"HEY MISTAH J DONT YOU WANNA REV YOUR HARLEY " I never got that joke until I got older.
One day. ONE DAY. Somehow. I'll hear Sal introduce a show by saying, "..and today we have our guest, Alan Moore."
...and I will die laughing because of episodes like this.
Jeff Batista He needs to just come on here lol
Introducing Harley Quinn to the Batman mythos was one of the best things to happen.
It was like when the world was eating Peanut Butter sandwiches, until one night the Jelly Fairy impregnated everyone's sandwich, and that's when everyone was like: "Mmmm. Yeah, this is the best. There's no going back from this."
I am not very good with analogies.
Just Some Guy with a Mustache Jelly Jizz huh? Seems legit.
I love this video, it shows exactly what I think of Harley. I love her original personality; she is a deep character. She is an abused girlfriend, I don't think there are any other characters that represent such a real situacion so well. New fans have a hard time understanding this.
Video editor Sal is really starting to come into his own lately. Those signature zoom-ins on reaction faces, which I think we should begin referring to as Pop!-cuts, really brought this episode to a new level. 3...2...1.......WHAT?!? Awesome episode guys; I loved it as always.
Actually in this episode it was video editor Tiffany! She did an awesome job
That joker fish episode of BTAS is my favorite episode of the show, as it is one of my first introductions to the show (and joker character). The idea that even with batman, and the GCPD around you joker will still find a way to get to you really made me uneasy. SO GOOD!
Mark Hamill has said that he was done playing the Joker after the Arkham series unless they are gonna make a Killing Joke movie (which they are making)
JustDenzell Yeah, he also said he wasn't gonna be voicing joker after City but..... well.... we see how that went.
Wtfninjasfromhell But that was probably because he thought Joker wouldn't appear in Arkham Knight
No, it was most likely planned by Rocksteady and him to keep it a secret, just like the whole Arkham Knight thing
He never actually said that. It was something more along the lines of, it'd be hard to ever top my performance in Arkham City.
JustDenzell It's Mark Hamill. He'd punch himself in the face for a nickel.
In mask of the phantasm joker did kill that one mobster sal the Wiesel (not comic pop sal) with that grotesque joker toxin. He also killed andrea Beaumont's (the phantasm) father in that flash back when joker was a mobster.
I'm not a fan of the new 52 Harley because I like the Harley who cared for the Joker. They didn't have to be together, but I did like it when she was trying to cure him. That's one of the reasons I found White Knight really interesting, and I personally love the Joker / Harley marriage scene even though it was pretty random.
The new 52 Harley Quinn realized the relationship was abusive and moved on
@@angelusb2066 well, yeah, but it's not just that. New 52 Harley is kind of a different character compared to the original Harley, even if they're both solo. Original Harley is like the "sane" version of Harley.
I love how later in white knight harley and bruce get together. White knight REALLY gives them a lot of chemistry
Even though Alan Moore is my favorite comic writer who I would defend to the death, Sal is the only person that should be allowed to bash him cause its HILARIOUS.
there is actually a little strand of blood on Harleys mouth after she falls in the cartoon
btw, love your show
Wait, did Seal read this comic? "It felt like a kiss,"...from a rose!? Ah-HA, Seal is a genius!
The Two-Face story in Mad Love I think it's called two of a kind is really good.
When is Joker not plotting a murder?
- When he's riding his HARLEY!!
Like most of the people posting TAS was my intro to the character, particularly the restructured "Joker Fish" episode. To answer Ethan's question regarding why The Joker thought he could patent Joker Fish, in both this ep and the original Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams comic story, The Joker used Col. Sanders and KFC as an example as well as inspiration for this scheme prompting commercialization as an obvious punch line to both stories. As for reviewing the Alan Moore Wizard Interview, PLEASE!!! To hear Sal read Alan's comments "in character" would be an outright scream!
The comic was Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers not O’neil/Adams
I could never take Harley seriously as a character or sexy either because of her origin with Joker. She's so weak. I like that they're distancing her and making her a stronger character.
