Musicals tend to do well at the box office if they have at least one of three things: • The Disney brand • Big name stars • A marquee song that breaks into the mainstream like “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman In The Heights has none of those things. Still a good movie, but you need to draw in everyday moviegoers and without at least one of those factors it was never going to break out.
Yeah if The Greatest Showman didnt have those amazing songs and Hugh Jackman, it would’ve bombed hard. If Mary Poppins didn’t have Emily Blunt, it would’ve tanked harder.
96,000 and In the Heights are songs that were playing in my head from just the trailers alone. I’ve never seen the original show, and definitely didn’t know the story. Greatest showman opened under 10 million it’s opening weekend. I still got hope
Which i think is dumb, this movie has actual musical theater background people not just a big flashy. It's actually kind of sad that people rather see a movie with someone who doesn't do well than one with actual raw talent.
@@emmaschulz3799 it shouldve stayed in the musical theaters then. many people think musicals are the worst. doesn't matter how much talent is on the screen.
I saw In The Heights at a 3:30 showing on Friday at the biggest screen in the theater. There was maybe two other groups with me. I was hoping this would be a big hit, and I hope it’s finds it audience. As The Greatest Showman taught us, never judge a movie by its first weekend.
The Greatest Showman had the advantage of being released during the holiday season and awards season. And it had most of January and February to keep increasing its box office without competition from a new blockbuster. In The Heights won't have the same luck because F9 and Black Widow are debuting 2 and 3 weeks after In The Heights and will halt any box office attention it will get.
In The Heights hit Broadway in 2008. Without having seen it recently, can you name or sing anything from it? No. That's why it didn't open big. It's a good show, but the music from it never broke into the zeitgeist.
How much time are we talking about? Because if you would ask me to sing something from highschool musical I'd be lost, but that franchise was a success. On the other hand, Lin's songs are REALLY catchy, this is why so many people became obsessed with Hamilton, I've listened to the song of the original broadway musical so many times that I can almost sing the lyrics completely and the same thing happened to me when I saw hamilton.
@@UltimateKyuubiFox Not saying that the songs of highschool musical are forgettable. But when you don't watch something for a long period of time you forget about it, that's why I asked how much time are we talking about.
I agree. They're releasing the movie in Europe but no one knows what ITH is here... So people probably just think what is this about and why should I see it
Being in Australia, In the Heights has been marketed weirdly. The trailer that is advertised calls it the "feel good film of the summer", its winter here. Additionally, the trailer doesn't give any indication of what the film is about, other than its a musical and a guy is talking to some kids on the beach about a place he used to live. Unless, like me, you were aware of Hamilton and fell down a Lin-Manual Miranda rabbit hole to see what else he had done, most people here would have no idea of what In the Heights is. I'm interested in seeing it, but again we have restrictions on capacity in cinemas for most of the country and we can't access HBO max.I look forward to seeing it eventually, but most likely will wait until it's released free for streaming on an Australian service later in the year, most likely in the summer.
I thought the trailer was really cool and dynamic, I saw the trailer the last few times I went to the cinema and it made me pumped to see the movie when I can. But then again I am a fan of Lin and also musicals in general. (I'm also in Australia.)I feel like most trailers these days give away way too much story so I was happy it didn't seem to do that. It gave the vibe /atmosphere which I found enticing.
I’m in Sydney and caught an advance screening of “In the Heights”. It was amazing. There was a huge laughter from the audience when there was a Hamilton reference.
@@tiffanysandmeier4753 I’m in the US and I saw the trailer every time I cut on the TV. I got so sick of seeing it, it made me never want to watch it. I was like I hope this movie flops so I won’t have to put up with this trailer anymore.
I asked my son if he wanted to watch In the Heights with me, and the answer was a very aggressive no. I explained that it was a musical, and he said he already knew because he was tired of being bombarded with ads every time he went online! I said all that to say that marketing was not an issue with this release.
I've had that experience, of being so sick of seeing the trailers for a movie by the time it comes out that I avoid it where I might otherwise have seen it. The Revenant is an example that springs to mind.
@@reneew8181 i on the other hand searched for and watched the trailers for this movie many many times because I was super hyped for it, yet never got a targeted ad for it.
I don't get why people thought that In The Heights was going to do amazing. It's a musical which don't usually do that well unless it's a Disney movie. Also it's not a well known IP. I think it did pretty decent since it only made 3 million less than Tom and Jerry which is a very well known IP and a family movie.
@@TheEducator89 there’s a huge Latino community in New York living in a neighborhood called Washington Heights… commonly called the Heights. Recommend, it’s a feel good summer movie!
One word....Hamilton. If you like Hamilton (and so many people like Hamilton), you will very likely like In The Heights (and there are many connections between the two).
