  • An in-depth study of the Book of Enos. This lesson focuses on what it might have been like to be raised by a parent like Jacob, the return of the prodigal, nurture and admonition, wrestling before God, soul hunger, sweeping guilt away, and more. Brother Jared! Please continue to look at us, at me, through the camera. Look at me through the camera.... Speak to me!! Don't let the professionals take the camera away from the connection between you and me... Teacher, continue to look at me... This has been a personal relationship for 4 yrs... Please keep it this way!!

Brother Jared…to me now, as a prodigal son…the most important thing that Enos came to understand was that his personal wrestle was necessary to know his own standing with God. This is true for every one of us, no matter our circumstances..our agency we need to come to recognize is ours to exercise…according to our faith. Thank you so much for the last four years…your dedication to your faith has strengthened mine each day. We love you brother…keep up the good work👍. Short or long..the Spirit shines through❤️😇. David

Agreed. And, the light background was more inviting than the dark. The sound even seemed more distant. But, maybe the other is far more familiar, and change can be hard. Either way, we love Jared.

I know you are going for a certain style with the second camera but it needs to go. It’s not right for this podcast. This podcast needs to be done with him looking at the “4th wall.” As soon as he looks off center we feel distanced from him as if he is talking to someone else and not us. Style shouldn’t trump substance. Please take the feedback.

I hope this comes out the correct way, I enjoy having 'comfortable' discussions about the Gospel, like talking with my Dad. I had years (good years) of learning from great Religion teachers at BYU, but that was then and in that environment. Today I need a friend who can help me learn even more deeply about the Gospel. Sometimes when when "Professionals" get involved they try to change things to look more "Professional". New is not always better. Thanks for all your hard work and treat teaching.

I agree; I’m not liking the indirect camera angle.
Being so far removed from the population of the saints (in another country in the middle of nowhere), it was such a blessing and a strength to have one on one, and eye to eye study and conversation.
I’m now just a fly on the wall listening to you speak to unknown others. The eye contact was important; it’s not the same. 😢
I’ll keep listening, but would rather not watch the video.

Have to agree with previous comments, I used to feel you were talking to me personally now it all looks staged, it is not your natural face anymore with all the shadows. I found you on your first video and have watched you faithfully ever since, I have learned more from you in the last four years than the previous fifty years of my membership in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I think all of your followers appreciate that things had to change for you and your family, and we have to accept that fact, however these changes are not an improvement in any way, what you produced in your own home was far better than the so called professionals have come up with. I will be watching your old videos I am so happy they are still available, God bless you brother Jared for all you do to help people like me to understand and enjoy the scriptures.

I shook your hand and thanked you for being there for me when I was struggling after the W/W conference in Salt Lake City. I just couldn't tell you how much you have helped me. The 23rd of June 2019 My husband and I came home from church while I was hanging up his suit he went into the kitchen and had a blood clot stop his heart. I had a neighbor that was a widow who helped me try to get myself together and she died that December. Then Covid hit. I do not have any children that live close so I was struggling not having anything normal not even church, then I found you. You helped save me. I have a son that is in Kentucky you has left the faith sence his father's passing so you have helped me with that also So Thank You So Much!

Please adjust the lighting so your full face is in equal light and remove the giant microphone as well as your suit coat. Dear Brother Halverson I am so glad that you have the help and support of Faith Matters. It will streamline the production of your lessons which we all love.
I have been with you for 4 years now and you have been a constant in my scripture study every week.
I would just like to say that maybe the team at Faith Matters might try and replicate the very personal approach we have come to love rather than replicating the way most others produce their lessons.
The side angles, the lighting and the mike tend to lessen the feeling that you are speaking directly to each of us.
It won’t stop me from watching and following your lessons but it saddens me to not have that same feeling of closeness.
With love and great appreciation for your time and love for us.

Bro. Halverson your lessons and insights are amazing!! I have learned sooo much!!
I have two observations of your new setup. I have little production knowledge so I can only observe how I feel. First, the lighting casts too much shadow. It feels like it’s nighttime to me. Also when you look to the side I understand perhaps it’s to make us feel that others are there listening too… but I miss your person to person connection as you look into my (our) eyes. Of course your content is the most important!!

