Story
Situated deep in the Himalayas lies the former sovereign nation Tibet. Also known as The Roof of the World, the geographical location of this spiritual country kept it relatively isolated for centuries conserving a deep-rooted Buddhist culture. This all changed in the beginning of the 20th century. First, Tibet was invaded by the British in 1903, followed by the Chinese self proclaimed liberators in 1949. In the following years The Peoples Republic of China used cunning tactics to try to win over the hearts and minds of the Tibetan government and citizens. When this tactic proved unsuccessful the Chinese Maoists resorted to violence and oppression, forcing the Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, along with many monks, aristocrats and citizens, into exile. The documentary Tibet The Chinese Lie gives an overview of this on-going conflict with eyewitness accounts of Tibetans in exile and archive footage mainly consisting of Chinese propaganda films.
Social Interest
The Peoples Republic of China has always made the world believe that the Chinese presence benefits the 6 million Tibetans. They introduced (socialist) education, built roads and high-rise buildings and started to exploit the natural resources of Tibet undermining the traditional Buddhist way of life. The Tibetans were not allowed to voice their opinion about any of these measures, even though they were slowly stripped of the values most important to them, since religion in communism is considered as Opium for the people. In 1956 things took a turn for the worse when protests broke out and China changed its tactics to a more direct and violent approach leading to decades of loss of identity and destruction of culture and Buddhist artifacts (Cultural Genocide), beside the famine, imprisonment, violence and killings. In the last 10 years the Chinese imperialistic ambitions are finally fully revealed with the creation of the Qingzang-Lhasa railway leading to a mass colonization of Han Chinese in Tibet. Only 1/3 of the population of Lhasa remains Tibetan, and the once so magical and mystical capital, with its breathtaking Norbulingka Palace, has changed into a capitalist town full of Chinese owned shops.
Political & Historical Relevance
In the last 60 years only sporadically news from uprisings in Tibet reach the international media. Especially in the beginning the only imagery the West encountered from Tibet was carefully selected Chinese propaganda. The international community has never condemned the Chinese actions in Tibet openly, partly because of clever tactics used by the Chinese denying the fact that Tibet ever was a sovereign nation. For example: They even forced (read blackmailed) the Dalai Lama to officially deny Tibets claims of sovereignty. Nowadays Tibet is more easily accessible because of the Qingzang-Lhasa railway, the highest in the world. And even though more impartial journalism about Tibet is reaching the West the international community remains silent still. The current lack of international attention for the Tibet issue may be explained by the position of China on the Global Financial Market. Criticism on the Chinese annexation of Tibet may well result in economic sanctions or losses for nations that oppose the Imperialist ambitions of China.

1. Was Tibet an independent country before 1912?
Tibet was an independent country before 1246. From 1373 to 1578, Tibet rulers paid tribute to Chinese Ming dynasty government many times. In 1642, Dalai Lama invited a Mongol tribe’s troops to come into Tibet to fight other opposite Tibetan groups. Tibet was then controlled by this Mongol tribe. This Mongol tribe voluntarily submitted to the Chinese Qing dynasty in 1653 for Chinese support to defend against west Mongols. In 1705, Chinese emperor abolished the 6th Dalai Lama for his violation of Buddhist obligation, and ordered him to be arrested and sent to Beijing for punishment. He died on the way.
Since 18th century, Dalai Lama had kneed down towards Chinese emperor’s picture many times during ceremonies. China posted a garrison in Lhasa from 1751. Tibet respected Chinese government’s sovereignty, which is typically shown in the selection of the 10th Dalai Lama in 1822. Britain and Russia recognized Tibet as a part of China in 1906. China ruled Tibet directly from 1910 to 1911. Since Manchu are Chinese citizens and support China’s claim on Tibet, Chinese regarded China after Qing as a legal successor of Qing dynasty. (In fact, Western countries made sure China became the successor of Qing dynasty, so that China could continue to pay the huge ransom owed by Qing to the West countries after it was defeated in 1900.)
2. Was Tibet an independent country between 1912 and 1950?
After the collapse of China’s Qing dynasty in 1912, China witnessed a lot of civil wars and warlordism until 1949, but did not denounce its claim on Tibet. Tibet never declared independence towards China or other countries during this period. (The 13th Dalai Lama himself denied (to the British) that he had ever authorized the Russian subject--Agvan Dorjiev, to sign a treaty with Mongolians on behalf of Tibet. So, that 1913 treaty is not valid.) USA officially recognized Tibet as a part of China in 1943, way before communist China existed.
No country in the world recognizes Tibet as an independent country, or officially regard Tibet as not a part of china, or officially regard Tibet as occupied by China.
3. Did Tibet has opportunity to defeat Chinese invasion in 1950?
Tibet is huge and has very high altitude and very thin air which is difficult for Chinese to breathe, let alone climb mountains. The total length of road which a 4-wheel vehicle can drive in whole Tibet was only 4 kilometers in 1950. Chinese has to across many high mountains at very high altitude for 2000 kilometers to get to Lhasa. There was little sources of food or even water. In short, Tibet was a perfect place to wage guerilla war on Chinese troops, and that is exactly what CIA recommended to Tibetans. In 1950, Tibet had about 100,000 bolt rifles and many Tibetans were hunters and can shoot very accurately over long distance. If Tibetans used guerilla war to attack Chinese supply line, Chinese troops will starve to death and have not way to advance across 2000 kilometers of mountains (without road) into central Tibet. Instead, Tibetans choose to sign the peace liberation treaty after only two hundred Tibetan soldiers got killed in the Chamdo battle in 1950. In short, Tibetans had good chance to defeat Chinese in 1950 if they really want. But it is impossible in 1959 since China had built 3 roads (totally >4000 kilometers) and bridges into Tibet since 1950.