"It's a musical which don't usually do that well unless it's a Disney movie." I can think of a good number of non-Disney musicals that did well at the box office...
@@TheEducator89 Not zero publicity no. I'm getting instagram ads for it and I don't interact with musicals on the app so it's not like the algorithm is picking me automatically for that. I currently live in France.
Your committment to saying "thedevilmademedoit" each time is commendable and also randomly hilarious to me. lol As for In the Heights.. musicals are dicey, its an original IP more or less, targeted towards a niche market, songs that arent known, available on streaming etc etc etc...
I had a few friends that watched it on Disney+. They said they loved it. I asked them to hum or sing their fav song from the movie. The couldn't remember any of the music. The issue: THERE ARE NOT HIT SONGS. For a musical that is the first thing you need.
If someone told me a year ago that a Cruella De Vil "origin story" would make more domestically than the Wonder Woman sequel I'd... just wouldn't believe it.
@@silentsaturn7604 I’d agree with that, but it’s still remarkably stupid and pointless to even begin compare their box office as if 2020 was the same as every other year.
I've rarely seen such a dip in overall quality as we saw with WW and WW 1984. Word gets out FAST...this movie sucks. Not that I'm for villain origin stories...let the villains just be assholes IMO. Humanizing them and getting empathy for them reduces almost all conflict with the actual good guy/girl, the hero, and that's counterproductive. We like seeing villains get their comeuppance! They deserve it because they're assholes.
Love the deep dive into the stats for the fandango poll. Improving the public understanding of how polls work and what we can conclude from them is an important public service. That is Dan!
My sister and I saw In the Heights and loved it! She saw it on Broadway back in 2009, and we both knew all the songs and the story. I think the ads don’t show what’s it’s about very well, especially for international people that haven’t seen or heard of the Broadway version. If they redo the ad they have a chance of grabbing some more viewers.
As someone with a Journalism degree and a severe love of film (and analytics actually) I truly appreciate seeing journalism portrayed this way. Thanks Dan!
I think something to note about In The Heights on a worldwide scale is that it hasn't opened in a lot of markets yet. I can't speak to the US box office, but it may have a hike over the next few weeks (especially when you consider we don't get HBO Max internationally).
I agree. I've been highly anticipating In The Heights but it's coming out here this coming weekend, God willing. I'm not a Miranda fan either but I do love musicals and I think this one looks good.
My theory on why Heights hasn't done so well, at the time of this comment anyway, is because of the marketing. BUT not because of the lack of marketing, oh no theres been plenty of marketing, but because of what the marketing is specifically about. The marketing makes this movie look like an exhausting love story. Audiences might see these ads and think 'well I know what to expect from this film, it's probably pretty good, its probably about a love story, I can kinda guess how its gonna turn out, I can sleep on this and see what the reviews say because I have no real urge to see this immediately'. The marketing should have calmed down a little bit and told audiences to expect fun rather than EPIC AMAZING WORK from the creator of HAMILTON
I'm going to see In The Heights tonight!!! My first time back since early March 2020. My last theater experience was Dead Shot and while not awful, it wasn't enough to hold me over for 15 months.
I'm pretty much as 'middle aged white guy' as you can get, and my wife and I loved In The Heights. It's a great story about chasing your dreams, navigating family dynamics, and falling in love. For those discounting it because they didn't like Hamilton, I think they are doing the movie an injustice: Hamilton was a recording of a play. In The Heights is an ACTUAL movie. And it's not 100% music. There's a lot of dialogue with 5 or 6 musical numbers. I recommend anyone who enjoys love stories, dramas, and chasing-your-dream movies go see it in the theater.
I really liked Hamilton (I saw it on Disney not live), but I would be so bold as to say that In The Heights is better as a movie and musical. I think the songs in Hamilton were probably more fun and more memorable, but In The Heights had a more emotionally rich story that was wonderfully acted and the songs fit the story and emotions in a way that enhanced the story and characters as well as being fun on their own. Though that's not too say that Hamilton didn't have those things as well. Basically Hamilton is very good and In The Heights is even better.
I looked it up - I was way off on the number of songs. There's 15 or 16 songs. But to me the story was strong enough that it felt like a lot of dialogue moments with musical numbers as support... Which I guess is true of you consider each song is probably 4 minutes long, which makes about an hour of singing in a 2 hour 20 minute movie.
I also feel like the songs contribute to the movie while it’s the character or the plot . I don’t think it’s just random singing and dancing like what happens in some movies.
I hope the box office for in the heights won't affect how hollywood sees latin american stories, I thought the film was very powerful to the topics it was tackling. The music added to the story and character development and I could relate to many characters in the film.
