This is my favorite version of this song. He knows he belongs to this town, and loves it and hates it in exactly equal measures. Peggy's voice is so perfect.
Peggy Seeger is much more than Pete's half-sister. She's an amazing artist in her own right, and she was MacColl's partner, later wife, and collaborator from the 1950s till his death.

What a talent; I was reading about Kirsty, marking my calendar for October 10. Talk about a gifted father and daughter.
Love this performance! I used to regularly listen to Ewan and Peggy at the "Singers Club" in London in the 1970s. They were so good!

I only knew this song because of The Pogues, twenty years ago. Wow. Excellent post. Thank you for the education.
Bit of jazz when you least expect it.

Beautiful.
Have also heard Wild Geese do this song. Liked both them and Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger doing it.
Sensational
I’ve been trying to figure out how to play this on guitar, anybody have any leads on anything like tabs or what tuning he’s playing in?
Same, it's not at all what the Pogues and Dubliners and co. play. They simplified it hugely to four chords.
When did the Salford wind become the smokey wind?
When Salford complained
original version is much darker
Nineteen shillings and eleven pence! Not exactly cheap!

Anyone who knows who Ewan MacColl is knows he's Kirsty's old man! 😂
Amusant, tout le monde le sait.
