Especially the high-ground example. High-ground is map-dependent. Some maps like Watchpoint: Gibraltar are full of verticality. Others, like whatever that enclosed variant of Nepal is called (maybe Sanctum?) basically have none. Immobile brawl/rush tanks will be better on the latter and worse on the former. The inverse for mobile dive tanks, whose mobility comes at the cost of worse capacity to brawl head-on. Map variety is critical for the game not to feel samey. Characters being map-dependent is fine. Not every hero needs to be equally strong on every map. It is not what causes the swapping problem. Picking one-of-many suitable heroes for the map you are on, once, at the beginning of the game, does not have you incessantly switching characters on every death... that is the result of shitty rock-paper-scissors design that has to do with specific matchups being unplayable on one side. Take Hog vs Mauga. Or Hog vs Ana+Zen (god help you if it's Mauga+Ana+Zen). Sometimes even just Ana can be enough, since Nade + focus fire from DPS is pretty lethal on its own (keep in mind Suzu CD being longer than Nade). The mitigation tools of someone like Sigma are such that it is not a death sentence for him, since he doesn't use his HP bar. Juggling Barrier and Grasp can stall out Nade. Hog is just fucked because his tool is healing-based and the damage reduction alone just isn't enough. Ball has similar issues with undodgeable hard CC, most notably Sombra hack. The problem is how lopsided those matchups are relative to all the rest. If you buff them to the point of being viable vs their counters, they are just OP vs everyone else. If they are balanced vs everyone else they are dogshit vs their counters. The ONLY actual solution is to individually tune the problematic matchups to make the specific heroes stronger *only* against their counters (with the goal of turning them into skill matchups) and keeping the strength the same vs all others. How about they give Ball a general CC reduction passive, but as compensation, make him squishier? How about they give Hog's Breather a new effect, something like "while active, reduces effectiveness of debuffs by x%". Now maybe Nade will reduce healing by 80% instead of 100% (when Breather is being used). Maybe Discord Orb will nuke him less and Mauga burn will do less damage. But in return, they could nerf its % damage reduction, its healing amount, its depletion rate, its recharge rate... they could make it reduce Hog's movement speed while active (like Orisa Fortify) and they could nerf Hog's health bar. They could play around with the numbers as much as they want but the concept is simple: remove the imbalance of how a hero can be in a good spot vs almost all of the cast, but borderline unplayable vs a handful of picks, which creates a balancing nightmare and a miserable gameplay experience.
dude no joke, I did the exact same thing yesterday. I thought it was only me that was LITERALLY getting counter swapped as tank every single game and I got so tired of it I started counter swapping every time they swapped. I'm so over tank because of this its miserable. Especially with there only being 1 tank, if you get countered what can you really do. They either need to bring back 2 tanks (they won't) or make tanks less counterable towards one another. It's pretty ridiculous how you play well first push and instantly get countered.
Honestly this one was a cool one to watch. Just gameplay, the normal gripes but no non-stop complaining like most streamers. I swear all they do is bitch over a dead game. I don't understand why people are against counter swap. The game let's you switch heroes at any point... what do you think the purpose is? To change your character to something less capable of beating the opponent?
How many games of support or dps you get you are forced to swap back to back? Exactly, none. The problem is not counter swap, it's the fact the game plan to win pretty much involves countering the enemy tank, and this is not fun to anyone.
Overwatch is like a corporation amongst games - all that counts is to climb the ladder, being a winner and calculations you need to do to get it, all while being enslaved and played with by powers above you not to mention being forced to play the game their way or no way. Your individuality is out of a window and you get burnt out a lot quicker than you would normally do. Feeling confused and hopeless is just an icing on the cake. And they blame you for acting out when you do and make up punishments because its easier than to take responsibility and fix things. It's such a great simulator of corporate spirit but a bad game. Worst game I've ever played honestly.
I'm Plat in tank and support rn. The players are all clueless and slow brained. Elo hell is very very real. Can confirm. Going from top 500 dps to playing in Plat lobbies is insanely different.. they have no clue.
I kid you not my entire experience playing Pharah has been doing nothing but spamming a choke and then when I finally decide to use the only mechanic that makes her unique I insta die- And with so many characters that just shut her down, she should remain untouched lol
Nah people want her nerfed because she's lame to play against and play with. When you're playing against her, if you don't have a shield / DM and you're playing any low mobility hero, you'll just eat damage boosted rockets. If you're playing with her, she'll most likely have a mercy pocket and your team has 1 less healer. If enemy has doom fist, good luck, you're the only dps on the ground. If enemy has pharah, wow that's on you too buddy unless your pharah is some top 500 projectile god hitting airshots.

One that probably won't ever get addressed tbh cause it's Mercy.
saying this before the "nerf" is absolutely wild, pharah at this point had a 58% win rate according to blizz, she was the most broken dps in the game and still is since they barely "nerfed" her kit, but also they nerfed cass damage falloff

"Counterwatch" is the worst thing to happen to the game because Overwatch's launch motto was that no hero in the game should be a counter to another.
