Why would someone buy a "fun" car without the most fun transmission? If 0-60 time is your key reason to get the DCT over the manual, there are faster cars for the same price. Driver engagement and fun is the key for a car like this, not 0-60 time. Still impressive to have a real DCT on such an inexpensive car.
As a car freak and i30 N perf owner i was a bit disappointed concerning actual boost, even though they state 2.2 bar absolute pressure and i only drive on Ultimate 102, the data logger rarely surpasses the 2.0 absolute pressure aka 1.0 boost even in overboost. Will engage in further investigations. Air temp and conditions were always optimal for the tests and made 300m over sea level.
Slush boxes are only on older cars now, and not typical for new cars. The current automatics just use the torque converter to get rolling, then immediately lock up the torque converter with a heavy duty dry clutch, acting like a manual with automatic quick shifts. Check Jason's episode on the new automatics.

The only issue I had was that there was a rattling coming from the rear view mirror (something was broken inside). The dealer was able to fix it without an issue though. Overall I am very happy with mine. :D
Exactly my thoughts, wondering will it last as long or be capable of as much mileage as a Toyota, Volvo, Old Mercedes for example. You know, stuff made out of volcanic rock.
Too bad most German premium cars already went back to torque converter transmissions. Tbh, for most applications a good ZF auto transmission is just the better choice. BUT, for sporty driving there is no doubt that DCT is the most fun, right after mt
@@flowjob3813 Yeah i know right that kind of sucks but yeah for a lower end german sports car a zf 8 speed is fine but anything RS series or M series should IMO have a dct instead. Hey, Hi Jason, Loving this Hyundai series. Just a feedback, I don't know if you have considered the option of time stamping the video or not, but it would be helpful while rewatching the video to skip to the point where we want to be or even when watching it for the first time.
What is the maintenance schedule for the dual clutch transmission? Every 3 years? How about under heavy usage? How much does the DCT maintenance cost? I was shopping a VW Golf GTI with dual clutch but learned the maintenance was over $1,000 each time, not including replacement parts if needed. Bravo to Hyundai if they’re doing it better, but I’d insist on seeing the data before buying.

Most of the time I drive old and slow, but I love surprising people and that powershift is almost too much fun. 100K mile factory warranty on the driveline. I plan on getting something else before the warranty runs out. I'm not paying that repair bill for two new clutches. lol.
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start and I've changed out the spoiler N and I've tested drive the veloster N with a six speed manual transmission it's fast and thanks for sharing your videos with me 👋👍🙂♥️
Cool concept. Now can you flash it to make more of a boost from the button? Like press the button and get 20 seconds of 300hp/340tq. That's what I want to know
I mean you'd lost the warranty but I don't see why not if you find someone competent willing to map it. The engine is kind of detuned from factory from what I've seen
@@juanordonezgalban2278 Well, you lose your warranty because you have the risk of losing the engine itself. The engine is rated to 260, maybe 280 for short period, because that’s where it has good reliability, and not above that. There are cases where they accidentally overbuilt the engine, and it can handle much more with ease, but we will not know it until a few hundred tuners have tried it.
I have to say that "N power shift" "technology" is pretty funny... not cutting engine power during shifts is how every automatic transmission worked until DBW engines came along. And re launching on a DCT vs. traditional manual transmission, what you say about the "abuse tolerance" of single-plate dry vs. multi-plate wet clutches makes sense, but consider that replacing a traditional clutch is a whole lot easier and cheaper than rebuilding the clutches on a DCT.
Hyundai does some...interesting....things with their transmissions. Not always for the better. The 6-spd conventional automatic in my 18 Elantra seems to electronically reduce throttle during gear transitions, I assume to reduce wear on the clutch packs and perhaps smooth the shifting.
They also have a ton of lag in the manuals as well, heel-toe shifting is pretty much impossible, the throttle is electronic and doesn't let you get too aggressive.. I had a 15 forte with the 2.0 and a 6MT and ran into this issue often.
@@ThatOddGarage I hate electronically controlled throttles. They often don't feel like they're calibrated accurately and give an artificial feeling. I think they are one of the worst automotive technologies made commonplace in car over the last 20yrs.
Been looking into turbo compound engines lately, I'm kind of baffled as to why they aren't used in passenger cars, seems like a straightforward way to increase specific output and efficiency.
Such a shame the Veloster N isn't available in Europe. I love the 1 door on driver's side and 2 doors on passenger side. But the older model has a weird back side.
But what are the preselected shift points for this "N Track Sense Shift" DCT, on a 0-60 run or on the Nuremberg track, going from s tight corner to a long Optimum shift points was discussed in a prior video. Do those rules apply here Jason?
Any chance we could get a video about turbo surge/the flutter sound and if it's bad for your car or not? The difference between off throttle and on throttle surge? There is a lot of disagreement and I would trust your opinion Thanks