Perhaps the market for starchy, myopic, feel-good stories rosily highlighting the “experience” of often oppressed ethnic groups is slightly fatigued at the moment? Not a lot of people my age seem to care much for these types of films, especially musicals. It’s all a bit too saccharine to be honest
It will certainly impact that and it’s a shame. Probably the last all-Latino cast we will see in a long time. Warner Bro’s is probably thinking, if Lin-Manuel Miranda can’t sell this, who can? A real shame; it is a wonderful musical.
Must be hard being extremely attractive and talented and having all your dreams come true because you stayed positive and believed. Surrounded by such a beautiful neighborhood and loving community. Yes. Very relatable...
I watched it at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood BLVD at 2pm today and it was only me and maybe 7 other people in a theater that had maybe 20 rows of sets. GREAT MOVIE BTW! And EDIT it was the first time I have been to the movies since 2019.
I really liked In the Heights. Watched it in theaters (pretty empty) and then came home and watched it again with my husband. He didn't hate it but I would have definitely never managed to drag him to the movies -especially with us having it available on HBO Max. Unfortunately, I feel that will happen to many. I really enjoyed the Greatest Showman, but I managed to get all the people who doubted it to watch it in theater. Not a chance that happens with In The Heights when there is the option to stay home and not spend money on sth you might or might not enjoy.
I know in my area, seating was still very limited in theatres due to social distancing rules. I had friends who could not get tickets this weekend, every showing was sold out. Many are going next weekend instead.
I think a musical has to be very specific things going for it to be successful, like a big name actor or attached to Disney. It's still a niche market for general audiences
As someone who loves musicals and saw In the Heights yesterday as my first movie back in theaters, I'm sad that it underperformed and I hope it's numbers creep upward because it was a really great experience for me, personally.
@@emmaschulz3799 love how you say this even tho Dan literally said their HBO Max numbers are low and HBO MAX shouldn't be the only factor. Guess you didn't watch the video
Its just the personal choice. I have no interest in watching this movie. It has nothing interesting for me. Story, cast or anything else. So, people like me must have waited for reviews and how word of mouth. If the movie is good and lot of people recommend me, then i will watch it.
It just wasn’t marketed correctly. The actors are great, but without proper marketing it’s difficult. It gave you no indication what the movie was actually about.
Seeing how the top market for ITH was the NY Metro Area, it looks like they might have been preaching to the choir with this one. (Hell, I live in the NY Metro Area, and the screening I went to have a pretty decent crowd)
I'm glad to see Dan's video pulling 7.5k views in only five hours as of this writing. You have my continued support, both my thumbs up and my willingness to share these videos.
I think the marketing for In The Heights was not marketed well through its trailers where the story was missing and non marketing of songs that go trending, do you remember any song without seeing the movie? From what I've heard from some US residents, marketing was not even decently aggressive. So, no story, no popular songs, no big stars, and non aggressive marketing, this opening is underwhelming. But, movies like these may work like in the long run as there are seating restrictions and Canada is mostly closed. Although even if 1 million households watched it, wouldn't it mean a loss of 10 million or even 5 million if only half of those people would have come to the big screens?
Without a big star Its just not a movie that a broad number of people have an interest in. I am not sure why the experts expected such a big audience. It's the type of film that needs word of mouth to be successful.
I still think its hilarious that Charmen commercials come up on your videos. Your Movie Fights pitch of a Charmen Bears movie was so frigging funny. I think Carlson called it the SH*T Bears movie.
I hate musicals so my opinion might be biased. Every time I hear “experts” say musicals are making a comeback because one did good, the comeback never happens. I don’t know what makes that one musical successful every few years. I doubt anyone does otherwise you’d have a successful one every year.
The two big musical hits of the last few years, as far as I can remember, have been La La Land and The Greatest Showman. La La Land is about people in Los Angeles working in show business, so it got a lot of push from people in Los Angeles who work in show business (it's a common saying that Hollywood/the Oscars love movies about Hollywood and/or about making movies in general), plus it had some famous people in it. The Greatest Showman seemingly managed to hit an "applicability" zeitgeist, with the story of marginalized people forming a community and sticking up for themselves (and especially the song This Is Me) striking a chord with a lot of people.
@@KeithFraser82 it could be that musicals only do good if famous actor(s) are in it. Someone would have do the research and create some charts to confirm or dispute that. But you could make that argument for movies in general so I’m hesitant to say that is a unique factor for a successful musical. I’m not even sure there are enough recent musicals (last 20 years) to have a decent sample size. Considering I’d rather watch a rerun of yesterday’s weather than a musical. I doubt I would know what makes a good musical even if Dan made the charts.
