"most people are too boring" ok tea wow go off sam
Jessica Bentley what does that mean?
Melanie Võ what exactly has you confused by this.....?
Its true
@@MiuXiu Everything. Is it even in English? I genuinely don't understand what she just said.
The Pen it’s twitter speak that was stolen from drag queens that was stolen from black women. I’ll translate if you really are confused and not trolling:
“Wow Sam! When you said “Most people are too boring,” that was the truth. You tell them dude!”
Tea comes from T, which is slang for truth. Used in “spill the tea,” like “tell the truth” ... sometimes used for “shade” which is saying something shady, aka critical but true comments. “Go off sis” is just kind of hyping someone up, similar to saying “keep doing your thing,” used sarcastically a lot as well.. like in an argument if someone has a disagreement, they can say “ok sure but go off.” “Sis” is just short for sister, used in place of “friend” kind of, used toward both sexes.
Edit: fixed some typos cause I was typing outside and it was dang cold out so my fingers were failing me
One of them got kicked in the face by another member during the dance, and barely flinched and kept going.
OrsoBaLorso Hobi said he actually almost passed out 🥺
@@jonidh1064 omg when did that happen? ;;
That's V accidentally kicked Jhope face
@@aidacelicaguilar7927 you have to look carefully at when they got up after "sitting" down and moved back and fourth.. look closely at 09.33-09.34
@@aidacelicaguilar7927 around 9:32 they do a kick from sitting down to go back up and if you look at the left part of the screen, jhope held his head for a sec because v accidentally kicked him lol. He said in the livestream that it hurt so bad but he lost focus for a moment but had to continue nonetheless 😅
"You can feel things without understanding it" so true.
Sam not knowing a thing about the significance of this and the last CD's, but still talking about how they develop different "personas" and "stage persona"
I was abt to say that u take my time to shine 😂😂😂
@@salmaelhaj3788 sorry... It's just that I was soooo excited because the guys message got transmitted to people who don't know about they history or universe 😭😭. I just had to tell it!
That's pretty basic vocal group stuff. They do pull it off well though :)

@@salmaelhaj3788 mine too! But the fact that he noticed deserved a comment 😊
15:00 in Korea, on music shows, they are told to hold for seven seconds (for editing purposes). Korean tv films music performances very differently in a lot of ways, and this is one of the things that really stands out when it's carried over onto American tv.
That's just good performing in general. Don't break character.
isn't it 10 seconds for the ending fairy? they even put a timer on the screen haahhaha
omg that’s so cool i never knew that
Any BTS member: *sings a note for half a second*
Sam: *Okay, let me give you a 5-minute extensive description, from where his tongue was placed to how he came out of his mother's womb* 😂
I LOVE HIM💜
That's what these videos are all about anyway so I don't get the joke I guess??
@@berfin5865 It wasn't meant to take a shot at Sam... I just found it impressive how in-depth he goes and expressed it like that! But I guess some people just want to nitpick😌 Anyhow, have a lovely night😊
@@underratedjinius6667 sorry if I offended you. I didn't want to come out aggressive. It's just I didn't understand why it was funny. Have a good one yourself though 😊
This channel does not have a single fight in the comments, incredible
😂😂😂
The whole idea of having a stage persona vs your actual personality is the big theme of their last few albums, good job pointing that out just by their voices!
The way you imitated J-hope's part (the rapper who started the second verse) was really spot on in terms of style … like yeah, it really helps to understand what you're talking about when you're doing what he's doing and it's working
An important thing to note about this performance:
That dance is more gruelling than it looks. Pretty much all of the movements are in the boys' shoulders and chest, which will make singing really difficult as there's less air control. For them to be able to do these kinds of movements and still have their voices be so controlled is amazing and shows just how much skill they have and how much training they have done.
Thank you for reviewing this performance, Sam. Your respect is so clear and really touching to all the fans of BTS. We appreciate you not being another person wanting to use BTS's name for clout and instead being insightful and just acting as you would usually, even if you didn't know what they were saying.
“all of this happens because of their personas” we have entered the twilight zone......
Love your content. Just wanted to mention that Korean is alphabet based (there are vowels and consonants) and not character based. I’m not a singer but your analysis is always so interesting and educational.
Vickie Yom i was thinking the same....thought i remember learning that korean writing system was “designed” around the korean language as opposed to how other writing systems develop historically around their respective languages.