My favorite iteration of Harley is in the Injustice comics especially volume 2, see is still obviously crazy and yet she is without the joker and does her own thing. I also like the Assault on Arkham Harley because she recognized how effed up the Joker acted towards her and she is still violent and crazy.
I love back issues man
dante monaghan Thanks Dante!
dante monaghan Couldn't agree more!
Man, it's good to see Ethan. I can't watch the last Back Issues because I own Quiver and wanted to read it myself before watching you guys.
Harley Quinn is such a fantastic character, makes me sad about what they've been doing to her lately.
See you at Garden State Comic Fest! :D
After watching Batman Beyond return of the Joker he always freaked me out.
The best part of this episode was the last 30 seconds, hearing Sal just rag on Alan Moore. Hahaha....
The Harley/Ivy thing on TAS always seemed weird to me. Not because my 9-year-old mind couldn't fathom the sexual elements, but because Ivy was so unlikable and overbearing that it seemed she was forcing Harley to be around her. Though, admittedly, the end of that one episode where they're waltzing around in just t-shirts made it much easier for me to deal with. Philosophically, of course.
To me, Ivy came off as a feminist trying to talk Harley into ditching her abusive relationship with the Joker. Before Ivy, Harley's cause was Joker's and she made her see she could do bad all on her own -- for her own reasons. Who needs a man to become a successful criminal anyway?
Hazel Contreras Oh, she was definitely all about the "who needs men" thing (which was as much her core trait as the plant stuff), but using that line with Harley always felt uncomfortably selfish of Ivy. And I guess that was what my child's mind back then didn't yet have the experience to categorize: Ivy wasn't concerned about helping Harley--she wanted to convert her.
My first introduction to her was the cartoon, in fact, my first introduction to Batman was the cartoon. Been my favorite hero ever since.
That rant on Alan Moore at the end. XD. Priceless. ....and amen.
I'd love to see a back issues on Harleen because that is also definitive
Introducing Harley Quinn- like making chocolate tastier
Pairing her up with Poison Ivy & giving her enhanced skills- Like adding peanut butter to said chocolate
Palmiotti & Connor's take on them- Thanks for the King Sized peanut butter chocolate!!
Also one of the "don't really find harley attractive" camp she's beautiful yes but her personality is terrifying to the point of overcoming her beauty to me
That book sounds awesome. I'll admit that the line, it felt like a kiss, put a tear in my eye.
The Batman Adventures comic was always pretty neat, the first issue I read showed Bats crouching on this crate with his cape draped in front, so the bad guys thought they were shooting him and he was all "come at me, crime". It was pretty awesome.
Great video, love the history lessons.
I really don't remember when I first saw her exactly, but the first long exposure that I ever had of her was arkham asylum watching my brother play it for the first time (that series has since become my favorite video game series of all time)
I love these back issues episodes. Hope you guys do Batman: Shaman some day!
19:56 This is a classic The Weekly Planet rant about how the hero uses lethal force on non-human human-shaped things (like robots or logs), but aren't aware that they're non-human. So weird.
And to think, Harley would one day get a multi year cartoon series about her relationship with Poison Ivy
I was first introduced to Harley Quinn through the Animated Series. With you Sal, I'm not really attracted to Harley Quinn, didn't particularly like her costume change in the Arkham series, though I've kinda warmed up to the Arkham Knight costume and the roller-derby one she's using now in the comics.
Actually Sal , not sound like an ass, she injected him in the episode and people bled more in the new adventures... Love "Back Issues" keep up the good work guys.
Bruce timm and Paul Dini didn't explain how she servived in Return for the joker.
best part of the show (mad love) is when they are leaving the dentist office and joker(mark Hamill) "may the floss be with you" HAhahahAHAHAh
if i didn't live in australia and i had the money i would go to the garden state comic fest because you guys are so funny love the show keep it up :D
She does inject Batman in the episode. He drops to the ground to shield her from the gun and then she stands up and shows the syringe.
I saw Harley on the cartoon show first, which I agree is still a great show that I rewatch episodes every now and then.
My first time seeing Harley was in the animated series and I really liked her. I'm with Sal on not being sexually attracted to her, but I get that other people do. My brother always kind of knew about her despite being younger and not seeing the series when it came out....though he did watch the Birds of Prey series. He liked the Harley in it. Everything else....not so much.
