- The late Solomon Burke, who sadly died almost two years ago ... a man who influenced so very many musicians. This is from "Ohne Filter Musik Pur" shown on German tv; backed by Sam Mayfield and the Souls Alive Orchestra Solomon sings a medley including "If you need me" "Tonights the night" "I almost lost my mind" "What am I living for" and"CC Rider"... On this day in 1965 {June 27th} "Tonight's The Night"* by Solomon Burke peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, for the three weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "I Can't Help Myself" by The Four Tops...
It reached #28 on Billboard's Top 100 chart...
Between 1961 and 1978 the Philadelphia native had thirty-one records on the Hot R&B Singles chart, nine made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Got To Get You Off My Mind", for three non-consecutive weeks on March 28th, 1965...
Mr. Burke, born James Solomon McDonald, passed away at the age of 70 on October 10th, 2010...
May he R.I.P.
* "Tonight's The Night" was Solomon Burke's second of two of his records to peak at #2, his other #2 record was "If You Need Me" for five weeks in May of 1963...

I hate to say this. He was an amazing performer and an amazing person even when he wasn't performing. Never have I seen someone who could take a bigger bite out of the gift called life. Trouble was he had no markers to direct him. He ate himself to death.
