Man, it is so nice to have this occasional, classic Total War content.
The guy chose small unit scale though, lol
He's playing Rome original, he might need to play on small to run the game lmao
@@zonkrt3463 personally, I never had trouble running OG rome and it doesn't play into Legend's OBS issues since unit scale is fixed when the campaign is launched.
Guy might be trying to compensate for the poor pathfinding. I love Rome, but getting large units to go where you want them in a seige can be frustrating. Smaller units have less trouble figuring out where to go.
@@MartynWilkinson45 true, that could be it
Maybe they were running it on a period accurate computer
You deleted RTW? You are no true legend.
Ooooo, not even the remaster, very cool.
Yeah Rome feels so fast compared to the likes of Medieval 2 that you know you have some time to grind away for a bit in Rome you can blink and your boys are on the run/half wiped out.
I forgot how fast-paced and high stakes the battles in Rome TW were.. Incredible
Was just playing Attila recently. Then I realized that Medieval 2 was 10 times better and started a new campaign. My nostalgia didn’t let me down this time.
@@bladfadsfblaadsfsadf900 medieval 2 was better, but attila was more good
@@черепахаестклубничку what?
That’s why medieval 1212 Ad is the perfect nix
@@черепахаестклубничку how does that makes sense ? And attila was not more good, limited armies, limited building slots, you cannot move units without general, modability is pushed to brink of non existence. All these things change gameplay drastically, and every newer total war game is far inferior to likes of medieval 2 or rome 1.
I really appreciate the bigger variety on the channel lately, great video as usual, and cheers!
I missed watching Rome Total War on this channel.
Same! This is the content that got me into this channel.
You can rename cities just like in medieval 2, you just have to enable it in a config file called preferences in the preferences folder, its at the very last line of text, just set it as EDIT_SETTLEMENT_NAMES:TRUE
True words.
This makes it go from being names you cant read because they dont exist to names you cant read because they arent in your alphabet.
What a time to be alive.
Can you do it to characters? Want to rename my leaders since I never remember them who’s my dictator. 😅
@@liammorris1018says u gotta change it in the game files, google how to do it
A Rome Total War disaster video? Poggers
This was the least disasterous battke tho. Looked like a typical tw battle
@@hannibalburgers477 I'll take what I can get honestly! 😂
18:08 imagine if we had the game AI technology nowadays to make it so infantry would reorganize back into a line before they come at you
This is a blast from the past, always a pleasure to see an older Total War game!
Man I miss so much when tactics matter in battle
Currently playing the Remaster for the first time. The nostalgia is strong with this one; RTW was my first TW game and I loved it. I accidentally left my first game on Normal unit size I think, and yeah generals were dying left and right on the charge. After I restarted the campaign on Ultra, it made a huge difference. I haven't had one die yet. It must be something with the damage calculation on the charge so as long as the general's model is in the back, you're fine.
Does it allow multiplayer campaigns?
It has hotseat capabilities which requires you te mail the file between one another@@Jmotta05
Loved this, I could have happily watched another 3 or 4 turns. I get that you can only cover what is sent in but it would be great to see more Rome content.
*sigh* If you'll excuse me, I'm now off to start a Brutii campaign for the 76th time.
It was more of a disaster battle rather than a disaster campaign. To go for Rome after ten turns takes some serious balls given that Rome's army is the strongest one you will encounter (Egyptian crap stacks are a close second). To do so with the 'wrong' units is even worse, since Iberian infantry is incredibly weak (the massed assault in the last siege coupled with general's support is the exception). Fortunately cavalry concentrations will win you battles, even when there is no advantage on paper
Cav used to be so fun
Yes it did
Yoooo, I never knew the general entity actually stops to blow his horn. That is wild. 34:49
Classic strategy to stop your general dying in a charge is to blow the horn so he stops while the rest of the unit crash in.
In VH/VH is a must to do, unless you want him dead.
Had Rome 1 on three disks back in the day, still one of my top games of all time.
But regarding the battle, it's oddly historically accurate. Nearly every battle where Carthage was able gain cavalry superiority, they absolutely crushed Roman forces. It's interesting to look back and see how decisive the tactical choices are in this game, and how immediate the results are.
I remember how awesome the barbarian invasion expansion was, with night battles and all the men holding torches!
The aesthetics and audio of the classic total wars isn't beat today.
Man, a modern, historical total war game, like, a good one, would be amazing
2:00 If you put the control group into the "line" formation it functions as an unlocked control group. (Just think of the hot keys as "Shift 1" rather than "CTRL G")
WHAT?! Legend doing OG total wars again? Man i learn this game from you many years ago. Only reasons i didint unfollow you was the respect i had to the dude in the past. I am glad to see abondened content again in the channel!
On charging with generals; If you use the rally ability (only for the commanding General) the guy himself stops while the rest of his unit still moves.
That was a real elephant masterclass. Even with cycle charging I didn't think they could survive that many direct clashes
Not sure it's the right niche but if anyone's brutally interested in ancient warfare I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series. Albeit he's a PhD in Medieval warfare he rocks antiquity pretty hard as much as having been a TW modder
04:00 It's amazing that the AI foot soldiers did not try to throw their javelins at your missile cavalry.