I would have seen it in theaters, but it was also nice to justify that $15 a month for HBOmax. Musicals are hit or miss for me, but this was thoroughly enjoyable
I'll be honest, In The Heights isn't a movie I would ever want to watch. Nor is any plane-jane musical. I'm not alone in this. These also are not movies that benefit from a movie going experience like a modern blockbuster will. Black Widow will be the big test on whether people are willing to go back to theaters for big tentpole movies.
In the Heights low opening is definitely disappointing, but let's not overlook how much Peter Rabbit 2 crashed from its previous installment. The first one's opening weekend was $25m, this one dropped 60%.
For some reason, Sony changed the release date for Peter Rabbit 2 at the very last minute, so I feel like not many people were even aware the movie opened on Friday. The movie has been performing very well in the UK and Australia, probably because audiences knew when it was opening.
I didnt even know PR was until a couple days ago and hadn't even seen the trailer. No commercials, nothing. That was 100% a marketing fail because I took my kids to see it and it was decent for that kind of movie.
I wound up going to PR2 because my dad and sister wanted to see Quiet Place 2 and I was not at all prepared for a horror movie. While seeking another alternative we found PR2 and I was surprised it was an option, but took it immediately. I think PR2 has at least that going for it. It’s the one family oriented movie out right now that someone will automatically understand what they’re getting
Really, really thoughtful take on what went "wrong" for In the Heights. Even when I don't agree, it's great to hear your thoughts and your commitment to level-headed analysis over hype.
As an engineer, my experience with "non numbers people" is that most don't know how to interpret data. So the reporting is probably not malicious and not even click bait, it's just poor basic education on statistical interpretation 🤦♀️
I have to admit, while I've heard of in the hights, I don't know any of the songs and read a description that made me think is this like Rent? Which I like, so hopefully. I however, feel like this may have effected the amount of people that go see it. A well known musical tends to do better.
As a Latino and one who is familiar to the area I just did not connect what I saw on screen to the culture or to the community. It failed to register with me.
All my female cousins love Hamilton, they all listen or sing the songs and got together like 3 times to watch it. They had no idea what In the Heights was or even heard of it. I only know about because I saw a trailer before Raya and if I didn't they probably wouldn't have seen it.
Statistics are SUPER important. I'm still a little shocked I never had to take a class in it. Sure, it was attached to some other math class, but the last couple of years have really taught me the real-world importance of understanding how stats work. Thanks for explaining it in a really digestible way. In the Heights really came out of nowhere for me, maybe on paper it could have been a heavy hitter, but I never thought it was going to go very far. But that's also a gamble with limited information. A Quiet Place 2 just had more momentum.
what it also reflects is how media + reviews dont affect consumers and their willingness to go see a movie like this - its got good reviews and lots of people recommending it but its not a hit.
A musical with no big name stars, no household big name director in a time where people are still sort of hesitant to return to theaters? Yeah, makes sense the numbers are low.
Yeah, I mean it is available on hbo max for no extra premium price and most people probably think that a musical is not the kind of big blockbuster you have to be in the theater to see. I think something like black widow and all the rabid marvel fans will be something more suited to bring back theaters.
@@jacksonbrickmedia939 i enjoy some musicals like Easter Parade, La La Land....but in the Heights hasn't interested me enough to check it out. I think its been marketed poorly. None of the marketing really tells us what its about. All the marketing is geared towards telling us how awesome it is, that Lin Manuel Miranda was involved , that a bunch of celebrities love it, and it takes place in NYC........that's it.
I actually correctly guessed that the number 1 movie 10 years ago would be Green Lantern, but I was surprised on Mr Popper's Penguins. That's the one that I would have thought was 15-20 years ago,
I am curious as to the legs In the Heights will have. As a musical that has glowing reviews, I would expect it to do really well over its run from repeat viewings and word of mouth. But availability on HBO Max will probably put a big dent in repeat viewings, and I’m not sure if enough people saw it for the word of mouth to really catch on.
From what I saw AMC also had a promotional deal with In The Heights. I saw 3 different free advance screening times of ITH available before it premiered, across the US. The people I knew who wanted to see the movie all went to one of the free screenings.
I think this may have to be a word of mouth movie like The Greatest Showman, another musical that opened small. That one had tremendous legs. Whether this one can establish legs while it's simultaneously on HBOMax I've no idea. But I do know every single person I've talked to who has seen it has loved it. I didn't see it this weekend, but only because it's the first weekend in a long time I had plans all weekend. I'm planning to see the movie next Saturday in theaters. In fact, I already have my ticket.
