What a great sound! Great work! That drone is awesome! It seems to me that just in easy of playing alone the stick dulcimer renders the mountain lap dulcimer to the role of a historical curiosity?

Thanks for watching....no this is not an attempt to replace the mountain dulcimer..at one time the dulcimer may have been a rare site, but thanks to the folks who have resurrected it, and play it, and cultivate it...long live the mountain dulcimer!!! but this is a variation, an experiment, I would love to be able to replica the sound of a mountain dulcimer in a shape that is more favorable for a guitar player, one of the big problems is scale length....still it is a start, doesn't sound bad, but I think it is miles and miles away from the sweet sound of the dulcimer..
      thanks for watching!!!!!

@@Cj12sings yeah it sounds more like a guitar, with hardly any of that special mountain dulcimer sound that makes it unique...

The main problem with a bass stick dulcimer (as compared to a mountain dulcimer) is that because it is held and played "guitar style" your fingers don't have as much reach as compared to how the mountain dulcimer is played. This is especially an important consideration if you are a chordal player. Some chords on a dulcimer require quite a stretch and some players can't do it. This is the reason most stick dulcimers have a 22.5 inch scale length, to make it easier for chordal players.

Yes, it is quite true and the reason I did not build one for some time, I held off on building a long scale baroque guitar for the same reason...then I figured I could stay close to the frets to get the length I needed to play and the neck was narrow, and then I realized that I wasn't exactly a beginner at playing and just went for it....that said, some chords are impossible but the ones you can get sound nice, and since it is low G, you could play along with he the 22.5 inch scale in G, which might sound cool I am building two short scale sticks now and hope to give it try soon. Thanks for your comment, and interest!!! Happy playin

you can have a 22.5" scale length bass dulcimer....the only think that makes it 'bass' is the thicker strings...i have seen videos of people taking a seagull merlin and putting thick bass strings on it...
