My musical taste has definitely widened/developed since watching your channel. I avoided new music for a long while, got stuck in a rut. You guys gently lead me to the realisation that it was stopping me becoming a better musician. Thanks!
Watching y'all two hang out together and play lines is just so wholesome. Y'all love each other and transmit that respect for each other's playing so wonderfully. Also a big shout-out to whoever is doing the editing. A boring work Skype call is so difficult to get through without stepping on each other and y'all make it look like a natural conversation. Keep up all that y'all are doing.
So glad you got flowers on the list, I stumbled on to this one a little while ago, such a fun bass line! Going to have a dig through some of the other tracks on this list.
@@jasonhansen9 bass lines from j-rock or j-pop (other genres too) are crazy involved. Super fast slap or crazy driving lines, even bass solos are not uncommon in their industry. There’s a lot more fusion elements even in the mainstream stuff over there. But yea, lot of bass features over there.

super fun bass lines for sure, I don't really care for the songs themselves, but I agree there is so much amazing music out there, you just have to look outside of the radio
@regressup off the top of my head I can't think of one Cake song that has a bad bass line. And they had two different basists, but the quality was still there!
Another pop song from the last 5 years with fantastic bass line is Gasoline by Haim. Bass goes off on its own doing a melodic lead during the verses, then brings everything home during the chorus. their live version from their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel during lockdown really lets the bass shine 👌
There have also been a lot of really killer rock and metal bass lines that have come out in the last few years, some of my favourites are Inamorata by Metallica (2023, Rob Trujillo), Call Me Little Sunshine by Ghost (2022, Nameless Ghoul), Cracker Island by Gorillaz (2023, Thundercat), Gasoline and Own My Mind from Måneskin (2023, Victoria De Angelis) and The Dying Song (Time to Sing) and Yen from Slipknot (2022, Alessandro Venturella)
I just said yoasobi on someone else’s comment about finding some crazy Japanese bands haha so good. And I always end up laughing and smiling at how happy the lyrics are. Especially in like adventure
Bout time hiatus kaiyote got a mention on this channel, bender is a phenomenal current bass player and think they deserve a deep dive, would love to see more current music being explored, all the other content is great but it's starting to get rehashed quite a bit, loved your interviews with nick campbell and Tim lefebvre and think they could be explored more as artists, also if your loving hiatus Sharon check out fieh from Sweden and shebad from America 2 other great jazz/funk neo soul bands on the come up ❤
Thanks Shaz & lan, some cool tunes & playing indeed ! I need to catch up ! I should turn my radio on again, although the last time l did was during Covid, when some bright spark called in to ask if you could catch Covid whilst performing a BJ ?! (Sorry hope that's not too rude, although it might well explain my path to curmudgeoness 😂).
Honestly one of my biggest peeves when you hear people talking about how they don’t make good music anymore Like what are you listening to lol Turn off the radio and go find good music yourself It’s like everyone expects all the good stuff to be handed to them freely with no efforts!
There is something about the selections that you've picked (pun intended) out that are SOOOO click-track intensive. I don't know the songs well enough, so I may be way off bass (ha) here, but I feel like the grooves don't have any swing... Like there's just something missing to me that makes it not human. Maybe I'm just a curmudgeon. 🙂
I think you can add Clara Luciani in your list. Several bass lines, played by Pierre Elgrishi are gorgeous and so effective in their song! ua-cam.com/video/uWH00ehhLP8/v-deo.htmlsi=nYZRNCFjZ3q77FXW
Unrelated... I still want you to review "Firewater" by Jimsaku (Tetsuo Sakurai on 6 string bass) ua-cam.com/video/I7K2mijjPBg/v-deo.htmlsi=rbli7QaCGZwTNA_7
Right ok. But these are all pop bass lines. In the 90's the genres were better. So far a bunch of simple groove lines..no claypool or flea or anything ground breaking.

Shiny Wooper! LOL Sharon is such a great addition to SBL. Love you guys!
Finally Hiatus Kaiyote ❤ please do a full video on them 🙏

11:25 that fill.... Damn!! 🔥🔥🔥
Not pop music at core, but every now and then Kinga Głyk puts out essentially an easy bop tune and of course the bass is always sublime!
So much great bass on Khruangbin's music.
Just listen to Japanese basslines from the last 5 months and you’ll understand that we don’t need saviors
I don’t really want to search that so who do you mean exactly?

