i was on a biking holiday climbing mountains in the French Pyrenees, the trip leader was a guy that trained Ghurkas and other Special forces, he used exactly the same method to get us ordinary riders to climb 3000 metre mountains.
I’m 61 & used to dread climbing but over the yrs I’ve learned to embrace it & now enjoy crushing long, short or steep climbs, I look at it as a challenge & it makes you stronger!
We all spend much more time climbing than descending .. I’d love to watch “ how to” videos about getting up technical climbs. I followed a skilled climber up one of my local trails and was amazed that she cleaned a section I always walked. I asked her to show me how, and now I always clean it. You folks surely have the skills to help us all improve the thing we do the most.. climbing on a mountain bike. ( disclaimer - If my wheels get more than 6 inches off the ground, something unplanned has happened )
Like Isaac I’m the sort of freak who likes climbing… 1/ know your limits, work within them 2/ Use your gears properly, climbing (mostly) should mean no more effort, just going slower in the right gear 3/ make sure your gearing is right for your rides, longer rides and you’ll need a lower lowest gear to keep your bodies efforts within your limits
I love climbing! I enjoy the punishment, and like to earn my descent. Mountain biking for me is a hobby that brings me exercise, and that's motivation for the climb!
Coming from the road, I've discovered it's good to climb with something in reserve so you can punch over a technical section or up an especially steep pitch. If you're at the limit, those features will stop you dead in your tracks!
I love it but I do have an ebike 😅😂. It's perfect as you can tailor your workout. You can still have that challenge and "workout" but you don't have to let it get too much for you.
I’m soooo glad you posted this video because I’m one to hate riding climbs. I think this stems from the pain in the thighs and calves, rather than the breathing.
Yes it is possible to enjoy climbing, on an ebike. Especially on a good uphill trail that is good fun and has right level of tech. On a normal manual bike I started to find the climbs not too bad when I realised its not worth trying to pedal up everything and started walking more, with better pushing technique as well
I guess I'm in it for something different, I like riding out in the middle of nowhere, with no computers, really see the surroundings. Maybe it's better to not know you're about to do a 3 mile climb. The views, the discovery, the mental challenge that you have to find your way back out. Adventure cycling, you're missing a lot if you are just going downhill and worrying about stats all the time.
yeah exactly, this is what i enjoy about sports like mtb, ski touring and hiking. you go in a direction, and you have to get back home. even when you're completely dead, that's where you push your limits and where it becomes interesting
I love mountain bHiking as well. Just love to get up there to see what views I get behind that mountain/hill/forest or whatever. That's way enough motivation for me.
It's not the climbing I love it's the challenge it presents to me. I look at a hill and think there's no way I can get up that and then do my best to try and get up that. There have been a few hills I never thought I would conquer but it may have taken years but there are a few I have eventually gotten to the top of. And it's such a good feeling of accomplishment. Gravity helps you go downhill but it certainly doesn't help you go up
I like the challenge of a steep climb, but hate having to walk it. What helps me is to watch the HR to know when to back off or rest. I've also found that doing wheelies off of small obstacles can help with boredom on long fire road climbs. 😄
Polarising your effort is what you automatically get when you ride a singlespeed bike. You MUST save your energy for the tough climbs, otherwise you will be toast after the first one! Although I don't ride singlespeed too much these days I still ride a bit like it. I think that at the end of the day it teaches you to pace yourself. Oh, and I still love climbing!
After 6 years away from mtb and used to race (slowly) and now I'm heavy. But loving the improvement I feel when I ride. So I never liked climbing even at my fittest but for some reason now I like it as I can see improvement. Maybe it's in the mind, as I ride now because I love it not because I have to train.