Yep proud normie trash here. Hey if I get covid from being sat in a theatre for 2hrs I'd rather it be for Black Widow, which I've been waiting for for years, and which I had almost thought would never happen, or would be sent to Disney+, and had actually heard about, and gave a crap about. Oh yeah and is made by a trusted series which delivers good value for money on the big screen, with actresses I LOVE, which will be less fun to watch on a small screen. So yeah. You bet I'm saving myself for Black Widow.
i didn't know anything about this movie when going into the movie theater and was blown away by how good the movie was. strangely here in jakarta i saw the trailer on imax theater and so i pressumed it was going to be played at imax. instead they only play it on regular theatre for 3 or 4 days. last monday the movie was not shown anymore. i'm actually stunned bc i also thought this movie would do well at the box office. it shouldn't be a factor if there was no well-known actor in it. i saw many famous actor like hugh jackman, even oprah are so hyped and giving praise about this movie.
I'm normally not a musical person, but I practically ran to see In the the Heights. The trailers made it seem like a fun summer bash about community, which I was everything I was nostalgic about because of quarantine. It's interesting, I thought others would be in a similar boat as me.
It was okay. I wasn't moved like I was with Hamilton. I like Anthony Ramos, but I don't believe he can carry a movie. I felt really disconnected with his character because he just didn't hold eye contact well with the other characters - especially with Melissa Barrera.
Being a NC boy who live in palm springs/cat city CA a while 1-5th grade then went back for summers until highschool I know it's a culture shock coming back to the south. I hope Mara are learning to love the little things about TN while remembering a lot of people don't realize their bias. Example I grew up with the Duke boys just being fun loving scamps....
Never seen the musical on stage no idea what it's about, I've grown up in the theatre community and I haven't heard any buzz about wanting to watch a film of it. Still don't know what it's about from the trailer
I imagine one reason Green Lantern seems like it came out more than 10 years ago is that it arguably resembles superhero movies that came out 5-10 years before it did, like the Jessica Alba/Chris Evans Fantastic Four movies or the Ang Lee Hulk. It doesn't seem like a contemporary of Iron Man 1-2 or the Dark Knight movies or X-Men: First Class.
The low box office so far for In the Heights isn't surprising but certainly still very disappointing, being one of the people who loved the film. I don't know what WB could have to make the film (as it is) a bigger hit Less early screenings? Making it exclusive to theaters? Releasing it later in the summer (July/August)? We can only hope for it to have long legs like The Greatest Showman. Will that end up happening? We'll see, but I'm not confident, with the HBO Max simultaneous release. At least, In the Heights has its pretty low $55 million budget going for it (though the marketing budget was probably pretty big).
Greatest Showman has a clearer plot and a bigger name leading man. My guess is that maybe the ads for In the Heights haven’t drawn in people who aren’t familiar with the original play. I loved it, but I already knew about the play and all the songs already. It playing in theaters exclusively would help of course, but they can’t afford to do that right now.
In the heights comes out here at the end of July and I can't wait. This is a lesson in social bubbles because everyone I know is super hyped for this movie but everyone I know also is either working in or a big fan of musical theatre in the first place 😂
As others have pointed out, In the Heights was never that marketable to begin, HBO Max or not: It's a nearly 2.5 hour adaptation of a decade-plus old Broadway musical with no discernible plot or recognizable soundtrack. Maybe a film version of The Book of Mormon or Hamilton might work, or Wicked, which is Jon Chu's next project, but even those are risks. The Hollywood musical hasn't been mainstream for a long time, now, regardless of how hard movies like Moulin Rouge, Chicago, Les Miserables, or La La Land beg to differ. Few audiences care, and Chu is not the sort of director to transform mediocre material into cinematic dynamite; his career is a smorgasbord of bland, forgettable movies, only revived at the last minute by Crazy Rich Asians.
I never heard of In the Heights till you started talking about it on this channel. I'm thinking of trying to see it sometime this week. I hear from a couple people that liked it.
Hot take alert. The songs don't have broad appeal. I listend to them before seeing the movie, which I do with musicals, and I didn't like them. So I didn't watch it.
I live in Winnipeg Canada and have never seen a preview or anything about in the heights , I’m a movie guy so I knew about it but I asked so many people if they heard about this movie and every single person had no idea what I was talking about
Here’s my 2 cents. I’m a Latina from NYC so I wanted to see this movie because I feel like it’s very niched down to people like me, however I’m not a big fan of musicals. I’m also mentally not prepared for large indoor gatherings so I opted to see this film on HBO. I would have loved to support this movie in theaters but I just didn’t feel comfortable doing that. I enjoyed the movie but I’m glad I got to see it at home. I also know that not supporting movies like this in theaters means that studios are less likely to make movies like this. I wanted this movie to do well but in the end I’m not surprised that it didn’t. Hopefully time will push up the viewings on streaming services.
Summer 2011 was good times. I saw sooo many movies in the theater that year. Not all of them were good, but I have good memories connected to all of them, including green lantern.
*sigh* You’re right. I used to just say U.S. and our Canadian neighbors reminded me that it excluded them. But now I’m including too much. I think I’ll just stick to ‘domestic’ from now on.
