I drive a 16 Mack pinnacle, my boss had me drive a 18 Mack anthem for a 1400 mile trip, I found it to be more comfortable, more leg room, I'm 6ft 1in, and more quiet.
I think Mack is stepping up its game and providing superior equipment.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: APUs are the saviors of the modern class 8 truck. DPF/DEF issues always arise from excessive idling and improper maintenance.
I was hooked on the Western Star 🌟 but this Mack is so drop dead GORGEOUS, I wish I could afford one.
In 1981 I went and looked at a Mack with my International COE as a trade. The fool of a salesman said "Get rid of that junk, come back and we'll talk." So I went up the street to the KW dealer and traded in my "junk" for a W900 and it did me well until I traded it in on a Mack. I finally did purchase a Mack in 1999. I did not have to deal with that fool because I learned he had been fired in late 1981. That was a good move on Mack's part. Kept the Mack until 2009 when I retired.
First learned to drive for CDL in Mack Vision, drove in same type of truck in most part with first company worked for hauling frozen and dry foods to markets, been a long time since I operated a Mack.
Incase anyone is wondering what the beeping is: its is the lane I indicater warning, driver is driving with one hand and not making steering imputs... it takes some mental training but usually figure it out after 24 hrs.. it brings us back to the basics... both hands on wheel driving as is required
If I had the Money, I`d be more then glad to run a Mack as a Class 8. It`s wonderful to see a new competitor for the OTR truck Market.

Class A not 8
As a retired Terminal Manager who was responsible for 56 drivers and had a major hand in spec'ing 27 tractors every five years, I can assure you that driver comfort is a huge part of the deal. With the driver shortage getting worse, (current drivers aging, and young people not as quick to want to hire-in to drive,) it is MUCH different than it was 30 or 40 years ago, where the only worry in a tractor was the pricing and longevity, no matter what kind of ride and comfort there was. 40 years ago, it was not uncommon to have an OTC tractor with rear suspensions very much like what was on that cement truck (Hendriksen "walking beam" suspension.)! Manual steering, no air ride seats or cabs, small "coffin box" sleepers, air-operated wipers, AM radios (maybe,) etc! The tractor you were riding in is as different from those older tractors as the pickup you're currently driving is different from a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge pickup from the '70's!
That's a difficult question to answer, based primarily on what part of the country one lives in, and what a hiring company is looking for. In some cases, there are trucking companies that offer training. There are also accredited schools that are licensed by individual states to teach (state or city colleges and technical schools.) There are also a number of quality driver learning centers. I would say that, in all these cases, one would want to make sure that there is plenty of training on FMCSA and CDL rules and requirements, as well as ample training behind the wheel. The terminal I managed was 100% Hazmat, hauling rather dangerous products, so we could not, unfortunately, take anyone with less than at least two years experience, and a whole lot of specific product training (about 8 weeks worth,) before they were fully hired!

I have well over 3 million miles + OTR In a Mack ... Other than a couple of flat tires I never had any problems ... Mack is a dependable no nonsense Truck ... I LOVE THEM ... 😍😍😍

Too bad that "it's still a Mack" is all Volvo in the real world. Freightliner (Daimler AG meaning Mercedes-Benz) is #1 by volume. Mercedes-Benz is no joke when it comes to fuel savings, which is very important in trucking.

He sounds like a salesman. Pre emmission trucks are far more reliable than these new ones. Too many electronics and sensors. But when they do work right. They are definitely sweet rides.
your absolute right! Im a diesel mechanic for a major trucking company. the cost of ownership of these rigs are massive. The after-treament systems are not that reliable and are very expensive to fix. example the main filter is the DPF. Cost of replacement depending on the manufacture $2100 to $3000. the temperature sensors for the DPF $330 X 2. and Nox sensors $450 to $600 Per sensor X2. and the the big one Detroit there exhaust filters are all one unit DPF and SCR if the SCR fails and they due. you cant replace just the SCR you have to buy he Whole assembly Cost??? $8000 Not including the DPF Filters, tack on another $2500.