I have to add my voice to the many. Your words can work their way through any studio setting ‘old or new’ into our hearts…however I loved the rolled up sleeves, bright room lighting, straight-on look that was the ‘old’ version. It made the gospel feel tangible and for ‘each of us’ to discover for ourselves. This ‘new’ version feels hard-edged with the lighting and impersonal with the camera angles. The MIC does not bother me as it is a necessary tool.
Still ❤️you and will keep watching/listening.
So glad you will have more time for your family!!

I don’t think members get enough credit on the love they spread. They are always beat down because they need to be more accepting, or more inclusive.
Of course they should. However, I have tattoos on my arms and back, came from a wild background. 7 years ago I came back to Christ. I have never felt judged or belittled by members when I had my own conversion and came back.
Also, I live in Utah where it is supposedly the worst “church culture”.
I commend Latter Day Saints for their love and compassion that’s never been seen before at this scale of magnitude.
Also, on the contrary, calling others to repentance, including our kids. Holding them to a higher standard and not giving in to the world.
I love what you taught between nurture and hard love.
What a hard balance it is to provide both sides. I struggle with that as a dad, I’m way too soft all the time. Especially with my daughters.
I sustain your teachings today, thank you!

Thank you so much for this lesson. All my children left the church, and this lesson has helped me so much. I once had a LDS therapist tell me it would all be OK “Your job in this life if to love them. Have faith in God, he knows them better than you. Keep praying for them and loving them. “ I have a great relationship with all four of them. I still wish everyday they would come back into the church. This lesson helped remind me of what my therapist said. They are pretty good kids. They do a lot of service in their communities and love people, and are happy. I now concentrate on what we have in common. I pray one day we can all go to the temple together. I am in the waiting patiently phase.
Thank you for reminding me of what I need to do.

This is all new, so there will be some things to work out on the production side of things, lighting, LARGE Shure SM7B microphone, etc. As an audio guy, based on content and what this is, a hardwired lav mic would be a better choice. Yesterday morning I got a text from my daughter saying I had hurt her feelings, but we just need to move forward. I had no idea what I have done but it shook me to my soul beause I felt I needed to know what I had done and then correct it.. Then I watched this life saving lesson on parenting. Oh my heart. I felt the Lord teaching me instantly what I needed to do and not what I felt I should do. I need to let her wrestle in her wilderness away from me. Thank you for your helping me open my heart to this powerful example of how to parent. Letting the Lord work his mighty miracles and allowing her to discover them however long it will take. This was a HUGE miracle for me in the moment I needed it. Words just can't justly explain it. But thank you with all my heart and soul. He is truly in the intimate moments of our lives. How I love Him and His glorious gospel. Thank you.

Between that and your videos it helps me keep my faith. So thank you. Knowing the gospel is true.. and not being able to live it cause of addiction even though I try. I’ll tell you.. it’s like heart break. Anyways that’s my spill. Thank you to all of you saints!

Amen. As an addict in recovery, and as an ordinance worker in the Temple today….I lean daily on the Lords faith that allowed Him, alone to overcome the world…one thought at a time, one choice at a time, one prayer at a time…He is there, He knows every struggle, and He has not or will He ever forget you. Through His preparations of Atonement..He wants to bring everyone of us home to Our Heavenly Father…I know that He keeps every promise😇❤️. Keep up the good work👍. David

We are all weak. It is hard to feel worthy, but I've worked to not dwell on my constant mess-ups, but rejoice that all God requires is a broken heart and a contrite spirit. I'm sure you are offering that every day. Christ has you. You are covered by HIS righteousness. He is offering to be judged in your place. Rejoice in your weaknesses, for in your weakness he is strong.

I will also add my testimony to David. I too am an addict in recovery. I also work in the temple and am serving as a Bishop of a newly formed ward.
His mercy and His love for you is real. They are both infinite and very intimate.
Trust the steps. Lean on those around you for support… but most importantly, lean on your Savior and His atonement for strength, hope and healing.
There are brighter days ahead Brother on your journey as you come to trust the Lord and His strength and mercy.
God be with you on your journey.