Its the ancient ai, the remastered one would had not ignored it and spray his numidian cavalry
In Rome total war there is a long delay for the javelin throw animation. They need to Halt (entire unit stops), bring the Javelin/Pila up, then throw. The animation is so long skirmishing with them is quite bad.
Its so nice to see the occasional classic total war videos. I do really wish that CA at least fixed up the classic edition of rome (though knowing how they are today that is sadly unlikely) performance wise for modern systems at the very least, theres a ton of really damn good mods that are likely going to go to waste that are likely never going to be ported to the remaster.
Thats is what the remaster is for
@@paulrasmussen8953 As I already mentioned, there are countless mods that have yet to and likely will never be ported over to the remaster due to the original devs of said mods simply not being around anymore more to properly do it, hence why I would like the performance issues with the original fixed rather than the remaster fully replacing it. Plus I prefer the original over the remaster for various reasons that I won't fully get into less we'll be here all day.
Plus the ones that are usually ported over by people who are not the original creators/devs often do it a very hastily/lazily/bad job of it (See the remaster mod port of EB1).
Really glad to see you cover some classic total war comment. I love warhammer but its nice to have a change of pace and see the old stalwarts back in action
Man id be so down to sponsor more rtw content from you
There's an interesting bug in this game. By save scumming you can avoid generals dying of old age. If they reach 256 years old, their age resets to 0 and from then on their death does not trigger anymore from old age.
I wish I still had the save game to send you.
Its awesome to see the OG Rome on the channel. This is the game that first got me into the TW games so very long ago.
They even have a very decent mobile version of this game and Medival 2 now. The only major downsides I found compared to the OG PC version were how quickly it drains your battery (lol) and that you sadly cannot drag units into your prefferred order. What I mean is that if a unit has 3 ranks, it will always have 3 ranks, because you can neither increase or decrease the width of a unit (which is actually a kind of a nerf for phalanx units). At the same time this means you can only place a unit in a certain direction, based on from where they have moved from to the new position. Thus you might find your self having to draw ziczacs movement orders. The last point is more of an inconvenience tho, as you can simply use the pause button to increase your presicion concerning the units facing direction.
OH YEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Been binging all the old Rome 1 vids, so glad there's a new one
After all those years, this music still hits right in the feels
Omg yes!
Love when you cover the old games! I’ve only started my total war journey and I wonder if you would ever do a sort of tutorial for the various TW systems since they are all a little different.
22:24 It's not that it's not responsive. It's because you did a simple click instead of a double-click, therefore before charging they are walking (giving you the impression of low response). You do this quite a few times during the video. I also experienced this coming back to Rome 1 after playing other games, the double-click sensitivity seems "odd" sometimes. It also depends on the mouse, in my experience. Anyway, I'm 100% sure that's what happened.
If you want to manage settlements, you actually saw it in the game settings. There was a box you could check that said "manage all settlements"
I think there was an option when you start a game where you tell him to automatically manage settlements with no generals in
but you can turn that on/off during the campaign anytime in options@@hammamioussama707 Legend haven't played RTW for so long that he forgot :)))))
Missed this, great video! Thank you.
Save the OBS settings, hopefully we get more of this!
How can anyone not love Rome TW
Great to see you playing Total War again instead of Warhammer
Battles like this is where Total War really shines. Those hard but fair battles where you can't pure cheese but can consistently outmaneuver and outsmart the AI, that's what Total War should have more of.
Really nice to see some RTW content
Brings you back to his old content :D
When you charge with a general, you can stop them dying on the charge by hitting the "rally troops" button which makes the general hang back
A lot of fun watching you cover some OG Rome total war! Love it when you go back to the older titles ❤
A Rome Total War disaster?! THE SENATE APPROVES!!
Hey Legend, my brother and I loved your Rome Total War videos. I was so thrilled to see you put out a new one after so long, here's hoping you put out one every now and then. I heard you got burnt out on it, and I understand completely.
I found it a bit annyoing that the strat of killing of SPQR/Senate wouldnt trigger the other roman factions to decend to an early civil war, had been such a huge relief as a non-roman faction :P
Nearly 20 years old and this game will forever be better than Pharaoh.
As an old fan of the EB, Stainless Steel and Roleplay campaigns it's always so sweet to see you back on the older games. I get it's not easy to record, so thanks for putting in the effort!
Love, love, LOVE, R:TW!!! Used to always play Carthage or Selucid Empire, elephants all the way!
After watching this video I purchased the Remastered Rome Total War. Found a 60% discounted copy on Kinguin. I spent so much time of my teen years playing the original Rome Total War. Can't wait to relive some of those memories playing the Greeks or Egypt : D
#1 Soundtrack for Total War
The soundtrack made me tearup. Old neurons activated. Happy chemicals started flowing.
nice to see something other than warhammer 3. thanks for the video
This will always be my favorite Total War. All of the rest just feel like downgrades.
Medieval is pretty good too
Med 2?
Nah bro, Med 2 is the same game but better. And even Med 2 didn’t age very well.
