When you’re a boy and your mistaken for a girl when ever you play a game so men hit on you then you have to tell them that you’re a boy and it really awkward not talking from personal experience or anything
I did get some weird looks when people found out how much I loved video games, especially ones marketed more towards guys than girls, as I was growing up. Just about any time I told someone about this awesome video game I was playing, I'd be given these looks and people would try to discourage me from having any interests in them. What really upset me was that my brother also played the same video games I did and any time he talked about them people would listen to him and were happy that he enjoyed them so much. My brother and I are very close in age to the point that people often mistook us for twins, so we often played together and shared a lot of the same interests growing up. So having people approve of my brother's love for video games and then scold me for having the same passion was really annoying. It took me a while to figure out that the big difference between my brother and I having the same interests was that I am a girl and he's a guy. Even after learning of this, however, I was really confused as to why boys were allowed to like video games and it was considered strange for a girl to like video games. I did have some video games catered more towards girls than guys, but even talking about those video games made people judgmental about my interests. Had I had the same spunk as I do now, I'd have probably yelled at them for being so mean about me liking video games simply because I'm a girl. I'm really glad that I'm now living in a time where it's far more accepted for girls to enjoy video games than it is for it to be considered a taboo. I'm very open about my interests and love talking about my favorite video games. I've especially grown very fond of the Mystery Dungeon spin-off series in Pokémon after playing one of the game during a very depressing and difficult time in my life. That series literally saved my life and gave me the strength to fight my depression, even reigniting my passion for life and inspiring me to try and make a comic series based on the video games in hopes that they can help other people through their own struggles and life and not give up like how the games helped me. After that experience, I really must strongly argue against the idea that video games are not meant for girls. I now literally owe my life to a video game series and it's made me happier than I had been in a long time. So anyone who dares think that I shouldn't be playing video games simply for being a girl better hope that they don't cross paths with me, because I am ready and willing to scream their ears off to defend my love of video games and prove how they are for everyone.
Hi there. I am so sorry that you had to deal with that all your life. I am a guy and I love it when women play video games just as much, if not more, than men. Even when I was a kid, I had friends, neighbors and family members who were female and loved to play video games. I had a sister who loved to play TMNT 4: Turtles In Time on Super Nintendo with me and our cousins when we were children. Also, I even had female best friends who loved to play Super Smash Bros Melee on GameCube back in our high school days. I guess what I'm trying to say is, good for you for sticking to your guts and defending your love for video games. I never thought it was weird for girls to play video games at all. I have come to notice that, depending on where you live and when you were growing up, the acceptance of girls playing video games vary. Seems like you were lucky enough to grow up in a time and place were it was well accepted. For me, girls weren't particularly banned or anything like that from video games, but we were judged and discouraged a lot for it. I'm just glad that everyone stopped being such idiots about the whole thing and finally let girls have the same kind of fun as guys now. I'm also quite lucky that I managed to find a group that accepted my more "boyish" interests by the time I was in middle school. I made friends with a groups of guys who I ate lunch with almost everyday and they were all really nice. None of them cared that I was a girl (or even that I was the only girl at their table) and treated me with the same amount of respect as they did each other, even encouraging my love of video games. I think that's around the time people finally began to open up to the concept of girls liking more guyish things and became more accepting of it.