@@laurenazalea yes, sejong created the alphabet. Before that I think Chinese characters were used to write
There are vovel characters, but I think Hangul is indeed character-based and syllabicated
@@sassyest8292 Syllabicated? Yes. Character-base? Not really.
Edit: Well, I just got this from another comment, and I thought it would be a better way to explain it to you(I edited some things, though).
"Korean isn't character-based like Chinese; they moved away from that system awhile ago. Instead, though, they stuff each syllable into individual blocks. The resulting emphasis on each syllable within a word sounds like what you were describing.
For any who are curious:
Korean uses letters, just like English. ㄱ = g, ㅏ = a, ㅅ = s, ㅜ = u, and so on. You don't write them out the same way you do in English, however.
For example, "singer" in Korean is "gasu," and these are the letters separated: ㄱ ㅏ ㅅ ㅜ. Once when you write that down, it looks like this: 가수 - 'Ga' in one block, 'su' in another.
"Happiness" in Korean is "haengbok," which is weird and long in English.
In Korean letters: ㅎ ㅐ ㅇ ㅂ ㅗ ㄱ, less extended but still weird. Now, put it together, and you'll get haengbok: 행복. Neat and short.
When speaking, Koreans tend to put many emphases and thought into each syllable. Not as much as with Chinese and other character-based languages, and sometimes those syllables end up slurred together. Still, enough to have the effect that you heard!"

@@sassyest8292There are consonants too
YES YES YES to your talk about languages. i'm a languages student and im only studying english and french, but when i listen to my friends speaking the languages they're studying (and that i dont understand) im just amazed and fascinated by the sounds, i don't even need to know what they're saying to appreciate them. and music just adds another level to that amazement. i love listening to SoHyang singing the Moana songs and i DEFINITELY do not know what she's saying, but her expressiveness and emotion come through and that's literally all i need. that's such a beautiful and important part in music, imo 👌
With what you mentioned with the moana song I would like to hear your opinion about the Danish singer in the role of Elsa in frozen's into the unknown because I feel like her voice and powerfulness fits Elsa better than the original (only if you feel like doing it and have the time :)) where as for Moana I LOVE the french voices in the songs
@@Shigune05 i love the Moana songs in French too! that and Korean are my favourites 👌 and the Danish singer is UNBELIEVABLE, i love her interpretation and how powerful her singing is! 😭
out of topic but try to listen to the brazilian version of Moana’s song! it’s absolutely my favorite
Martina Boccaleoni me too. I’m learning French too (English speaker) but I love listening to other languages and how people pronounce words and how their accents really plays on my ear and trying to see if I can make out words (if I’m hearing correctly) I love listening to Stromae sing Quand C’est to catch the words I know and make out more words. When I listen to BTS I’m definitely learning the Korean words because I love it and want to fully sing/rap along.
@@Egypt22 YEEES same! im such a fan of mostly Scandinavian / Northern languages because i have so much fun looking for similarities among them 😍 and Korean is easily one of my favourite languages in the entire world!!
Your opinion about their personas is super on point, they have indeed a public persona and an inner one. They kinda talk about it in the song "Shadow" from this album, if you are curious check the lyrics! They are really insightful
He must be the only one that explains so much i love himmm
Interesting point on the language! Korean actually isn't character based like Chinese; they moved away from that system awhile ago. Instead though, they stuff each syllable into individual blocks. The resulting emphasis on each syllable within a word sounds like what you were describing ^^
For any who are curious:
Korean uses letters, just like English. ㄱ=g, ㅏ=a, ㅅ=s, ㅜ=u, etc. You don't write them out the same way you do in English though.
For example, "singer" in Korean is "gasu". These are the letters ㄱ ㅏ ㅅ ㅗ. But when you write that down, it looks like this: 가수. 'Ga' in one block, 'su' in another.
"Happiness" in Korean is "haengbok". Ugly and long in English, with the Korean letters ㅎ ㅐ ㅇ ㅂ ㅗ ㄱ. Less long, still ugly. But put together you get haeng-bok: 행복. Pretty and short.
When speaking then, Koreans tend to put a lot of emphasis and thought into each syllable. Not as much as with Chinese and other character based languages, and sometimes those syllables are slurred together. But evidently still enough to have that effect you heard!
oh! Are you Korean by any chance?
Wow this is so cool thank you for sharing this
Perfectly put!

Thank you for teaching us, this was so interesting!
