Ive got friends in all 50 states and for property taxes, income taxs retirement benefits I would say are the best in the western states. You have chances to get bigger plots of land and less building codes compared to the east and western cost. Most of the western states are more conservative which means they more or less stay out of your business. The biggest problem is making sure when you buy is make sure you have water rights.
I moved from Connecticut to Massachusetts. I found inexpensive land in the Hilltown area of western Massachusetts in 1997 or 98. The western side is so much better than the central and eastern part of that state - people are independent-minded and I had a lot of friends already living along the Connecticut River valley, especially up north. I recently retired, and moved to a home I built here in MA. I got a great deal back then on a geographically-perfect place to live the homesteading life No children, and actually taxes are better here (not by a lot) than CT, but the cost of living is definitely better here, especially in this region of the state. (Cheaper gas, vet bills, car bills...) Ideally, I'd consider VT or VA or NC or perhaps Maine - but not until now did I know enough folk in VT to make that plunge. My brother's family is moving to Florida - between the price of land for farming, and a full seven months of heat and humidity, I said NO. My parents are deceased so their location is not a concern. Having a farm business here is possible. I understand more paperwork in VT, so this is better here. I can sell my eggs just by hanging out the figurative shingle. Moving was a bit hard but not so bad. I drove everything up to my MA home myself - well, I couldn't do it all at once as the house was being built, and sorting before I left was good. A lot of stuff came up in multiple trips in my car (4 hours round trip), some before I retired. I rented a Budget van for one go, and two separate U-Haul trucks for the last. Staying and farming at my old home was not an option. No space, and although I'd be allowed chickens there, this would have meant I'd have no other land use space left. Besides, roosters were not permitted. I'm loving every moment of my homestead life here, and am going to be expanding what I do here. Yes, when I get sheep and goats, I will need to get a gun, but it is indeed possible in this state. (If for nothing else, if an animal is severely injured from a predator or some other misfortune, one needs to be able to dispatch quickly and efficiently) Right now it is just chickens, with quail in my future this year. Oh. I'm going to maple syrup this lot very soon!
I've lived in PA all my life. Homeschooling here is very restrictive. If you're used to no laws or some, you will not like homeschooling in PA. It's not impossible but the redundant paperwork is ridiculous especially if you have more than one child. Evaluations, portfolios , testing in grades 3,5 and 8. I would say it's okay for homesteading, BUT property taxes are getting high, gas is getting expensive, we have the highest tax in the nation on gas. Land is just getting expensive here. You can buy raw milk in PA. You can't sell eggs (though you can get away with it by saying to the person you'll accept payment for feed, but you can't sell them at a farmer's market. ) The permits to do it is outrageously expensive that no homestead could afford to sell eggs at a farmer's market. In all it's really beginning to be more like the New England states. We do have decent gun laws here as many do hunt but we have forces that want to ban guns so... Also if you're looking to live in a conservative state , though there are many here in PA, it's just not enough to keep it a conservative state. I'm sure I'm missing some other stuff, but if you want to know , PA's climate is cold. We maybe have 3-4 months out of the year where it's warm enough to garden. The rest of the time it's winter. So if lack of sun gets you depressed. Don't move here. We have about 8=9 months of winter. We do have a little bit of spring in between and that's March - May. Winters can be brutally cold especially if you live near Lake Erie. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask in a reply. Work opportunities_ not the place to come to, unless you live around the Harrisburg/Philly area. Everything else is becoming destitute. It's not called the Rust Belt for no reason. These are the things I can think of off the top of my head. As for me, I dream of the day I can move south somewhere.
I live in PA 1 hour south west of Philly. We are moving in a couple years and looking for where to go. I didn't know that about selling eggs. I buy from farmers all the time

So I live in the coastal North Carolina area. Specifically around the Wilmington area. I would love to hear your opinion how to homestead in areas with hot humid summers , and what kind of livestock does best . From what I can tell for example: sheep would be terrible due to the climate not being dry enough due to them being susceptible to disease . How do you deal with insects destroying your crops which I have found when trying my garden.
primitive bowyer Id say Texas is getting more and more liberal. They have 5 major liberals cities that influence the politics. Oklahoma is still very free.
I personally would love to start homesteading. I currently live in Indiana. But, I would like to rather be in either Texas or Colorado. But, I don’t know which one is better?