@@Midnight3Wonder Hi! I'm so sorry for the extremely late reply! I have been busy with work and been really tired but I'm glad you found your circle of friends to keep your love of video games alive. I have a theory as to why video games were gendered as such. I watched some old Atari 2600 commercials and most of them show the boys being actively into the games with their Atari joysticks and the girls were just...there. Some would show a girl playing Atari but it was mostly if there was a boy playing with her. Others just had girls looking and talking like a Valley Girl. So as you and I could imagine, we've all come a long way from video games being gendered or even "too violent for children" to being more accepted into society. I also noticed something with the Pokemon video games too. In the very beginning, Red and Blue (and in some countries Green) only had a boy Pokemon Trainer. And that was it. There were girl trainers in those games but only as opponents, gym leaders and/or Elite Four. Then at some point, I don't remember which game or generation it was but they started to have girl trainers to play as too. For me, I chose to play as a girl Pokemon Trainer in Sword and Shield. Say what you want about those games but I will say this, playing as a girl made me feel happy because it was different. Plus, even though I'm a man, I wish I was a woman and getting to play as a girl Pokemon Trainer was the best thing I ever felt since playing Samas Aran in the Metroid games. Now I've noticed that other Pokemon fans want the option of Non-Binary Pokemon Trainers too. When I heard about that, I immediately signed a petition to get that going. The Pokemon franchise has really evolved throughout the years (no pun intended) and I feel that adding a gender based diversity would be really great. You see, Pokemon games went from having boy trainers only to boys and girls and even different skin colors and ethnicities too. So having Non-Binary Pokemon Trainers would increase the diversity of Pokemon. As the theme song says and I quote, "you teach me and I'll teach you". That's what Pokemon is all about. I'm sure if you and I were best friends, we'd be talking about our favorite games and/or game franchise or even go to places like E3. For the record, my favorite game franchise of all time is "Sonic The Hedgehog". And with the new movie coming out in another month, I'm super excited to see Sonic and Knuckles fight each other on the big screen. (Dream come true lol) I don't know if you're a big Sonic fan like me but I do love that series. I also love: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Thunder Force, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Kingdom Hearts, Ape Escape, Spyro The Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, The Legend Of Zelda, MarioKart and last but not least, Super Mario Bros. I also recently started to get into Phantasy Star and Streets Of Rage too. If there are other games I forgot to mention, I'm sorry but these were some of my all time favorites. @@Truetransrebel They actually added the female trainer in the third installment game of Gen 2, Pokémon Crystal. So, it was only for Gen 1 and half of Gen 2 where you could only play as a boy. After that, you could easily play as a girl. I started my Pokémon Adventure in Gen 3 with Ruby, choosing Torchic as my Starter with the help of my brother. I was really shy about asking my parents for things I REALLY wanted for Christmas (and my birthday is right next to Christmas, so my Christmas list ended up also being something of Birthday list for me). I had this crazy idea that if you were good enough, Santa could grant ANY wish. So, every year, I'd ask for things like world peace and no more hunger or war and nothing else. I genuinely thought that if I was good enough and didn't ask for anything selfish, my wish for a better world would come true. Silly yet sweet, I know. However, as a result, I always got stuck with dumb girly stuff like fake makeup, fancy clothes, dolls, and other stuff I wasn't actually interested in. I'd have much rather gotten fun video games, toy swords, stuff like that. Though, I wouldn't complain about the Barbie stuff. I still love Barbie to this day. Anyway, I spent most of my childhood not able to get the stuff I actually wanted both due to my silly beliefs and not having the courage to ask my parents for things I worried were too expensive. I wasn't exactly shy about my interests, but I wasn't exactly open about what I wanted either. My brother knew how much I love Pokémon at least. He one day came home with a copy of Pokémon Ruby he got from a friend and I was very jealous of him, but didn't want to demand my own Pokémon game. Luckily, my brother was nice enough to let me play from time to time. The only rules was that I did not save over his game. That was a fair enough rule and I was more than happy with the arrangement. After all, I finally got to play Pokémon, something I've always wanted to do! The only time our rule was broken was when I went exploring in the desert area where you find the fossils and accidentally ran into Latios. I had recently watched the Latias and Latios movie, so I knew this was a very rare and powerful Pokémon. I ran to my brother who, at the time, was playing with his friends and I explained the situation to him. He quickly took back his game and his friends cheered him on to catch it. It ran away. Luckily, it wasn't long after this that we learned about the roaming Pokémon feature and realized he could still catch Latios. It was a lot of fun. Then, one day, my brother came home from school with a copy of Emerald he got from a friend. I don't know if it was the same from or a different friend, but I was really jealous that my brother now had 2 Pokémon games while I still had none. That's when my brother surprised me with one of the sweetest things he has ever done for me. After showing off his new Emerald game to me, he handed me his Ruby game and told me to take good care of it. He was actually giving me his Ruby game so that I could finally have my own Pokémon game! I was so happy that I actually started to cry! He and I started up brand new games together and . . . I got stuck for an hour trying to figure out which Starter I wanted... It was a toss up between Mudkip and Torchic. After finally asking my brother for help, he suggested I choose Torchic as it was a really good Pokémon and actually his very first Pokémon. I ended up following in my brother's footsteps when we began our journey! Now, despite having a late start, I'm miles ahead of my brother as a Trainer and have quite the collection of Pokemon! Other games I love are Sonic the Hedgehog, Rune Factory, NiGHTS, Digimon, Thrill Ville, Persona 5, Super Smash Bros., Undertale, Delta Rune, Hallow Knight, Cuphead, and many others! And yes, I am VERY EXCITED for the new Sonic movie! I'm so gonna see it in theaters!