I saw Cruella at my local drive in and really enjoyed it I don't think I'm interested in seeing anything else in theaters until F9 also WB is definitely losing money with their HBO Max release I was supposed to see The Conjuring in theaters with my friends but after finding out it's on HBO Max they all opted to see it at home and there was 8 of us
Some people I know have said they have seen the trailer for In The Heights and want to see it, but they either don’t have HBO Max and/or aren’t comfortable going to the theater just yet. Meanwhile I have already seen three movies at the theater.

When I worked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, one of the orientation segments was whether the word data was singular or plural lol They make sure you get that shit straight from Day One 😂
I am a fan of the original In The Heights musical. My wife and I wanted to see it in theaters this weekend but when I realized it was free on HBOMax we skipped it to watch at home. We then didn't even watch it and will on a free night we have. I think this is just the kind of movie that people aren't in a rush to see. Might have ok legs if so.
It would seem pretty unbelievable even for In the Heights to be the first movie in a theater since the closings for even 96% of people watching that particular movie, let alone all current moviegoers. For me, it is actually my 12th. I watched 8 back in late summer/early fall, and another 3 since early last month.
It's got to be a marketing issue: Honestly, I hadn't even heard of "In the Heights" until TODAY when I saw folks talking about its performance, among other issues, on Twitter this morning. I seriously never knew this movie even existed. I'm betting I'm not the only one either.
@@corazoncubano5372 That's all well and good, but 1. I've never heard of it, and 2. heavily marketed where? It's not even front and center on HBOMax - I had to dig for it.

Exactly! I love Chicago, Hamilton and a couple other musicals but other than those I really don’t like musicals. Went to see Les Miserables and it was like nails on chalkboard, and besides Latinos really don’t care if they “see themselves” on screen or tv, at least I don’t.

Is it possible that the main demographic for 'In The Heights' is an audience less likely to venture out during a pandemic, and also an older/ less technologically adept audience that wouldn't be using HBO Max? Thus lacking viewers through both platforms..
Musicals make me want to hug people! Get close with a buddy and sing a silly song all out of tune just to have a giggle! I'm sure the movie is fine but I didn't see it because it would have depressed me having to see it alone or with friends who would've been all masked up. (And rightly so) It was just not the film to see in a pandemic.
Musicals tend to do well at the box office if they have at least one of three things:
• The Disney brand
• Big name stars
• A marquee song that breaks into the mainstream like “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman
In The Heights has none of those things.
@@emmaschulz3799 I still haven't seen Hamilton and I don't care. That's how many of us feel about musicals. It just is what it is.
@@emmaschulz3799 it shouldve stayed in the musical theaters then. many people think musicals are the worst. doesn't matter how much talent is on the screen.
Can you bring back the “This Weekend in Box Office History” segment? I always enjoyed seeing when certain landmarks in film happened
Yeah. I have a feeling ITH is probably going to be a future cult classic.
Tried watching it was too corny in my opinion
@@richierich7229 Greatest showman released in December 2017. The Last Jedi came out the same month and Black Panther the following month.
I had the same experience. I watched it with a friend of mine today, and barely anyone in the theater. :(
In The Heights hit Broadway in 2008.

@idkAlan and hopefully In The Heights will keep Breaking Free from the chains of box office flops

I agree. They're releasing the movie in Europe but no one knows what ITH is here... So people probably just think what is this about and why should I see it
I love how dynamic the "last 365 days" chart is. So fluid.
I am in the USA and think that WB hasn't marketed it that well. I think I saw a trailer, but I am not sure.
Yeah! A ton of ads, but I haven't gotten a single one with a song in it. They should be hooking me with something catchy.
Totally agree. The marketing for this made me roll my eyes every time, I was so tired of the same little song clips.

As for In the Heights.. musicals are dicey, its an original IP more or less, targeted towards a niche market, songs that arent known, available on streaming etc etc etc...
Every time I thought he was about to not do it, but they BOOM he hits you with it
I had a few friends that watched it on Disney+.
Wonder woman came out in the height of the pandemic and was available for free on HBO Max so not surprising
@@athenajaxon2397 One is also a good movie and one isn't.
@@silentsaturn7604 I’d agree with that, but it’s still remarkably stupid and pointless to even begin compare their box office as if 2020 was the same as every other year.
I haven't seen Cruella yet but WW2 just sucked.
Dan talking charts and data science and sampling made my day!
The Football example was awesome. This is journalism - not an average UA-cam channel! Thank you Dan ❤️
As someone with a Journalism degree and a severe love of film (and analytics actually) I truly appreciate seeing journalism portrayed this way. Thanks Dan!