Great information! What resources did you use to find out about rules and regulations? Currently reside in central GA, and was looking for land to start our homestead, but have come to find that not only is land expensive, but different counties have different regulations. Ex: My current county requires that you cannot have any livestock, even birds like chicken or quail, unless you own at least 5 acres of land.
I know this is an old video, but how are you handling homeschooling with PA? I know it's extremely hard there. We debated on a move there for a job but the homeschool part worried me.
My family and I are in the researching phase of homesteading… We would prefer a mild climate for a decent growing season, somewhere w minimal natural disasters, good land that’s suited for all our needs (water, not too far from basic needs a country store and a hospital), we want a state that allows for rainwater catchment systems and have a good water source, (like a natural spring).. So far we’ve been looking in the north west part of NC, KY, AR, and TN… do y’all have any suggestions for me, or advice you’d like to share 🥺🥰… I will be grateful for it all!
Great video recently subscribed! Could you discuss the process in which you determined what county you wanted to live in and make the decision based on economy and schooling for that particular area
Love winter, and hunting my kids are adults. I don't have a gun, but I want to own a gun I'm still working as transport officer. And the cost of living is high in fort worth TX.
I’ve been thinking about moving to West Virginia. 🤨I’m so sick of Massachusetts. Between the politics, and the taxes, I’d rather live in a cow manure hut in the middle of the woods. 😂
Love all your videos. Im looking to start a homestead that supplies our living. Not to generate income. Somewhere in the blue ridge area. Looking at abandoned farms.
Do you possibly have a website you can share for looking into abandoned farms/property? We are currently in the planning stages of homesteading and would love resources on where to look for that
@@dallashotchkiss3573 go to the tax office in the area you want to live and inquire about farms or land that is behind in taxes. Or drive around looking for farm areas looking for land that has been neglected.
Good topic. I don't need to worry about family as mine spread out across the country to begin with, but I do need to be concerned about Social Security Disability and Medicare and if the state has programs to help supplement the $144.60 taken out of the tiny checks each month. I can't deal with all the cold and gloom of WA state anymore and when the back $ comes in need a place with some land to homestead some just to make ends meet! I've been leaning towards Missouri or Oklahoma. I was thinking AR, but found the taxes and restrictions too much. What do you think?
I found this video very interesting. This past summer my family moved from NH to CT. Major reason we chose CT was it was closer to family in NY. We didn't want to live in NY because the taxes were so high. I was suprised to find out the property taxes were cheaper in CT and the public school systems were rated an A in the country according to Niche. The price of food and other consumables are quite expensive in CT. However we are hoping to offset that cost with making our own food as much as possible. We weren't able to get a huge amount of property but are looking into leasing land and using it to pasture some of our animals. I was suprised you gave NH such a low score in hunting. It is a very conservative state when it comes to hunting and gun laws or so I thought. It was cool seeing the reasons why you left CT and comparing them to our reasons for wanting to move there. Thanks for the info.
#askhomesteady Aust, this is bob from heritage craft butchers. Jared is one of my partners. I’ve been holding spots for you for this Saturday’s butchery clinic and I want to confirm if you’ll be there.
As someone from NJ, the second worse state in the country, I advise almost anywhere other than NJ. NJ has way too high taxes for crummy old homes and too many regulations. Raw milk is illegal, but they are trying to legalize marijuana soon. The government is constantly in your business. Gun laws are ridiculous, everything is expensive. It is way overpopulated. I am looking to get out of this state ASAP. But of course NJ has an exit tax. Looking for places in PA, hoping to move when I finish college in the next year or 2.
Exit tax is the craziest thing I've ever heard of! I guess it's because they know it's a crummy place to live and needed to find a way to make it harder to leave (?)
I want to be confident and say California...and as far as climate goes and resources I am pretty confident...but the politics are horrible...we are hanging on in a few ways by homeschooling and so on.

I’d really like to find a state I can homestead, have raw milk, smoke marijuana, and own my guns. Is being free so much to ask for? Great info and great video but the fact that this video has to exist is sad.
Cute. But this is sooooo Connecticut. I have a friend from there. This is about the least spiritual way to choose your home... a spreadsheet. I hope real homesteaders are listening to the call of God and not just your logical wants... otherwise, not a soul would live in this area. Well, maybe a few, but not a lot.