Are you guys going to record your panel like last time? Great episode as always.
-Brandon of the Hazardous Monkeys
We're not sure what the power hookup is going to be, but I'm hopeful. Still, can't promise anything, sadly.
Fair enough, hope all goes well for you guys regardless.
40:33 for SAlan Moore
Its funny that the Riddler thinks he is so smart when people are clearly smarter then him, lol.
I mean Lex Luthor created Bizarro.
Mr. Terrific created a base in the ninth dimension away from aliens and enemies.
Yet he has trouble outsmarting a guy in a cave LOL.
my favorite part is the error message in the background
I want to call this a great Joker story...but it's more of a great Joker foot note. Still...better than a bunch of stories they throw out in regards to what I've built him up in my head as...Animated series was my intro btw.
I just learned that Harley Quinn Smith is literally a week younger than me.
The first time I saw Harley Quinn was in lego Batman 2 and I was like “that’s has to be jokers sidekick”
My first intro to Harley was in the animated show the Batman, which is my third favorite batman show after Beyond and brave and bold. My first time reading her was in the new 52 suicide squad, where she wore mainly just a corset that was way too small for her chest.
i dont see a problem with her outfit in suicide squad - heterosexual male
The Goddamn Batman
I also rather enjoyed it at first, but after an volume or two i began to become distracted while reading it with the belief that if she moved wrong her whole top would just burst off. I can appreciate DC deciding to try and make her a more overtly sexual character, but that costume and her banging Deadshot for no reason was going overboard in my humble opinion.
Ian McKee haha, i can understand. generally womens clothing in games Comics etc most of the time is impractical and dumb. wonder woman for example, i can definitly appreciate her Outfit (:3) but she is an Amazon warrior princess! she should have an armor or atleast a pair of Jeans or whatever. but pff, why complain, you know? :D
The last part of this video was hilarious.
Sandman, Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Hellblazer, Alias. All 90s comics. Yes there was a lot of garbage in the 90s, but there was also some of the greatest comics of all time.
Alias was the early 2000's, but it's true that there is a nice sampling of good stuff from the 90's. Heck, every decade has great stuff. But you can't deny the disproportionate amount of garbage released during the 90's, particularly in mainstream publishing.
Eh, I'd still read the worst 90's comics from the big two over most of the shit they've been produced this decade. DC just finally got good again in the last two years and Marvel... yeah...
You guys should do a Punisher story on Back Issues.
I love the direction that Harley Quinn has taken as a character over the years since her introduction. I think she's a much better fit nowadays being detached from Joker and being her own thing.
Didn't notice that there have been shelves sneaking into the sides of the screen until this episode. I think that this operation began at about Irredeemable Ant-man.
Funny enough, Harley is somewhat of a rip off of the character known as Prank from the 90s Flash TV series where she was the crazy obsessed "girlfriend" of the Trickster also played by Hamil.
Goddammit, I still need to watch that episode.
I believe the last 2 had the prank who was the girlfriend, before that It was the love interest dressed up in a costume
Animated series and i thought she was irritating the first tine i saw her but now she is just so adorable to me now and yes the first suit is the best suit it's just the right ammount of playful that really sets her apart
Sal I have a question to ask you about the Joker and I have been wondering this for years. How come the joker says that he loves batman and that he doesn't want to kill him, but then he plans to kill him in the shows, in the games and in the comics?, btw love back issues.
I’m going to buy Mad Love ❤️ thanks you guys! This is my favorite channel btw
What elements make people like a character, especially villains, how do people describe how they like they're favorite characters even of they don't always win.
I think No Man's Land is where she first appears in the regular continuity?
Mark Hamill said that he retired the role as joker,Troy Baker the voice for every video game character has added another character to his roster as he has done Arkham Origins and Knight as long as Assault on Arkham,My opinion on Baker is that he sounds like Mark Hamill so no harm no foul
He lives in Maine? Stephen King confirmed!
That's what I was thinking!
Whao, we still had the Batman:animated series in Canada. I wanna say we also had fox.