Road Glide 5: your statement is true for trucks built 5 years ago. Trucks today only need basic servicing. I been driving a 2016 Volvo which has 211,000 miles in it ( only driver ) and the only breakdown was a wheel seal on rear axle... truck has 7,000 road hours
I started switching my fleet to the Mack Anthem starting in 2020. I have yet to have a single regret.
Some great information about a commercial rig. Super job by BTBRV.
You see some folks out on the road pulling the heavier RV's with trucks similar to this. That's got to be a blast up high can see everything and don't have to worry about stopping, once again keeping space in play, probably don't feel the rig back there. On to # 2

Better then the tired old Volvo I learned on. I used to drive a 26' box truck freightliner. The company I was contracted with was getting rid of their fleet and hiring contractors because they where spending so much money on emissions upkeep for their fleet of OTR trucks and box trucks.

I love my 379, but these new trucks coming out look really slick. New Volvos and frieghtliners are looking nice. I think all auto, motorcycle, and big truck manufacturers are starting to learn and make vehicles more for bigger people. Also adding little things like this truck's bigger switches and designing steering wheels better.

Great video. Hoping to see myself pass by since I was in driving around corpus that whole week. I was taking loads from san antonio tx to Portland. There a construction on the corner of 361 and 181/35. I drive a 1997 freightliner with a Detroit desiel 60 series with a striat 10 manual transmission hauling landscape material with a end dump. Recently ran into your videos and watch them on the daily. Thanks for the info and entertainment. But by the way hes not 100% right about the overhaul. My engine went 1300000 miles before overhual which I did last year. All I did was change all injectors because of low bars but not complete fail and the bearings at 800000 which your suppost to do and 600000 lol. And Oil change every 8000 along with fuel and oil filters. Other than that nothing big.
As a motor vehicle enthusiast I have no dealings with any work trucks really, I don't work in that field (may want to some day!) but I saw an ad for the VNL860 and that led me to this and a few more all new Semi's for 2017/2018.. This Mack truck is a clear cut next gen design. never seen anything like it on the road or the internet. my inner automotive enthusiast wants to know how fast an unladen mack anthem will go flat out top speed and how fast it hits 60 with the most powerful available engine lol

What a beautiful truck, Mack Trucks built America. Do you see where the needle is at 12 that’s how fast you operate that vehicle fully loaded. I’m still a fan of 55 Stay Alive. The faster you go the more money you spend on fuel.

Nowadays the gold dog means that but the original reason for the gold dog was when the R Model came out. They created the all glorious Maxidyne engine which they painted with a gold colored paint. So R Models with a Maxidyne engine and Maxitorque transmission gave it a gold dog regardless of rears. Volvo changed all that and ruined Mack in the 90s.

Very educational. My Uncle was an owner-OTR operator for years and he said all drivers hate "dead-heading", the old term, for two reasons. 1 You are losing money and 2. it's harder to stop. He said the tires won't grasp without weight.
Dead heading is having an empty trailer, bobtailing is having no trailer attached.
When you think about it big rigs are designed to handle and brake better with a load. That goes also for the suspension, a smoother ride.
I once had to bobtail 7 hrs. to pickup a trailer, never so happy to pull a trailer till that day. Air bags help pickups when they are empty, not class 8 trucks.
thats because you did not drive a modern truck. say a 6x2 tractor are very comfy driving even empty, still it got a light arse so need to be a bit careful.
Dead head isn't an old term, its always been used even too this day. Same thing with bobtailing......

Any DEF system problems reported? I ran a 2015 Pinnacle and had some significant issues.

In the 60’s Mac was good and it had is own engine, the v8 E9 was the best ever if you had it to 615 hp or Australia package
they did 6.5 mpg . After Volvo take in over it is just garbage nobody buys a Mac nobody. Horrible fuel mileage and garbage engine and transmission if you can get a manual any more. Mac doesn’t have the 16.1 liter Volvo anymore because that only comes on Volvo. Mac isn’t a American truck any longer I would never spend my money to get some Sweden as rich .
I drive OTR now as a company driver, would love to be o/o but so confused as to which rig to get into. I believe in brand new simply because of the cost I want the investment benefits, warranty, dealer support, technology is now advanced etc, but do you have and if nor could you put together pros and cons review of the big three?