    Brother Halverson,
First let me say I love your podcast and have been listening to it ALL every week for several years. As a semi professional photographer I want to say your new studio, lighting and multiple camera angles are spot on if you are taking a professional head shot. But for me, you have gone from a very personal and intimate feeling to a very sterile and impersonal feeling. In my job I spend most of my day behind the wheel so I listen while driving. I will continue to listen, I just won’t look at the screen as often. 😉. Keep up the great work!

Set up: Old way, new way, doesn’t really matter to me, anymore than the recent replacement of the white scriptures with black scriptures in the temple here in my hometown (same amazing scriptures inside the covers;). I just found you this year btw. I’m enjoying going back and listening to past lessons as we revisit these amazing chapters in the Book of Mormon. Your content Brother Halverson, is wonderful!! I was a prodigal son myself. I wondered lost until my soul hungered. I knew where to look to be fed because my parents taught me where to look and in whom to trust. I resonate with your analogies or metaphors here. I have 9 of my own prodigals now and a new daughter in law and 2 grand-prodigals. It’s the number one concern on my heart and mind these days. I see inklings in some of them but I often wonder what I’ve done so wrong to have caused so many of my children to wonder from the path. I know, not my fault. Or is it? I love my children with all my heart. They love me with the all theirs. We’ve got that. I’m going to start praying that my children’s souls will hunger and thirst. I’d love to hear your take on the most recent conference talks, especially President Nelson’s and Elder Holland’s. I feel an ever increased urgency to come unto Christ and partake in a higher and holier way. I want so badly for my children to partake with me. Thanks again!

In regards to revelations "the church is full of that"... I testify that's true. This is a church of miracles and miracles and revelations happen often, and to those that dont feel like they do, my suggestion is to look forward with faith in Christ, and pay attention to those in the church that do have them... like this guy on the screen lol. Perhaps your spiritual gifts are different, and if they are, they are needed in the kingdom so that those who have recognized the miracles in there lives can benefit from your gifts and have more confidance in sharing what they know to be true.

Thank you so much Brother Jared for your incredible desire to share your wealth of knowledge with us! You are doing what Jacob said to do, to "think of your brethren like unto yourselves, and be free with your substance, that they may be rich like unto you!"
And I love your thoughtful questions about the lives of these amazing prophets of the Book of Mormon, wondering about the life of Enos... why was he wrestling? I feel like Jacob gave us a clue about the personality of his son when he said at the end of chapter 7; that Enos "promised obedience unto the commands" perhaps he felt like he had failed to live up to that promise. I know I feel like this often and repent much, because I cannot live the Gospel as perfectly as I wish I could and would. Thank you a million times over for your insight, love and wisdom in helping us to draw closer to the Spirit!

This year studying The Book of Mormon, it seems that the idea has been stressed is a positive way, about the need for deeper roots.
Jacob had deeper roots because of his upbringing. The need to find a safe place made him hunger and thurst- his parents and some of his brothers knew how to help him find what he needed in The Gospel. I have found my answers in The Gospel too.
In studying Isaiah - it seems, that it was because the people of his day were distracted by the world and wanting to be excepted by their fellow human beings.
In a podcast about Jews being
converted to Christianity on of the 2 converts said - it's better to be excepted by God than to be excepted by other people.
That was so beautiful to me -.
Like the answer to their whole
    problem.
I suppose that's it's actually the answer for all of us.

Something struck me this week as I read this section. In Omni, near the end, it is mentioned that there were many false prophets and anti-Christs. It did not occur to me before that moment that from the time of Koriantumr to Nehor there WERE other people, and satan was tuning his approach until it clicked and he could build on it.
    Worth remembering!

Hey Brother Jared I love your sessions with us, it has carried me from the start of COVID to this week. Forgive me here, as want to give a suggestion as for the bookcase behind you...being a decorator I have to share this thought with you/wife etc stage hands etc...Lol. Please EXCHANGE PLACES WITH THE SET OF BLACK BOOKS AND THE CHRISTUS.......To many this will be a WHAT??? But to the visual of the set, placement of items is important to balance of the scene. The reason for exchanging places with The Christus and the what appear to black books is for the CHRISTUS to be on the other side for the SOFTNESS OF VISUAL OF IT. There is not interference of that gentle scenario. With the books in the new place on the bookshelf, it will merge the MICROPHONE that is stretched across the CHRISTUS......I think you will understand fully if you take notice to what I am explaining. The microphone is making the CHRISTUS to APPEAR TO BE nothing important in the visual in fact it is so annoying to not have it as one of the STANDING TALL SO TO SPEAK VISUAL OF CHRIST HIMSELF in the background setting of the bookcase. Thank you for listening to my suggestion......there really is a reason to exchange place's with those 2 objects........The microphone set up will blend nicely into the books and those who are annoyed iwth it, will/may appreciate that change. Blessings and so grateful for your many lessons. You are so very much appreciated and came onto the scene.......at a critical time for us homebounds to not lose out on your special talents and abilities. Sister Maggie

