    The filter layers are set up perfectly! However, with a vertical arrangement, water can bypass the coarse sponge and go straight into the aquarium. This makes the second and third layers less effective. It's better to arrange the layers horizontally so it will be step by step filtration.

    When I do next weeks water change I'll finally finish my pimped out HOB. I've taken a few of your tips and combined them. I've done it slowly to not remove too much BB at once. I have an overstocked malawi tank with fish that I love and I gotta look out for my boys!! Another great video, sir.

      @@HaYNFishKeeper I have an Emporer 400. It's just like the Penguin you did, but it has 2 compartments for media. I bought a few factory filters back in April and the last ones are in now. I'm due to change out next week and will finish my upgrade then. I've done half already....I changed out the grey boxes for macro foam and blue filter pad. And I know you're a "biowheel? Schmiowhell" guy, but I like my biowheels. 🤣🤣 I personality enjoy the trickle sound. I know they're not really necessary now so I probably won't replace if they break.

    I'm doing a mod for a topfin silentstream 75 for a 55g tank I'm setting up tomorrow. Learned it on YT....just cutting a piece of plexiglass to block the water flow from the right chamber and use the right chamber for mechanical filtration and the left for biological. Hopefully it works fine. I had bought a seachem tidal 110 to run in place of yhe topfin, but now I'm going to save it for a future tank.

      @Ha Y N Fish Keeper question for you..someone else mentioned to just put bio media in the bottom then sponges on top of that. I thought the biological filtration should come last. Plus the water comes in mid level so it would miss most of the biological and just hit the mechanical then back in the tank. Am I missing something? I'm still fairly new to the hobby

    • @otallono
      @otallono 10 місяців тому

      @@FishRfunhe did put the bio media last, I don't think he can help what a random "someone else" said. As far as where the water goes in you're right, it's a terribly flawed system. The water in mine goes in actually closer to the top. And it seems no one realizes how this doesn't make any sense.

    Whats the difference in prefilter and bio filter media? 🥴

    • @HaYNFishKeeper

  • @edwardsdeacon
    @edwardsdeacon 4 роки тому +1

    Those bio-rings are only good for pre-filtration. Pot scrubbers should only be used as pre-filtration as well. They serve no actual purpose otherwise because the lack the surface ares to support enough beneficial bacteria. Pumice would be better to use as biological media and can only be matched by Biohome media. Just use a handful of the ceramic rings loose in the bottom. Then cover them with coarse foam and then fine foam. That’s all that’s actually needed.
    Putting everything on its side like it is in this filter doesn’t provide any actual filtration the water bypasses the fine foam and gos straight though the coarse foam. Just make a grid for the slots in the filter and put fine foam in front of it and rings behind it.

    I just about bust a gut when I saw the thumbnail 🤣 I've also been checking out your hat game lately, nice job! But the coconut is still my fave. I like this video, but I wonder how much flow there actually is through the media sock. Those sponges tho, I've seen them elsewhere and I really like the idea. I bought a used 65g a while ago and it came with what the sellers called a "trickle filter", which turns out to be some kind of sump. They used what appears to be crinkled strips of carbon paper in the trickle part, and I don't really want that, but haven't figured out what to use instead. Those sponge scrubbies might work.... Hmmmm 🤔
