Funny thing. It was written in 1949 by an Englishman. About an English city called Salford. Written to 'fill in' two parts of a play. Released initially in 1952. So really has nothing to do with Irish history. But if it works for you then carry on. Enjoy

It's an absolute age since I last heard that song, so thanks Leila Jane for reviving it. Evokes the industrial landscape of my youth when the gasworks distilled coal into coal gas (mostly hydrogen and carbon monoxide). Beautifully sung Leila Jane!

The song is actually about Salford (greater Manchester), written by Ewan McCall, about his hometown.

I've heard this song a thousand times, and I've used it in lectures and seminars about Irish history and the NI conflict, but Leila Jane's version is really outstanding because her beautiful voice and its vibrato make it special! Thank you so much!
Why on earth would you do that? Dirty Ol Town was written by a Scotsman about Salford - a town in England. You might as well play your students Words by Boyzone! 😂

Exactly, Ewan MacColl wrote it and reĺeased it as a single in 1952, the gasworks croft has long gone and the location was not far from where the BBC studios now stand.

I saw Leila Jane perform this in Grafton St last Monday, fantastic and a huge crowd around her loving it.
One thing I love about it myself is she's based her vocal on the Luke Kelly version, not Shanes. The Pogues version is great but Luke's phrasing and little touches all the way through still make his the definitive vocal.
That vibrato is what got me! Amazing!
