It sounds like you are pressing the submission button (Y on Xbox, Triangle on PS5) you have to press A on xbox, Square on playstation instead.

I can't do the heavy attack it keeps doing a clothesline or a knee to the midsection

You might be doing the heavy attack button first, make sure you do light attack a couple of times and then press the heavy attack for the combo.