Song recs?
Ian plays everything with the GREATEST precision and FEEL! And acts in such a humble way! He is PRO!
Old white guy bassist here. You two have me totally woodshedding on the bass again. Thanks for the inspiration. You two together = awesome.
super fun bass lines for sure, I don't really care for the songs themselves, but I agree there is so much amazing music out there, you just have to look outside of the radio
quick mention to check out from 2024, Square Grouper from Electric Kif, super funky
Thank you for introducing me to SILK SONIC!!! Thank you!!
Love the Cake mention...dig that band and wow some great bass lines!
ive always thought I could probably play nothing but cake songs and be happy as a bassist lol
@regressup off the top of my head I can't think of one Cake song that has a bad bass line. And they had two different basists, but the quality was still there!
As always. Thank you for making the pdf s. You guys are awesome. I might join next year for the school..
Im grooving soooooo hard everytime i hear you guys playing! You made this (not that great day…) a bit better for me❤️
More of these please baysir and baysister. I need more new music to discover and this was right up my strada.
Your videos are so damned entertaining and inspiring. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
You missed everything Louis Cole has done in the last 5 years!
We need to do an entire Louis Cole vid
Like Clown Core
Oh yeah!
I am so inspired by the new music that came out after all the shedding going on during the BIG C music is on a whole new level now!
Is the Spacehog In the Mean Time video idea still a thing? Really excited about the idea
I second and third that!
Google lens will not tell me what specific Fender Jazz bass Sharon is playing! Any ideas?
I'm playing a '93 Fender Jazz Plus!
@@sharonrenold When's the solo album coming out?
I recommend checking out Telula, great band
Pop music has been really strong the last few years imo bc artists are actually using musicians again.
Keeping with the 2024 theme, Mononeon's Jelly Roll is a completely bonkers bassline.
The Korg Pandora PX4B has a built-in synth simulation. It came out 20+ years ago, but it Seriously is a GREAT practice tool for it's size.
Miley Cyrus's Flowers is a banger! I unironically cover that tune in my band, it's fun as heck!
Ian, I see the Way Huge Atreides behind you, please make us a demo :D
J pop music like Yoasobi / Ado or Kick back by Kenshi Yonezu have some hella sick bass line
I just said yoasobi on someone else’s comment about finding some crazy Japanese bands haha so good. And I always end up laughing and smiling at how happy the lyrics are. Especially in like adventure

I would love to recommend music by Parcels, Noah Hill is such an amazing player!
Shoutout badbadnotgood underappreciated jazz band

WE NEED THAT PAUL BENDER VIDEO!!!
Commenting because Im never here this early.
Chappel roan's naked in Manhatten has a crazy good slap bass line on the chorus
"Bringing back" is one way you might describe what Rodrigo is doing - others might say "ripping off"
Great vid!
I WANT TO POINT OUT SOMETHING THOUGH
In the description, you guys have put "SUPERSONIC" instead of "SILK SONIC"
Oh thanks for catching that! Fixed!
Nice to see Sharon busting out some chops.
Check out Cò Shu Nie, their basslines are really good!
Does anyone know where I can find the tabs to these basslines?
Please share your HX Stomp patches!
I know we're doing pop here, but nothing from KNOWER FOREVER is criminal
Bloody Mary - Lady Gaga really nice synt bass.
I think i need an HX stomp
Next try…….. Grave- Summer Walker
I would love y'all to check out mononeon's work with the band "Knower"
The band for fly like me is "Silk Sonic" not "Supersonic"

Always fun and interesting to watch you guys, but those tunes are pretty uninspiring...new music pretty much blows. (Feelin' ollllllldddd)
Track #1: How could you think that’s Thundercat?! This Dude slaps twice a year if at all. 😂
The bass might be great in these songs but unfortunately it's the rest of the tune let them down.
And sure you don't know who were the Thundercats
No thank you. I'll just keep playing the old stuff. So much better.
Right ok. But these are all pop bass lines. In the 90's the genres were better. So far a bunch of simple groove lines..no claypool or flea or anything ground breaking.