Movie looked promising and fun. Issue: I never heard a single song in the commercials that was a hit/stuck in my head. For a musical that is a MUST.
We have watched it several times this weekend on HBO max. Loved it. Hopefully it grows in popularity like the greatest showman did.
5 or 6 musical numbers??? To me, it felt like it was 80 percent singing.
I like Hamilton better.
I also feel like the songs contribute to the movie while it’s the character or the plot . I don’t think it’s just random singing and dancing like what happens in some movies.
Literally had no idea In The Heights was in theaters and I pay attention to that kind stuff
@Q yeah, it was weird
Me too
I really love Dan using international posters for the international charts
Thanks for noticing! I love deciding which ones to use!
Rest eternally in peace and power, Bro. Ned Beatty. Thank you for sharing your acting talents with humanity. One Love, D.H.
I watched it at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood BLVD at 2pm today and it was only me and maybe 7 other people in a theater that had maybe 20 rows of sets. GREAT MOVIE BTW! And EDIT it was the first time I have been to the movies since 2019.
I'm still wrapped around ads from A QUIET PLACE PART II, CRUELLA and THE CONJURING 3. I didn't even remember IN THE HEIGHTS was coming out this month.
R.I.P. Ned Beatty. He was a part of so much of my childhood, and many others. Always a joyous presence on screen.
As someone who loves musicals and saw In the Heights yesterday as my first movie back in theaters, I'm sad that it underperformed and I hope it's numbers creep upward because it was a really great experience for me, personally.
same it's dumb that they put it on HBO max the same time of release. A lot of people watched it but on HBO max sadly
Dan, can you see how many musicals have been in the top ten summer movies in the past?
It just wasn’t marketed correctly. The actors are great, but without proper marketing it’s difficult. It gave you no indication what the movie was actually about.
Seeing how the top market for ITH was the NY Metro Area, it looks like they might have been preaching to the choir with this one.
(Hell, I live in the NY Metro Area, and the screening I went to have a pretty decent crowd)
I'm glad to see Dan's video pulling 7.5k views in only five hours as of this writing.
You have my continued support, both my thumbs up and my willingness to share these videos.
Ned Beatty R.I.P. 😢🙏
Maybe the box office isn’t fully back yet.

I saw Quiet Place Part II advertised more than In the Height’s. I forgot that In the Heights came out this weekend.
A Quiet Place already passed that test
My favorite of Ned Beatty's more recent performances is the Mayor of Dirt in "RANGO", where he does a killer John Huston impression.
I def watched it at home. Liked it.
Favorite show every week. Thank you for the update
Brilliant episode, I really appreciated the deep dive on the expectations of In the Heights and how polls are reported.
@@MrCoat yes! This! I have kids and didn't know they moved it. I took them last night and they loved it
I wound up going to PR2 because my dad and sister wanted to see Quiet Place 2 and I was not at all prepared for a horror movie. While seeking another alternative we found PR2 and I was surprised it was an option, but took it immediately. I think PR2 has at least that going for it. It’s the one family oriented movie out right now that someone will automatically understand what they’re getting
Another factor for ITH expectation was high rate from critics
Really, really thoughtful take on what went "wrong" for In the Heights. Even when I don't agree, it's great to hear your thoughts and your commitment to level-headed analysis over hype.
As an engineer, my experience with "non numbers people" is that most don't know how to interpret data. So the reporting is probably not malicious and not even click bait, it's just poor basic education on statistical interpretation 🤦♀️
This might have underperformed at the box office but it's going to have a lot of staying power on digital. It's getting great word of mouth.
By whom?
So happy for the return of the flashback!
Repeat viewings of In The Heights on HBO Max are going to be very high I think. I left the theater and immediately wanted to rewatch.

I agree.
I'm planning to see the movie next Saturday in theaters. i didn't know anything about this movie when going into the movie theater and was blown away by how good the movie was. strangely here in jakarta i saw the trailer on imax theater and so i pressumed it was going to be played at imax. instead they only play it on regular theatre for 3 or 4 days. last monday the movie was not shown anymore. i'm actually stunned bc i also thought this movie would do well at the box office. it shouldn't be a factor if there was no well-known actor in it. i saw many famous actor like hugh jackman, even oprah are so hyped and giving praise about this movie.
I'm normally not a musical person, but I practically ran to see In the the Heights. The trailers made it seem like a fun summer bash about community, which I was everything I was nostalgic about because of quarantine. It's interesting, I thought others would be in a similar boat as me.
This was sooo informative. Thanks for all the effort.
Time for charts! 😍😍😍
Make the pandemic disappear 🤣
Greatest Showman has a clearer plot and a bigger name leading man. My guess is that maybe the ads for In the Heights haven’t drawn in people who aren’t familiar with the original play. I loved it, but I already knew about the play and all the songs already. It playing in theaters exclusively would help of course, but they can’t afford to do that right now.
