Genius, how he is not revered in his home country still astounds me, but he is a national treasure in the UK

What a genius your father was. I’m 72 years old and clearly remember watching Bilko on sleepovers at my Grandparents house in the mid to late 50’s ~ early 60’s. Phil was an exceptionally gifted man with brilliant comic timing. I now watch those shows in my 70’s and they are just as entertaining as they where back in my formative years.

What a great interview. His daughter's comments on her father's take on Sgt. Bilko were absolutely spot on.

Your Pa. was my No. 1 hero way back then. His mental agility/delivery speed was second to none, almost equalled only by 'our' Leonard "Reggie Perrin" Rossiter/David Nobbs writer fifteen + years later. And the fact that 'Bilko' holds up so well is an amazing testament to 'Oinie' & Nat Hiken. Unforgettable genius all round.

Phil Silvers was a great comedian and probably had the best timing ever. The Phil Silvers show is my favorite because not only was Phil hilarious, but the supporting cast was great and "in" on the joke. I think the only show that can hold a candle to Bilko is Seinfeld.

The character Bilko got its name from a heavy set slugging first baseman named Steve Bilko. Bilko played sporadically in the major leagues (Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Reds, Tigers, Angels) from 1949 through 1962, but became part of baseball lore based on his minor league exploits. In the years 1955 through 1957, playing for the Pacific Coast League Los Angeles Angels in the band box Wrigley Field, he hit home run totals of 37, 55, and 56,

My father was the first person to be permoted to Sergeant Major when the rank came back after WWII and he loved the show. My father never said, but it appeared to me that there was a lot of truth in the show on how to get things done in the army. They don't make great shows likes this anymore.

My Father was a sgt major at the end of his 17 year Army career. He loved Bilko & we had to stop everything when it was on & we’re not allowed to interrupt his favorite show & he told me he knew Bilko types in the Army. He was a very good pinochle player and would make money at it at the NCO club. Phillipines, Pearl Harbor, North Africa, D Day, 3rd Army, Bulge, German occupation, Korea, recalled during Cuban missle crisis where we came within 15 minutes of nuclear war. He was a soldier and a damned good cook and later chef.

One thing about the character Bilko....when it came to, he always stopped short of hurting someone, physically and emotionally. Hiken never allowed his creation to step over the greedy line....THAT'S what made Bilko lovable, affable and irresistable.

Gotta love Phil Silvers. On Gilligan's Island and many other shows. Even his daughter was on Happy Days with her dad. Hiken was great. Car 54 and common actors on The Munsters.

Sgt Bilko had his moments of charity but he would rip off his platoon, other non commission officers and manipulate Col. Hall . Indeed he was a lovable conman, You cheer for the bad buy sometimes. He was unique in all the other situational comedies. First all Nat Hiken was very very funny and he had a great tool with Phil Silvers to deliver the lines. On the down side it typecasted Phil Silvers ie. Mad, Mad Mad World movie etc. It stands out as the best of Old time TV.

I'm bummed that I can't get this show (or Bewitched, or Jack Benny etc.) or Car 54 in restored HD anywhere; unless I was just looking in the wrong places. I would think there'd be more of an outcry for older shows on bluray, but I guess a lot of people like watching older shows in SD and with their warbled audio.

I agree with Phil daughters.."Sgt.Ernie Bilko"(Phil's character)was always willing to help out his men..I remember one show..where one of his men..who was going to inheirit a fortune was being cheated out of his share of his estate..and "Bilko"found a way of getting back at these dirty crooks..so that this poor sad schnook..would get his estate back and the villains..would get theirs at the hands of the law.
