I hope her film is not a socialist movie with too much progressive ideas (unlike the other recent ones produced by Hollywood which tackle LGBT issue for instance). A true patriot like me appreciate to see movies that reflect my beautiful American society.
I would love to have a conversation with both directors but Barry Jenkins in particular. He just seems so humble and sweet. There's just a nice warmth about the guy and of course he has done good movies.
Congratulations🎉🎉🎉 Chloé Zhao became the first Chinese American woman to win the Academy Award for best director in the Oscars' 93-year history. Her film “Nomadland” also won awards for best picture and best actress.
I loved that part with Derek. My Uncle Dell was what we called "a Hobo!" He hopped train cars from the western states to visit us back east. He never married, lived out his life taking odd jobs, even carried around a sharpening stone and went door to door sharpening lawnmower blades and such for a little extra money. He was easygoing, kind, funny and I never saw him get angry. We all loved his visits. Derek allowed me to see my Uncle Dell as a young man. So, thank you for that.
loving this series of creatives interviewing creatives. they know what questions to ask, and how to continue with the responses they receive from one another
zoe is winning oscar, hope eternals breaks boundaries in cinema bcz it heavily explores LGBTQ in main storyline! 200m budget for that, oscar you better give her oscar!
Chloe Zhao, You are such an impressive young woman. Exceedingly proud of you. Truly hope u will use your celebrity status to make even more positive changes by telling inspiring real life stories of Chinese people & cultures. There are so many that you must share with the world, Chloe, to correct much misunderstandings about China and her people out there. Congratulations.
I was skeptical but saw it recently and it is great. If youre an existential thinker like me then this film will make lots of sense to you. It’s also a gut wrenching look into aging, lose and purpose. Things that many of us are afraid of or currently experiencing and don’t know what to do.
The women who have been nominated for Academy Award for Best Director ...their movies are all great watch. Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano, Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland...all masterclass films. 11 years later , Kathryn Bigelow is still the only female director who has won an Oscar. This year (2021), for the first time two women have been nominated for Best Director in a single year.
I hope Zhao gets around to making that movie about Bass Reeves one day. I assume that’s what she’s thinking about when she asks Jenkins about casting period films.
I would put it down to going for talented low status directors not only because they are cheaper but because they are also more malleable to the wims of the studio and producers. They are not entrusting the budget to the directors, but the producers who manage the budget and assemble all the elements of the production Blowing up is just a consequence of their name being attached to a billion dollar grossing marvel movie

Read comedy of coffin on kindle written by Avijit Kabiraj. Introduction : Two unemployed boys were employed by a mafia boss, their job is to bury a dead chef in the criminal's cemetery. The chef is the pasta maker whom the boss accidentally shot dead. The boys were chased by the police, shot by a sniper, rested in a church, kidnapped by an evil doctor, electrocuted, freezed, roasted, couple of ladies didn't spare them, survived the strange graveyard but when they returned after burying the dead chef, found the boss in a coffin....
Asian directors are becoming a thing lately but not everyone is Bong Joon Ho. Can't say I liked the movie. Not all nomads are old, out of job, grieving, and have no interest. Many choses the life for the freedom to do things they love to do such as hiking, photography etc. The choice to use real nomads in the movie is also a failure. You clearly see the contrast in acting between the actors and non-actors. Also the choice to go with R rating instead of PG for single full nudity shot that doesn't do much... bad choice again.
I think your choice of wording is really odd. Asian directors aren't "a thing lately" and they're also not a monolith. Just because one Asian person makes a film about "A" doesn't mean every Asian creative that comes along has to be compared to "A". Asian actors, writers, and directors have been around Hollywood for a long time. They just haven't been given the same space as others to shine. Also, I'm all for having an individual opinion on a film, good or bad. However to nitpick about things like an R rating? Someone is fully nude. Urination on a road and defecation in a bucket are shown. Death and suicide are mentioned. What does an R rating have anything to do with the quality of a film? You seem like you have a personal gripe with the film or the director.
Once you tell a story with specificity-rather than treating a group or demographic as a monolith, with the same experiences and histories and feelings-someone will always come at you for the story you’re *not* telling, instead of the one you are.
Your comments are so fraught with ignorance I don't even know where to begin. Asian directors a thing _lately_ ? Have you heard of Ozu, Kurusawa, Wong Kar Wai, Kore-eda, Park Chan-Wook? The film doesn't claim to represent all kinds of nomads. Of course there are all kinds of everything, a film is not a compendium or encyclopedia, it focuses on just one story. As for rating, it's not up to the film producer _at all_ , it's the MPA.
What a lovely discussion between two people who clearly admire and respect each other. Absolutely wonderful.
Love your comments
Barry Jenkins is a better interviewer than most interviewers.
YES!
that's why he's such a good director. He's interested in what people have to say and the stories they carry within them
I love this conversation between two phenomenal directors, especially listening to them talk about process, craft, and context. So inspiring.
Two outstanding directors!!
And to know that Barry & Lulu Wang are a couple...very hopeful of and excited for these new Hollywood power directors!
@@cychia2563 that makes complete sense, tnx

Not just the 1st "Chinese-American" woman, but the 1st woman of color to win Best Director.

Such a beautiful film. Quietly moving. Chloe has a new huge fan. Can’t wait to watch The Rider
This is one of the most generous and collaborative conversations I've seen like this. So cool.
Can't wait for Eternals.. Hoping for the best..
Having been a fan of the comics and having seen Nomadland, I think she can do amazing things with Eternals.

Epic directors and conversation. Thank you for this.

Lovely conversation between two incredibly talented directors!
Maybe Barry Jenkins will get an opportunity to direct a MCU movie or series someday, like Chloe did.

A badass filmmaker directing a film about one of the greatest badasses of all time. OMG, that would be SO amazing! I really hope she does.
Kevin Faigi's abilities to find directors right before they blow up.... Then trusting them with millions of dollars still blows my mind

OMG Barry with hair!
Come on... we need Zhao to make a star wars movie.
this was way too short.
The audio quality is so bad.... sorry the conversation is interesting but it's awful quality for a 30 minute video.
These acclaimed directors are millionaires yet can’t afford a decent zoom setup with great audio.