In the heights comes out here at the end of July and I can't wait. This is a lesson in social bubbles because everyone I know is super hyped for this movie but everyone I know also is either working in or a big fan of musical theatre in the first place 😂
I just watched it on HBO Max saving my movie money for black widow with my 5 kids.
Yaaaaaaay return of the international chart 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
What's really crazy about Green Lantern is that it was also America's introduction to Taika Waititi.
Dan, when you say “North American numbers”, what you really mean is “U.S. and Canada”. North America would include Mexico.
*sigh* You’re right. I used to just say U.S. and our Canadian neighbors reminded me that it excluded them. But now I’m including too much. I think I’ll just stick to ‘domestic’ from now on.
"North America" for box office only includes the U.S. and Canada. Mexico is counted separately.
Edit. I mean that's how the "trades" report it.
@@dirtbag_8132 its done that way on purpose, got to subtly remind people that south of the border is foreign/ not one of "us"
@@DanMurrellMovies Thanks for the reply, Dan. I don’t mean to be too much of a stickler about it. Just trying to help.
@@DanMurrellMovies You can probably say U.S. for a few more weeks. There's pretty much no cinemas open in Canada right now.
I saw Cruella at my local drive in and really enjoyed it I don't think I'm interested in seeing anything else in theaters until F9 also WB is definitely losing money with their HBO Max release I was supposed to see The Conjuring in theaters with my friends but after finding out it's on HBO Max they all opted to see it at home and there was 8 of us
I'm curious to hear what Dan thinks about how well The Suicide Squad will do after the new trailer
Im thinking this film will gain traction and will hopefully get folks to see this film. It was great fun.
Some people I know have said they have seen the trailer for In The Heights and want to see it, but they either don’t have HBO Max and/or aren’t comfortable going to the theater just yet. Meanwhile I have already seen three movies at the theater.
Dan, quick correction. Data is plural. So it should be, "These data ..." Sounds weird, but it's technically correct. The best kind of correct. Love your content. Send my best to Mara.
I’m a Latin teacher and even I don’t use data as plural. 😃Datum is a lost word now.
@@KateHistoryMysteries I'm a biologist. Scientists get corrected endlessly at conferences and when they submit manuscripts for publication. And I was taught datum/data in grad school a few year ago. The word comes up a lot in science. I've seen it used correctly on NPR. It's been used incorrectly in "Into the Spiderverse" and "The First Purge." Haha. I just think we seldomly use data as a singular term in our conversations. I think each speaker should be presented with the background on the word and make up their own mind. Also I subbed to your channel!
It was heavily marketed and is the film version of the 2005 play of the same name.
@@corazoncubano5372 That's all well and good, but 1. I've never heard of it, and 2. heavily marketed where? It's not even front and center on HBOMax - I had to dig for it.
Regarding In the Hights no one saw this points before making the movie:
- Latinos aren’t very drive to Musicals (I’m Latino I know)
- Broadway Caucasian fans is niche, Latino Broadway fans are even more niche.
Exactly! I love Chicago, Hamilton and a couple other musicals but other than those I really don’t like musicals. Went to see Les Miserables and it was like nails on chalkboard, and besides Latinos really don’t care if they “see themselves” on screen or tv, at least I don’t.
@@007Julie I think Latino movie goers are still on the “Movie Star” mode, if they had cast a Tom Cruise level artist on the main rol this movie would had been the success everyone wanted to be.
@@NeverSaySandwich1 personally I love movies that are smart, well acted, and with a solid direction but I see your point.
@@007Julie Speak for yourself. I'm Cuban an i love seeing us represented in our broad spectrum on screen.
@@corazoncubano5372 like I said, me personally don’t care, but apparently not all shades were represented. There were no Black Latinos, so even LMM didn’t think about them. Sad.
This is the first I'm even hearing of it...
Me too
I just read that Manifest was canceled. You can stop catching up now! It's really not worth it.
I'm looking forward to the review of Luca. No idea why, but I'm very excited for the movie.
I had never heard of In The Heights before this video
Is it possible that the main demographic for 'In The Heights' is an audience less likely to venture out during a pandemic, and also an older/ less technologically adept audience that wouldn't be using HBO Max? Thus lacking viewers through both platforms..
@@NeverSaySandwich1 I wouldn't say 70+, but certainly musicals tend to hit a large audience of people who are 50/60+
Musicals make me want to hug people! Get close with a buddy and sing a silly song all out of tune just to have a giggle! I'm sure the movie is fine but I didn't see it because it would have depressed me having to see it alone or with friends who would've been all masked up. (And rightly so) It was just not the film to see in a pandemic.