Houston has way way more jobs. 62k new gained in 2017. San antonio has more style. Work weekly in both on new development. Live in HOU, spend weekends everywhere else with fam like corpus, poc, livingston, SA, austin etc... plenty of places

My first truck was a West Coast COE Mack. My second & third were COE Freightliners, w/queen sleepers; my fourth was a COE K-100 Aerodyne. The last three had the Cummins big cam 400, 411 rears, and 13 speeds. You notice I never bought another Mack.

FYI a NOX sensor is not a maintenance item...you replace them when they go bad, not by a mileage interval
Way too much beeping from the lane departure alert. Also, it's 2018. What happened to push button start? The truck did seem pretty sooth and quiet. And I really like that gold doggie.
The brass dog used to mean that the truck was pedigree, all Mack, Mack trans, Mack engine, Mack axles and suspension. Doubt that stands true today, on a side note I have a solid brass dog, and I'd never part with it.
It still means exactly the same thing today.

The 505 HP MP8 engine is the way to go. I used to drive a Mack Pinnacle with the 445 HP MP8 engine and I used to wish it had more power most of the time. It was a good engine, had great fuel economy but, sometimes I wish it had more power. I remember the company I used to work for had two other Mack Pinnacles with the 505 HP engines and the difference was significant. The 505 HP engine made everything pretty much effortless.
I would honestly go no lower than 485 HP on a class 8 truck. It's always better to have the power and not need it, than need the power and not have it.
I wish Mack would update the Pinnacle too. Make it more braulic looking like the Granite or the Titan.
This new Mack Anthem is pretty good looking though. I think the best looking truck on the road is that Western Star 5700 with second being the International Lonestar.
On a different note, I love diesel engines but, if all trucks would transition to hydrogen fuel cells then there would not be a need for the DEF garbage. Trucks could make it work because the Nikola truck could do like 1,200 miles to the tank(s) so, finding another fuel station within a 1,200 mile radius would be easier. This would then pave the way for hydrogen fuel to become the next big and best thing IF the elitists allow it.
I like the new Tesla electric truck but, (for me anyway) the new Nikola fuel cell truck would be much more practical in real world situations.
Great video, and you were spot on with the biggest issue fleets are having is that damn DEF setup. In the Macks it would warn you that the engine would be derated (basically limp mode) in a certain amount of time. Yeah, it makes diesels cleaner but turns then into more pieces of s**t too. The Mack I drove would have that issue almost every 6 months and I took super care of that truck since it was brand new when it was assigned to me.
If you really want a treat try driving a cab forward like the Pierce at the hurricane expo. You have to completely relearn driving unless you want to constantly curb tires.

Learned to drive and pump in a Mack cf600 5 speed on the hills of western PA. My instructor said, “if you can master this you can drive anything.”
I work at the powertrain factory that build the engines, transmissions, and differentials for these.

I drove a mack rd800 off road road for 9 years. Mack will and does outlast kw and international

We've gotten KWs, Macs, Internationals and Freightliners. Prefer the ride of the Macs. The newer KWs we just got you can feel all the rough parts on the road, as if no shocks or air bags on suspension.
Been riding in a mack gor 8 months now, and love it smooth and quite. No other truck like it.
Crazy, I know the old ones are horrible.

My dad had a old Mack back in the day, he also had a rig that I’ve never seen other then his it was a Autocar. I remember him always bragging how much of a badass the Autocar was.

I'd go with a 2006-2007 classic Silverado 3500HD LBZ Duramax backed with the Allison transmission, very reliable and solid combination.

How come you didn't show us what the sleeper look like? Did it have a gridge? Storage compartment, bed, did it have a bunk? All the other goodies.
Almost got a full year of OTR experience as a Company Driver for a carrier and I’m really interested in buying my own semi next year or the year after.
My three choices from best to last:
1: Mack Anthem
2: Volvo VNL 760, 780, or an 860
3: Freightliner Coronado

Thats actually a pretty nice looking truck the problem with macks is they make the windows too small like a H2 hummer. And you would think a semi truck would have a ton of room in the cab but Macks just don't. Not like a Volvo or even a Freightliner.

Yep, I’ve had two of them at 525 hp. Both with big 15L Cat motors. They were both as rv vehicles. They were very very fun to drive.