J .. Happy Christmas to you and yours. I wonder if you'd consider doing a video on why most manufacturers seem reluctant to build a diesel hybrid. (Merc build a full diesel hybrid in Europe while Audi build a mild hybrid). Shouldn't it be more prevalent considering that it may be the next step in truck engines ? (rather than going directly to electric). A Euro 6 diesel with SCR is just as clean as a petrol engine and is far more fuel efficient.
Good informative video. But as a KDM fan I truly hate it when youtubers get paid lots of cash to promote Hyundai instead of speaking facts or expressing genuine opinions.
I've been driving electric cars since 2015 (no not a Tesla) and they have everything I love about driving.. (except range and the cool engine noise) instant torque power .
In nearly half of century of driving I never went without at least one MT vehicle in my garage until I bought a DCT GTI in 2013. When I replaced it in 2018 with a MK7 GTI I didn't hesitate to go with a DCT again. I'd still choose a manual transmission Miata simply for the heritage in a pure sports car with limited power but otherwise I'd never go back to a manual transmission vehicle. No more than I'd return to a car without power assisted steering or fuel injection.
They did that second run down two cylinders because of spark plug failure. And at half track length. Not trying to defend. They ARE liars. But gotta inform. Merry Christmas
It should also be noted that GOOD automatics ALSO give a surge of acceleration during a shift, for the same reason the DCTs do. But the torque converter converts some of the brief large drop in speed across it into a greater surge of torque. Remember GOOD automatics? Pre-electronic, American automatics with a shift kit, that kick you in the butt when they shift!
n=Not a fan of the Veloster looks, but I cant wait for the Elantra N. The prototype vids show an amazing vehicle that far exceeds anything in that segment including the Civic Type R that was designed by an 18 year old version of myself.