4. Why Tibetans rebelled in 1959?
Before 1956, most Tibetans were serfs, and most lands were owned by noblemen and monasteries. The part of Tibet (central) ruled by Dalai Lama enjoyed very high autonomy within China from 1950-1959. China launched land reforms in the Chinese directly ruled (east) Tibetan areas in 1956, taking land from noblemen and monasteries and distributing them to the serfs. Rebellion led by noblemen and monasteries broke out in east Tibet in 1956, with independence as the slogan to get support from serfs, and spread to Lhasa in 1959, encouraged and supported by the CIA.
5. Does China repress Tibetans and practice cultural genocide?
There is a long covered fact (by all parts involved) about China and communism. Chinese communism was created with the help of Soviet Union, and controlled by Stalin. After the Second World War, Soviet Union supplied Chinese communist troops with captured Japanese weapons including 2700 artilleries, and produced ammunitions and weapons for communists in Russia-occupied China’s north-east. USA organized an international arms embargo to the troops of Chinese anti-communist government. Chinese nationalist government troops were poorly equipped with little artilleries and ammunition. Communism caused at least 60million Chinese death. The truth is: communism was forced upon to Chinese by Soviet union with the help of U.S. So, China should not be blamed for the destruction of Tibetan culture in Cultural revolution in Tibet.
Regarding to your answer in question 5, why do you say China shouldn’t be blamed for the mass genocide on the Tibetan people. Although the Cultural Revolution did kill millions of Chinese, who were the people behind it? Who were the people taking the lives of their own and Tibetans as well? How are you going to say the people who killed were innocent because they were victims as well. Let's remember that OLD TIBET, under the Dalai Lama, where religion and government were symbiotic, was a FEUDAL system. The serfs were OWNED by the noble class. Tell a joke: Tibet independence. I wonder if you have thought about how Tibet's economy, trade and national security will unfold even after independence. Assuming Tibet secedes from China, will it eventually be annexed by India and then demand independence again when India militarily and economically threatens Western interests? Tibet has been a highly autonomous region of traditional Imperial China since before the People's Liberation Army entered the region. Its religious leaders must be appointed by the Chinese government, and its security is therefore protected by China, just as imperial Chinese troops protected it from Nepal in the 18th century. I really think this is as good as it gets, the fate of the land itself is too troubled to be truly independent of any other country, and its holding of troops in 1950 was implicitly supported by the British for their colonial expansion needs.
India did a great mistake by accepting Tibet as an autonomous region of PRC :( they should understand that china is not going to change the relationship but if Tibet got freedom, it will be the best friend of India even over Russia and Israel...

What you heard from western media are shameless lies. Tibet was under the rule of Yuan Dynasty in the 10th century. It is also under the rule of Qing Dynasty for nearly 300 years. In 1911 when Sun Yat Sen and Chinese National Party took over China from Qing Dynasty through revolution, Tibet was under the rule Republic of China until end of Chinese Civil War in 1949 when Chiang Kai Shek and ROC government escaped to Taiwan after losing the Civil War to Chinese Communist Party under Mao. 1950 PLA entered Tibet to take over Tibet after People's Republic of China was established. @Tsar Marklovski The thing is Tibet has been under Chinese rule continuously since year 1636 (the western media says China invaded Tibet in 1950 is a big lie) while British empire collapsed in 1960s and USSR collapsed in 1989. Both Britain and Russia wanted to invade Tibet in 1900 but failed badly. There are huge pieces of territories to the northeast and northeast of China that were invaded and occupied by Russia. Do you guys know that every term of Dalai Lama was actually appointed by Chinese Central Government? And even this term of Dalai Lama was appointed in 1940 after being selected as the candidate through some strict religious process. It was on Feb. 5th of 1940 that 拉木顿珠 was officially appointed as the new Dalai Lama. Wu Zhongxin ( Chairman of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission Of Chinese Central Government at the time) was sent to Tibet to supervise Dalai Lama's Enthronement Ceremony in 1940. Talk to the Tibetan locals and dig into the historical information to see how he was welcomed in Tibet and where he was sitting on the Enthronement Ceremony day. Some of the Tibetan high class people were heavily influenced by British ideas, since British had invaded Tibet many times, Dalai Lama's teacher, who was in power instead of Dalai Lama since 1935, was killed by the Tibetan separatists in 1947. And later on this young Dalai Lama was then surrounded by the separatists. The separatists were mostly people who owned most lands and slaves in Tibet, even Dalai Lama's family also owned many many lands and slaves then, his family was from a very poor village very close to Xining (the capital city of Chinese Qinghai province), and he has 7 siblings including himself, and all of them barely speak fluent Tibetan( only few Tibetan words, the most people in his native village were Chinese Hui and Han ethnic, and Chinese is the native language for most of them), how you guys can believe that a poor family which even cannot feed themselves at the time won a very big lottery to become the nobles in Tibetan society and got tremendous lands and slaves as their private property could easily give up all of these? And so were all the other nobles and landlords and slave owners in Tibet. One thing to remind you, over 95% of population in Tibet then were actually slaves.