This was an alright explanation, you have a few mistakes but not too big to take away from what you mean. 감사합니다 ㅎㅎ
You are talking about their Persona while their new album series are called Persona and they talk about that! Nailed it! lmao
@@404gram The new serie is still connected to it actually, Persona is connected to Shadow and Ego

14:37 "anD THEY'RE STILL IN THEIR CHARACTER." You sounded so much like my director berating my fellow cast to stay in character till after the beat ends hahaha
That was a phenomenal review. My 11-year-old daughter is a huge BTS fan and in choir and band, so I am really looking forward to watching this with her and tying together my "thing" (watching Sam Johnson videos) and her "thing" (watching BTS videos).
Man, THANK YOU for putting all this material out there. If I am ever in a position to need to perform (hey, it happens), or even just to get some lessons to make my shower singing more connected.. I am definitely getting Sam Johnson lessons. :D
Do your thing.. do your thing... with her now...
This is absolutely wholesome
Thank you so much for supporting her. I've been a fan of BTS since I was 13 (7 years ago) and my parents never showed any interest in it (they were abusive, granted) and I cannot tell you just how much validating your kid's interest will help her in the long run. You're doing amazing, keep it up 💜
deadsoon thank you. I was not a fan at first... I keep explaining to her it’s not the music or the performance I dislike, it’s the insane rabid obsessive fan base. But we listen to them together sometimes... she still seems to try to prove to me that they’re good musicians, but I just keep telling her - they’re super talented! I enjoy them!
So it’s been kind of a work in progress. And your comment was super appropriate and appreciated. It’s really good to know that something I did or said resonated with someone else.
I wish UA-cam let you friend people, I’d friend you. Comments are great but they don’t work well for getting to know people. 😔
@@ArmchairDeity I feel the same way! There should totally be a UA-cam Social Media site, though at the same time I can see that getting out of hand...
The breathy-to-clean sound was Jin, he does that a lot. He adds a lot of breathiness in his voice on purpose, and even like sighs (?) into the mic. There's one video where you see him recording Tonight and he sings the same bit in falsetto and then in head voice, you can really see the difference in texture. I'd love to see a reaction to that and Jungkook's Euphoria rerecording, since that's just them at the mic, and chatting things with the PD.
I loved that you mentioned the audience because Ariana Grande watched them rehearse this and she flipped her shit.
This is the one: ua-cam.com/video/5QO3MsWaHE4/v-deo.html
she actually saw on, that was the song that made her freak out
I'm Korean and not good at English, so I couldn't understand everything you said, but I found out through the comments that you mentioned our Korean language. We continue to learn Korean language from elementary school to high school and read literature. In fact, even Koreans don't know Korean language in detail. Because it's too difficult and complicated. But it's a very attractive language! I saw someone briefly explaining the principles of Korean language in the comments.
One of the reasons why Korean is difficult to translate into English is because of its unique feeling. We can't translate a word correctly. For example, in Korean, there is a word "시원하다"(si won ha da) which is used in a very different sense depending on the situation. The most basic meaning is that 'the ice cream is ', and when something difficult is done well, it is said to be "spit it out"(According to the translation results, it means "please tell me how you feel!" It certainly couldn't translate the feeling of the Korean language.)
Or when you go into a bath full of hot water, maybe you say 'I feel good.' It is said '시원하다'(like cool) in korean. You will think about why do they say it's cool when they're in hot water? That's a reasonable idea. I don't even know why. I just use it like a habit!
In the same way, we can say '아름답다'(a rum dab da)(beautiful) in about 250 words.
My hobby is writing novels. Whenever I write, I am amazed at the greatness of Korean language.
영어 못하신다면서 소설을 쓰셨넼ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
I love this. I've never seen a reaction that goes into their different voices so thoroughly. Your channel and this video are both so great
Now, before someone starts saying that he's too picky or that he is criticizing the guys, he is NOT. He's a vocal teacher, and his job is to think of ways in which the song could had sound better, that's all. Also, he's kind of a perfeccionist, but aren't all with our own works? I'm a lawyer, and I always thinking and rethinking how my arguments can be better... So yeah. Not being picky, just making his work. We love you Sam! Thanks for the video, it was perfect 😍
@o0Melyanna0o I hope so! But there's always someone out there who don't hear the complete video and would start calling out him for "criticizing" bts... I've seen it so many times before, with other videos... But Sam just deserves love from the Fandom!