You think wrong I’m afraid. I went to USC in Cali and some of the smartest kids in my classes were home schooled. Besides do you really want your kids being taught that their white skin makes them evil? Put them in sports, that’s enough for them to socialize.
Homeschooling is more beneficial for children than public schools. Homeschooled kids are more intelligent, learn REAL life skills that you wouldn't get from public schools, they aren't corrupted by the agendas, indoctrination, and bad influences, no bullies, you can Homeschool as little or as much as one wants to fit the families schedule....I can go on and on. I've been through the public school system and hated it. We had neighbors who were homeschooled growing up and they were the kindest and some of the most social people we've known. Homeschool doesn't mean less diversity or more restrictions, in fact it ensures more freedom that the kids in public schools will never get.

I buy from farmers all the time
Kentucky or Tennessee hands down
I need find a good place nice people in let peace and quiet
Texas has no state income tax
Question, curious about your thoughts about New Hampshire for homesteading. Thanks
What taxes did you factor into the tax portion of the point system
This is exactly the video I was looking for
I love that Homesteady jacket/hoodie!
You forgot WV on your spreadsheet…😢
My missus and i have 3 states on our mind to start our homestead one day. Wisconsin, north carolina or west virginia.
Wondering why you picked WI?
@@amandachen3973 we have family right over the border in wisconsin. Plus we are used to the climate and terrain. And my wife loves the beauty of the state.
@@amandachen3973 I'd say because it is a beautiful state, and because if you get out of the metropolitan areas, land is often affordable, and the mindsets there are compatible.
WV is a bit like a different country, in a time warp. We were considering it, then spent 3 months there.
@Based Ohio We were in Tug valley area, very depressed area economically, lots of meth, lots of litter beside the roads, no cell coverage. I'm sure there are nicer areas. To us it felt claustrophobic.
I'm in VA and I love it. There are hills for aqueducts and beauty. I love the Harrisonburg area. I am hoping to farm there at some point!
As we plan for trying everything we can do to get to our land to where we could build our own HOMESTEAD, We wanted to ask you two "Where do you think is the best place in Pennsylvania to HOMESTEAD?" We currently live in Schuylkill County here within Pennsylvania. We are looking to do everything we could do to GET our family of 13 Homesteading and Building the amazing FUTURE we know we can have as soon as possible. ANY advice you all could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much...
How do you deal with insects destroying your crops which I have found when trying my garden.
well, this is for you and everybody that will read this reply
Texas or Oklahoma
what do you think
primitive bowyer Id say Texas is getting more and more liberal. They have 5 major liberals cities that influence the politics. Oklahoma is still very free.
Too hot. I like four seasons. Oklahoma, too dry. And the landscape is... well... not interesting (to me).
@@tanikokishimoto1604
fair enough but if we are looking to a state that has 4 seasons then we are left with Tennessee or Kentucky
Of those two I say OK hands down. Personally I am looking at TN and MS.
A lot of people talk about winter and cold but never mention areas of heat and humidity.
Our move to Alaska to homestead is underway!
you didnt put the link for the radius website!
Thank you!!
Mississippi trust me, especially in the Delta. Cheap cheap cheap.
Excellent information.
GA
where is the spread sheet used to narrow States? Love this post
Wyoming for life!!
Great video recently subscribed! Could you discuss the process in which you determined what county you wanted to live in and make the decision based on economy and schooling for that particular area
Your name is Aust? O.o
Read the "Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness."
Love winter, and hunting my kids are adults. I don't have a gun, but I want to own a gun
I'm still working as transport officer. And the cost of living is high in fort worth TX.
Do you have any companies for raw milk in Ohio, thanks?
I’ve been thinking about moving to West Virginia. 🤨I’m so sick of Massachusetts. Between the politics, and the taxes, I’d rather live in a cow manure hut in the middle of the woods. 😂
Which place do you guys think would be nice for a foreigner like myself to move to to the US and homestead?
Depens on what you're looking for
I have 5 kids and there all home schooled.....yeah we see that
"maybe you don't like guns" *Laughs ** ahahahahaha
I caught that too 😂
Northern Arizona is a great place to homestead for many reasons 😊
That’s what my husband and I were considering! Arizona or possibly Idaho. We’re still undecided
Great job on a great video.