I am into mountain biking for the climbing. There's challange and there's reward. Fascinating how you turn sugars and fats into elevation.
I consider climbing as mental rest before going downhill. I noticed that even hard and technical climbs are easier when I relax and try to visualize riding a flat trail! Oh, and the rolling up your shorts trick too!
Not had a chance to watch properly yet, but I'm confused by the section headings. Seems to be missing the two main ways to enjoy climbing, "Book an uplift" and "Buy an ebike"?
Coming from the road, I love climbing. I don't like long descents on the MTB because there is very little pedaling. After more than a handful of minutes I'm missing the effort and just want to go back to pushing on the pedals.
Please make a video swapping frames between Cross-country and Enduro frame while use the parts for Enduro mountain biking. Here in our country, XC frames are typical because we live in a 3rd world country which fewer can afford an Enduro frames. I am one of those. 😂 i have a hardtail XC and will build it for Enduro racing. Ride safe!
Here's how I make climbing easier. Keep every thing as light weight as possible: bike, gear, clothes, and yourself. Just a few pounds can make a big difference. Use the lightest fastest-rolling tires that you can tolerate. Set up the rear suspension just a little on the firm side to minimize pedal bob. Install a a smaller chainring. I love my granny gear with the 28 tooth chainring on the 52 tooth cog.
No need to set up my rear suspension on my hardtail. Fast rolling light tires yes, but not forgetting excellent puncture resistance as otherwise you'll be changing or repairing inner tubes more often than you hope. Messy tubeless is not for me. No need to install a smaller chainring, got it already, a 22T. I have 22,34,42 up front and 12-28 cassette at the rear on my 3x7. Works like a dream on steep climbs plus I don't run out of gears on fast sections of paved roads with a tailwind. And my chain line is always reasonably straight 😁
I’ve recently started to enjoy the climbs, always hated them and still do lol. But I’ve started to learn to like them, but only to a certain extent. My asthma/heart rate gives out before anything else does and it frustrates me beyond belief. My legs can climb/ride all day, but once my heart starts to pound and I can’t catch my breath I’ll be bonked for the rest of the day and not be able to ride properly. I’ve gotten better at pacing myself, but I still can’t do too long of climbs
Pacing yourself is everything - pick a gear at the start of the hill you think you can use to get all the way up, and pick up the pace at the end if you have anything left - starting too fast is mentally and physically a massive mistake
Just something to think about: I've been mtb riding since a teenager. Now, with my age going up, I still love riding, but the climbing is becoming more difficult to my body. So, to continue riding these awesome trails. It may be time for an E-mtb. As I come to my realization, climbing isn't for me anymore.
Any suggestions? 47 year old amateur enduro racer here. I’m about to give up enduro and switch to XC. No idea on what bike I should start out with and I am looking for suggestions. TIA 👍🏻
I just started mountain bike riding again after a couple of years. (In the Army and always training or in another country.) I tried climbing some small hills but lost traction on the rear wheel and fell. How do I get more traction? I was already shifting my weight, but the hill had loose gravel and dirt. Not to mention sharp turns on the downhill I lost traction as well, so, there's that as well. Any tips would be appreciated.
I will never like or enjoy riding uphill. Even on a e-bike. The advantage the e-bike would have would be to get rid of that hateful climb quicker so I can enjoy the downhill.
Slightly off topic...OMG ! I suppose you good people at GMBN would have no idea what fun it is for a 70 year old to climb a hill faster than some are comfortable with going down. I’m talking DIY high power e-bike with throttle. Uphill is a whole new sensation. And it can be very difficult...you need to know when to cut power and use your legs. Well, that how I enjoy climbing on my bike, I added a motor.😮
How do you feel about climbing? Do you love the challenge or hate the hard work? Let us know 👇
I hate it.
i dont mind it for the most part but walking the climbs, i hate doing
yes I hate it and yes I love it... after its over
Love it! Always have done. I like the technical challenge of seeing how far I can get without dabbing or walking.
I am climbing on a hardtail so i enjoy it !
On long climbs I tend to break it down into manageable chunks mentally. Make it to that tree, get to the next bend, get past that gate etc

The whole ride is fun on an ebike. Up and down. Plus i get 3x more runs in. The analogue lot spend more time walking uphill than riding.

My typical ride style too

Get a hardtail, use clipless pedals and don’t be afraid of using gears.
So tru
Spend 50c for the bus, then do it again and again
Flat pedals always ftw. 💪
Great vlog guys as always, keep up the good work.Anna and Isaac thank you for the tips.
I actually like climbing, I like the challenge, plus I like seeing the benefits.
I like the challenge of a steep climb, but hate having to walk it. What helps me is to watch the HR to know when to back off or rest. I've also found that doing wheelies off of small obstacles can help with boredom on long fire road climbs. 😄

Greetings from Denmark thanks for mentioning Denmark ❤

i started on the road so i like climbs
Not had a chance to watch properly yet, but I'm confused by the section headings. Seems to be missing the two main ways to enjoy climbing, "Book an uplift" and "Buy an ebike"?
Some times it just more efficient to push up!! But mostly having a good running drive train helps
i love climbs!
Coming from the road, I love climbing. I don't like long descents on the MTB because there is very little pedaling. After more than a handful of minutes I'm missing the effort and just want to go back to pushing on the pedals.
I’m weird, I think about going out to climb, and I love it
I bought a Specialized Turno Levo 🤷🏻♂️. I’m all smiles now.