I did get some weird looks when people found out how much I loved video games, especially ones marketed more towards guys than girls, as I was growing up. Just about any time I told someone about this awesome video game I was playing, I'd be given these looks and people would try to discourage me from having any interests in them. What really upset me was that my brother also played the same video games I did and any time he talked about them people would listen to him and were happy that he enjoyed them so much. My brother and I are very close in age to the point that people often mistook us for twins, so we often played together and shared a lot of the same interests growing up. So having people approve of my brother's love for video games and then scold me for having the same passion was really annoying. It took me a while to figure out that the big difference between my brother and I having the same interests was that I am a girl and he's a guy. Even after learning of this, however, I was really confused as to why boys were allowed to like video games and it was considered strange for a girl to like video games. I did have some video games catered more towards girls than guys, but even talking about those video games made people judgmental about my interests. Had I had the same spunk as I do now, I'd have probably yelled at them for being so mean about me liking video games simply because I'm a girl. I'm really glad that I'm now living in a time where it's far more accepted for girls to enjoy video games than it is for it to be considered a taboo. I'm very open about my interests and love talking about my favorite video games. I've especially grown very fond of the Mystery Dungeon spin-off series in Pokémon after playing one of the game during a very depressing and difficult time in my life. That series literally saved my life and gave me the strength to fight my depression, even reigniting my passion for life and inspiring me to try and make a comic series based on the video games in hopes that they can help other people through their own struggles and life and not give up like how the games helped me. After that experience, I really must strongly argue against the idea that video games are not meant for girls. I now literally owe my life to a video game series and it's made me happier than I had been in a long time. So anyone who dares think that I shouldn't be playing video games simply for being a girl better hope that they don't cross paths with me, because I am ready and willing to scream their ears off to defend my love of video games and prove how they are for everyone.
Hi there. I am so sorry that you had to deal with that all your life. I am a guy and I love it when women play video games just as much, if not more, than men. Even when I was a kid, I had friends, neighbors and family members who were female and loved to play video games.
I had a sister who loved to play TMNT 4: Turtles In Time on Super Nintendo with me and our cousins when we were children. Also, I even had female best friends who loved to play Super Smash Bros Melee on GameCube back in our high school days.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, good for you for sticking to your guts and defending your love for video games. I never thought it was weird for girls to play video games at all. Everyone should be allowed to love what they love in their lives.

I have come to notice that, depending on where you live and when you were growing up, the acceptance of girls playing video games vary. Seems like you were lucky enough to grow up in a time and place were it was well accepted. For me, girls weren't particularly banned or anything like that from video games, but we were judged and discouraged a lot for it. I'm just glad that everyone stopped being such idiots about the whole thing and finally let girls have the same kind of fun as guys now. I'm also quite lucky that I managed to find a group that accepted my more "boyish" interests by the time I was in middle school. I made friends with a groups of guys who I ate lunch with almost everyday and they were all really nice. None of them cared that I was a girl (or even that I was the only girl at their table) and treated me with the same amount of respect as they did each other, even encouraging my love of video games. I think that's around the time people finally began to open up to the concept of girls liking more guyish things and became more accepting of it.

I have a theory as to why video games were gendered as such. I watched some old Atari 2600 commercials and most of them show the boys being actively into the games with their Atari joysticks and the girls were just...there. Some would show a girl playing Atari but it was mostly if there was a boy playing with her. Others just had girls looking and talking like a Valley Girl. So as you and I could imagine, we've all come a long way from video games being gendered or even "too violent for children" to being more accepted into society.
I also noticed something with the Pokemon video games too. In the very beginning, Red and Blue (and in some countries Green) only had a boy Pokemon Trainer. And that was it. There were girl trainers in those games but only as opponents, gym leaders and/or Elite Four. Then at some point, I don't remember which game or generation it was but they started to have girl trainers to play as too. For me, I chose to play as a girl Pokemon Trainer in Sword and Shield. Say what you want about those games but I will say this, playing as a girl made me feel happy because it was different. Plus, even though I'm a man, I wish I was a woman and getting to play as a girl Pokemon Trainer was the best thing I ever felt since playing Samas Aran in the Metroid games.
