  • Are you wanting to master your foiling gybes, or have a go at riding switch stance?
    In this third video in our ‘Wing Foiling Series’ Reuben explains how to successfully get around your foiling gybes, as well as offering some top tips for riding switch stance. Timings, foot and body positioning and board trim are key to success… as well as lots of practice!
    There are lots of beginner vids already out there telling you the basics of Winging & Wing Foiling. Our videos will be focussing on what appear to be the main stumbling blocks. So whether you’re totally new to Wing Foiling and yet to hit the water, or you’ve already committed and got your own gear but are struggling… we hope these videos will be useful.
    Part 1 - The foil… How it works under your feet and how to control it when you start to fly!
    Part 2 - Getting flying and staying flying in lighter winds
    Part 3 - Foiling gybes and going switch stance

    tip from years of mountain bike coaching, brought into wing: don't think about foot pressure when initiating the turn, start higher up - with your vision (look to the exit of the turn), shoulders (rotate towards that exit) body (low and twisting round) ...this naturally and smoothly applies both inside pressure and front foot pressure, to stop you stalling and to initiate a super smooth turn with speed maintained

    I’d like to add 1 point “underhand grip” on entering gybe

    Howdy from Texas! I've watched quite a few gybe lesson videos and this one is tops! The instructions are clear and the example clips are very good. Time to go practice on the lawn (low wind today). lol

      So what do you call it when you actually switch feet? Heelside vs toe side makes a lot more sense in traditional board riding sports.

      The transition is called switch stance/foot. Heelside or toe side, goofy or regular, frontside or backside. Lots of names. Thanks.

      Just to let you know, within an hour of first watching this video, I actually achieved my first proper turns and managed to ride out switch stance ( for a few metres🤦). As usual the sense of achievement for the next bit of progression was great. Still need a lot more practice though.....

    I missed the part about switching with footstraps, but how could that be so different, right? I hit about a third of my gybes while foiling, because I'm heavy and use the smallest possible sail. So I come down a lot. Thanks for the tips. Phenomenal video.

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Рік тому

      Hi Noah, yes switching with foot straps is virtually the same the only thing I do is take my front foot out and it's strap slightly and rotate my heel towards the centreline of the board and then take my back foot strap out completely and placed my foot on top of the foot strap slightly towards the rail I'm going to carving onto. Doing this allows me then to switch my feet quicker because my feet are further away from the straps. make sense? Thanks Reuben

    Correction: switch stance is exactly that, when you DO switch your feet. When you don't switch your stance that's called going toeside after your jibe. (riding switch means your weak foot is opposite from normal - goofy= right foot forward, regular = left foot forward )

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Рік тому

      You correct, TBH we have applied it across from the windsurfing sport because the move is very much the same, when you ride switch out of a gybe. But yes you are riding toe side also. Anyway hope the video help apart from that. lol Thanks Reuben

    Great video, I have struggled with gybes continually falling on the inside, I enter with speed but can't seem to work out why I fail so many. I did move forward from a 2000cmsq to a 1450, do you think I should go back to the bigger foil? Thanks in advance

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  2 роки тому

      Hi Andy, absolutely if you go on a bigger foil your gybes will become easier. Another thing which can make a massive difference is your fuselage length and your rear tail wing size also. I think if you jump back to your bigger foil you will notice a massive difference. And definitely the one to master your gybes on. Hope this helps thanks Reuben

  • @nfinnigan
    @nfinnigan Рік тому

    Would you say it's going to be easier trying to jibes on a starboard X foil board that's used for wind and wing foiling 145 ltr 10.5kg board, and getting the Starboard wing 6.3 board that's 8.5kg weight and 115ltr, my own weight is 97kg. Thanks

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Рік тому +1

      The easiest board will be the one with the least amount of swing weight out in front of you. So really the smallest and lightest board you can get away with riding. the 6.3 will be a better board to progress with. But it also depends on what it's like for you to stand on a flat water when not on the foil. thanks Reuben

      @@SUPboardermag Thanks Reuben for your reply and advice, I think it might take me 10 years before I get a smaller board shorter than 6 feet long, LOL. Cheers, Nick

    great video! How many times have you tried until you got your first full gybe and flying? just to know how bad I am! 😂

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  Рік тому +1

      Hey, Making a gybe and switching feet is very hard but it is much easier with a nice stable foil on flat water conditions. It took me a good 20 goes before I nailed my first one but even now if Im on a small unstable foil I wont make my gybe by switching my feet.
      But I have been surf foiling a lot before so I wouldn't feel bad if you end up needing to do it 100 times before the first one is nailed. Remember foil setup makes a massive difference! thanks Reuben

  • @skreebop
    @skreebop 2 роки тому +1

    I've been trying my gybes but the best I've managed is 3/4 on foil and then taxi for the remainder. It feels like juggling as it looks easy once you master it, but getting to that point is a process. Practice has to be the key, as you stated. I'm just hoping it 'clicks' like it did for the foiling part.
    I'm not sure if you've done a video like this already Reuben, but any thought to covering the pros and cons of upgrading equipment once you get comfortable with the basics (gybes and tacks, etc.)? My current set up is definitely geared towards learning (floatier board and low aspect foil), but seems like the more experienced you are, everything shrinks. Having had the wind die on me a few times, I dread to think if I was stuck with a 30-40L board, however. What do you enjoy riding most? (conditions permitting)
    Thanks and cheers!

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  2 роки тому +1

      Hey - glad your foiling is getting there and don't worry, eventually these things do click. It takes a while for the brain to get the juggling all the skills right, but it will come. Keep trying!
      Thats. a good idea for a video - taken note - certainly there is a lot of pressure to upgrade from all the marketing, but if you do it too early before the basics are mastered and the foundations are not solid I think it prevents progression. We stayed on our lower aspect gear and large boards for almost 2 years to really get the basics sorted and I think it paid off. When it comes to small gear... well, we still use boards with 10-15 litres positive buoyancy because this is what originally drew us to the sport. Light wind performance, no worry if the wind dies and the gear is still super small compared to windsurfing kit, so it still feels great. Sure a tiny board feels great, but it makes the enjoyment bracket smaller and therefore the sport less accessible! I love that I can foil in 15 knots but also on the same gear at 30! We also like to cross over our wing foiling boards and foils for the surf SUPing too, so we are always looking for equal or positive buoyancy there!
      Cheers, Will (Reuben is on holiday for a few weeks ;) )

      @@SUPboardermag Thank you Will! Those are some great insights. It's always helpful to hear from people who are further down the path. All in all, I'm having fun (especially now that I can foil upwind) which is the important bit. I do try to enjoy the process and challenge myself every session in the hope I'm actually learning something, despite the aches and bruises. At the very least it's decent exercise.👍

    Very good tutorial. The only thing is you are identifying toeside as switch, which will confuse a lot of newbies.
    Switch stance is changing your forward foot from goofy to regular or vice versa NOT riding toeside.
    Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.. misnamung tricks or terms in wake kite wing or foil.