@o0Melyanna0o To me too! I've discovered so many artist through this channel, that aren't my regular cup of tea, but towards which I'm a fan now!
bro... the fact that you aren’t an ARMY but still immediately connected their stage presence to their PERSONA.. i’m shook
Broooo i think this is the 1st a vocal teacher/coach that analyzed Jungkook's ability as a vocalist full detail on 1st listen.
Im shooked.
He is severely under rated as a really talented vocalist imo. Since he's good in alot of aspects, his ability as a vocalist often get overlook.
I have seen many reactions to BTS. And he's always focused on Jimin's abilities, but Jungkook is highly praised. Those who are underestimated as vocalists are Tae and Jin. And they are very good.
@@kirikou. but JK is also ignored for his techniques. Lack of critical assessment on Tae and Jin's techniques doesnt validate the lack of assessment JK experiencing too.
In this instances i really appreacite this vocal teacher effort. He assessed everyone.
I totally agree ✊
Sam, Korean is actually a very fluid language, it's actually hilarious how long winded Korean sentences are. Especially when an ajumma is getting onto or bragging about a younger person, or their husband, they literally will go off for a solid 3 minutes without taking a break for a breath😂. In this song they are intentionally using staccato in this song. But you're right about Chinese, especially mandarin it's a VERY staccato language. Japanese is like a blend of Korean and mandarin, so it's half and half depending on the context of what's being said.
Sorry to write a novel lol, but I do enjoy your reaction videos and your musical/vocal knowledge!😄
The sound effects tho... I can't 😂😂😂😂
*THAT'S SAD* It cracks me up, gosh!
The second rapper, RM, very much has the style with his voice of "beating up" the beat (I love his raspy/gravelly voice), rather than a clear or swaggy rap. J-Hope, the breathy then harder rapper, is my favorite. There's nothing of vocal value in that second sentence, just wanted to share that he's my bias, lol.
Hobi is my Bias wrecker on many occasions because of his melodic rap flow
I think that's what I like about the rap line. They have distinct rap styles that show their 'identity' as rappers but at the same time, can be adjusted to their songs, which is difficult since they tackle A LOT of genres.
Yeah Hobi biased 🙋
I’ve never even watched/heard BTS perform and I really enjoyed this. The amount of structured detail you provide is always the best on UA-cam.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sam is a great vocal coach, he knows a lot, is very unbiased and honest. He's not afraid to say when he's not completely sure or doesn't know.
If you want you can check out some more of Bts, they're incredible. They write and produce their own music, their lyrics hold beautiful meanings. They've done so many different genres aswell. True artists. They've been a group for 7 years now so they have a big discography
I love that they hold their personas after the song ends. That’s something dancers do really well is holding their pose until there is a natural break in connection with the audience. I feel like a lot of singers come out too quickly and not letting the audience contemplate the emotion the song invoked for a few more seconds
Thank you for explaining stuff in a way that is easy but insightful without making me feel dumb. I'm not a singer but I love music and I want to understand what makes my favorite artists special. I loved your Luis Miguel video. I wish you could listen to his voice at 49, it's amazing, mature but powerful.
lol, it went from 21 views to over 1600 when I refreshed the page - we're really out here living for this comeback, huh?
Thanks for another great video, Sam! I really enjoy you content!
sam: “all of these things happen because of their P E R S O N A S”

I honestly didn't want this video to end. I love your videos and I love bts and I would love it if you did more videos on them. I always go back to that one video you did on bts from time to time and I got so happy when I got the notification to this. Please don't make me wait too long for another bts video!
I loved how you talked about the entire performance and not just vocals, and how the vocals relate to the tone of the performance and their movements!! Really good analysis overall. Thanks for making this video and giving BTS the credit they deserve, because as you said they really are amazing performers! 💜
I learn so much from your videos and I’m so grateful for it
I have panicked when I saw this notification

I haven't clicked on anything this fast in a while (apart from their content). LOVE FROM POLAND
Saaaame
It'd be interesting to see you react to more BTS since you said you liked them. I noticed you haven't reacted to a whole bunch of BTS and it'd be cool to hear what they're doing and why they're doing it and what's good rather than just 'yeah sounds good'
:D
I'm so glad to listen to your breakdown of some of BTS's more recent work! I was always hoping you would, but didn't want to ask because I figured you're already drowning in everybody and their grandma begging you to review their favourite artist. Anyway, great analysis as usual! I swear I feel like I become a better singer just listening to you.