Now I've noticed that other Pokemon fans want the option of Non-Binary Pokemon Trainers too. When I heard about that, I immediately signed a petition to get that going. The Pokemon franchise has really evolved throughout the years (no pun intended) and I feel that adding a gender based diversity would be really great. You see, Pokemon games went from having boy trainers only to boys and girls and even different skin colors and ethnicities too. So having Non-Binary Pokemon Trainers would increase the diversity of Pokemon. As the theme song says and I quote, "you teach me and I'll teach you". That's what Pokemon is all about.
I'm sure if you and I were best friends, we'd be talking about our favorite games and/or game franchise or even go to places like E3. For the record, my favorite game franchise of all time is "Sonic The Hedgehog". And with the new movie coming out in another month, I'm super excited to see Sonic and Knuckles fight each other on the big screen. (Dream come true lol) I don't know if you're a big Sonic fan like me but I do love that series. I also love: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Thunder Force, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Kingdom Hearts, Ape Escape, Spyro The Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, The Legend Of Zelda, MarioKart and last but not least, Super Mario Bros. I also recently started to get into Phantasy Star and Streets Of Rage too. If there are other games I forgot to mention, I'm sorry but these were some of my all time favorites.

@@Truetransrebel They actually added the female trainer in the third installment game of Gen 2, Pokémon Crystal. So, it was only for Gen 1 and half of Gen 2 where you could only play as a boy. After that, you could easily play as a girl. I started my Pokémon Adventure in Gen 3 with Ruby, choosing Torchic as my Starter with the help of my brother. I was really shy about asking my parents for things I REALLY wanted for Christmas (and my birthday is right next to Christmas, so my Christmas list ended up also being something of Birthday list for me). I had this crazy idea that if you were good enough, Santa could grant ANY wish. So, every year, I'd ask for things like world peace and no more hunger or war and nothing else. I genuinely thought that if I was good enough and didn't ask for anything selfish, my wish for a better world would come true. Silly yet sweet, I know. However, as a result, I always got stuck with dumb girly stuff like fake makeup, fancy clothes, dolls, and other stuff I wasn't actually interested in. I'd have much rather gotten fun video games, toy swords, stuff like that. Though, I wouldn't complain about the Barbie stuff. I still love Barbie to this day.
Anyway, I spent most of my childhood not able to get the stuff I actually wanted both due to my silly beliefs and not having the courage to ask my parents for things I worried were too expensive. I wasn't exactly shy about my interests, but I wasn't exactly open about what I wanted either. My brother knew how much I love Pokémon at least. He one day came home with a copy of Pokémon Ruby he got from a friend and I was very jealous of him, but didn't want to demand my own Pokémon game. Luckily, my brother was nice enough to let me play from time to time. The only rules was that I did not save over his game. That was a fair enough rule and I was more than happy with the arrangement. After all, I finally got to play Pokémon, something I've always wanted to do! The only time our rule was broken was when I went exploring in the desert area where you find the fossils and accidentally ran into Latios. I had recently watched the Latias and Latios movie, so I knew this was a very rare and powerful Pokémon. I ran to my brother who, at the time, was playing with his friends and I explained the situation to him. He quickly took back his game and his friends cheered him on to catch it. It ran away. Luckily, it wasn't long after this that we learned about the roaming Pokémon feature and realized he could still catch Latios. It was a lot of fun.
Then, one day, my brother came home from school with a copy of Emerald he got from a friend. I don't know if it was the same from or a different friend, but I was really jealous that my brother now had 2 Pokémon games while I still had none. That's when my brother surprised me with one of the sweetest things he has ever done for me. After showing off his new Emerald game to me, he handed me his Ruby game and told me to take good care of it. He was actually giving me his Ruby game so that I could finally have my own Pokémon game! I was so happy that I actually started to cry! He and I started up brand new games together and . . . I got stuck for an hour trying to figure out which Starter I wanted... It was a toss up between Mudkip and Torchic. After finally asking my brother for help, he suggested I choose Torchic as it was a really good Pokémon and actually his very first Pokémon. I ended up following in my brother's footsteps when we began our journey! Now, despite having a late start, I'm miles ahead of my brother as a Trainer and have quite the collection of Pokemon!
Other games I love are Sonic the Hedgehog, Rune Factory, NiGHTS, Digimon, Thrill Ville, Persona 5, Super Smash Bros., Undertale, Delta Rune, Hallow Knight, Cuphead, and many others! And yes, I am VERY EXCITED for the new Sonic movie! I'm so gonna see it in theaters!