I just finished watching your Wrath of Sparta campaign and currently watching Caesar in Gaul. Is there any way you could ditch Warhammer for once and return back to those games for livestream campaign? I missed those good old Rome 2/Attila playthroughs :-/
Units! Double time!
How can you play this game on modern hardware with such good fps?! I get like 20 no matter what i do.
This strategy children is called defeating your enemy "in detail."
Oh man this first battle was amazing XD what a lord snipe from the jav cav
The game that made me a gamer. It was nice to see you play it.
Instead of charging the romans in the back and routing them he claims it is a lost cause. But just a few seconds later he seems to realize that the infantry are not pyjama warriors and that they can hold on for a bit. Sorry but this is a Legend of Total War no more.
Legend maybe I'm wrong here but it almost sounded like you were enjoying a Total War game again.
Oh god damn the nostalgia right now!!!! Been so long since I've seen Rome total war! You truly are a legend!!!
Amazing micro with the elephants
Just me copying his strategy my only strategy is to head to head the melee units and Use horse to flank nothing more hahaha.
I get a sense of "Just one more turn......" 🤣
Forgot how bloody fun to watch Rome Total War battles are
Intresting, it seems like the units aer much more responsive and there movement looks more natural as in the rest of the total war titeles i have seen
It's weird seeing infantry getting knocked over and actually staying down.
Roma u ko you dead Rome total war gold edition in AD a HD Attacks Red show.
Oh, the nostalgia. Loved seeing a Rome video here! I must have sunk hundreds of hours into Rome back in the day, and this brought me right back. Love the Warhammer stuff, but getting these historical disaster campaigns as a palate cleanser from time to time is great.
Great seeing new RomeTW and medieval 2 videos. Please do more!!
Brings back memorys
What a blast from the past!
I remember being most impressed with the music on RTW!
UNİTS !
ᵈᵒᵘᵇˡᵉ ᵗᶦᵐᵉ
That soundtrack though
I really wish that some company made something similar to warhammer total war with beasts and whatnot, but instead of the stupid graphics/engine that CA made it was an improved version of this RTW engine. This engine can be so easily modified I think modders fixed the charge to rear issues so that cavalry doesn't just bunch up in the front after charging in wedge formation and actually goes through. Or maybe that was in medieval 2? Either way, lesser but stylized graphics but great engine mechanics would be awesome!
Compare AI from 19 years old game and from WH3...
Though I get where u are coming from, I can't say it's completely worse. If you try to snipe a general in Wh3 they will attack you or send other units to shoot at you, in this game they just kept marching as he shot them. If he had more ammo the main general wouldve been killed toowith minimum effort. As for the rest of it, the AI is similar. They split off into little isolated units and try to cover every potential threat at once instead of crushing your static troops first then turning to face the rest .
Fun latin facts- "Velites" has several misleading letters, as its pronounced "well-it-ays"
There is no soft C in latin so it always makes a K sound. So Cicero? He's actually Kickero. Incredibly ironic since Italian is the language prettymuch made entirely of soft c's.
Italian is the language prettymuch made entirely of soft c's..... ahahahah , what a bullshit!
OG Rome is the best
I remember as a young Irishman playing Rome 1 in Spring Hill in Brisbane circa 2009-2010 and having the time of my life in many ways. That time and this game will always stay in my memory even though I don't live in Brisvegas anymore. Hope the city still serves you well Legend!
TIL Legend is Australian.
@@PwnZombieDo you not hear his accent?
the AI seems still better than the warhammer's one
When the enemy camps the town square, I always try to lure them out with ranged units. Those 8 slingers might have been enough to prevent some light infantry casualties.
Currently playing Carthage in VH/VH, well, it's not easy to win battles and when you have settlements bribed. It happened to me countless times. Now, in year 231 I have 30 regions and the romans, Spain and Numidia are no more. Now it's the gauls and then Macedonians or Greece. Egypt will be probably too difficult. Let's see to reach the 50 regions.
Rome total assassinate
Thanks for the nostalgia indulgence. I used many hours of my time playing this game and I appreciate the reminder of simpler times.
This like a breath of fresh air, i always prefered the total war series in historic era's, rather than fantasy era's.
So admitabbly i kinda stopped watching you for YEARS during your total war WARHAMMER phase.
I stopped watching a lot of legends content because tww3 just seems stale. It's good to see some of the older games.
Man the older game lords are like paper compared to warhammer. Forgot how squishy they are. Nice to see some of the classics being covered from time to time.
Seen comments about pharaoh, apparently on a rtx 4090 it's stuttering and poor performance. Also seen lunatics talking about what dlc they want before it's even released. Does this seem like lunacy to you legend?
rome battle ai is better than wh3
The dying general animation was always fun
Wow a Rome 1 video! What year is it?
One of the reason why I love watching LOTW, I hope disaster campaign for the old Total wars.
@LegendOfTotalWar there's a button in the gamesettings called 'manage all settlements' you kinda zoned over it
The real reason why you stopped with historical games is because some snowflake got your video pulled because they can't take having a history lesson.
YOONITS
Legend showing the trolls who say he can only cheese how good he is with tactics.