Oh yeah Canada had it's shit together. When i lived in the North woods of Maine the only way I could watch the Simpsons was on CBC because our cable provider didn't carry FOX until 1997. They claimed trees interfered with the FOX signal which was an obvious lie, they just didn't want to pay for it, until FOX aired the Superbowl and then suddenly it appeared in our cable lineup...
Oh gosh, cbc. Talk about boring.
Can't wait for all the tangents from this episode
I was first introduced to her way back in the Batman tas
the Alan Moore ending was the Cherry on the pie to the face
I loved the video but I only hit the like button because of how you ripped into Allen Moore at the end
Should I be reading comic books or watching Back Issues?
Watching Back Issues it is then.
Do batman no mans land
I honestly miss the classic jester costume.
I am Canadian and watched Batman Adventures when it came out. It was on cable tv. So, being Canadian is not an excuse to not watch it. lol
I also never found Harley attractive, she was innocent, funny and very mischievous but never did I find her sexy, Poison Ivy on the other hand is a whole different story lol
Green Lantern Rebirth or Sinestro War !
I was actually introduced by Arkham Asylum. Such a great game.
I also don't find Harley attractive and I first saw her in the animated series. I used to own alot of btas on vghs and I thought Harley was a boss
Theres blood in the show to i think
Yes!! I love this story!!
Awesome episode! I do however want to hear Moore about that article...
Could you guys do Barman and Dracula Red Rain
Never thought I’d say this, but Joker got Ben Riley’d
This is gonna be weird but I was first introduced to harry Quin in a old Cartoon Network online game when it was you as batman jumping from rooftop to rooftop defeating the jokers chattering teeth and when you beat them all harley quin shows up with her hammer and then you defeat her.
This book I am soooo happy also I let this girl I had a crush on borrow my copy of this book and never got it back ;(
The cartoon show I don’t remember which episode. I think it was Harly’s Holiday episode.
Henchgirl #2.
I'm kinda the opposite. I like her classic costume, but I think Harleys best look is the Arkham Games. I really love Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn too.
Harley does inject Batman in the cartoon episode also. Go back and watch it
Isn't this the same episode where Batman laughs at Harley and calls her a fool?
That's what I was thinking. If that's the case he also laughs at Harley menacingly and Harley gets spooked but they don't show Batmans face while he's laughing.
idk if you got a new camera or I'm just now watching your video in 720p??? p.s. great video.
Yo did I hear that right? Is Ethan a Mainer? If that's the case then that's awesome
"I'm thinking 'not shit' 😂"
Hey you guys should come out to Animate Miami!
Sal never mentioned how Batman was trying to tell Harley that Joker's story was BS.
I’m Pretty Sure That She Bleeds In The Animated Series As Well
I find it that Harley was prob an orphan who has never had real parents or not good ones .Ivy seem to wanna take care of her cause Ivy can't have babies.
Ivy can't have kids? I didn't know that. Is it because of the plant thing, or was she already unable to have kids?
She can't have kids because of her toxic skin. She can get pregnant but she would basically have to find a male version of her for it to work but even then the baby would die inside her
Early in the episode sal says that they animated the comic into an episode, and they reacted like, eh whatever. Later he says it again and they react like its amazing? Were they not listening or is it due to the editing?
Ben just wasn't paying attention when Sal said it the first time lol
My favorite Batman story
As far as I remember, my introduction to Harley Quinn was probably the Batman/Superman: World's Finest movie that I had on VHS back in the day (to give some perspective, I was born in '95).
And to be honest, I've never really been a huge fan of her. She's fine, I guess, but she always irritated me. So much so that nowadays, I tend to avoid Harley-centric episodes when watching through B:TAS. But then again, I was never THAT into The Joker either. So maybe it's just something to do with that sort of character, I don't know.
I'm rambling now. I'll stop.
Do you think that Joker actually loves Harley?
I don't, but I think there's plenty of evidence to support both ideas.
+prototypex11z I like to think that the Joker has grown pretty fond of her and likes her more than anyone except Batman, but the Joker is such a psycho that it doesn't really matter much.
This has Aged like a Fine Wine 🔥🔥
First introduction was the cartoon
Ben is the Joker... Damn