I find using an E-Bike makes the climbs more manageable and fun.😅
You mentioned Illinois! Funny. I like the climbs that are technical to keep my brain challenged.

@@radiocontrolled9181 3x7 is not suitable for woods, I couldn't change rear and front chainrings fast enough. For slow pace it is normal.

It’s a self-gratifying sort of reward that the newer generation couldn’t understand.
Hey, Illinois has plenty of hills to tire me out on every ride!
I like to count my pedal strokes, takes my mind off it
Wireless earphones and a long playlist, before you know it, you’re at the top!
There is no town named Suffolk in Illinois…
Just something to think about:

Ebike changes your outlook on climbing !
Take the plunge. You'll be sorry you didn't do it earlier. Plus, your CNS isn't trashed, and you'll pummel the downhill. It's amazing, and so fun
Any suggestions on e-mtb? I've been eyeing the Giant Trance x and Polygon Collosus.
@@rmoore4yris None at all, depends on how and where you ride, and your budget. Personally I've got a Mondraker Chaser R, does the job I need it for.
I did I bought an E bike😅 it’s a bigger smile than my naturally aspirated bike on climbs. 😮
Grab a carbon hard tail and watch everyone else struggle as you pass them 😉 pretty satisfying.
Any suggestions? 47 year old amateur enduro racer here. I’m about to give up enduro and switch to XC. No idea on what bike I should start out with and I am looking for suggestions. TIA 👍🏻
I love climbing on my mtb… why would i hate half of my favourite hobby?
Only one way to make climbing fun, someone does it for you.
I dont mind the climb, I love it but i am weird. I feel you have to love it in order to get better at it
This is what worked for me: Buying a specialized Epic.
Climbing is part of it, to get to the top of a hill to go downhill you have to pedal to the top 😅
lucky for me i live in a valley so i have a minimum of 3 miles of uphill as soon as i walk out the door lol

The only way to get better on hills, is to ride more hills!!
Put some afrobeat into the earbuds 😊
I'm lazy and hate big climbs... I make it more fun by using my ebike.
I usually tilt my head up and pretend like I'm cycling on a flat surface and it doesn't hurt anymore lol
Climbing hills earns downhill thrills.
Your next video should be £1000 mtb challenge
My ebike makes climbing fun.
Hey just a friendly reminder that climbing is already fun.........E-bike life
Spend a few weeks trying to climb on a high geared DH bike then go back to your pizza geared enduro. You'll never complain again.
i just like the pain
I just want to get faster at climbing.
get an eBike
I don't mind a good climb. Means there's a good descent. Also, it's nice to challenge myself
Easy. Smoke weed!
get an emtb. fixed it for you.
Questions to the E-Bike commenters:
How cool exactly do you feel posting the hundredst comment „Go buy an E-Bike“?
How I make climbing enjoyable is by using my e-bike 😁
Have meal breaks at the top.
Nah, the gondola is the chance to recover before the next adrenaline rush, energy sapping downhill run.
Buy an e-bike 😂
Climbing yeehaa woop bring on the elevation
I hate climbs, that's xhy i go the other way, down the hill
Tech climbs are fun, fire roads and normal roads are awful
Or just get an EMTB. 😄
Did over 1000m today. Rewarded with views, companions and descent I like it. Only annoyance were e-bikers passing by.
Buy an e-bike. Fun going up and down. What's there not to like?
I will never like or enjoy riding uphill. Even on a e-bike. The advantage the e-bike would have would be to get rid of that hateful climb quicker so I can enjoy the downhill.
How to enjoy climbing.....get an ebike 😉
How to enjoy climbing, like truly love it? Get an ebike. Frickin revelation
How to enjoy climbs; simple, avoid them.....
Buy an e-bike.
That's easy - get an ebike

Make climbing ‘fun’…?!! Yeah, sure…buy an EEEB…!!! 😂