I really appreciate that you understand you don’t need to know Korean to appreciate the music and the emotion and message of their songs!!! Thank you for reacting to BTS❤️
Funny that you mention the different voices about Namjoon (the second rapper). Recently he said he uses different voices for speechs in Korean and regular talking. And a relaxed voice when he speaks English
Thank you very much for the detailed analysis! It is always interesting to listen to you and get know more and more about anatomy and physiology of singing.
Little point about language: Korean is not like Chinese, it is syllable language, just letters look like signs, those staccato moments here are just the certain composition' lyrics specificity, the song was created that way. For legato in Korean I recommend you to listen to Lee Sun Hee's "Destiny".
Thank you very much for your videos!
I've never clicked on something so fast! Thank you for doing this analysis! ^^ Your videos are always entertaining and informative!
They teach in idol school to hold the pose longer than when the music ends. It looks better on camera to hold the pose than to stop right when the song ends.
Oh, Sam. I'm so glad you reacted to this. We can see that you're actually getting in depth with the song and your explanations. Most of the time, even voice coaches, react to their songs to just, you know, get some clicks and money off of them, but I've been following you for quite some time now and - keep it up. You're doing such an amazing job with your channel. Thank you.
I'm honestly so happy you reacted to bts again
i am so glad you reacted to this bc you’re the only vocal coach on youtube that i fully trust and i thought it was a beautiful performance so i really wanted you to react to it! thank you so much!
hey I did not expect this 😳 thank you Sam! i feel like I've learned so much from you.
Dude, thank you so much. I have never seen this indepth of an analysis of the sounds a voice produces, and I never really thought about the idea that the way they use their voices being a reflection of their personas. Knowing them - yeah it kind of does reflect who they are. I would absolutely love to see you react to more of them. I think maybe a good one would be this: ua-cam.com/video/BFqF-3qTzRg/v-deo.html There are 3 songs, it is live in a small studio - no audience, and they aren't dancing. They really do all have very different vocal colors. Thank you again, this was very educational, and I really enjoyed it!
For someone who used to be a pianist, I find comfort in Sam talking about all these things. I always learn lotsa things from him.
I'm just so obsessed with this performance ,everytimes it gets better lol they just have a great balance between rap-line and vocal-line .... it fits perfectly, like it means to be that way

It's amazing how you talk about the stage personas because it's actually something they address in their albums and they've mentioned struggling with their identity a few times too
your analysis is always so interesting and eyeopening thanks for your hard work sam!!
This is my favorite bts reaction u have done. Cuz u reacted to their dancing, noticed their personas and STILL evaluated their vocals. I love this youtube channel so much because Mr. Sam is really honest and open-minded and I love that a lot about him. he is also really funny.

my fav youtuber reacting to my fav group💓💓
edit: i love your impersonation of RM (the second rapper) hahahahaha
I like and agree with how you mentioned they stay very professional and in-character the whole performance! Many times, they've had problems or mini accidents during their performances--even in this one, one of the members accidentally kicked another one in the head while they were dancing--but they try their best to resolve these things without anyone noticing. I think that's a major thing that I appreciate about them, especially after seeing a lot of western artists or other foreign artists who don't hold to their performances. Despite what their intent may be, it just feels really unprofessional, especially when they just stop singing or stop the song and talk about something. I've seen multiple artists do this, and I think some people don't mind but personally I'm not a huge fan of that behavior. I'm not sure how much of BTS you've seen in your free time, but sticking to a performance is something they're known to be good at and I'm glad you were able to pick that out!
Just as a random related-unrelated side thing, I think one of the most memorable and humbling performances was when they were at a concert in Chile. The youngest member, Jungkook, was having issues with breathing and getting enough oxygen since the altitude was so high and they were dancing and singing so much (which was especially bad for him at the time, because his vocal technique used a lot of air/it was extremely breathy). He was feeling sick and light-headed and kept almost passing out and had to be given oxygen a few times until he eventually collapsed backstage. But each time he would come out after and perform and give it his all because he didn't want to disappoint all of the ARMY that came to see them. Overall, he did so well that no one really noticed he was exhausted. That was just an issue that mostly dealt with Jungkook but they've all had their fair share of mishaps and problems throughout the years, and I think that just shows how dedicated they are to their art and their fans. I think it's really admirable and a even a bit humbling that these boys who are so extremely talented and influential would do so much just to put on performances for us, even if they're sick or in pain.
thank you for your work! very interesting!
I appreciate how you comment on the connection between the vocal performance and the dance and their personas
