own definition says "for which" not "by which". The difference is subtle but relevant.
Oh, and ignore that other guy. He's just jaded. Too much bashing his head against a brick wall for no reason.
Richy Rich my fault for trying to justify them using the word purpose :-P touché, I was disappointed in the title... searched for meaning lol
'mechanisms by which' would be most fitting, I'll admit my 'reason for being late' is not necessarily 'on purpose' so I got nothing
I have always reasoned that it is a breakage of the definition of the word "purpose" to pose the leading question "What is the purpose of life?" To string together such a question is to first imply there is a universal agency & concious intent behind some great universe creator(s)... as opposed to random happenings of pre-life to life... where before any agent of desire was born with cognitive ability to desire there was no desire, purpose or reasoning in the universe. In short: Purpose is an reasoning of desire by living things, which on the macroscopic scale there is none, nor beyond the possibility of our parents desire for family was their ever a remote purpose for our own lives... A lot of us our just blundered into existence by out of control parents... It's a fallacy of language to ask such broken questions when you examine the logic of the question and consider what you're implying as fact by leading your inquiry with an initial false statement. It's like "What's the meaning of life?" ask any logical being this question and they'd first reason that the "question" posed is leading and implies that the happening of life lends itself to some kind of divine definition of something more... which is fictional.... or put in kinder terms: Delusional or perhaps spiritual. when was it ever discovered that life had "meaning" or "purpose"? It's just humans making stuff up to sound grand and lofty... the only meanings of "life" is for the word "life" found with the dictionary definitions for the word "life" found in any dictionary you might come across in day to day life.
Answer 1 (Philosophical) - The meaning of life is to give life a meaning.
Answer 2 (Accurate) - 42
ok, these 5 videos are the best physics videos I have ever seen. You have covered more, and in a clearer way, than I have got from a great deal more sources. I'm beginning to wonder if understanding something complex is increasing entropy. :-) and if that is why we are motivated to learn, and more importantly to understand.

Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here. Oh my too deep please stop thinking 😖
If entropy increasing is a law and always hold for any system, then Jupiter is doing as good of a job as Earth in increasing the entropy of the universe. So, how the purpose of life be "to do something that the universe does by itself anyways"?
My take on this is you are reading way too much into a simple fact. "The entropy in the universe always increase, even when life forms are involved".
The point is that life allows some forms of energy to be degraded, which couldn't be degraded by simple means.
Life indeed does something that the universe does by itself, it just helps doing it faster. It could happen, so it happened.
this is truly beautiful 💜
I really enjoyed this series :-)
The universe is suicidal. Poor thing :(
Perfect, the video has 42 views for me!
0:25 Schroedinger's cat is everywhere
this video answered a question I've had for a while now
While I did enjoy this video, I didn't find the title applicable. This is not the "meaning of life" that we would ascribe to our lives, which is ultimately what matters. "Contribute to entropy" is not really meaningful on a human scale at all.
InLaymansTerms the video is not about the "meaning" of life... it's about the "purpose" of life. if you read Sean's works, you can see what he thinks about the "meaning of life"(spoilers: there is no meaning but the one we create)
***** I get what you're saying. But I expect a video titled "What is the purpose of life" to live up to that title (and be relevant to the viewer). I think they purposely used this as a misleading title.
They used it purposely, but not to be misleading. The contrast you describe is exactly what they're trying to illustrate, imo. Sean Carroll is the kind of guy who wants you to question the meaning behind even asking "what is the purpose of life?" You take for granted that it's not relevant rather than trying to see the relevance.
I agree with you :) They should change the title to "The Destiny of the Universe"
The meaning of life is not a topic that is within the scope of physics, or even science for that matter.
Its a physics video. You make your own personal meaning to your life as we all do. There is no objective meaning of life that could be applicable on a human scale because of the diversity of our minds, backgrounds, ambitions etc.
Only one problem. İs life possible because of entrpy or its merely a by product of entropic processes.
How can we differentiate life and universe serving entropy and merely doing what they do which just happens to serve entropy.
Life can't not serve entropy. Life doesn't get a free pass on the laws of thermodynamics.
Merely a semantics problem. Change "serving" for "being a conduit for" if you need to remove allusions to a conscious process.
Hakan Karaağaç Yeah I agree. The video said 'Life exists because of entropy, and to increase entropy', but aren't life's entropy-increasing effects just a byproduct?
Flying Swordfish my point exacly.
Hakan Karaağaç Yeah, the way the video is phrased makes it sound like life was created TO speed up entropy. Which sounds incorrect to me.
"Continuing the mission of the stars" should be a bumper sticker.
"what is my purpose?"