Bro thanks i need help if you could give me a state that close to ocean and can work too. Love hunting and want to live in a farm
We don't have an instagranm (sp) account. What are we missing???
Where ya at man?
I love your channel. ...but let's be real....most people don't have the option to take over the family farm!
True, it came at a good time for us Bill! But we were out of CT no matter what! Too expensive there
GA
Obviously you don’t care about mandatory annual vehicle safety inspections, one of the main reasons I want to get the hell out VA.
Lots of state s have this. ,🤷🏻♀️🙄
Anything that can revenue off of they'll do.
Awesome! Super informative.
thanks!
California sucks....
I don't care how you get it..
California thinks ALL water is theirs
And will charge you just the same as if you got the water out of their pipes...
Unless you buy it from some one...
California is not the home of the free...
We don’t pay anything for water because we have our own well...but I understand what your saying...we live here!
4 Kids and a Farm good luck and god bless.
@@4KidsandaFarm
You are lucky because i know people that have wells that California started charging them even though they should have been grand fathered in...
These are multi million dollar ranch
So they shut their wells down
And had the city supply their water at the same rate..
Im glad you like California.
That will give the rest of us more room where we settle...
Enjoy your farm, ranch, homestead...👍👍
Outside of California..
@@jimh712 they also come to your home, trespass onto your property and kill all your birds in the worst way possible. Claiming some kind of virulent new castle disease without showing any proof of what strain it is. There is actually a vaccine for some strains as well. It does not effect humans, only other birds but they are trying to protect the factory egg farms instead of the everyday American. I would never live there, in my opinion it is the worse state in the country when it comes to politics and freedom
If home schooling is so important to you, why did you choose Pennsylvania? You scored it 0 in that category
Glad you didn’t pick Virginia, crazy governor there!!!
Not anymore. Yea
@@dextermorgan4093 yes!!!!! I followed that!!!
Michigan
What do you like about Michigan?
My spreadsheet might end up being boring XD I refuse to leave AK
Colorado
Not with our new all-progressive, anti-gun, tax and spend and regulate us to death state government Bloomberg gifted us with in 2018. ON SECOND THOUGHT: Please come here and help us vote these tyrants out!
Too many liberals
overall New England is a pretty shitty place to homestead, sucks for us people who have roots here.
West central GA - 25+ acres with yr round creek & stream, mineral & water rights, build what you want, keep any livestock. I've had horses, Llamas, pigs, goats, all types birds. Mostly wooded, last cut 2010. Low taxes, hospital within 15 minutes but still secluded. 3 bed historical house that needs work but is livable. $329k. Price goes up with improvements.
The one thing i get from this video.....
They like Raw milk ....
I know You Guy's work on eating super healthy have you ever had an issue or a thought about all of the people feeding deer non gmo corn and junk and now we're killing them and eating them just a thought
I have
It's sad to even think about.
Theres no way your homesteading in N.J.
ITS IMPOSSIBLE......
TAXES N CODES land useage no way
How bad does for a Hispanic people means Mexican to live down there
Do not choose Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa. Way too cold winters are awful
This guy should run for some kind of office.
Hello! I’ve been following your family’s journey for the last couple of years and have gleaned a lot of awesome information from your podcast. I’m currently in the market for my first home (buying on my own!) and have plans to start a little one-woman homestead. I’m reaching out because I’m going to PASA next week and was wondering if you guys will be there. If so, I’d loooove to meet up at some point and pick your brain. I’ll be there Thursday and Friday. Let me know if you’ll be around. And if not, maaaaybe you’d be willing to gimme a little tour of your homestead (I live in Western MD). Obviously, I don’t want to be intrusive, so I completely understand if you need to say no. Hope you’re all doing well and I look forward to hearing from you!
#askhomesteady
I’d really like to find a state I can homestead, have raw milk, smoke marijuana, and own my guns. Is being free so much to ask for? Great info and great video but the fact that this video has to exist is sad.
For worth TX.
Lol@ anyone who thinks theres any free land
NJ. has no homeschooling laws PA. is one of the worse states for homeschooling...
That’s seems ironic, considering the large Amish population.
@@yuliyas8648 They are only strict with English ;)
I don’t get home schooling , I think much better for kids to learn with different types of people
You think wrong I’m afraid.
I don’t want to be fingerprinted to buy murder beans. Huh....really makes you think.
No red states.