I currently have Production Number 48 of the 800 2019 KIA Stinger GTS models with Drift mode. I cant wait to take delivery of the N DCT. Again Your Breakdown for the vehicles operation systems was amazing...
Thank you, definitely the best explained video on the true differences of both transmissions. As many of them that I have watch, you got it. New subscriber for sure..
DCT’s are lots of fun. Not a manual, but a hell of a lot more fun than a typical slush box.
Slush boxes are only on older cars now, and not typical for new cars. The current automatics just use the torque converter to get rolling, then immediately lock up the torque converter with a heavy duty dry clutch, acting like a manual with automatic quick shifts. Check Jason's episode on the new automatics.
I know my man the days of 3 and 4 speed slush boxes are gone. My truck and car are both manual so I think I might get the Elantra N just for the DCT
WOW! This channel has become a advertising agency!
Just picked up mine yesterday and I had to come here to figure out how the damn thing works!
That pale blue paintwork looks much better in real life.
Yep, I didn't like it in videos because it reminded me of the type of blue used for babies toys, but I saw one a couple weeks ago in person and it genuinely looks good.
love Huge cheap plastic grill.
I`m interested in this engine reliability and problems in long term.
ORORORORO!!! I spend half of my day sleeping! ORORORO!!! Then I sometimes get up and tell you that I am a famous content creatorORORORORO!!! Please don't sleep while driving, dear qile
I know it’s not really long term, but I’ve owned my Veloster N (2020 performance pack, should be the same engine as the 2021 model) for a year now (6600 miles) and haven’t had a single issue with engine.
I would like to see how everything holds up reaching 100k miles.
Hyundai still has a 100k mile warranty.
"Only available with .." I'm starting to really dislike those words .. Thanks for the interesting content EE. Merry Christmas everyone.
Great video, and very interesting information about these technologies. Merry Christmas and Happy new Year sir!
Thank you so much, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
6:58 Yeah Jason, that's why you have the BIGGEST GRIN on your face.
Im really glad to see DCT's are becoming the norm outside of german cars.
Lets just be happy that the old typical shitty 5-6 speed torque convert transmissions that feel like they dont have specific gears are long gone
Love my manual 2020 Veloster N but almost wish I would have held out for the DCT!
Hey, Hi Jason, Loving this Hyundai series. Just a feedback, I don't know if you have considered the option of time stamping the video or not, but it would be helpful while rewatching the video to skip to the point where we want to be or even when watching it for the first time.
That guy is not getting enough views, give that man the view he deserves.
I got a 4.9 0-60 using launch control in my dct anD always got 6.1 in my manual
I have a 2019 Kia Soul! Turbo 1.6L with a 7sp DCT.
That's what I want to know
For that, you need to collect the powerups from the road.
@@juzoli I laughed pretty hard at the powerups lol thank you. I still like this button idea. Hoping it gets played with by tuners in the near future.
The crab hand explanation of DCTs is becoming as much a feature of the channel as the whiteboard and I am all for it!
Thanks for your explanation of this vehicle. BTW what's the warranty for this trans and vehicle?
It's about the transmission shifting logic. I like that term.
logically shifting where no transmission has logically shifted before.
You might enjoy learning some German.
@@hanshuber456
logisches Schalten, wenn zuvor kein Getriebe logisch geschaltet hat
But what are the preselected shift points for this "N Track Sense Shift" DCT, on a 0-60 run or on the Nuremberg track, going from s tight corner to a long Optimum shift points was discussed in a prior video. Do those rules apply here Jason?
Any chance we could get a video about turbo surge/the flutter sound and if it's bad for your car or not? The difference between off throttle and on throttle surge? There is a lot of disagreement and I would trust your opinion
Thanks
The manual i30N already has a 20s overboost but it activates automatically under full throttle. "grin shift" (terrible name) seems like a gimmick.
Agree it should of had that torque to begin with with no special button.
I imagine it does give you more driving satisfaction. After all, you will get used to ANY amount of power your engine has. With this, you can trick your brain a little
@@flowjob3813 a smart person is here (not sarcastic)
Yes but you don't have a say when it activates as certain times condition won't be met
Amazing vídeo! I like a lot the way you go to the details on every video! Very good bro! Keep pushing! Only one think,i know you like a lot Cars, etc but you can do some vídeos with motorcycle technology too. So your channel would be even more richet with information and covers more audience. Its just an idea 🙂 Mery Christmas and Happy New Year 😊
Hey im new to this channel and the 1st vid i watched was actually on this same car. Your channel is great and glad i found it 👍👍
Veloster n is such a gem
Its phenomenal. I've ditched my 2018 BMW m4 dct after one test drive 2021 VN dct. It drives so good.
You don’t miss the rear wheel drive feeling?
@@DoctorSkillz this VN dct drives like a rear wheel drive. Only thing I cant do is drifting in rain. Well I still have my manual 2015 scion frs for that. VN dct is just crazy good. I know that on may they r making same car in elantra N with same drive train. And also Kona N w AWD
You really analyzed deeply . Well done!!
Does this button make the car jump over things? Or is it SP mode?
Hyundai is really making some awesome cars that people actually want, no other manufacturer is pumping out so much enthusiast vehicles at once
Hyundai and Kia are making cooler and more reliable cars than Nissan and Honda now
They've come a long way from the cars that I remember from the '80s!
Hiring a bunch of engineers away from Toyota vastly improved their reliability, and fielding works teams in motorsports has definitely translated into more exciting cars on the market.
I'm still disappointed that they won't be selling the Elantra GT (i30) in North America anymore, though.
ehy jason, nice informative video as usual. Can you please tell me the name of your shoes? thanks

A spicy hot fire burning hatch. My kind of car.
I love my 2015 Veloster T I wish I could upgrade to this model :(
EƎ, the best salesperson for DCT's ever
100% awesome technology. Truly some video game type of stuff. I will not, however, give up my MT VN ❤ ever.
No they don't they don't have a manual
@@philspaghet now that would be great.
N line with DCT sound cooool...
I lobe my manual 2020 veloster N performance package, dct looks good but i got a great deal on mine 29500,vs the automatic 4 around 35.000 plus
I hope you can cover in the next video of SSC Tuatara rerun which they hit 252mph far off from their world record of 331mph
Look like they pay pretty penny - you let out both of your cars from the garage? Unbelievable.
Neat, i like all the toys they've put in the veloster N.
Merry Christmas Jason.
Will the boost button charge faster if I drift?
Great Video. U made me want to buy a DCT over a Manual :D
I know right, I'm driving a Veloster 6-speed turbo and it's buckets of fun with great gas mileage. but now I know if I get the N that I'm planning on getting I should go with the dct, this will be a first for me I don't like not shifting but it's so much added performance I gotta do it
What is the this DCT units torque limits? Hope it's a wet clutch setup as the dry clutch units will fail and generally the mechatronics go also as normal of VAG vehicles
Jason, would you please give us metric units as well, when presenting some data?
I want a Veloster N now.
Good job as always! Still would prefer the manual tho
I currently drive a golf R and the Veloster N gets me excited lol

Damn, I wish we had these new veloster Ns in Europe.
We have the i30N. Even If we had both I'd have to go with the i30 because the three door feature is disgusting in my opinion. I have a kia ceed, wich is about the same size as the i30, and I (1,92m) fit confortable in the back seat without a problem, wich I'd doubt would be the case in the veloster
The I30N looks 100x better in my opinion.