I was thinking as this new era of Unshaken begins, how grateful I am for the last 4 years of verse by verse, which allows me to now more fully understand the context of this new shortened version that is able to dive so deep into personal context in our day.
It reminds me of the chart you used with Jacob 5 where there are the 4 layers, or ways of looking. It helps so much to have the historical context and the alligorical context of the last 4 years, so that we are ready for the moral and analogical context that we are now able to more fully understand and relate to.

I want to extend my gratitude for your depth of knowledge and insight in the scriptures. It is refreshing to me to "sit at your feet" and be nourished by the good word. Especially, since both my Father and Father-in-law have crossed the veil. I have truly missed that patriarchal wisdom in them. I typically am not a commenter, but wanted to let you know that a few of us saints in Las Vegas cherish your expounding of the scriptures! With that being said, and perhaps it is because of the artist in me, as beautiful as your new "stage" is, I am finding some things distracting and cannot focus on your words. I find that Rembrandt lighting is best left for photos. The soft lighting is nice, but the shadows on your face add a mysteriousness to you, which makes my mind wander. I also think a mic lapel is far less distracting than the stationary mic that fills up quite a bit of the frame. The 2 camera angles are reminding me of General Conference, however, by you not looking into each of them as the angle switches, I feel like I'm losing that personal connection to you, because you aren't looking at me. That's what I loved about your previous recordings. I felt as if I were sitting across from you in a personal, comfortable home environment. Anyway, I'm very grateful for your sacrifice of time and effort and to all those saints who help to edify one another. 😃

At about 42 minutes: this is why Family Home Evening is so important. We let the kids give lessons, too. We played games and had treats. It was all fun, and if my husband and I were late getting started, some child would ask, "Aren't we having Family Home Evening tonight?" We sailed Tupperware boats in the bathtub for the Jaredites, built city walls with blocks that we marched around, then shouted, and kicked the walls down, and dad dressed up in his black belt gear as we learned about the armor of God. We made so many mistakes, but I think those family nights made all the difference in the world.

@andydduncan I just read this chapter the other night and wondered if there is a double meaning in Enos's use of the word "cry." Did he cry and shed tears that day as he wrestled? I think it's quite likely he did."
I believe you are correct, that Enos did "...cry and shed tears" because of how strongly he was most likely feeling the spirit at that time and why because he was wanting to know with his whole soul what his standing before God was at that time and the Holy Spirit greatly impressed upon him that he was right with God and he shed tears of joy. I don't know that for sure but that is what I like to think. So it is just my humble opinion. But certainly he also cried unto the Lord as in he raised his voice loud and clear up to the sky that "it reached the heavens" as the scripture basically says so that it most likely may have looked like he was shedding tears of sorrow or something. Just my observation.

In growing up and learning about Enos, I always pictured him in my mind as a young man who was struggling to gain a testimony. I think this is because Enos was always held up as an example we should follow to obtain our own testimony of the Book of Mormon. Now that I'm older, and have had more time to contemplate, I suspect Enos was experiencing some pre-ministry anxiety. I find parallels with the experience we read in the biography of Spencer W. Kimball where he "wrestled" to have the spiritual manifestation he felt was appropriate for his calling as an Apostle.
I believe those things that make Enos sound unsure or uncertain are more likely manifestations of his humility than any spiritual underdevelopment. This is evidenced by the fact that he had revealed to him that which he was to pray for; namely, the same things his Fathers had prayed for: that the words of God would be preserved for their posterity.
Thank you Brother Halverson. Your lessons and insights mean a lot to me.
